Cole
I stare out the window of the train as it chugs south, passively admiring the beauty of this area of my country. I expected it to be flat, but mountains climb high in the distance, all red and umber, their craggy cliffs extending far into the desert that stretches around us. There are hills and craigs – much more to look at than I thought there would be. It is absolutely stunning and I suddenly feel remiss that I haven’t spent much time here before.
But I can barely admire the beauty, distracted as I am by the anxiety that roils in my heart. My wolf howls, pacing in slow circles, knowing that we’re drawing near. And that even if I can’t wait to get there… the next few months are going to be hell.
“Why so glum, Kincaid?” One of my men slumps into the booth seat across from me.
I turn my head and sigh as I take in Greg Jenkins, one of the six corporals who volunteered to come on this mission as a guard under my command. I frown at him, my eyes moving quickly over his tall form, the blonde hair that flops into his face. Greg – he’s a perfectly competent Alpha soldier, but he’s never distinguished himself beyond a penchant for friendly conversation. “Why are you so excited?”
“Because it’s going to be great!” Greg says, laughing and stretching his arms out to the side before tucking them neatly behind his head, looking relaxed. “At least an entire summer of hanging out with a bunch of humanitarian nursing volunteers? Most of whom are going to be girls? Very little duties and all the Academy credit?” He beams. “It’s a dream gig.”
I shake my head at him, a little disappointed. “This is work, Greg. Not play.”
He rolls his eyes at me. “You need to learn to relax a bit, Kincaid. You look like your dad but you don’t have to act like him. You’re not King yet.”
I turn my head to look out the window, thinking Greg’s a little short-sighted there. Even if I’m not King, it’s no excuse to live a life of leisure and excess until my father hands over the crown.
“Seriously,” Greg says, dropping his hands into his lap and leaning towards me. “You’re not excited about the prospect of all these girls? At all?”
“No,” I say, turning my head to glower at him a little bit. Demonstrating at least a little bit of wisdom, Greg leans away from me, giving deference to the more powerful Alpha who is his superior officer. “And if you know what’s good for you, you’ll back off that line of thinking. We’re here to protect these people – not date them. Fraternization will be frowned upon.”
Greg’s face drops for a second as he realizes that I’m completely serious. But then his mouth quirks back into a smile. “Frowned upon…but not forbidden, right?”
I just sigh and turn away, missing Iris a great deal.
“Hey, I think we’re here!” another Corporal calls. I look beyond Greg to see Frank Jones leaning against the foremost window, peering at something ahead. “I see like…a platform, I think.”
The train begins to slow as if in confirmation and I nod, standing up. “All right, everyone gather your stuff,” I call out. “I want this carriage as empty as we found it. Nothing left behind.”
My Corporals all call out their confirmations, packing anything they used during the six-hour journey and slinging packs over their shoulders. Each takes one of the rifles poised by the door too – standard gear for military proceedings like this.
I sigh again, taking the last rifle as my men gather by the door, ready to disembark.
“Like, your eighth sigh in as many minutes, Captain,” Greg murmurs, giving me a worried frown.
I just glance at him and don’t respond, even if he’s right.
Anxiety is at war with excitement in me, my wolf picking up his pace as he continues to wear a track in my soul, unable to settle. Because we’re going to see her – I know we are. I made sure of it, checking the list of volunteer nurses even before dad called for volunteers.
But Nadia? I have a very strong feeling that she has no idea I’m going to be getting off this train.
And…it’s not going to be good.
I grit my teeth, running a hand through my hair, my eyes set on the door as the train pulls to a stop. While I can handle pretty much anyone being angry with me…I don’t know. Something about Nadia just…sets me off.
I never lose my temper with pretty much anyone else. But Nadia Amir? God, she’s got a finger on some hairpin trigger or something.
I exhale slowly, stroking a hand over my wolf’s anxious head. Cool, cool, I murmur to him, to myself. We’re going to be cool. My wolf gives a steady growl in response, determined.
The doors open and my men file out onto the makeshift platform, which was only built just about a week ago for this very campaign.
“Damn,” Frank murmurs, looking around as he adjusts his cap, peering into the dimmed light of an already-setting sun. “There is…not much here, is there?”
“We didn’t promise you a realm of entertainment, soldier,” I snap, glaring at him and then looking towards the road where I hear the rumble of some approaching vehicles. “You’re here to do a job.”
“All right, all right,” Frank says, sending me a little frown. “I wasn’t complaining. Just… observing.”
My five men and I all stand in a neat line, watching as two large vans appear from the south, both white and marked with Midlands Medical College. I turn my head south, watching as two more vehicles approach – military transport this time, all green and brown.
Good. Right on time.
“Let’s go down, men,” I say, nodding to the Corporals. They follow my charge readily, stepping off the platform and standing by as both sets of vans pull up. A driver steps out of the military vehicle and approaches me with a clipboard, confirming that everything is in order.
I look through his commands, confirming everything even as my heart pounds, my ear attuned to the sound of twenty volunteer nursing students climbing out of their vans.
Just as I hand the clipboard back to the driver, nodding to indicate that it’s all correct, I hear a gasp that rings through me. My wolf turns in an eager circle, yipping to the sky even as I close my eyes, dreading this.
“Oh my god,” she groans. “You have got to be kidding me. This is such bullshit.”
ColeI turn, sighing out my nose, meeting Nadia’s eyes as she stands slump-shouldered next to a shorter girl with long, straight red hair and a lovely round face. The new girl looks between us, shocked.I just take a deep breath, clenching my jaw, holding Nadia’s gaze steadily and not saying anything. Just…letting her see with my complete intransigence that I’m not kidding. Not at all.“Wait,” the redhead says, her eyes going wide with surprise and then delight. “Seriously? Is that him!? The Alpha who claimed you!?”Nadia doesn’t respond, just standing straighter now that her initial surprise has passed. She crosses her arms over her chest and glares so hard at me that I wonder if she’s trying to make me explode with the power of her gaze alone.“Wait, what?” Another young woman with wavy light-brown hair steps to Nadia’s other side and stares between me and my mate. “Is that – is that him!?”“It’s him!” The redhead hisses, grinning eagerly at her friend.“Well, what the hell, Nadia!”
Nadia I bounce back and forth between Shayne and Grace, scowling the whole time as we rumble over unpaved roads into the wilderness of the southern desert. It’s so uncomfortable that I barely have time to mull over my continued fury at Cole Kincaid.Unfortunately, my friends aren’t nearly so interested in silent rage.“Nadia,” Shayne whispers, tucking her long red hair back behind her ear and glancing over at the Alpha seated at the end of our row. It’s not Cole, but it may as well be – they’re all built the same. Gigantic, muscled, brutal, stone-faced.Okay, fine. Cole is taller and…better looking than the others. But my point stands – all Alphas are cast from the same crappy mold.“Nadi!” Shayne bites out, using my oldest nickname. I snap my head to her with a frown, realizing I missed whatever she just said. Shay looks at me like I’m a little nuts and then glances towards the back of the transport where Cole is seated. Grace leans in, wanting to be in on this. “Seriously, why didn’
NadiaI sigh, looking down and shaking my head, a little ashamed that I put my personal complaints over the mission. Dad is right, as usual – I need to concentrate on the big picture.I feel dad’s hand warm on my shoulder and look back into his face. “I didn’t know until this morning,” he says softly. “Don’t let his presence throw you off, okay? You’re here for a job, so is he. It doesn’t need to be anything beyond that. Your focus should be on the people you’re helping.”I nod deeply, willing myself to the job even as I know that it’s going to be…difficult. I have trouble, sometimes, letting my temper and my passions distract me from my work. But dad has always had my back, and I know he’ll have it again if I need it. When Cole brought me back from the train station dad was frantic with worry – he hadn’t known where I’d run to. But as soon as I’d cried and told him I didn’t want to be there anymore he’d made our excuses to the king and got me the hell out of there.Dad has my back, a
Nadia“A lot of people are going to be coming out of that place,” dad says, his voice dropping, more emotion coming into it now. “Humans, wolves, soldiers, civilians. Women, kids. All kinds. Some will be wounded, some will be fleeing the only home they’ve ever known. It is our job not only to receive these people but to give them whatever it is they need – medical care especially, but also pointing them toward therapists and social workers to ensure that they’re taken care of emotionally and setting up for their future. Those much smaller teams will arrive later tonight and tomorrow. But it’s important to know that you will be on the front line of care.”The responsibility settles on my shoulders and I straighten them a little, instantly accepting it. Because honestly, this is why I decided to take a nursing degree in the first place. There are so many people who are hurt and damaged by the communities who are supposed to care for them.I should know, after all. My mother was raised i
Nadia“I’m not going out there, Shay,” I say, narrowing my eyes and crossing my arms over my chest.“Oh, yes you are,” she murmurs, waving a hand at me, dismissive.“There won’t even be anyone to hang out with! They’ll be guarding us!”“Only two at night,” Shayne says, pointing at my packet with a wide grin. “Which leaves four for…free time. Me time. It’s Shay o’clock, baby! We’re going to go find some boys!”She whoops, excited, but I just glare at her, tightening my arms, refusing to go.“Fine,” Shayne says, shrugging and unscrewing the tequila’s cap, taking a long swig that makes her shudder, grimace, and then laugh. My mouth drops open at her gall. “I’ll go alone then – to hang out with a bunch of ravenous wolves who haven’t seen a girl in months –““Oh, for heaven’s sake, Shayne,” I snarl, standing up and snatching the bottle out of her hand. “You’re ridiculous.”“Yes,” she says, beaming at me, accepting the frankly accurate description with ease. “Come be ridiculous with me! Beca
“Come on,” she says, nodding to the fire as we arrive at the edge of the guards’ camp. “Just…talk to them. See what they’re actually all about. If they suck, we’ll go.”“You forget,” I snap, glaring a little. “I grew up with these wolves. I know exactly who they are.”I turn away from her, storming into the little circle of firelight and taking a seat at the far side, pointedly as far away from the four wolves and their band of new friends as I can get. Cole Kincaid turns towards me as I sit, his brows raised in surprise. But I just stare into the fire, scowling and ignoring him.Or at least, pretending to.Grace sits down next to me and secretly I’m grateful that she didn’t abandon me. “Sorry,” I murmur, meaning it but not happy to admit it.“We’re good, Nadi,” she says, smiling and giving me a nudge. “Look, Shayne’s having a good time.”I raise my eyes to the group again, immediately seeing Shayne laughing, seated on a log next to a very tall, broad-shouldered blonde guard, sharing
ColeI beam up into Rose’s beautiful face, passively grateful that I thought to drop my knife and the stick I was whittling just in time to catch her. My eyelids threaten to flutter shut as I again smell her amazing scent – like snowfall – crisp and clean, with a touch of mint on the nose.God, fuck but that scent takes me back.“What are you doing so far from your palace, big scary wolf?” Rose asks, grinning down at me with her icy blue eyes crinkled with joy. “Have you gone wild and returned to your primordial self?”I shake my head at her, my smile deepening at her slight accent – the way she rolls her r’s, slurs her s’s and her c’s.“I came hunting after you, Rosie,” I murmur, playful, squeezing her tighter, making her laugh that lovely lilting laugh. “But the question is, what are you doing out here?”I bend, meaning to put her on her feet, but Rose gives a soft, petulant whine of dismay, holding me closer. I laugh and straighten, shaking my head at her, well aware that pretty mu
ColeNadia stays tense and still for a long moment before she slowly stands, pressing her hands to her thighs and rising like a damned goddess from the mist. My heart starts to pound, my wolf making all kinds of unintelligible howls and yips as I watch every movement of every muscle, taking it all in.She tilts her chin up, proud, and holds my gaze. “No, Cole,” she whispers, dangerous. “I’m not jealous.”I smirk, unable to help it. “I mean, you look a little jealous.”She bares her teeth at me, just a flash – such a wolfish gesture, even for a human. “You think I’d be jealous,” she hisses, “of some slutty little witch who comes running in here like she owns the place –“I laugh lightly, delighted.“I mean I’d have more decency than that,” Nadia snaps, throwing out a hand to the center of the camp where Rose and the rest of her group have disappeared. “What a prideless –““Oh, come on,” I say, shrugging, casual. “Rose just has a very particular verve for life. She’s fun.”“She’s certai
NadiaI shake my head at Cole in apology, but he just turns back to the screen at the sound of his father’s voice.“Yes,” Ethan says, nodding seriously to all of us. “We’ll expect to send a great number of refugees as well as Children of Solace members – combative and not – toward you. General Amir, if we can get you some expected numbers, can you start to think of ways to sort this out? I’m aware that you have one medical tent right now and it…might not be best practice to mix populations, though we’ll want everyone who needs aid seen.”“Right,” my dad murmurs, nodding quickly to the King before starting to take some notes. “Yes, get me some numbers. I’ll see what I can do.”I exhale slowly, glancing at Cole, who focuses on the screen, his face quite grave. And as much as it surprises me to ever be in line emoti
NadiaMy dad looks up from his desk where he’s setting up the video call, his eyes moving quickly between Cole and me. “Nadia,” he murmurs, dropping his gaze to the keyboard, clearly hiding a smirk. “Good morning. To you as well, Cole.”“Good morning, sir,” Cole says, taking me by the elbow and giving me a little tug so that I follow him. As we move to stand behind my father, another man comes in – one I’ve seen frequently around camp, especially as he organizes the delivery of more and more patients. He stops at the entrance, narrowing his eyes at me with a frown.“Captain Stanzor,” Cole says, nodding to the chair in front of him, which is empty and clearly reserved for this relative stranger. “Good morning. It’s nice to see you again.”Stanzor slowly crosses as dad presses the button to connect the video call. The Captain tak
NadiaI scoff and roll my eyes. “Will you just tell me?”He laughs, looking down at the fire. “Listen, Nadia. I heard everything you said to me last night. Or at least, I tried to. And I’m very sorry. I’m going to try to be better.”My mouth falls open.He raises his gaze to my face.I snap my mouth shut, determined to let him eat his fill of crow.“I wasn’t fair to you and I wasn’t kind. I’m sorry that I didn’t trust you. I should have. I’ve arranged for –““I’m sorry too.” I bite my lip, looking down, pissed off at myself for giving in so quick. I mean, three seconds ago I was ready to indulge in a pleasant morning of sipping coffee and listening to the Prince grovel.Stupid conscience.Cole pauses.“I am,” I say, nodding solidly, not looking at him, my stupid
Nadia“Nadia.”A creaking little squeak rises in my throat as I turn my head toward the noise, a determined frown curving my lips.Something pats my mattress.“Seriously, Nadia.”My eyes fly open to take in the horrible sight of Cole Kincaid’s perfect fucking face eight inches from mine.I bolt up, starting to shriek, but - quick as a panther - he slips a hand over my mouth and muffles the sound.“Can you not!?” He hisses, glancing rapidly around at all of the other sleeping forms. “Everyone is asleep!”I start to say that I was likewise asleep and pleased to be so – but the words are all stifled against his palm, so I just seethe, already glaring – which is not an activity I enjoy before dawn when I haven’t had any coffee –“I come in peace, all right?” Co
Cole Slowly, General Amir smirks at me. “What?”I frown, shifting uncomfortably in my chair. “Other…young men?”He laughs, low, I think mildly entertained. “That’s a question for Nadia, Cole. Not me. But yes, you’re not without competition. And certainly there are some against whom she has less prejudice.”I groan, leaning back in my chair, covering my face with my hands and tilting my head back, trying to collect myself as my wolf races off into the darkness of my soul in a complete panic. Why? Why didn’t I ever even bother to ask if Nadia was seeing anyone!?But surely – surely Shayne would have told me –“Cole.”With an effort I collect myself, lifting my head back up and slipping my hands down so I can meet General Amir’s gaze.“She’s really putting you through your paces, isn’t she?”I sigh, nodding, dropping my hands into my lap. “She’s just…holding me to such a high standard, General Amir.”He raises his eyebrow at me as my wolf comes skulking back, no less panicked but wanti
ColeI look at General Amir evenly, holding his gaze. “I want Nadia to have full access to all the information I have. I want her in on meetings, debriefings, planning, all of it. She’ll have a vote in the proceedings of this operation – even just a minor one. I’m going to tell this to my father and I want you to support me on it.”General Amir raises an eyebrow. “Well, that’s a terrible idea.”I gape at him.“What?” he asks, smirking at me and lacing his fingers together as he leans further back in his chair. “My girl throws a temper tantrum and you reward her with unprecedented access?”I scoff. “I am not giving her rewards – and I’m not responding to her tempter tantrum like I’m her indulgent father or some-““Damn right you’re not.”General Amir’s tone surprises me. I sit taller in my rickety chair. “You’re being impulsive, Cole,” General Amir says, his voice low, words swift. “You’re eager to please her, which I understand, but she is a student nurse. She is clever as anything a
I take deep breaths, willing my mind to clear, my blood to stop rushing in my ears, but I still flinch when I feel Shayne’s hands on my shoulders, and then her arm wrapping around me as she trots to keep up.We walk together a few feet in silence, leaving the Prince behind.“Wow, you really let him have it,” she whispers, glancing back.I keep my eyes forward. “Was I too hard?”“Maybe a little bit, Na-na,” she whispers, giving me a squeeze. “But…I get it. It’s a subject that’s close to you. You care.”My head hangs lower, my guilt at war with…with everything in me that I hold dear. The ethics I inherited from my father, the big raw heart from my mother, the desperate desire to do anything I can to help. All mixed up in a big angry lump named Nadia.Tears come to my eyes again. Terribly confused, I slump against Shayne, who gives me a squeeze.&ldq
Nadia“I asked you,” I snap, not even bothering to try to keep my tone even anymore. “I asked you point blank if Rose was lying about the humans in the basement and you turned away –““Nadia,” Cole sighs, lifting his hands and wrapping them around my arms – not hard, but certainly firm.“Get off of me!” I shake myself and step back, wanting my freedom. He sighs and does as I demand, his jaw working in frustration. “I wasn’t trying to keep it from you – I just didn’t want you to get upset in front of –““Why not!” My voice carries now as I begin to lose myself. “Didn’t want me to get upset!? It’s fucking upsetting! I have a right to know –““You seriously can’t understand why I wouldn’t want you to b
Silence reigns for a second, then footsteps crunch on dirt. “Why don’t we get her in the car?” Tommy murmurs to Shay. “She can sit in the middle – have one of us as a buffer on either side.”Shayne nods and loosens her arms. Together they guide me toward the car, helping me into the back seat. I work very hard to pull myself together as Shayne hops in on the other side and makes quick work of my buckle.I glance up once, seeing Cole’s eyes in the rearview mirror, watching me, his expression tense and devastated.I look away, not wanting to face him right now. Half because I don’t want him to see me cry – half because I’m…furious. The jeep rumbles again through the woods, though the wind on my face is far less pleasant this time – every gust of it a slap on my cheeks. I lean against Shayne as I stew, trying to sort through my complicated feelings, figure out why I’m so damn
