THE NEXT MORNING IN JAMES’S HOTEL ROOM
I was startled awake by the the nonstop ring from my cellphone. I clutched my head, feeling as if it were splitting from the intense pain, I was shocked when I turned to my side and saw a man next to me. I immediately glanced at my body, which was hidden beneath the comforter, and sighed in relief when I saw that I was still clothed. “Ohhhh Kate, what kind of stupidity did you get into last night?!” I whispered to myself as I lightly hit my head. To be honest, I couldn’t remember anything from last night. I had no idea how I ended up in this man’s room. The last thing I remembered was being alone at the Beach Front Bar, drowning myself in alcohol. I moved slowly and got out of bed. I didn’t want to make any noise so I wouldn’t wake the man beside me. I didn’t want him to see me, especially since I didn’t even know who he was. I glanced at him again, seeing him deep in sleep. One by one, I picked up my sandals and small bag and quietly left the VIP SUITE room. I looked around to make sure no one saw me, adjusted my appearance, and walked away without looking back down the hallway. I called my younger brother back to ask why he had been calling me nonstop. Though I was irritated, I couldn’t ignore him or my parents, especially after what George told me. THE DAY OF CHAOS IN OIR HOUSE GEORGE: We all stared at each other. Me, Mom, and Dad when I opened the door to the person who had rung the doorbell. Mom and Dad, who were having coffee that morning on our veranda, stood up in shock. None of us expected that Kate would arrive today. She had mentioned several times that she would be coming to the Philippines for a vacation, but she never told us the exact date or time. We were all surprised when she suddenly showed up. “Surprise!” Kate shouted when I opened the gate for her. “You’ve gotten so big, little brother! It’s only been two years, and you’re already taller than me!” (Ate Kate handed me her suitcase and ran toward Mom and Dad.) “Mom! Dad!” (She hugged them, but she seemed to notice the signals that Dad and I were exchanging. Dad was motioning for me to go up to Charlotte’s room to tell her about Kate’s presence.) “Why don’t you guys seem excited to see me? Why do you look like you’ve seen a ghost?!” Kate said, half-jokingly. “Ahhhh Kate, why didn’t you tell us you were arriving today? We could have picked you up at the airport!” Mom stammered. “Of course, it’s a surprise, Mom. What kind of surprise is it if you tell people beforehand?” (She entered the house.) “Hmmmmm, I missed our house.” (She added.) “By the way, Dad, where’s Charlotte? Don’t tell me she’s still asleep? What time is it?! Wait, I’ll go wake her up!” Kate said, heading directly to Charlotte’s room. “Wait, Kate!” Mom shouted. She was about to stop her, but Kate had already gone upstairs, as if she couldn’t hear anything anymore, and entered Charlotte’s room. We all followed Kate upstairs, but it was too late. She found Charlotte still lying in bed with Michael, cuddled together. Chaos erupted in our house. As much as I was angry, I couldn’t do anything because Dad would always scold me whenever I suggested telling Kate about what was happening with Charlotte. Their reason was always that we shouldn’t inform her because she might stop sending us money and might refuse to help process Michael’s documents so he could work on a ship. There was a heated argument between Kate and Mom. I couldn’t blame Kate for being so upset with us, and honestly, I also disagreed with how Dad kept enabling Charlotte. We couldn’t stop Kate from leaving the house; she left behind her big suitcase, bringing only her carry-on and a small bag as she got into a taxi. I couldn’t catch up to her because the taxi sped off as soon as she left. “That Kate is insolent! Now she learned to talk back. Arthur, you shouldn’t let her treat us like this. She thinks she’s somebody just because she got a good job!” Mom angrily said to Dad. Dad pointed at Michael. “You, you better fix this! You need to marry Charlotte right away before you board the ship so you don’t get insulted by Kate anymore!” Dad angrily shouted at Michael. “Dad, why does it seem like its Kate’s fault? She’s the one who was wronged by this jerk!” I said, pointing at Michael with frustration. “You, George, you’re just as hard-headed. You always like to interfere. Don’t add to Charlotte’s distress. You know she’s pregnant, and stress might harm the baby.” Dad scolded me angrily. Meanwhile, Charlotte was crying, and Mom was comforting her. “Don’t worry, Uncle. I’ll do everything I can to marry Charlotte as soon as possible. I already have all the documents and training done, so I’ll make sure to add Charlotte to my Alote. All that’s left is to wait for my boarding schedule, as I’ve already passed the interview,” Michael, that jerk, said. I stormed into my room and slammed the door shut behind me, locking it with force.George: The next day, Mom was still furious with Kate. She kept shouting throughout the house because Kate wasn’t answering her messages or calls. “Damn that Kate! She still won’t answer my calls. She hasn’t sent any allowance for us this month, and now she suddenly comes home. How are we supposed to pay the bills? Talk to your daughter, Arthur,” Mom. “Call her, George. Maybe she’ll answer your call! We have so many bills to pay, and she didn’t even leave a little money,” Dad said. “Yeah, but you told Kate you didn’t need her money, even though she’s the one being cheated on,” I whispered to them. “What are you saying, George?” Mom asked me. “I said, what am I supposed to say if Kate answers?!” I replied. “Make up an excuse; tell her about Charlotte’s tuition. That’s another thing—it can’t be delayed just because we’re in this situation. Hayyyy, damn it,” Mom said angrily.
The next morning, my phone rang unexpectedly—it was Kate on the other end, speaking in a low voice. I could barely hear her, but I immediately told her what had happened to Mom. “Kaye, Mom was rushed to the hospital,” I said. “What happened to her?” she asked, sounding worried. “She’s been really upset with you since yesterday. She said she’s been calling, but you weren’t answering,” I replied, feeling anxious. I could hear Kate sigh. “Then earlier, she had a heart attack. She turned pale and eventually fainted. I’m about to head to the hospital now to meet Papa there,” I added. “Please come home, Kaye. I’m sorry, but Mom and Dad don’t have any money for the hospital bills, and Mom was still worrying about the electric bill earlier. She said it might get disconnected.” “What? But I sent them money recently! Why would we get disconnected?” she asked, sounding frustrated. “I don’t know, Kate. Mom said you didn’t send the allowance this month. Kate, please come home,” I begged her.
CHARLOTTE POVHere’s a corrected version of your passage:I sat in a chair outside on our balcony, smiling as my sister, Kate, finally left our house. I love my sister, but it just so happens that we fell in love with the same person. Mom also stormed off to her room, furious with Kate. I had a feeling today would be the day she arrived for her vacation in the Philippines, based on our last video call when I told her about my final tuition payment. Finals are approaching, and in a few months, I’ll be graduating. As agreed with Mom and Dad, I didn’t mention my pregnancy to Ate because she might stop sending us financial support, especially if she finds out who the father of my child is.I’m almost three months pregnant now. I didn’t steal Michael from Kate. I met Michael before they suddenly became a couple. He was a bandmate at the place where we used to perform. I had liked Michael for a while, but my sister was quicker to make him her boyfriend. Michael used to court me, but I wasn’
Days passed and Michael and Ate were constantly fighting because of the man that Ate Kate was always with in her picture. That's why Michael always invited me to drink until one day we brought up his past flirting with me. "You know, Charlotte, you should be the only one. Why didn't you like me then?" it asked me. We are drinking more and more of those moments. "Michael, stop there! You're already engaged to my brother, even if I say I love you, it's no use." I narrowed my answer to him. He looked at me. He stopped sipping his drink. Because of our constant companionship, I felt that Michael had fallen in love with me again, the intensity of his desire for me could be seen in the stickiness of his gaze. It's been a month since Ate Kate didn't talk to her anymore because of her jealousy that has no basis at all, I'm always the one she runs to whenever she's upset with my brother. He slightly brought his face closer to mine. "Maybe there's nothing wrong if we continue our past
JAMES POV I drank too much wine last night. I knew I had reached my drinking limit again because I felt a headache. Even so, I still remember everything that happened and what I did last night. I fell backwards when I felt Kate was gone by my side. "Hey Kate, you're really different from everyone else." I said, I can only shake my head when I remember the happy conversation Kate and I had last night as well as how I almost owned her. I'm known to be a womanizer and I admit it, I don't pass anyone up as long as they show me a motive. They say that when rice comes near the chicken, won't you eat it?. But I felt strange about Kate last night. I respected her when I knew she was still a virgin. I didn't expect that until now she had no experience of having sex because any man who saw how wild Kate was on the dance floor all night would be able to say that she is no different from girls who just get taken for granted. Even more, he told me that he already has a fiance that he has be
KATE POV After three days of Mama’s stay in the hospital, her doctor finally allowed her to go home. During her confinement, I didn’t see Charlotte or the others visit her; perhaps they were avoiding me whenever I arrived. It was possible that Mama had told them to stay away to avoid any potential conflict. As I told Mama and Papa, I had decided not to return to our house and instead rented an apartment some distance away. Only my younger sibling has visited my apartment. I also planned to buy my own condo while I was still in the Philippines because I had no intention of going back to the house where Charlotte and Michael lived. My younger sibling would stay in my condo when I return to Dubai; if they didn’t want to, I’d just rent it out to students since it’s near several universities in Manila. I instructed George not to tell Mama about my property purchase, as I was sure they would demand a share of the rental income once they found out. They never seemed to run out of thing
“Okay, dear, please don’t hold it against us if we kept this from you. And about what you hear from our neighbors, just ignore them. You know we have no one else to rely on but you. I hope your sending us allowance when you return to Dubai won’t be affected by what happened.” (Papa said to me gently.) “You know, right?! Charlotte won’t be able to work right after she graduates because she’s going to give birth. Michael is also about to board a ship, and before he leaves, your Mama and I are asking you to cover our expenses and also for your sister’s check-up since you’re the one who has the means right now. They will pay you back once they’re financially stable!” Papa said calmly. I didn’t respond. I didn’t want to speak because I was afraid of what might come out of my mouth. I thought to myself, they’ve already treated me like a fool, and now I’m supposed to take on their obligations. I was really at a loss for words. No matter how much I wanted to explode, it wouldn’t change an
AFTER TWO HOURS Loud knocks on the door of my apartment echoed continuously. In the silence of that place, I could hear the teasing of my childhood friends resonating throughout the hallway of that ten-room apartment. “Those brats! Hahaha,” I said. “Kate, OPEN THE DOOR!” Alvin said dramatically like Nora Aunor. I laughed as I opened the door because Alvin was already in drama mode, leaning back against the wall and sliding down to sit. “Hahaha, just kidding!” he said to me. “Ahhhhhh!!! (Nikka shouted loudly) Kate, wow, you’re really doing well, our friend is so beautiful! You’re the only one blooming among us. That’s why you’re the talk of the Maharlika Compound,” she said without a care. She was still laughing at her own joke. “Okay, bye! (I teased, pretending to close the door again) Hahaha, just kidding! Girl, I missed you! Come in before I get kicked out for your noise,” I said. Nikka is one of my childhood friends from our neighborhood. She’s really sharp-tongued
THE NEXT DAY AFTER MY DINNER DATE WITH JAY KATE’S POV The first thing I did this morning was call James to talk about what Mr. Ismail mentioned to me. I was confused by his sudden decision, especially why he paid for two years’ worth of the Villa we were staying in if he was planning to move me to Europe. Was James just wasting money? But then I remembered, this was nothing to James Santiago. With all the income he makes from the showroom and his other businesses, it’s not surprising that he’d let go of the fully paid villa so easily. “Yes Kate, you miss me? That fast, really?” he teased me. “James, what is this I’m hearing from Mr. Ismail about me transferring branches again?” I asked him irritably. “Relax, Kate! I’m just doing you a favor. It’s not a joke to be offered a COO position. And it’s in Europe, Kate. It’s a great opportunity for you,” he answered arrogantly. “James, I didn’t ask for this
KATE’S POV HR DEPARTMENT KATE AND MR. ISMAIL’S CONVERSATION I received an email from Mr. Ismail asking me to come to the Head Office for a proposal. I didn’t ask what it was about just yet. When I arrived at the Head Office, Mr. Ismail was already waiting for me at the front desk. Ever since he found out about James and me, his attitude toward me had changed. He became more approachable, and every request I made was granted right away. After all, how could he refuse when the wife of the owner made a request? This was one of the privileges I enjoyed in the setup James and I had. Despite everything, there were benefits to my agreement with James. I agreed to pretend to be his wife for two years in exchange for 10 million and the freedom to be free from the legalities of our marriage. I accepted because I felt I had no other choice. James constantly threatened that he wouldn’t sign our annulment and would strip me of everythin
KATE AND JAY’S CONVERSATION A few days after returning to Kuwait, Jay visited me at the showroom. I was surprised when he arrived holding a bouquet of roses. My Filipino staff couldn’t help but smile widely—after all, they knew Jay well since he frequently visited me at work. He also loved bringing small gifts from his base to win over my staff, especially when he was looking for me. Despite feeling a pang of regret knowing that this charade of mine would only last for two more years, I couldn’t help but smile. I knew that when this ended, I’d also have to distance myself from James’ parents, who had treated me with such care and value as both a child and a person. Still, I couldn’t ignore the fact that Jay had been consistent in his efforts to win me over—from my time in Dubai to now in Kuwait. “Hi, brat! Welcome back!” Jay greeted me. “Thank you, Jay. You didn’t have to do that!” I replied shyly.
AFTER ONE MONTH BACK TO KUWAIT Mommy Samantha and Daddy Eddie hugged me tightly. My one-month vacation in the Philippines flew by so fast. Even though I didn’t get to see my real family, I felt like my days in the Philippines weren’t enough because I truly enjoyed bonding with James’ parents. It wasn’t because I wanted to be with James, but because I experienced what it felt like to be cared for by parents—something I never felt with Mama and Papa. I knew I would miss their care and affection when I returned to Kuwait. At first, I had doubts about going to the Philippines with James, fearing his parents wouldn’t like me or that they might be snobbish because of their wealth, while I was just an ordinary employee working for their son’s business in Kuwait. But I was completely wrong. Everything I had worried about was the exact opposite of what happened. To make things easier, James and I told his parents everything about me—exce
AFTER TWO WEEKS BACK IN THE PHILIPPINES Time flies so quickly. It feels like just yesterday we arrived in the Philippines, but now two weeks have already passed. I’ve grown fond of James’s parents, especially his mom. She visits us almost every day, always bringing home-cooked meals for me. They constantly joke about wanting us to hurry up and give them a grandchild, which makes me smile every time the topic comes up. Sometimes I wonder if James is adopted because his personality is so far from theirs. His parents treat me like their own daughter, doing things for me that my own parents never did. Every time I talk to my mom, the only thing she ever mentions is my remittances. When I think about the two-year contract James and I have, I can’t help but feel sad. When our arrangement ends, so will the warmth and kindness his parents show me. For the first time, I’ve felt what it’s like to have parents who genuinely care ab
KATE’S POV I jolted awake when I saw James lying beside me on my bed, sleeping soundly while we were wrapped in each other’s arms. He stirred slightly as I pulled away, breaking the embrace. Memories of last night came rushing back—how we ended up sleeping next to each other, the foolish things I did, and the anger I felt before I left the house, especially after hearing from Nikka what my parents had done behind my back. If I hadn’t come home, I wouldn’t have known that I no longer had my condo because they meddled with it again. Nikka even told me how furious my parents were with me for keeping the condo a secret. I stared at James’s peaceful face as he slept. I remembered how he took care of me last night and how he didn’t take advantage of me while I was drunk. I was grateful to discover that, deep down, he had a kind heart. A small smile crept onto my face as I watched him, but then he suddenly wrapped his arms around me again, pulling me back down
JAMES’ POV I turned away from Kate and started walking out of her room. Once again, she teased me. She flaunted herself in front of me, and I didn’t understand why I didn’t take the bait. Kate is incredibly sexy and beautiful. She has a well-proportioned figure—ample breasts, a flat stomach, and wide hips. Her face is angelic and naive-looking. If she were any other woman, I probably would’ve given in by now. “Isn’t this what you want? You’re just like every other man! You’re horrible!” she snapped at me. “Kate, enough!” I said calmly. “Get some rest; you’re really drunk!” I had no choice but to return to her room and hand her a loose shirt I found in her closet. Thankfully, she didn’t argue and put it on right away. She even laughed and teased me while taking off her bra and waving it in front of me. I turned away until she was fully dressed. I helped her lie down on her bed, and she collapsed onto it carele
JAMES SANTIAGO As Kate closed the door, I stood up from my seat. I tidied myself up and quietly followed her to see where she was going. She hadn’t gotten into a taxi yet, so I got into my car and kept an eye on who she was leaving with and where she was heading. I didn’t see anyone leaving with her. Once Kate got into the taxi and it drove off, I followed it to see where it was going. It stopped at a disco club. As she entered, I immediately parked my car. I called Chandler, our childhood friend who also lived near this area. He came right away; I didn’t have to say much. He was reliable when it came to places like this. He wasn’t always with us during our outings because he was going back and forth to France, where he had established his business. I quickly went inside and took a VIP lounge where I could see where Kate was sitting. I also planned to wait for Chandler there so Kate wouldn’t see me.
KATE’S POV I was staring at James while he casually walked into his unit. I was waiting for him to at least apologize for what he said, but it seemed like he didn’t care about me at all. He just went to the kitchen and grabbed a beer he had chilled in the fridge earlier. I exhaled in frustration. He sat down on his sofa and glanced at me. “WHAT?! What’s with that look, Kate? Did I do anything to you?” he asked. “Remember, Kate, I’m your husband. Don’t think about backing out just because you signed our contract; you have no choice but to follow the two years in our contract, or you’ll lose everything!” he said with a smirk. I raised an eyebrow at him, and tears started to fall as I began to respond to his arrogance. “Who do you think you are?! I didn’t agree to this because of your money; I’m doing this for my family! I don’t want everything I’ve worked for to go to waste just because of a one-night mistake!” I replied. I cou
