Ashley smiled as she noticed how the silk navy-blue dress hugged her hips like a second skin. Her long blonde hair complimented her light makeup and toned skin.
Washington had done nothing less of being a blessing in her life in the five years she had settled in. She hadn’t felt that uneasy for a long time as she looked forward to whatever Danton had prepared for her.
She never understood why the man despite being a senior doctor never summed up the courage to ask her out.
The door to her bedroom door banged open, pulling her out of her thoughts.
“Mommy, Mommy, Bry is… wooow…” Brenda started only to stop as she looked at her mother.
“Bry, Rand, come see how beautiful mommy looks!” she shrieked, clapping her hands together as small quick footsteps were heard approaching the room. Ashley smiled as she watched her children swarm into the room looking at her in admiration.
“You look beautiful Mommy,” Brandon complimented, making Ashley smile as she muttered a thank you to him.
“Mom, I’m going out with you today,” Bryson, the eldest of them, said , pushing his chest forward with a serious face.
Ashley chuckled as she approached him, “and why is that my warrior?”
“You need someone to protect you, and I’m the strongest here, don’t worry mom, you’re safe with me,” Bryson said, showing off his barely visible biceps, making Ashley laugh out loudly.
“No, I think Rand should go, Bryson is a bully!” Brenda suggested putting her arm around her brother Brandon, the youngest of the triplets.
“Brenda, I’ll deal with you after I…”
“Bryson! Apologize to your sister, why are you bullying her?” Ashley stepped in as she noticed how big her children had grown.
Brandon was the quiet one, always observing mostly and talking less. The same couldn’t be said for Bryson and Brenda, who were always on each other’s neck.
“But mom, she started…”
“Now, Bryson,” Ashley insisted, looking at her eldest son in a reprimanding way.
“I’m sorry Bre,” Bryson apologized, his head lowered.
“And you, Brenda, apologize to your brother,” Ashley said, turning to her daughter.
“I’m sorry Bry, I shouldn’t have said mean things about you,” Brenda, always the peacemaker after their fights, said.
The doorbell rang, making the kids bolt downstairs knowing all too well who they were expecting. “Uncle Dan!” They all bickered in unison as they ran towards the door.
“Hello there, how are my princes?” Danton asked, hugging them each at a time until he reached Brenda who had her hands folded against her chest.
“Ooh, I must have forgotten to mention my charming princess, has anyone seen my princess?” Danton asked playfully, pretending to search around.
“I’m standing right here, uncle Dan, can't you see me?” Brenda answered, smiling at him.
Danton turned, pretending to be surprised, “Ooh there you are, I missed you.” He hugged her, swirling her around in the air, making her laugh out loud.
“Guess what, I brought everything you asked for, a jet for Pilot Bryson, an ambulance truck for Dr. Brandon and finally a well-dressed model doll for my princess,” Danton said, fishing out the presents from his package.
The kids cheered, each taking their gifts in joy.
“You spoil them too much Dan,” Ashley's voice came from the stairs, making Danton look up at her. His breath hitched as he looked at her with his eyes wide in awe.
“You look…breathtaking Ash,” he complimented, offering her his hand.
“Oh stop, you flatter me,” Ashley responded shyly, smiling at him.
“Well, it's true, you always look gorgeous,” Danton said, getting lost in her brown eyes. Since the first he saw her, he knew she was something special and that he would give up anything for her.
“Stop it Dan, I wonder what you have planned for me today, I hope it's not another shabby movie night,” Ashley said, chuckling , reminding him of when he took her out for the first time.
Danton laughed, shaking his head, “no it's not, you’ll love what I have planned for you.”
At the airport, the chilly air emphasized the coming festive season. The small boy standing next to his father stomped his feet lightly on the floor.
“Dad, this place is very cold,” he commented, rubbing his gloved hands together.
“Yes, it is, welcome to Washington, let's get in the car okay,” Jordan answered, smiling at his son's comment as he helped Maya in the car.
“Do you think mommy will be fully okay this time?” The boy asked, looking at his father in worry.
“Shane, look at me, Mommy will be okay this time, the hospital has the best doctors, okay,” Jordan reassured, looking at his son keenly.
“Promise, daddy?” Shane asked, looking at him with watery eyes. Having to watch his mom in and out of hospital typically had him worrying at his age.
“I promise, now get in the car.”
“Can you take me to the restroom daddy?” Shane asked, holding his legs together.
“Stop disturbing your father and hold it in!” Maya shrieked at her son, making him jump slightly at her angry tone.
“Sure, it's okay son, Maya we’ll be back,” Jordan said looking at the scared kid before him. Maya lost it occasionally, but Jordan didn’t think she was doing the same to their son.
He mentally noted he needed to talk to her about it. Meanwhile, Ashley furrowed her brows as she noticed the familiar environs of the airport.
“Ooh smooth now we’re having a date in the airport,” Ashley said looking at Danton in disbelief.
“And who said anything about a date? Oh, is someone finally giving in to me?” Danton chuckled, narrowing his eyes at her mockingly.
He had always respected her and watching all Ashley had gone through, he didn’t want to pressure her. Making her comfortable around him that she was free to tell him anything was a good starting point for him.
“Dan! Just drive to wherever, it’s not like I want to date my workmate and my best friend’s brother,” Ashley said trying to hide her flushed face.
“Mmmh really, if it's any better you’re like my younger sister, now shut up we’re here,” Danton said pulling over in the parking lot.
“Danton, I didn’t plan on using my off day watching people at the airport, I think…”
“Ash!” her name was called out, making her turn in surprise. Her eyes settled on Lindsey who waved at her continuously with a broad smile plastered across her face.
And that’s when Ashley flipped running towards her like a child excited to see their mother. They hugged laughing out loud ignoring the attention they were drawing towards them.
“I didn’t know you were coming,” Ashley said, hugging her again.
“It was meant to be a surprise, it seems my big bro made that possible,” Lindsey said, hugging her brother.
“Don’t praise me, I almost told her she’s stubborn as always,” Danton said laughing out loud. In midst of joy, Ashley thought she caught sight of Maya making her smile fade slightly. The thought alone made her stomach churn and turn.
“Guys wait for me, I need to use the restroom,” Ashley said, excusing herself walking away from them.
Quick to her business, Ashley made her way out of the restroom only to stumble on a small boy who appeared confused and lost.
“Hey there champ, are you here alone? Where is your mom?” Ashley inquired, noticing the boy was about her kids’ age.
“I’m… with my dad,” the boy answered shyly.
“What’s your name, I’m Ashley,” Ashley said trying to create rapport.
The boy looked at her as if determining whether she was safe to be around.
“Shane…” he answered, looking up at her.
“It's a pleasure to meet you Shane, now may I help you look for your dad?” Ashley asked, receiving a nod from him as he smiled slightly.
“Okay, you know I have two boys your age and a little girl,” Ashley said smiling at Shane.
“Are they here? Can I meet them?” Shane asked, his face lighting up at the mention of other kids.
“No, they are at home,” Ashley replied smiling at him, she had never seen a kid so adorable.
“Shane? Shane? Where are you?” A male voice called, making Ashley feel like she was dreaming at how familiar it sounded.
“That’s my dad,” Shane said looking back at the origin of the voice. Ashley froze as Shane ran to his father; she didn’t want to look back.
“Dad, look I found a nice lady she’s Ashley, Ashley come say hello to my dad,” Shane said calling out to her. Jordan looked at the familiar back of a woman before him, making him tense up.
There was no way that was possible but when she turned and their eyes locked the world stood still. Both speechless as their eyes grew wide with mixed emotions playing in them.
“Ash?” Jordan mumbled looking at the woman before him in both surprise and disbelief. Jordan took steps forward, as if trying to make sense of the odds of meeting her there. “Dad, do you know her? Her name is Miss Ashley not Ash,” Shane asked looking between them. Ashley stood there with her legs and mind urging her to run while her heart protested, beating fast. As she noticed him take steps forward her mind flipped making her take long steps backwards. “No, Shane, I don't know your dad, but it's nice to finally meet him, but I've got to go now, see you later,” Ashley blurred, noticing the hurt that crossed Jordan's eyes but quickly disappeared. The thought that she managed to hurt him even in the slightest made her feel her heart swell in pride. Jordan watched his once love hastily leaving as if trying to run away from him. He couldn't stop the hurt feeling that filled his heart. She had changed so much, and she was nowhere near Ashley from years ago who couldn't defend hersel
“You what! What the hell, Ash? Why didn't you tell me?” Lindsey snapped as she heard Ashley mention her ex-husband's name in the room. “Calm down Lin, what was I supposed to say to you? We just met accidentally at the airport, his son actually…” “His son! He has a son with that… That son of a b**ch! What's he doing in Washington?” Lindsey cursed, as she ran her hands through her hair. Ashley understood her friend's reaction, she wished she could react in the same way. “I don't know Lin, I told you we met accidentally,” Ashley explained, the scene replaying in her mind. If that little boy wasn't there, she had a feeling things would get heated up. She couldn't get her mind off the hungry look he nailed on her face throughout that moment. And like witchcraft, she couldn't help but welcome it. “Right, then I think we better keep you away from him,” Lindsey suggested but saw how far gone in thoughts Ashley already was. It was clear there were some ties still not severed between the
Pinned to the wall Ashley felt confused as her watery eyes looked at the man before him. “What are you doing Dan? What's this?” Ashley asked, her voice coming out breathless. “What's wrong with you, love? I thought you would be excited. I decided to make a bold move, we both know what we want, I mean c'mon Ash,” Danton said looking at her with his eyes filled with a hungry lust. Ashley felt her body tremble on seeing him like that. Danton was always composed but right now, the man before her was nowhere near the Danton she knew. “Please can you at least let me go first you're hurting me,” Ashley said trying to wiggle her wrists out of his firm hold. “C'mon Ash, do you think I'm stupid? You want to go running back to that beast's arms right?” Danton said, squeezing her wrists even harder, his face cringed in anger. Ashley looked at him in confusion, she had told him lightly of her past relationship, but she didn't think he took it too personally. He always claimed he was like her
Pacing through the hospital corridors, Jordan couldn't help but feel restless. Maya had been undergoing a series of tests for a few hours now, so they had to wait. His left jaw stung as the purple bruise remained quite visible, a sign of whatever he portrayed last night. Either bravery or stupidity, he couldn't watch Ashley get mistreated on his watch. The near call on her made him feel like he needed to protect her even more. Jordan noticed a nurse approaching, making him walk towards her in hope. “How are the tests coming along?” He asked calmly, it didn't surprise him that he felt more impatient than panic waiting on his wife. She was not the same woman he took back five years ago, she had turned into his nightmare. “Sir, we're waiting for a senior doctor and a consultant, she'll explain everything to you,” the nurse explained, smiling politely at him, probably mistaking his mood for panic. Sitting down for a few more minutes, Jordan couldn't stop his mind from running back t
Before Danton could get a chance to touch her another time, Ashley felt him get yanked from her. “What kind of man are you? Huh?” Ashley heard a voice she thought she knew, but her brain couldn't register anything. As she heard the rustling in the room, she knew whoever saved her was in a fight with Danton. She couldn't push her eyes open, she didn't have the courage to. “I'll kill you today!” Danton retaliated, delivering a blue on the man's face. “She's in here!” Finally, a voice she knew came in, making her open her eyes slowly to search for Lindsey. “Where is he?” Lindsey entered the locker room with a series of guards behind her. “He ran out as soon as he heard you,” Jordan said, touching his mouth as he wiped off the blood on his busted lip. He had noticed Ashley going into the room, but he didn't see her go out. In curiosity, he drew closer just to hear the man from last night's voice making him act quickly. Seeing him practically on Ashley, Jordan couldn't take it, an
Jordan stormed into the room following his outraged wife. “Maya! What the f**king hell was that?” He cursed seeing red in rage on his wife's wild behavior. Maya turned to him, smiling as if she didn't understand what he was so angry about. “What babe? I was just fighting for my man, if I let all those wh*res jump your bones under my watch, what kind of life am I, huh?” She responded, trying to justify what she did. Her statement hitting Jordan with shock, “Are you f**king serious right now? Lin would never do that and you know it! What am I even explaining…” Jordan trailed off realizing she was trying to throw him off track with her allegations. “Why don't you tell me about the fact that your test results show you underwent a total hysterectomy years ago?” Jordan asked as he watched her face turn white as a sheet. He couldn't tell if it was in shock or surprise, with Maya he had learned to expect anything. The room fell awfully silent, the chatty Maya now just opening and closin
Ashley stood there frozen looking at the man she once loved. Her heart raced fast as she looked at her best friend in confusion who mirrored her expression. “Jordan?” Ashley mumbled, turning to look at the two men before her. “You three know each other?” Luke asked knowing he was the only one who appeared to be in the dark. “This Ashley and this, well, this must be your Lin, I should have guessed but…” Jordan trailed as his face dawned in realization. A car pulled over in the parking lot taking their attention. “Mommy, Mommy, you are home,” soft chatters filled the compound as three kids ran towards Ashley. Jordan could have sworn he was running mad when he noticed how the two boys looked exactly like him. Ashley froze as she embraced her excited children who ran past Jordan and Luke without a word. She kept her eyes evaded from Jordan because she knew there was no turning back from that moment. “Aunt Lin!” The triplets' attention turned to their aunt in excitement. “Hey my b
The car drive was nothing short of quiet and cold, no one was ready to start with addressing the issue at hand. For once in many years, Jordan didn’t know what to say. “I’m guessing that didn’t go well at all?” Luke asked, breaking the silence as he drove. He could clearly tell from Jordan's quiet mood. “Dude, I have children, triplets, I can’t imagine what Ash had to go through on her own,” Jordan said, still not in agreement with the news. To think that he told Ashley he was moving to Washington permanently. He hadn’t thought of that, but after seeing his kids, he couldn’t bear to be away anymore. “I didn’t know you knew my gal, and your ex-wife…damn! She’s…” Luke was ready to compliment when Jordan stopped him. “Don’t even finish that sentence, she’s mine!” Jordan said possessively before he could even control how he felt. “Oh my hands are up, man, she’s all yours,” Luke said, raising his arms playfully in surrender. Jordan smiled looking away, his mind taking him back to
In the alley beside Wilson Hotel;Ashley felt herself being dragged in the dark alley making her struggle to scream. The hand let loose a little, “Ssh, it's me, don't shout,” Ashley heard a woman's voice in the alley making calm down a little. “I know you don't know me, but you know him, right?” The woman asked, revealing a boy behind her. Ashley felt shocked as she saw Shane sleeping out in the cold but was well covered. “I am…” “Elizabeth, the boy's biological mother,” Ashley interjected, letting her know he knew about her. “Yes, Shane's in trouble, Maya knows I took the boy, we were supposed to meet at a certain location to stay there, but knowing Maya, I don't want Shane near him,” Elizabeth explained as she kept glancing around in panic. Ashley stood there dismayed not knowing what to say. “Please take him with you, he told me so much about you, he trusts you, please,” Elizabeth pleaded with her, holding her hand gently. “Where is my son?” Ashley asked, looking at her in
As the car drove around the city, Ashley felt her mind go miles away. She tried to gather enough strength to face all that was ahead of her. She knew no amount of the fear she felt could outdo the anticipation to see her son again. “We're here, ma'am,” the taxi driver said, pulling Ashley out from her wondrous thoughts. She saw the tall building of the hotel making her breath in sharply before proceeding. The chilly air of the night seeped through her lungs like a sharp knife, taunting her. A text came to her phone from the same new number. ‘Come straight across the street and meet me beside the hotel, I can see you come straight.’ The instructions read, making Ashley glance beside the hotel, her eyes falling on a dark spot. No matter how much her mind warned her against proceeding with the pursuit, Ashley didn't have the heart to stop. As her steps got closer, everything in her was screaming for her to stop, but she couldn't. She looked around but all she could see were some hom
Ashley saw the evening of another day without her child, making her heart clench painfully. As the doorbell rang, she couldn't help but feel as if that were music in her ears. The many times she had run to that door thinking maybe her son was home disheartened her. She couldn't face any more disappointment of not seeing her son walk through that door. She could feel her hope hanging on a string as she wiped another set of tears. Lindsey had taken the kids away, she could only hope they didn't ask endless questions about their sibling. The door opened, ushering in a panting Jordan. Ashley stood up looking at him in awe, “What happened? Did they find him?” Ashley asked, offering him a seat but all he could do was shake his head. What he said next made her feel her head swirl in dizziness. “I think they might have Shane too, he was just taken from the house, minutes ago…” Jordan said still in disbelief, hearing himself say the words out loud took a toll on him. “What? How?” Ashley
Jordan couldn't wipe the smile off his face as he held the results in his hand. It appeared he only needed to talk to Maya about how he treated their son. “Babe, I want to go visit my cousin for a few days,” Maya informed, smiling at Jordan from a meter away. Jordan furrowed his brows, wondering why Maya would bring up such a topic all of a sudden. The fact that she wasn't mad about him requesting for DNA shook him, too. “You are not mad that I had DNA done behind your back?” Jordan couldn't hold the question in again as he let it out. Maya moved towards him with a broadened smile. “It's okay if you wanted to be certain, but now I have to leave right now, I don’t want to be late,” Maya pressed on evading the DNA discussion. “I didn't know you had family here? Are you taking Shane with you?” Jordan asked the questions with concern written all over his face. Her sudden trip unsettling him, especially after the disappearance of his son. Though he hadn’t talked to her about Ashle
“Ash, you have to pull yourself together, please, for Brandon and Brenda,” Lindsey said, soothing Ashley's back gently. Ashley shook her head, looking at her friend, her eyes red from all the crying. She had never felt her world come to a standstill in just a matter of a day. A lone tear found its way down her cheek, making Lindsey feel her tears sting her eyes. “Please don't cry, it'll be okay, the police are on this, you have to stay strong,” Lin pleaded, feeling her eyes well up irresistibly. Soft steps stopped by their side, “Ashley…” Jordan's voice came, making Ashley snap her head towards him. Jordan felt a hint of Déjà vu as he remembered the last time he saw her that devastated. He couldn’t stop the horrid feeling, worrying that she would end up in a hospital bed again. On the other hand, Ashley looked at him, not saying a word as she felt her strength fail her. She couldn’t feel any strength left in her to start any argument with him. “I’ll go check up on the kids, Ash
Cheering fell in the room after Ashley and the kids finally cut the cake. The event went smoothly making Ashley feel her heart get content. Standing for hours, she felt her bladder pressing her making her quickly head to the restroom. Leaving behind all the laughing and chatters Ashley made her way through the crowd. Seeing quite a turn-out at the party made her feel humbled, finally her Heart to Heart Organization was up and running officially. Meanwhile, Jordan smiled at the enthusiastic children before him. “Jordan? Will you be coming to visit us?” Brandon asked, looking at him with his eyes filled with hope. “Of course, I'll ask mommy if I can come, and I'll bring Shane along,” Jordan answered yet another from the boy. He had lost count of Brandon's and Brenda's questions. Having his kids around him made his heart swell in pride. At a distance, Bryson sat not interested in what they were talking about, making Jordan feel his heart clench. “Bryson? What's wrong?” Jordan ask
Ashley stood by the door, her blue long dress hugging her hips like a second skin. She could sense everyone’s eyes on her as she maneuvered her way behind Lindsey but all she could feel was worried more than excited. Ashley smiled as she watched her kids playing happily in the playroom. She had doubled security; she was not ready to take any chances after the letter. “Wipe that worry of your face Ash, the detective assured me if he came anywhere near here, they’ll grab him in an instant,” Lindsey said standing beside her making Ashley take a few steps back. “They look so adorable just like their mom,” Lindsey complimented admiring the decorated kids who played with no worry whatsoever. Ashley huffed audibly before smiling at Lindsey’s comment, “I pray today ends well because I’m still worried.” Lindsey soothed her back reassuringly, “You need to relax today is a special day for all of us, and I have a surprise for you by the way.” Ashley looked at her suspiciously as Lindsey gig
Maya looked around as she stood by her car, tapping her fingers impatiently on her lap. Through the light of the night streetlights, she could see him approaching. “What took you so long?” She asked angrily when he got closer. “Sorry I had something to take care of,” the man with the hood answered with a stern voice. “Doesn't matter. Is everything ready for tomorrow?” Maya asked, swinging her car keys in her finger. “Are you sure you want to do this?” The man asked, his voice filled with doubt. “What's wrong? Are you backing down?” Maya asked, looking at him suspiciously. “No, he needs to pay for what he did to us,” the man swore, clenching his fists in anger. “Good, let's give them a grand day tomorrow, and be certain your plan will work perfectly. I don't want any surprises,” Maya warned, grinning evilly. She had been praying for such a chance for years, and she wasn't going to screw it up. “No surprises love, now can I get my special night treat?” The man asked last, fille
