DEVANCE immediately sat on the black leather couch when they arrived home in Bhaktapur. The house was only a ten-minute drive from the airport. The traffic was tolerable, and they didn’t have a stressful trip.
“Shall I call Vijay to check the chopper for tomorrow?” Austin asked. He referred to their private pilot, who maintains the family-owned choppers in Nepal.
They had two helicopters at home. Both were parked at the helipad of their mansion on the sixth floor. They often used it when the whole family was on vacation here and usually when they wanted to see the Everest Region from above.
“Yeah, let him check the engine. I’ll pilot the chopper going to Lukla.” Devance breathed out.
Devance might be easy-go-lucky, but he was a licensed private pilot. He had the rank of captain, carrying four stripes in his uniform. He attended a prestigious aviation school in Amsterdam a couple of years ago.
They paused for a moment when the house’s caretaker came in. She was Bilhana, in her early fifties. A pure Nepali who had been serving the Chaudhary’s for quite a long time.
“Sir, shall I prepare your tea?” Bilhana asked after she greeted them.
“Yes, please. Thank you.” Devance lightly smiled.
Bilhana arched her head and quickly turned, going to the kitchen.
“All right, I’ll equip our gears. Are you sure you want to trek at EBC, not the summit?” Austin sat beside him.
“I would love to. But I didn’t train for the summit. I want to ease my mind for all these shits!” Devance groaned. He was not in his best mood when he thought about the arranged marriage. His dad must be out of his mind! Yes, it was part of their tradition, but he was very vocal that he would never practice such a thing.
For heaven’s sake, he only just turned twenty-nine! He hadn’t thoroughly enjoyed his single life, and he would make sure not to marry a stranger.
“Sir—I mean, Dev, don’t get me wrong, but I’d be happy to settle down if I were you. Your father wouldn’t choose just anybody. He picked the best for you, I’m sure.” Austin cleared his throat. This was the first time he gave a piece of advice about Devance’s personal life. Austin knew him well. Girls typically flocked to him because of his status and good looks, which he was also affected by it since he would be the one to show up on a date if he didn’t like the girl.
“Whose side are you rooting? Come on. You’re just a year senior to me. We’re still young!” Devance clicked his tongue.
“Well, If I find the right woman. I’ll get married right away. I want to see my offspring as soon as possible.” Austin gently shook his shoulder.
Bilhana came back with two cups of hot jasmine tea.
“Dhanyabad,” Devance said politely. It was the Nepali term for ‘thank you’.
Devance smelled the aroma of the tea. It made him feel relaxed. He slowly sipped it and felt the warm sensation inside his throat.
“This is why I like tea better than coffee.” He put his cup on the glass table, “Anyway, I’ll swim a few laps later. Then I’ll sleep early.”
Austin nodded while holding his cup of tea. “All right, I’ll meet Vijay after this.”
Devance exhaled and glanced through the high glass window of the living room. From his location, he could vividly see the exhilarating view of the Himalayas even at a far distance.
“WHAT the hell is the meaning of this?!” Triana’s eyes broadened in shock when they reached their trek’s jump-off point in Lukla. She was astounded to see the approaching familiar face with a shy smile. It was none other than Nehan—Lara’s ex-boyfriend!
It appeared he would also join the trek since he brought a blue hiking bag with a folded trekking pole in the side pocket.
“Hello, Ria!” The man greeted her but couldn’t look straight into her eyes.
He glared at him and grabbed Lara’s arm. She confronted her a few meters away from Nehan.
“Are you out of your mind? I knew it! This is why you were so excited because you will have a tryst with your ex-boyfriend!” Triana did not conceal her disappointment.
“I’m sorry, I just want to talk to him.” Lara averted her gaze.
“Lars, why? He is married now! Are you planning to be his mistress? What were you thinking?”
Lara bit her lower lip. “But we were in a relationship a month ago, and he is just trapped in an arranged marriage.”
Triana hardly closed her eyes to control her temper. It seemed Lara wouldn’t even listen no matter what she said. Honestly, she felt sorry for her. Especially when Lara raised her head, her eyes welled up in tears.
“I want closure. Please, don’t get mad. I know what I’m doing.”
Triana heaved a sigh. “Fine! You’re not a kid anymore, Lars. But make sure it’s only on this trek. I will not tolerate you acting as his mistress after this.”
Lara’s lips turned up, and she smiled. “I know you’ll understand me. Thank you!” She was so happy that she even kissed Triana’s both cheeks.
Triana rolled her eyes.
Nehan cleared his throat when he approached the girls. “How many joiners are we expecting?”
Their male guide answered. “This is an exclusive private trek. We only accommodated five people.”
Nehan nodded. “All right. Let’s wait for the others.”
All of them were startled when they overheard a sound of an approaching chopper. They all looked up and witnessed a red helicopter preparing to land.
“What the hell?” Triana was annoyed as hell when the thick dust had covered her face. She had to rub her eyes since she hadn’t worn her sunglasses yet.
Her eyes narrowed when she glanced at the pilot, who looked down at them. The pilot wore brown aviation sunglasses, and he slowly removed it after the landing.
A white guy went out from the passenger side, holding two large hiking bags. He looked familiar. Triana had to think about where she had seen the man. It took her a while before she realized who he was.
“What the heck are they doing here?” Triana turned to Lara, who only shrugged.
“They are the remaining joiners,” Nim said, their Nepali guide. Beside him were their two porters in their early thirties.
“Wait, aren’t they the two hot guys on the plane from Kuala Lumpur? What a small world!” Lara exclaimed when she recognized the newcomers.
“What a showoff!” Triana whispered in displeasure. It seemed these men had another pilot because the chopper immediately flew when they got out.
“The other guy looked familiar,” Nehan said, trying to recognize the tan-skinned man.
“Are we late?” asked the pilot earlier when he reached the group.
“Just in time,” Nim answered as he gave a furtive glance to his gray sports watch. The guide looked at everyone, and he added, “Before we proceed with the trek proper, let’s introduce each other. Oh, that’s quite a nice rhyme.”
Everyone giggled.
Then all titled their heads in agreement.
“CALL me, Nim, and I’ll be your guide for this EBC trek.” The man introduced himself. And then he looked at his two companions. “These are Adesh and Hem, your porters.”The porters lightly arched their heads. They seemed shy. At the same time, Nim exchanged a firm handshake with everyone.“I’m Nehan,” he said as he stood beside Lara.“Lara.” She raised one hand.“I’m Austin.” He grinned and pointed the man at his side, “and this is Devance.”Triana’s one brow raised, and she couldn’t help but say something unfriendly. “Is your friend mute or something?”But she was a little dumbfounded when the man raised his hand for a handshake. “I didn’t know you wanted my name that bad. You can call me Dev. What’s your name?”Everyone made fun of them. The team was teasing that they make a good pair. Triana felt as if all her blood had surged up. She looked at her companions before she accepted the man’s hand with hesitation.“Triana.” She casually put her hand in the pocket of her gray trekking p
EVERYONE went back to the trail in the morning time after they had their breakfast at the inn. Triana tried her best to ignore Devance because of what happened a few hours ago. Her hatred towards the man grew even more. She couldn’t stand his overly confident attitude. He was so full of himself! His presence alone made her feel uneasy. And speaking of the devil, it seemed he had already developed the habit of pestering her. Devance walked in her direction, and their eyes met.“Hey, Austin! Can you please look at my hydration pack,” he was smirking and not breaking his eye contact with her. He uttered those words in the Filipino language.Austin quickly came over. And he answered back in the same local language. “Why, is there a leak? I checked it earlier. I made sure it’s fine.”Triana gaped at them as her jaw dropped. She could not believe these two could speak Tagalog with ease!Austin glanced at her. He seemed to enjoy making fun of her, too. “Are you surprised, my lady? We are Fil
TRIANA woke up in an unfamiliar room. She massaged her temple because the throbbing pain would not subside. It took her a while to finally move free while remembering what happened. Her eyes widened when she realized what had occurred during the trek. She recalled her severe altitude sickness. Probably Lara had been worried, and the team despised her for ruining the itinerary of their trek. They were about to reach the Basecamp in a day, but she was careless about her health.Triana got up and leaned on the headboard. Her eyes traveled around as she studied the room. Based on the luxury fixtures around her, she was not in a hospital because she recognized some famous paintings proudly mounted on the wall. What is this place, and where is Lara? Stretching her legs down carefully, she could stand without being lightheaded. She started to walk unhurriedly, going to the terrace to know her location. The sun was already up, and a cold wind greeted her.It appeared that her room was locat
DEVANCE carefully drove his bike, and they reached their destination without inconvenience. It was the famous Nagarkot village. However, they had to go to some unpaved road, which Triana had been complaining about because she expected a decent highway since it was a road toward a well-known tourist destination. They went down the bike and had a mini hike going up a hill where they could vividly see the Himalayas. Unfortunately, when they reached the summit, there was no clearing. It was nothing but thick fog.Devance lightly shook his head and smiled apologetically. “Sorry girls, it might rain anytime with these cloud formations.”“This place is heavenly if only it’s not cloudy,” said Austin. Lara dived into the conversation. “It’s all right. We are thankful for your efforts to drive us here. Besides, weather up in the mountain is unpredictable.”And as if on cue, it began to drizzle. “Let’s go. It’s raining!” Devance called out.Everyone ran going down the concrete stairs because i
EARLY in the morning, Triana knocked at Lara’s room. It was almost dawn, and her friend lazily moved as she opened the door. Her hair was all disheveled, and the dark circles in Lara’s eyes were visible.“What’s the matter? It’s too early. I’ve only been asleep for an hour!” Lara stared at her in disbelief. “Come on, Lars. Get a shower, quick! We need to leave here now.” Triana pushed her going to the bathroom. “What is your problem?” Lara was annoyed. “I’ll explain later. Come on!”“It’s impolite to leave without saying goodbye to our host. Are you that shameless?” Lara held her temple as if summoning energy because she was feeling dull.“I know! But something happened last night.”Lara turned her head out of curiosity. “Why, what happened?”“Well…” Triana hesitated whether she’d tell what had happened last night. She swallowed hard before she went on, “H-he tried to kiss me…”“Okay, and?”“That’s it! He shouldn’t have done that without my consent!”Lara rolled her eyes heavenward
“MOM, Dad! I didn’t know you were coming home.” Devance was surprised to see his parents drinking tea on the roof deck. Bilhana was busy catering to their needs. He just got back from jogging in the nearby temple, and his parents didn’t inform him that they were back in Nepal. One week went by since Triana and Lara left the house. Devance was busy with his workout and gardening to pass the time. He loved plants and anything about nature. It was a good form of meditation for him.“Good thing you’re here now. We have been back here to catch you because we’re going to the Philippines,” Akhil said after sipping tea.Devance kissed his mother’s cheek and sat beside her. “Why? Is there a problem?”They paused for a moment when Bilhana served his tea. His mother held his hand over the table. The way she gestured her hand, Devance sensed something was wrong.“Mom?”Akhil heaved a sigh. “You’re going to have a date with your soon-to-be-bride.”The Chaudhary patriarch said those phrases casuall
DEVANCE went down the car along with his parents. Austin drove them because they didn’t bring a lot of bodyguards to stay low key. This could be his engagement, but he had already taken precautionary measures, especially if he was left with no choice. Devance only agreed to meet the girl because his father had frozen most of his assets when he argued with him again a few days after they arrived in Nepal. He tried to push his luck, but it seemed his fate was already sealed. Now he came to the Philippines to see his fiancée-to-be, though he ensured the wedding would never happen. Devance never asked his parents about the girl. More on, he was not interested. Every time the arranged marriage came to mind, his stress level soared.Devance studied the surroundings around. He stood near the doorway of a modern two-story house with a roof deck. Beside the building was a garden. No wonder this place looked familiar. He finally remembered he was here sometime three years ago. Slowly, things we
ON THE other side, Devance had to blink several times to make sure he was not hallucinating. He was caught off guard by these revelations he never expected. How the hell did this happen?Tri? He casually offered his hand and remained level-headed.“Nice meeting you,” he said seriously. Devance didn’t want to let his parents know he had met Triana before, unless he got a chance to talk with her.“S-same here.” Triana reluctantly exchanged a firm handshake. It took her a while to act normal with her wonder-stricken face.Just how fast the night changes. He silently clicked his tongue.Earlier, he was ready to show how disgusted he was regarding the arranged marriage. But in a blink of an eye, everything changes. Even Austin was shocked at a distance, though he only remained silent. They went to the dining room, and he gently tapped Triana’s shoulder. Until now, it seemed she was still astounded. But she harshly removed his hand, and then he found himself smiling. Devance assisted her i
ONE week had passed quickly, and the moment Triana had waited for so long came. At last, she’d meet Caleb tomorrow in Paris. It was a perfect time since their parents went to Barcelona for a few days’ vacation. And after that, the Chaudharys would travel to Iceland for the holidays. It was Triana’s idea to celebrate Christmas Eve under the Northern Lights. Then they’d return to the Philippines for the New Year’s celebration and the fourth death anniversary of her father.“You’re beaming today,” Devance complimented her while fixing her things.“Of course, finally I can see the love of my life after almost three months! The well is getting dry.”Devance looked at her, confused. “The… what?!”“Oh, never mind.” Triana giggled. It seemed that Devance’s dirty humor was contagious. Unlike before, she could joke around with him like this because she was comfortable.“Did I hear it right? The well is getting dry?” Devance laughed out loud. “Sorry for being slow. I didn’t know you had this sen
INSIDE Caleb’s office in Makati, everyone was busy with the preliminary bidding on the conference room. He was not obliged to attend because he had already assigned this task to his Project Manager. Caleb sat comfortably on his swivel chair while browsing pictures from Lara’s social media account. She was with Triana. The latter had no penchant for this kind of update because she valued her privacy. It appeared that she was already in Paris. Triana must be waiting for his arrival so they could celebrate the Christmas holidays together. Caleb was only fixing his schedule so that everything would still be in order when he left for a few days. Then something popped into his notification that Lara posted a story. Caleb’s jaw immediately flexed when he saw Devance kiss Triana in the background. It could be a simple gesture, but it stirred his jealousy. They looked so sweet, like a real couple having fun.Caleb hardly clasped his cell phone and harshly sighed. He almost broke it when he put
THE house was peaceful again after the Festival of Lights. Triana’s family returned to the Philippines after enjoying their vacation. Akhil requested a family meeting inside the library on the third floor.“We will proceed with the European trip. You will join us to meet different investors and attend several business conferences as part of your training before I appoint you as the top-ranking executives of the company. Being the Chairman and the CEO of AGC is no joke, I’m telling you,” Akhil explained to the couple. Gracia was seated beside him, listening in silence.Triana and Devance tilted their heads. “We’ll do everything to help you grow your empire, Dad.”“With my guidance. I know you will,” Akhil was confident.“I admit I’m easy-go-lucky, but I took my studies seriously when I went to Oxford.” Devance sounded proud. He looked at Triana and winked. Because aside from the flight school in Amsterdam, he also attended a business course at Oxford University.“I promise to help as w
THE Festival of Lights finally came, and just as expected, the Chaudharys were busy attending to their guests, mainly extended families from different parts of the world. They were Akhil’s relatives, and there was a feast for a few days. Lucia, along with the twins, also arrived to celebrate with them. The house was full of colorful lights. Triana felt this festival was equal to Christmas. Until now, she couldn’t memorize these numerous festivals of this country. But one of the things that surprised her was that their calendar year was approximately more than fifty-six years ahead compared to the Gregorian calendar. Everything she learned about Devance’s heritage made her in awe.The celebration lasted for almost a week. Triana could not deny she was exhausted from socializing with the visitors. And she had to sleep with Devance every night to avoid suspicion. Devance had been complaining about his backache from sleeping on the couch since Triana would not let him sleep on the same be
DEXA angrily entered her room and shoved a few crystal vases with fresh red roses on the bedside table. Everything broke, and yet it was not enough. She even kicked a large ceramic vase in her collection. It was her favorite, and too late for her to regret despite realizing her hardship of acquiring it from China, and it was recorded from the Qing Dynasty. The intricate pottery was shattered into pieces.“Damn you, bitch!” She was so mad at Triana and disappointed in her father, especially with Devance. She couldn’t believe they’d joined forces to humiliate her.“Liars!” Dexa was enraged. She knew Xavier was not perfect, but she was sure he loved her and would never do such an odious thing to Triana. He promised to start a new life with her before they married two years ago. He even swore that he’d change for the better only for her. And she believed him.She scurried to the walk-in closet. It was full of her luxury collections of bags and shoes. But she only got her few favorites and
“I’M SORRY, darling.” Triana was teary-eyed as she glanced at Caleb. They immediately went back to the hotel because Akhil had called her. He asked where they were at the moment. As if making sure that she was with Devance.“No need to be sorry. You know I always understand you. Somehow, I’ve predicted this will happen once you get married. And I settled with it, right? I’m happy at least we’re together even for two days.” Caleb embraced her tight. He helped her pack her things after a while.Triana bit her lower lip when everything was ready. Sadness clouded her heart. She didn’t know when to see him again. She knew Caleb was a very busy man, and he would always make time for her. Just like now, he traveled extra miles to meet her.She hugged him from his back. “I’ll miss you. I promise to find ways to meet you again. Devance will help us.”Caleb heaved a sigh. He clasped her hand and faced her. “I see you’re getting close to Devance. I admit I’m jealous and afraid you’d fall for him
AT DINNERTIME, Devance and Austin ate together with the three women they met at the tour in the Tiger’s Nest earlier. They learned that the girls were from Australia. It appeared they were getting itchy to warm their beds in private.“Aren’t you going to do something to disturb the couple again?” Austin suddenly asked while they were eating. He only started talking when the women excused themselves to retouch their make-up in the ladies’ room.Devance only shrugged. “Nope, I was just making fun earlier. I want to respect their privacy as long as Tri is happy. She deserves it.”“I see,” Austin nodded. “A lot of things happen when you’re away, Austin. I almost killed a man.” Devance suddenly remembered the night when Xavier forced Triana. And no words could appease his anger until now.Austin’s face beamed with interest. He hadn’t told him yet about the incident.“Why, what happened?” Austin sounded concerned. “Xavier, that bastard, came to Triana’s room in the middle of the night….”
“DON’T you think it’s immature for you to do?” Austin couldn’t hold himself to reprimand Devance. They were occupying the suite beside Triana and Caleb’s room.“Can’t you see it’s fun?” Devance clicked his tongue. He leaned his back on the cream-colored leather couch. Devance found everything hilarious, and there was nothing wrong with what he had done. He knew Caleb and Triana missed each other so much. Making fun of them was something he loved to do.He planned everything since he was still on the plane; he brought flowers outside the airport, and upon reaching the hotel, Devance called the room service to give a special breakfast to the next room. He just gave specific instructions and time intervals. Even the monk was his accomplice. Of course, Austin had a point. This was immature. But he enjoyed annoying her off.Devance was silently laughing as he imagined Triana’s pissed-off face. But he couldn’t hide how worried he was about the incident the other day. He admired her strong
TRIANA found that Dexa and Xavier were not in the house the next day. Devance informed her beforehand, and she was glad. She’d have her peace of mind. She freshened up quickly. Triana thought it was just a nightmare. She was thankful that Devance never left her side. She was so scared last night, thinking Xavier might be back to force her again.“Are you ready?” Devance asked when he entered the room. And as usual, he had just come from the swimming pool with a white towel covering his lower body.“I’ll have my tea.” She tried to smile and avert her gaze to his torso. “Thanks, about last night.”“Oh, don’t mention it. Let’s catch the flight at nine.” “A-about that, I think I changed my mind.” She hesitated to tell him the reason.“But why?” His forehead creased. Triana knew he was just anxious about her condition. That was why he suddenly decided to return to the Philippines. She cleared her throat. “Caleb called a few minutes ago, and he confirmed his flight going to Bhutan a day af
