“YOU ARE THE ONE who betrayed our marriage.”
The biting reproach brought back the painful memories, Adriana had desperately tried to forgot, which rushed back to her mind like a flood.
(FLASHBACK)
Three years earlier, Adriana had been the daughter of the Clarke family and the wife of the wealthiest man in the country, Calvin Walker, CEO of Grand Empire. People had envied her for having him as her husband, but Adriana was the only one who truly knew the reality of their relationship.
Despite knowing that Calvin didn’t love her, she had married him, believing that as long as she loved him, he would eventually fall in love with her.
But Adriana’s belief had been nothing more than wishful thinking. In their three years of marriage, the number of times she had seen him could be counted on one hand.
Although Calvin treated her coldly, Adriana, like a stubborn fool, had tried to warm his heart.
Then, that rainy night changed everything.
Adriana opened her eyes and felt her head spinning. She tried to support herself with her hand, attempting to sit up, but before she could, a strong arm pulled her back.
“Baby, where are you going?” the man said.
Hearing the unfamiliar voice, Adriana was shocked and turned to look at the half-naked man lying beside her. Her mind went blank as she pulled the blanket over her body.
“Who are you?” she asked, her voice shaky.
“I…”
Before the man could finish speaking, the door to the room was kicked open.
Adriana looked up, and her heart skipped a beat when she saw Calvin standing there with a dark expression on his face. He walked toward her with long, determined strides and glared at her coldly. His eyes were so frosty that she shivered in fear.
“I didn’t expect you to be so shameless…” he spat out, his tone icy.
“No, Calvin, it’s not like this! I don’t know…” Adriana stammered, trying to explain herself.
But before she could finish, he grabbed her roughly and dragged her out of the bed, pulling her toward the door.
He threw her to the ground once they were outside, in the parking lot. Then, he took something out of the car and tossed it at her face.
“Sign it and get out of my life,” he said coldly.
Adriana looked down at the papers in her hands, her heart sinking when she saw the words "Divorce Agreement."
Her mind raced in shock, but before she could process anything, Calvin got into the car and sped away, leaving her alone in the parking lot. She stood there, staring after him, as tears welled up in her eyes.
“I loved this man for so many years… I did everything to be a good wife, and yet he throws divorce papers in my face without even giving me a chance to explain…” she muttered bitterly, a laugh escaping her lips—half incredulous, half broken.
Adriana composed herself and returned to her parents’ house, seeking refuge in the only place that had ever felt like home.
But the next day, things took a darker turn.
She received a notice from the court stating that her Bar License had been revoked, accusing her of accepting bribes and leaking confidential client information.
Then the police arrived at her home and arrested her older brother for selling illegal drugs. Despite their pleas of innocence, the police refused to listen.
Just as she was about to take action and fight for her brother’s release, she heard her mother’s voice behind her, desperate and trembling.
“Honey…”
Adriana spun around, only to see her father clutching his chest, his face pale and ashen.
Panic surged through her as she rushed to his side, taking him to the hospital. After what felt like an eternity in the waiting room, the doors to the operating room finally opened, and the doctor stepped out.
“How is my father?” Adriana asked urgently.
“He had a heart attack. The operation was successful, but we’ll have to wait 24 hours to see how he responds,” the doctor explained.
Adriana’s heart dropped. The weight of everything was almost too much to bear. Her mother, overwhelmed by the shock, collapsed beside her.
“Mom!” Adriana cried out, holding her mother up.
To make matters worse, the shareholders of her family’s company began selling their shares, afraid of angering Calvin, who had seemingly orchestrated everything. Within a week, the company went bankrupt.
In short, Adriana’s entire family paid the price for her stubbornness in marrying a heartless man.
Because of Calvin’s influence, no one would help them. Even small restaurants refused to hire them.
With no other option, Adriana and her family left the country.
Abroad, they started over from scratch. Adriana’s parents worked as a driver and maid, while her brother and sister-in-law took jobs as a waiter and delivery driver.
It took Adriana three long years to pick up the broken pieces of her heart and find the courage to return home. During those years, she studied hard and regained her Bar License.
(FLASHBACK ENDS)
After returning to the country, Adriana had no intention of crossing paths with Calvin again.
But fate had other plans. Within a month of her return, she ran into him once more.
It felt as though life was playing a cruel joke on her.
Adriana collapsed to the ground, her heart aching.
She had thought she had became brave enough and move on from her loveless marriage three years ago, and her suffering she and her family endured over the years.
But now, when she faced Calvin again, she realized that it was all her wishful thinking. She still got affected by him and her heart still ached because of his cold words.
Moreover, it is quite obvious that he has no intention of letting her off.
Seeing Adriana squatting down like this, Calvin couldn't help but frown. He thought that she was just pretending to be weak to gain his sympathy."Adriana, you don't have to pretend in front of me, I know you well! Just get the hell out of here! I can't stand your hypocrisy. It made me feel disgusted!" Calvin said coldly.Hearing his words, Adriana felt as if someone had stabbed a knife in her heart. She wanted to stand up and leave, but the weight of those memories was too much for her to bear.Adriana felt that as if her legs got weak, and all her energy of her body had been drained out. No matter how hard she tried to stand up, she couldn't."Calvin?"Just then a sweet woman's voice came, breaking the tension.Adriana looked up, only to see a beautiful woman walking towards them. The woman was wearing a white shirt and black skirt, with delicate, fair skin. Her long black hair cascaded down her back, making her look even more beautiful."Rose! What are you doing here?" Calvin asked
Adriana had just got into the car, took a few deep breaths to calm herself down, and the phone in her bag rang –Beep, beep, beep…Adrianalooked at her phone. It was a call from her assistant, Mona."Hello?" she answered the phone."Ma'am, where are you? It's already one o'clock, why haven't you arrived at the court yet?"Only then did Adriana remember that today was the final hearing of the White family case in court. Because of Calvin, she almost forgot about it."Mona, prepare all the documents related to the case and wait there for me. I will be there in twenty minutes," she said. The case wasn't very complicated. It was an appeal case on behalf of a victim of school violence.By the time the trial ended, it was already five o'clock. The defense lawyer had tried to use the minor protection law to help his client get off, but Adriana had presented twenty cases to testify. As a result, the judge sentenced the defendant to ten years in prison and one year of probation.Adriana was ab
Early the next morning, hospital, office.Henry Charles, Calvin's private doctor and longtime friend, examined the wound on Calvin's thigh with a dark expression. "Calvin, you can't leave today too. The injury on your thigh needs proper care. If it isn't treated correctly, it'll leave a scar."Calvin shrugged indifferently. "It's on my thigh. Who's going to see it?""Your wife! The one lying on the 14th floor who just out of danger," Henry retorted sharply.Calvin, who had been buttoning his shirt, paused for a moment. His expression hardened. "Stop talking nonsense. We've been divorced for a long time."Henry sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. Their circle of friends and family was well aware of Calvin and Adriana's story, from its beginnings to its bitter end."Is that so? Then why did you risk your life to charge into the explosion site yesterday? I saw the surveillance footage. You screamed like a desperate Romeo losing his Juliet."When the explosion happened, most onlooker
When Adriana slowly opened her eyes, the sharp smell of disinfectant was the first thing that hit her. She was lying face down on a pillow, her back still aching from the wounds caused by shattered glass. Everything around her confirmed that the attack she had experienced was no illusion.Thankfully, by the grace of God, she was still alive."Ah! Ma'am, you're finally awake! You scared me to death!"Mona threw herself at Adriana, who was still hooked up to an IV drip. Her tears and snot smeared across Adriana's hospital gown as she sobbed uncontrollably."The doctors said if you'd been just an inch closer to the car, you might… you might…" Mona choked up, unable to finish her sentence. "I TOLD YOU I SHOULD'VE DRIVEN YOU HOME!"Adriana frowned at the sudden pressure on her weak body. Dizzy from the hug, she barely had the strength to think but instinctively tried to console the clearly frightened Mona."Mona, calm down! You're getting snot and tears all over my clothes!""Oh, I'm so so
Adriana was resting on the bed when suddenly the ward door was kicked open by a force. Adriana turned to look at the door in shock. However, as soon as she did, Calvin's dark face entered her eyes.As soon as the four eyes met, the whole room was filled with the cold air.For a moment, Adriana was in a trance. Did her brain get damaged by the explosion? Or did she start to hallucinate? What kind of bad luck does she have? Why is she seeing Calvin standing there?Adriana cursed inwardly.Calvin’s breathing was a little uneven. So, he stood there with a cold face.Adriana was leaning against the bed. There were a few bruises on her forehead, and her hand was wrapped in a bandage.Calvin remembered that when he carried Adriana to the hospital, her back was bleeding and there were a few glass pieces pierced in it. So, the biggest incision should be on her back.Adriana blinked her eyes! Looking at Calvin's cold face, she was sure that it wasn't a hallucination, which made her feel even mo
“No need, I will do it myself!” Adriana said as she tried to hold her shirt. But her one hand was infused with IV drip and her other hand was injured. So, no matter how hard she tried to hold her shirt, she couldn’t use any strength and failed.Calvin stands there quietly, watching her struggle. He was waiting for her to come back again in frustration. He said coldly, “Don’t try to be so brave?”The nurse looked at him like some crazy fan and said, “Handsome, all girls are like this! They say something else and mean something else! Come and hold her!”Adriana wanted to try again when a black figure surrounded her. Then, she was half embraced by a pair of strong arms.Suddenly the familiar fragrance of mind and rose filled in her nose, bringing back those memories she tried to forget.Adriana’s body stiffened. Her heart was beating so fast that she felt that it would jump out from her chest. The wounds on her back had not started to heal yet. As the thin layer of serum floated on the s
After staying in the hospital for a week, Adriana returned to work. She was busy in her office when Aidan walked in, his face beaming with a broad smile. “Adriana, have you recovered well? Why don’t you rest for a few more days?”Looking at his expression, Adriana smiled kindly. “Aidan, if you have something to say, just say it. You don’t have to beat around the bush.”“As expected… You’re the one who knows me best! I can’t hide anything from you!”He handed Adriana a paper bag and said, “Grand Empire is so generous! Not only do they offer a great salary, but they also provide housing. And not just any housing—it’s in the best residential complex in the whole city!”Adriana opened the paper bag suspiciously. A diamond-shaped key fell out, along with an access card.Written in bold on the card were the words: Green Wick Residential Complex. It was indeed the city’s most prestigious residential area. Even if you had money, buying a property there wasn’t guaranteed. The complex was a hig
The crushing pain in her stomach intensified, and Adriana clenched her fists tightly. Her hands were slick with sweat.“What is it?” she asked, her voice strained.Calvin exhaled a puff of smoke, his demeanor casual. “Even though you won the lawsuit and earned fifty thousand dollars in legal fees, you also got into an accident and nearly lost your life. Don’t you want to know who’s behind it?”“The police are still investigating…” Adriana paused, suddenly suspicious. “Did you investigate me?”“Of course. You’re my legal counselor, so I had to evaluate your business abilities. I didn’t expect you to be a lawyer who lacks basic common sense,” he said, his tone sharp. “I really don’t know how you managed to get your bar license twice.”“I…” Adriana was momentarily at a loss for words.Calvin extinguished his cigarette on the lid of a nearby trash can and said, “Let’s go. I’ll take you to meet someone.”Thinking it was a work-related matter, Adriana didn’t ask too many questions and got i
Cold fronts, as sharp as blades, cut through the thick night, and beneath the moonlight, the man’s eyes were colder than steel. His face was clear and emotionless, revealing neither joy nor anger. Yet, the plummeting temperature around him silently warned that he was in no good mood.Adriana was momentarily stunned. How did Calvin end up here? she thought. Was he one of the guests tonight? No, if the head of Grand Empire had been invited, the news would have spread like wildfire at the law firm. Was it just a coincidence?True, this place was home to many powerful tycoons, and the environment was beautiful. But in the middle of the night, Calvin hardly seemed like someone who would be out for a leisurely stroll. Before she could think further, a firm grip wrapped around her arm. With ease, Calvin pulled her out of Carson’s hold, yanking her back. Yet, it wasn’t just an act of pulling her away—his own bod
At the end of the awards ceremony, Adriana held a delicate crystal trophy in her hands. “Aidan, thank you!”Aidan, looking like an old father marrying off his daughter, was on the verge of tears, his emotions overflowing. “You… you! Why pretend to be clueless when you were so well prepared?”Adriana tilted her head and pouted. “I wanted to surprise you too!”Aidan let out a defeated sigh. “Fine, fine. Whatever you say. You always have an excuse.”Mona’s starry eyes practically sparkled with admiration. “Master, I now officially announce that you and Lawyer Clarke are tied for first place!”Adriana playfully tapped the bridge of Mona’s nose. “Didn’t you say that Mark wasn’t a good person, that he was too calculating?”Mona cupped her small hands around her cheeks, blinking mischievously. “Well… when it comes to his promotion, a
Yes, she could call herself his lover, but in truth, she was nothing more than a convenient, long-term bed companion. She had never truly entered Carson’s heart.Carson had made this painfully clear early on: “If you’re with me, I’ll give you whatever you want. But don’t expect me to be single-minded, and don’t even think about marrying into the Collen family.”Despite this, Jessica wasn’t willing to give up. She believed that with enough time, effort, and deeper feelings, she could eventually win Carson over and become irreplaceable. She had been careful and patient, biding her time and putting in painstaking effort. She thought she was finally close to achieving her goal…Snap!Jessica dropped her wine glass in frustration, her hand trembling uncontrollably.“Adriana’s heart is too deep,” she muttered bitterly. “She acts like she’s above everything, like she doesn’t fight for anything. But in reality, she’s secretly taking it all!”Selena gritted her teeth and cast a sharp glance to
“Miss Clarke, hello again!” Carson greeted her at just the right moment. From the moment he entered the room, his eyes had been drawn to Adriana. Under the soft glow of the lamp, she exuded a natural, effortless beauty—bright, clear, and striking without the need for embellishments. His use of the word again subtly shifted the lively atmosphere into something more tense, almost unsettling.Jessica, already irritated by the earlier exchanges, immediately leaned closer to Carson, holding onto his arm with deliberate possessiveness. “You two know each other?” she asked, her tone laced with suspicion.Adriana, wary of Carson’s potential for mischief, was about to answer when he spoke first. “Yes, we met briefly in the United Kingdom. Miss Clarke left a deep impression—her professor, Johnson, is quite the legend in financial litigation.”Adriana, determined to keep the conversation light, took a step closer to Mona and replied casually, “Lawyer Carson has such a remarkable memory. If you h
Adriana was in the United Kingdom for university when she began following her professor to participate in financial litigation cases. At the time, she wasn’t qualified to take the lawyer’s seat and could only observe the battles unfold in court. Her mentor was a renowned legal scholar from Cornell and an authentic Brit. Though he ultimately won the case, the process was fraught with difficulty, as the opposing lawyer, Carson, was both cunning and resourceful.Carson was a master tactician with ample connections and a flair for theatrics in the courtroom. Like a performance artist, he stirred emotions to gain the jury’s sympathy. If not for the strong evidence in the mentor’s favor, even he might have lost to Carson’s skillful maneuvers. After the case concluded, Carson approached Professor Johnson.“Hello, Professor Johnson. I’ve admired your reputation for quite some time. It’s an honor to finally compete with you on the same field. Your defense was extraordinary. I truly admire it!”
Smiling slightly, Adriana said, “Is there something wrong?”She distanced herself from the drama in the office—if the fight didn’t concern her, she wouldn’t get involved. With matters unrelated to her, she chose indifference; when they did involve her, she handled them without argument. She believed in keeping her own integrity intact, knowing that saying less was often more effective. But not speaking didn’t mean she was unaware.Selena, known as “Jessica’s best friend,” approached her with an air of faux friendliness that felt more like a veiled provocation.“Tonight, Lawyer Clarke is the main character. I hear the reunion is just a pretense—the main event is presenting you with an award. Didn’t you earn half a million dollars for winning the Grand Empire lawsuit last time? That’s the biggest payout our firm has ever seen.”The sour tone in Selena’s voice barely masked her envy. Adriana replied calmly, “Then I must thank Lawyer Jessica for organizing such a grand occasion. I’m truly
Adriana was like his discarded, shoddy shoes—once thrown away, and now, just a passerby. So why was he so drawn to her again? Why did it hurt so much? Was he crazy?Just then, Calvin’s phone rang. He picked it up with a dark expression. “Speak!”On the other end, Henry, sounding cheerful as always, said, “Whoa, why so fiery? I didn’t provoke you. Still brooding over that thing from this morning?”“Cut the crap and bring a medical kit over here,” Calvin snapped.Henry’s voice shot up in mock alarm. “What? Self-harm? Did you cut your wrist?”“If you keep talking nonsense, believe it or not, I’ll come over and deal with you myself.”Henry wisely decided to stop teasing but couldn’t suppress a chuckle. “Alright, alright. Where are you? At home?”“Building eight, top floor!”Henry, always eager for excitement, arrived in no time, carrying a medical kit, a few bottles of beer, and some snacks. It was clear he wasn’t just here to help but also to enjoy the drama. As soon as he stepped in, he
After living there for only a month and gradually adding things one after another, Adriana now found herself leaving with just a suitcase and two punching bags stuffed to the brim. The light winds of parting tugged at her heart. “Let’s go,” she said calmly.Aidan felt sorry for her. “What’s wrong with the house? The type, the floor, the decoration—it didn’t cost two or three billion a month, right? Calvin’s been mooching off you for years. If there’s free wool to grab, why not grab it?”Adriana patted him on the shoulder, her voice steady. “Aidan, there’s no such thing as a free lunch.”Compared to the spacious luxury of the Green Wick apartment, the one-bedroom house seemed extraordinarily cramped and narrow. Aidan’s heart ached for her, and he couldn’t hold back his words. “Didn’t you take over Calvin’s case? Technically, you’re still his party B, aren’t you? Why move out?”Adriana carefully arranged her personal belongings and gestured for Aidan to help her set the quilt cover. The
"From whom?" Adriana asked."There’s a little card on it, but it doesn’t have a name or any contact information. So, Lawyer Clarke, see for yourself!"The receptionist's gossipy eyes could have written to the sixteenth episode of her Korean drama, but there wasn’t the faintest ripple in Adriana’s heart. The large bouquet contained roughly ninety-nine flowers—a standard number meant to convey a particular meaning. Yet it didn’t meet any of Adriana’s expectations. The card's generic stationery, provided by the florist, had only one line written on it: “The weather is nice.”Just four words.Outside the window, the sunlight spilled like shattered silver, illuminating the glossy leaves of the sycamore tree. The turquoise-blue sky was dotted with a few white clouds. It wasn’t yet summer, just the twilight of the spring season, with the daylight lingering sweetly. It really was, as the card said, a nice day.Adriana thought for a while, trying to figure out who could have sent the flowers.
