Eleven years ago, the Courtney family business had gone bankrupt. On their way back to deal with the aftermath, Amanda’s parents had been killed in a tragic car accident, leaving her, at 17, with no one to turn to. Grief-stricken and lost, Amanda had no choice but to crash an elite party, desperately seeking help from her parents’ old business partners.
But the only responses she received were cold rejections, mocking laughter, or lecherous gazes that lingered far too long on her body. Just when all hope seemed lost, Riley, a handsome and wealthy man drawing everyone’s attention, had stepped in to save her.
It was the first kindness Amanda had felt since her world had fallen apart. She began to believe that Riley Griffin, the man who stood at the top of the world, could be her lifeline, that he was a kind and gentle soul.
From that moment on, wherever Riley appeared, Amanda’s eyes would follow. She found herself drawn to him, captivated by his presence. When he smiled, she felt as though the distance between them shrank. When he was angry, she's desperate to find out what's gotten him down. She noticed how impeccably he dressed, always in sharp, tailored suits. Every move Riley made tugged at Amanda’s heart.
It didn’t take long for Amanda to realize she was hopelessly in love with him. And falling for Riley—well, that was the sweetest kind of happiness Amanda had ever known.
After graduating from college, Amanda joined Griffin Corporation, hoping to stay close to him. Besides, the Griffin Group was a company everyone dreamed of working for. Amanda worked hard—she had always been a top student and had accumulated plenty of experience during her university years. Before long, she became Riley’s most trusted chief secretary.
Amanda was going to hide her love for the simple reason that there's a huge gap in their status and there are too many excellent girls around him. But one night, after they both smashed, things changed. They ended up in bed together.
The next morning, looking at Riley’s handsome face, Amanda recalled the rumors about him needing a wife and, on impulse, asked, “If you need someone to marry… I could be that person.”
To her surprise and delight, Riley had agreed, without much hesitation at all.
She had worked at Griffin Corporation for five years and had been married to Riley for three.
Amanda once believed that Riley must be love her. After all, he had plenty of choices, and he didn’t have to marry a woman he hated. But that single phone call from Faye Aiken takes all the fond memories away. Amanda feels like she's just a clown and everything she does is for pleasing them.
Now that Riley has left, there’s no reason for her to stay in this empty villa.
Amanda usually lives in an apartment near her office, a place which is small but cozy, a place quite different from this large but empty villa. Every time she comes here alone, a profound sadness will creep into her heart. The villa is unadorned, and the scenery outside is nothing special—just the same view she can find anywhere. Amanda cannot feel a sense of belonging here; deep down, she didn’t believe this is her home.
Just as she is about to stand up, an excruciating pain rips through her body, causing her to collapse onto the floor.
At that moment, warm blood starts to trickle down her legs, staining the pristine white wool carpet beneath her. The sight is horrifying.
Amanda gasps in terror.
She tries to get up, but every small movement sends waves of searing pain through her body. Gritting her teeth, she reaches for her phone on the table, her voice trembling as she speaks.“Riley, I’m sick. Could you take me to the hospital?”
“Amanda, stop being unreasonable,” Riley interrupts her roughly. The background is so noisy that it’s really hard for Amanda to hear Riley’s voice. Absolutely, Riley’s in the same boat. He doesn’t even seem to hear what she has said.
Amanda’s body is drenched in cold sweat as the blood continued to flow. Her emotions, hold tightly in check until now, finally break free, and she cannot help but sob.
“Riley, I kid you not, and I’m bleeding heavily. Please, please come get me!”
“You were fine when I left, and now, all of a sudden, you’re having issues? Amanda, do you even think twice before you lie?” Riley gives Amanda the cold shoulder and doesn't seem to care about her at all. His words are like a slap in her face.
The word “lie” is like a sharp knife, stabbing Amanda right in the heart. But she doesn’t have the strength to argue. Tears streams down her face as she chokes out one final plea.
“I’m not trying to deceive you… I’m really bleeding a lot. If you don’t come soon, I’m afraid I might…”
There’s a brief pause, a moment of hesitation on the other end of the line. But it’s fleeting.
“Stay—”
“Mr. Griffin, Miss Aiken has regained consciousness!”
A stranger’s voice comes through the phone, and without a second thought, Riley hangs up. The cold, repetitive beeping of the disconnected call is like a death knell to Amanda. She can feel her consciousness slipping away, the pain drowning out everything else, as she descends into darkness.
When Amanda wakes up, it’s already the next afternoon. She is lying in a hospital bed, alone. The sterile white walls of the hospital room only added to the overwhelming sense of isolation and despair. She can hardly tell where it is. It has the same white walls as in the villa, and the same quiet.“Mrs Griffin, are you awake?”Riley’s butler enters the room, holding a medical report, and after seeing her awake, he lets out a sigh of relief.“You don’t know how dangerous it was last night. If we hadn’t gone to the villa to check on you and found you unconscious, I can’t imagine what would’ve happened.”“Thank you,” Amanda whispers, her voice barely audible. Her face is still pale, drains of all color. The butler smiles politely and hands her a slip of paper.“On the way to the hospital, our car broke down. Fortunately, a kind gentleman offered to help and even paid for your medical expenses. This is his contact information. Also…”The butler hesitates for a moment before handing her t
Meanwhile, in the VIP room of the same hospital, a few childhood friends of Riley Griffin and Faye Aiken are gathered. Riley tosses his phone onto the table in frustration. He cannot get a hold of Amanda.Faye’s spooked by the sound, and her body trembles slightly as her eyes filled with tears.“Riley, I’m so sorry. I know I’m always troubling you because of my terrible physical condition, but yesterday was unbearable… It felt like I was reliving the day of the air crash.”A few years ago, his mother, Faye, and her mother took his private jet for an overseas vacation. Tragically, there was a crash, and their mother had gone to heaven. Faye made a full recovery, but she was left with severe PTSD.Even though it was unpredictable, it happened on his plane. Faye was the only one who survived, and he swelled with guilt and sympathetic. He even promised Faye’s father he’d treat her like his little sister. So for all these years, no matter when she calls, he’s always there for her.But Rile
Life is unforeseeable, but Amanda never expects that the next time she bumps into Riley will be on the day she is discharged from the hospital.Amanda hates hospitals; they always remind her of her parents’ passing. Everything here feels like a lingering nightmare, pressing down on her until she can barely breathe. And just then, she sees the last two people she wants to see.Riley is there, still attractive and sturdy, carrying a vulnerable but lovely woman bodily up the stairs. Together, they look perfect—a picture of elegance and charm. People will smile when they see it, except Amanda. Because her husband, Riley, is here to accompany another woman as his own wife lies recovering in a hospital bed.Amanda notices how Riley, usually all strides and long legs, slows down to match Faye’s dainty pace. His gaze softened in a way Amanda has never seen.It hit Amanda that the first time she wore stiletto heels. At that time, she followed Riley to attend a quarterly business review. She’d
Amanda returns to the villa. Without resting, she begins packing her things. She didn’t bring much when she first moved in three years ago, and even though she has a habit of buying small items, she’s never displayed them—Riley doesn’t like clutter, after all.By the time she’s done, all she has are her clothes, a few keepsakes only she cares about, and some small personal items she’d kept carefully tucked away. While sorting through everything, she finds a few boxes of incense. The boxes are dusty, faded from the sun, and barely carry any scent anymore.Seeing them, Amanda remembers a small, silly thing she once did for Riley. After that banquet, Amanda started paying close attention to Riley. Once she became his secretary, she learned that Riley struggled with sleep, often waking in the middle of the night. Determined to help, she searched for ways to improve his rest. One day, a specialist suggested trying aromatherapy, so Amanda took it to heart. She went out of her way to lear
Amanda, however, has seen the call. Even though Riley’s number hadn’t been saved under his name, it’s one she’d long memorized by heart. Actually, she hasn’t ignored him on purpose.Years after her parents passed, she gets a phone call out of blue telling her someone is waiting at her parents’ gravestone with something to discuss. Amanda is puzzled; her parents’ old friends has lost contact years ago, and she is the only one who regularly visits. But given that it involves her parents, Amanda doesn’t hesitate. She turns the car around and makes her way to the cemetery.Preoccupied with thoughts, she glances at her phone, deciding to let the call go unanswered—she doesn’t want her mood disrupted by whatever Riley might say.Arriving at the cemetery, Amanda’s breath catches as she spots a familiar figure. It’s Faye Aiken. She’s dressed in an expensive, custom-tailored outfit, smug and imperious, completely different from the frail girl who had clung to Riley in the hospital. So, she e
Suddenly, An episode’s replayed in Amanda’s mind. That was an early morning when she spontaneously decided to watch the sunrise. She drove Kara and Grace to the coast.Dawn’s light cast a shimmering path across the calm ocean, stretching from the shore to the horizon. The amber-like sunlight warmed every inch of her skin, making Amanda look like a goddess.Grace smiled like a cat in cream and said to Amanda, “Do you know when I first saw you?”“The first time I saw you was when I randomly attended a debate. You were the third speaker on the affirmative side, and I became totally hooked on you.” Grace lost herself in her own thoughts.“You spoke with such confidence and conviction; your arguments were sharp and precise. I always thought you looked your most beautiful when you were doing something you loved. Even though we were indoors back then, it felt like sunlight was shining down on you.”Grace and Kara both gazed at Amanda, making her turn away. She seemed bashful and awkward.Gr
Riley is in the golf course, together with Rex and Shawn.“These days are so busy. We finally get a chance to go out, and you’re not even saying a word.”“I did say something.”“You don’t seem to be in a good mood.”“I’m fine.”“Take a look in the mirror. You’ve been wearing that same expression all day. You call it a good mood?”“……”Riley grips his golf club with both hands, bending slightly forward, eyes focused on the ball. He raises the club to shoulder height, twists his torso, and swings forward.Eagle!Rex draws a long sigh. “Riley! Can’t you go easy on us? We’re friends here, you don’t have to be so ruthless.”Riley surveys him coldly, clearly irritated. “I don’t waste time on pointless things, and I have no interest in losing to you.”Rex sha
As Riley broods, Rex speaks up again. “Riley, seriously, just call Amanda over. Give her a raise or something. Or I’ll pay; I won’t let her come for free.”Rex doesn’t notice that Riley’s been a bit depressed and keeps speaking, “By the way, I never understood why you made her your secretary. She’s beautiful, capable, and it’s obvious to anyone that she likes you. You’re married now. Can’t you put her out of her misery? There are plenty of guys at the company who want to date her, and she turns them all down, saying she’s already married. How could she really be married? If she was, would she still show her feelings for you so openly?”Rex shakes his head dramatically.“You broke their hearts! Amanda falls in love with you, Faye is enchanted by you, but you’re already married. They must be devastated!”Riley freezes, for once at a loss for words. He’s usu
