"Y-Yes, I- I do," Evelyn stuttered, unable to take her eyes off him. This… surely wasn't who she was expecting.
From his hair to his suit, tie, shoes and wristwatch, her husband didn't look like the pauper that everyone had portrayed him to be. He looked… well fed, put together and organised.
What the hell was going on?
"By the power vested in me, you may now kiss the bride," the priest continued, oblivious to Evelyn's inner conflict.
Wait! K-Kiss-
"I'm sure we have plenty of time to do that once we get home, don't you agree?" Lucas interrupted her thoughts, flashing her a flirty smile that heated up her cheeks.
Last night was still burned in her memory that she blushed silly, unable to look him confidently in the eye for too long.
Evelyn nodded stiffly and turned to the Priest who smiled and had no problems with it.
"Shall we?" Lucas offered his hand and she stared at it for a little while before sliding hers in. His hold was firm and tender than for a moment, Evelyn forgot she was pissed about the arranged marriage and once kicked against it.
Well if they had told her sooner he was this good looking and the same man who--
"E-Excuse me," Olivia hurried towards them as Lucas led his new bride down , careful not to hurry her too much, her heels looked quite high.
"H-Hi, I'm Oli-"
Lucas, with his head held high, walked past her like she was glass without as much sparing her a glance.
Evelyn heaved a sigh of relief. That was close. If Olivia had mentioned her name, that would have caused a lot of problems. Did she forget that she married Lucas bearing Olivia's name?
Taking her eyes of a shocked and embarrassed Olivia, Evelyn looked up to her husband. She scanned him from the fair nape of his neck to his wide shoulders, lean muscle and finely sculpted back.
Her head flashed with images of last night as she remembered how her nails dug into his back, her soft moans of pleasure and his tenderness all through the night.
Thinking about it only turned her face red like a freshly ripened tomato.
"H-How dare him!" Olivia stomped her feet as she watched Lucas and Evelyn exit the hall still holding hands like real couples. She had never been so embarrassed and ignored in all her life.
"She's fucking wearing my dress and he couldn't even say 'thank you'," she scowled, biting hard on her bottom lip in annoyance. She was squeezing her fist by her side as her blood boiled.
When her eyes landed on her mother, she finally erupted, "This is all your fault!" she screamed, causing Diana to jerk in fright. "If only you had investigated properly! How can I fucking lost to that bitch?" she screamed with tears in her eyes.
"You said he was ugly and short and smelly and poor-"
"Olivia!" Diana yelled. "Calm down-"
"Don't tell me to calm down!" she yelled back. "If he wasn't all that and I knew, why the heck do you think I'll give him to someone else?"
Diana rolled her eyes, palming her head as she suddenly developed a pounding headache. Had she been fooled by the Graham's all along? How could she have missed such an opportunity? But even the media carried the news that Lucas was a nobody in the family.
He couldn't possibly be the heir of Graham's fortune. She didn’t want to accept that she had been fooled. Once again, she would trust the Graham's on this one.
"Ignore it, Olivia. You're young and still have lots of years ahead of you. Good looks are not all that's needed in a man," she scoffed. "What's important is money and wellbeing. Lucas doesn't have shit to his name. Is that what you want?"
"B-But-"
"What you see today could just be his family's scrap," she sounded so sure and convinced that Olivia found herself relaxing at the thought of it. "Everything here was Graham's family arrangement. They've done their part, now it's time for Lucas and Evelyn to carry on. Let's see how that goes, hmm?"
Maybe it was her mother's calming voice or the smile on her lips but Olivia felt relieved. She wasn't missing out on anything.
Yes, in the end, she would only get the best and brag about it.

Evelyn and Lucas walked out in total silence. He still held her hand like a pampered egg.
"You're staring," he smirked and her heart skipped a nervous beat.
"S-Sorry," she said and looked away only to notice they were approaching a black shiny car. Her jaw dropped in surprise when he led her to it and pulled the door open.
It looked brand new and expensive too. What kind of fantasy was this?
Didn't they say he was poor? Perhaps she was thinking too little of him but… no poor man should be able to afford this kind of ride.
Sensing his wife's hesitation with the concerned and questioning look on her face, Lucas decided to step in.
"It's rented. Be careful not to get it dirty. It'll cost so much."
"O-Oh, r-right. Sorry," carefully, she climbed in and settled down on the seats, feeling rather uncomfortable. She couldn't begin to imagine the cost of repair or even cleaning.
She had no money to her name and her husband wasn't well off either. It would be stupid of her to be a burden on the first day.
Lucas let go of her and shut the door before turning round to the other side of the car to get in. Once he was all settled in, the car drove off.
The silence was a bit too heavy for her as it suddenly dawned on her that she had a one night stand with her husband last night.
Squeezing her fist over her thighs, Evelyn lowered her head and shut her eyes hoping the car seats would open up and swallow her.
Besides the blush on her face, she knew she had to address it or have her husband think she was nothing more than a prostitute.
Shit! Why was her luck so bad at every point in life?
Summoning the courage, she lifted her head and turned to him, "You see-"
"I don't care what you do," Lucas interrupted her with a sigh as he kept his face straight and his voice hard as steel.
Where was the man who smirked and held her so tenderly just a few minutes ago?
"Our marriage is a contract and it doesn't matter if you were a prostitute. What matters now is that you're my wife and you simply cannot return to that life. Have a little respect and dignity now that I'm your husband."
"Wh-What?" Her jaw dropped in shock, unable to process what she had just heard. "That's not what happened-"
"I clearly remember you throwing yourself at me last night and begging to be fucked," he turned his eyes to her and she was almost burned by the coldness in them. "If you've forgotten, did you simply have too many customers that night-"
Her nose flared in anger and her hands trembled. She was lifting her hand to smack him across the face when he caught her wrist in the blink of an eye.
His eyes only glared harder, sending a chill down her spine with a warning behind them.
"It's too early to be violent, don't you think, Olivia? Unfortunately for you, I wont tolerate domestic violence-"
Evelyn jerked out of his grip, returning his glare with one of her own.
"Smart choice. Let's hope you remember my warning."
Did he get switched before he got into the car? This wasn't the same man she met at the altar nor was it the same one who made love to her last night.
Who was this person and how- just how could anyone emit such cold aura?
The air grew thick and heavy as neither of them said a word to each other. The drive to wherever they were going was a long one and by the time the car slowed down, Evelyn finally looked out the window to observe her new environment.
The first thing she noticed was the old house they pulled over at. The environment was nothing like the one she knew all her life nor grew up in.
This place felt like a remote area and the house looked haunted. The lawn looked like it hadn't been touched for months, the door was dusty and she could bet her life savings-- to which she had none-- that it would creak like an old rusty thing.
"What is this place?" She couldn’t help but whisper. Her home back at William's mansion was like a god next to this trash.
If her father knew this was where she was living now-- wait, he didn't care. He wouldn't care at all. The man didn’t even bother to attend her own wedding even if it wasn't a wedding of love!
"You can get down now," Lucas said. " I still have something to attend to."
Turning to him with wide eyes, she stared at the nonchalant husband, "You're leaving me here? All by myself?" he didn't reply nor spare her a glance and Evelyn took that as her cue to get off.
She stepped down from the car brimming with anger but with the car being so expensive, she couldn’t even vent by slamming the door. What if she broke something in the process and her husband from hell asked her to pay for it?
He drove off immediately, leaving her in the dust.
She sneezed a few times, glaring as the car soon went out of sight. She turned to her new home and heaved a deep sigh, preparing herself for the worst.
"They did say they kicked him out," she shrugged, trying to be strong. She made her way to the door and alas! It really did creak when she pushed it open.
The dust was thick inside and the floors dirty and most of the tiles were broken. The chairs were dusty, the staircase needed renovation-- in fact the whole house needed help!
Her shoulders slumped in a defeated sigh as she grabbed the necessary tools for cleaning. Soon, she began to wonder if Lucas meant for her to clean the place herself.
She got to work without stopping for a moment to rest and by the time she was done, it was evening. Her arms and legs throbbed like they would fall off at any minute and the room was chilly as there was no heater.
She cleaned the chairs and arranged the room but the lawn was reserved for another day. After a cold shower that almost had her freezing to death, Evelyn stayed in the living room, waiting for Lucas' return.
She counted the minutes and seconds as time dragged on.
It was 10p.m when she finally rubbed her eyes and decided to give up waiting for him. She climbed the stairs to her bedroom to sleep alone in her cold bed on her wedding night.
At least, the house reminded her of Lucas. Cold.
How could he leave his bride all alone on their wedding night? Just like him, she also didn't want the marriage but they could at least make it work. Why was he proving difficult?
Tears gathered in her eyes as she laid under the sheets, left unattended to like an object. She clenched hard on her jaw to stop her tears from flowing but it proved impossible when her thoughts flashed to her mother.
"I know you'll find love in this life, Evelyn. Someone who will cherish your kind heart and value you for the rest of your life," she would always say with that kind smile on her face.
Who knew that when Mother made such fine promises, her ill fate had other plans? Nothing had ever gone fine in her life. Not one thing.
Her heart broke and ached so bad that she laid curled up in bed and cried her eyes out.
Lucas never returned home that night, nor the next morning or even the next day.Evelyn finally gave up waiting after the fifth day. She was filled with so much rage but what could she do? She couldn't hold a grudge against a man who probably forgot about her existence. She stared at the ring on her finger, the small silver felt heavy and cold. Her marriage felt like a prison. Why did she even expect an arranged marriage to run smoothly? They were two strangers bound by a ring after all.If only she didn’t have to dance to her stepmother's tune. She could still recall Lucas's cold and glaring eyes like he harboured a secret grudge against her.Evelyn suddenly jumped to her feet. She had completely forgotten about Peter. How could she--Fuck! He must be so lonely all by himself. Before, she used to be so busy but still managed to take out the time to care for him. What was she expecting anyways? That Lucas would support her in Peter's treatment? How delusional!"Stupid, stupid," Evelyn
Evelyn shuddered at his stern voice and turned to see her husband standing behind her with a glare in his eyes directed at her father. He was the last person she expected to be here. How did he even know where to find her?Haven't seen him in days, he looked much more handsome than the last time she saw him. It suddenly felt like all the days she waited felt like nothing seeing him now.How did her anger dissipate just by his presence?“Let go of me!” Her father yelled, trying to pull his hand away but it felt like the man was made of steel. He didn't budge no matter how hard he tried. He readied his fist and swung at him but Lucas caught his hand in the air, his eyes going even darker-“Don't fucking put your hands on my husband, you begger!” It was Diana's turn to yell now as she sprung into action, pushing Lucas off and grabbing into her husband.“You're dirtying his clothes. Just take your wretched wife and leave!”Olivia chuckled as she eyed Lucas' outfit from head to toe. Since
The party happened that evening and as Evelyn stepped into the hall with her arm locked in her husband's arm, her jaw dropped as she took in the scene. It felt like she had just stepped into a fairytale live action. The hall was decorated with fabrics that screamed extravagance at first glance. The tables, covered in rich velvet cloths with sparkly chandeliers hanging over their heads. The music was soft in the background, it was a rich melody that soothed the atmosphere. The air smelled of fresh flowers and champagne and she could hear the clicking of glass and the mumblings of conversations. The guests weren't left out in the event, they too had come prepared in their finest clothes and their necks and hands bedecked with fine pearls and jewelries.Everyone looked so good that for a moment, Evelyn felt a little self conscious. There was nothing special about her dress but she tried to lift her head and brush it off.She couldn't hold it against herself for not having money. If had e
The crowd was in shock and no one uttered a word. They waited for the joke to be over and waited for their eyes to perhaps recognize the gift but they were all looking at the same thing.A stone!Like a bomb going off without warning, that was how their laughter erupted. They held their belly with their mouths gaping open as they laughed, making mockery of the prodigal son who spoke like a king about a gift but made a fool out of himself.Evelyn tightened her hold on Lucas's arm. Just what had he done? How could he have given his father a stone? Was this just to make a mockery of him or what? But Lucas didn't seem fazed at all. If anything, he looked like he hadn't done anything wrong. He still wore his confidence so strongly that it made Evelyn relax. She didn't know how or why but she felt a deep trust somehow for her husband. It didn't matter if this was his plan or not. She was his wife and she would stand by him, no matter what.Mr. Graham signalled to one of the guards and they
'A thousand bucks,' Evelyn thought. He really got it for a thousand bucks? She wondered but couldn't bring herself to doubt Lucas. He seemed like he knew the worth of the stone and presented it to his father. Why didn't he just keep it for himself? He could live a much better life with a hundred million and even start something good. Now they walked out in absolute silence and she opened her mouth to speak-"Lucas?"The smooth sultry voice came from behind and Evelyn clamped her mouth shut. Who would call out to her husband so seductively? They both turned to the woman and Evelyn's brows jerked up in surprise as she took in the hot model standing before her.She had a banging body in that red thigh high slit dress. Her blonde hair was wavy and falling over to one side of her shoulder. Her gaze was filled with so much grace and ease that at first glance one could tell she was in a higher class in society. The woman's face eased softly and her cheeks flushed as she looked away briefly,
Lucas dropped her home that night but to her dismay, he drove off, leaving her all to herself again. She didn't know what she was expecting from him but watching him drive away made her chest ache.Evelyn pushed herself for the next week. Instead of wallowing in her misery and loneliness, she went out looking for a job, submitting her application to top companies with her fingers crossed. It had been exactly a week since she did that and was yet to receive any feedback. How hard was it these days for a computer engineer to secure a job?It was the start of a new week and Evelyn was on the verge of giving up hope. She could try again or find something small to do but when she opened her email, there was a new message. Her eyes bulged and she almost fell off the chair. An email from CoreLink Group requesting an interview! If this was a dream, Evelyn would never open her eyes again!CoreLink Group was a bigshot! In fact, after its establishment some years back, the company had surpassed
The last strength she thought she would have preserved for more job interviews, escaped her. Evelyn couldn't stop staring at the spot where she had seen Lucas with that woman. Her head played the scene over and over and she couldn't get it out.Evelyn went about the day to different companies for interviews but she did so with a heavy heart. The pit in her stomach and the sinking feeling in her chest suddenly came crashing to her. Had she been somewhat expectant of this arranged marriage? When did she place a little hope and faith in it to feel this overwhelming pull of disappointment?Throughout the ride back home, her thoughts were all over the place.Evelyn couldn't think straight and everything felt heavy. She hated it. She hated how she felt about this. She knew Lucas didn't love her and heck- she didn't love him too. They were just a contract couple. She knew this yet why was she stuck in this feeling?Maybe somewhere deep down, she had hoped to create a real family out of this.
Evelyn sighed heavily as she stepped out of yet another company. After a successful interview, she realised the pay wasn't all that. Why was it so difficult to get a high paying job around here? She just wasn't satisfied with the pay they offered."Why can't every company just be CoreLink?" she grunted as she walked down the street under the scorching sun.Dehydrated and tired as she was, she couldn't return home without at least landing one.It wasn't that the pay wasn't enough for a comfortable life, heck, if she wanted to live recklessly, she could as well take it but she had responsibilities so that alone had its own fair amount in the bills. If she was going to pay Peter's bills and treat his illness more seriously then the only well paying job was CoreLink Company. But since she failed the interview, she had to go about searching for an alternative with a closely related pay but so far, she would have to work two jobs at this point to match that pay.Damn! Why was everything so
“ My father has always been a powerful man and my mother? Well, she was just a woman who had nothing but love for her only son,” he chuckled with a fondness that made Evelyn's heart sink.Despite the fact that he was speaking before millions of people - with the press capturing his every word– Evelyn knew who he was really talking to.Details of his past that she never thought he would visit were being told here and now and all for her.“ Death stole her from me. My father remarried. Our relationship turned sour, step siblings were born, and well… attention was divided. I was cut off from the family business and, well, decided to start my own company.”“Away from my father's name, I took on my mother's– a sign that her blessings will continue to be with me. I got married - a contracted marriage and… man!” He sighed heavily.“ The loveliest woman I've ever come across. A heart of gold, a smile full of warmth that actually warmed up this heart I used to think had turned into stone.”The
“ Goodness me!” Morticia exclaimed as she walked into the hall with her husband, Mr. Graham by her side as well as her children. It wasn't just the gold floors or the bright fancy chandelier of the mansion, the decorations looked out of this world.“ I've never seen anything like it!” Liam, the second son of Graham had his jaw hanging loose.Morticia couldn't tell her son to control himself this time around because she too couldn't stop gawking at the place. The other guests were dumbfounded too as everyone tried to be on their best behaviour. The Graham's said their greetings to some distinguished guests and soon hurled to one side, ogling the place.“ When is this going to start?” Mr. Graham groans. “It's been over an hour now.”The place was packed with guests and a few people from the press waiting to capture the event and the face behind the successful company.“ Maybe everyone's not here yet,” Morticia shrugged but who wouldn't come early for an event like this?Mr. Graham scoff
TWO WEEKS LATERShe mixed the floor in the pan and poured the eggs, stirring it with a small smile on her face as she hummed to a song she couldn't even remember.Evelyn lifted her head when she heard footsteps rushing to her and she smiled when Peter rushed in holding a drawing book.“Look, I drew it!” he cheered, all excited and proud of himself. It was supposed to be a chicken… well if you looked at it somehow, it could be a chicken. Nevertheless, she rubbed his head and smiled at him.“You did good. You should draw more often,” she encouraged. It was a different feeling seeing him in normal clothes and outside the hospital. Her joy knew no bounds and it filled her heart. He grinned, “Yes, yes, I wanna be an artist. I'll draw something else. What are you making?”She turned to the dough and shrugged, “I'm craving doughnuts.”He almost narrowed his eyes, “ You've been having lots of cravings these days. I didn't know you were a foodie.”,She scowled and scoffed.“Add some for me,” h
"When last did we share a drink?" Andrew wondered as he looked to the other two were sprawled on the booth in the private room. There were over ten drinks on the table and neither of them seemed like they wanted to stop any time soon.Eric owned the place so he could very well pass the night and he wouldn't mind if they did too but Lucas? He was fucking married."It's past 10p.m. Why are you here again?" He asked Lucas who narrowed his eyes at him.Lucas didn't know what to say to that. He was confused and didn't know what to think. So last night he texted Evelyn that he would be working overtime which was true because he had some files to look at. He got home early by 3a.m in the morning and he joined her in bed after a shower. They kissed and they even had sex.The next morning, he woke up alone in bed which was normal and alright. When he got to work, his assistant informed him that Evelyn had taken a sick leave.According to him, she got to work, felt sick and went back home." We
"Here's a full report on how our stocks dropped my 3%"Mr. Williams sighed as he rubbed his temples. His head was throbbing and he could use a break right about now. It was already 7p.m but he had to stay at the company and have this meeting with his staff. There was a commotion outside and everyone turned their eyes to the door. A woman barged into the meeting and when she walked forward, Mr. Williams was sitting upright."Evelyn?" He asked in shock. What was she doing here?"What is the meaning of this-""Is it true?" She barked, ignoring the fact that this was a company. She was seething with so much anger and the look in her eyes was fierce and terrifying."Don't be such a mad woman, Evelyn. Whatever it is, we can discuss it at home-""I asked if it's fucking true! What happened to my mother, is it fucking true!" She screamed at the top of her voice, ignoring the presence of everyone else. The hall was silent as everyone waited for the CEO to speak. They were dumbfounded by the sh
ONE WEEK LATEREvelyn grabbed her bags from her desk once it was time to leave the office. She rolled her shoulders as she walked down the road and stopped by a coffeeshop to get some pastries. For the last week, her life had been full of ups and downs, from one drama to the other.“Thank you, come again!” the attendant said with glee and she smiled back politely. She sipped from her hot tea as she walked down the road in the cold with a small bag of pastries in her other hand. She was in no rush to go home. Her first stop was the hospital. She needed to visit Peter as she had been doing every morning and evening before and after work.He was always eager for her visit. She should hail down a cab but for some reasons, she felt like walking. A long stroll to ease her mind from all the chaos she had gone through these past few weeks.Diana was still in jail, no chance of getting out. From what she heard from the warder, she was going through a lot. Her cell mate was a big bully.Evelyn
"Insanity?" Evelyn scoffed, refusing to believe her ears. "They are pleading insanity? Oh no way! She wasn't insane when she did that! She was fine and in her fucking right mind!"Olivia's lawyer thought it was best to say his client was mentally unstable and Evelyn knew what that meant. She would escape jail time if he managed to convince the judge."I've known Olivia for years and I can tell you that she's never been to a psychiatrist all her life. You have to believe me, Lucas." She pleaded, feeling frustrated already. She paced the floors of the courthouse, chewing nervously at her nails. "She's not mad! She can't get away with this so easily.""Calm down, Evelyn. I'm sure there's a way to go about this," Lucas hoped yet he sounded so sure, Evelyn almost started to relax. Why did it seem like he had everything figured out?She didn't want Olivia escaping jail. That was totally unfair.Even after all the evidence they brought up on her kidnapping Peter, they were going to rule her
It didn't take long before Evelyn tracked down Olivia's car by tapping into the camera's on the street she drove through. Her hands moved so fast the same way her heart pounded. She couldn't be even a second slow. The pressure was choking her but she managed to remain calm.Lucas noticed the pressure she had around her and he clenched his fist, wishing he could have handled this with his connections but she was faster, of course and more skilled.“We should leave now,” Evelyn announced. “They are headed for a dead end. If we leave now, we can leave before anything happens.” She gulped, already thinking of the worst. The policemen dashed out with Evelyn and Lucas behind them. They got into their separate cars and drove down to the address Evelyn had given. The place was an old warehouse at the outskirts of town. It was dark and spooky. Evelyn could already imagine how terrified Peter would be in the arms of that maniac.“We have the place surrounded. You two stay here and don't move a
Evelyn dropped the groceries on the table, humming in delight as she moved back and forth in the kitchen. She was enjoying her leave, thinking of her bosses generosity, the trial and pretty much everything that had happened these past few days.Peter was doing well. She could see it in the way he moved and how jovial he was. Things were finally starting to fall into place. She glanced at the clock and figured it would still be another two hours before Lucas got off work. She could make it just in time by cooking something good-She heard a car pull into the driveway and she froze. She quickly wiped her hands when she heard the car door shut and as she stepped into the living room, Lucas was opening the door. His face was in a big smile when he held her gaze."Hello you," he said, making her heart take a flip with butterflies in her belly as he approached her with a bottle of wine in his hands."Uhm… hey," she responded in a daze. He pulled her into a hug, kissing her on the cheek."Wh
