Mike's gaze darted around the airport. Everything looked different from what he had known; well, it was bound to be different after fifteen years. He stood still to take a deep breath of motherland. Steve stood beside him and chuckled, "It's good to be home."
Mike's response was a nod and a slow pat on his back. He moved to where people were gathered waiting for arrivals. He tried to see if there was a familiar face or if his name was on anyone's board. After glancing from right to left then left to right back. There was none. Steve must have sensed it or he just had the same expectation as him. "Did you tell anyone we are coming in today?"It was a rhetorical question. He was there when he called his mother after booking the flight, they know his arrival time, yet, they didn't see it fit to send just a cab man to pick him up. It was one of the reasons they had kept him unknown to social media. So, they could maltreat him without any newspaper having an idea of what was going on."Let's just hail a cab." He dragged his luggage outside, while Steve followed behind murmuring. "Did you not tell anyone that you were coming?"Unlike him, Steve's family worshipped him. If they had an idea he was coming, Mike could bet that they would have filled the airport with their noises. He had no idea which one he wanted most; the silence that filled him, leaving him enough time to think or the noise they would have created to distract him from thinking of unnecessary things. Anyways, he was stuck with the silence that he preferred so much. Steve hailed a cab and told him their destination. The cab man looked them from head to toe thinking how they were associated with the Afonso's. "Are you going or not?" Steve asked annoyed by the unnecessary delay. Mike stood there quietly, he was used to getting judged and checked out whenever people knew he was associated with the Afonso's."Come in." The cab man helped them with their luggage and drove off. Mike was silent; he wondered how his father was going to react to seeing him back. Would he be happy? Or was he going to act in his usual indifferent manner?"I can't wait to see your sister." Steve's voice distressed him from his thoughts. "She must be very beautiful now. She won't be the young girl anymore; she must have grown to be a young lady."Mike hit his head, "If you go anywhere close to my sister, just know you are dead."Steve shrugged, "All I know is you won't be the one to get married to your sister."Another knock on his head and a smile graced Mike's lip. He was thankful that Steve brought him out of his thoughts and kept him occupied until they got to their destination. The cab stopped in front of the gate, "This is as far as any public transport is allowed to go."Mike nodded; he knew that. They both dropped in front of the gate, paid the cab man off and stood in front of the gate. They were both not ready for whatsoever they would meet inside. After two minutes, one of the security guards came to meet them. "Hello, you can't stand in front of the gate like this?" He said shooing them off like they were flies disturbing the vicinity. Mike just stared at him. He must be a new worker in the mansion, the old workers knew him well enough. It was Steve that responded, "We are not just standing here. We live here."The guard repeated the cab's man's action by looking at them from head to toe. "I think it will be best to leave this place. If the owner finds out, you will not like this."Mike finally spoke, "Call me the head security, Rowan."The guard paused and wondered how he knew the name of their head security. He thought if they were really serious about living in the mansion. Confused, he placed a call inside and requested the attention of the head of security.Mike was angry about all the procedures. He couldn't believe that his parents didn't see it fit to inform the guards that their only son and heir to their company was coming back home. The rude guard was suddenly quiet, but his gaze spoke volumes. "What are you looking at?" Steve complained. The guard averted his gaze from them with a simple murmur. His family house had really changed; they were having more security than before, and there were flowers outside the gates now, he remembered when he asked his mother to plant flowers outside the gate to beautify the environment. His father had shunned it down, and it was not considered till he was sent out of the country. Finally, they planted the flowers they had rejected then."Mike. Is that truly Mike?" Rowan's voice called his attention back towards the gate. Before he could speak, Rowan had engulfed him in a warm hug, patting his back like he used to do when he was a little boy. He released him to look at him well, "You are now a grown man, not that little boy you used to be."Mike's response was only a smile. Then his gaze went to Steve, "Is this not Steve?" He hugged him too. "It's good to see you boys back at home."The guard was apologizing to them. "I'm sorry, Sir. I did not recognize you." Mike ignored him, while Steve patted his back, "Next time ask questions before jumping to conclusions. You could have easily lost your job this way, but thankfully, we are kind people." He said with a smile.Everywhere was different, everything felt different. Yet, Mike was glad to be back at home. He walked slowly beside Rowan who was giving him updates on the securities around the house. Steve was moving slowly beside them not interested in the stories as his gaze searched around as if he was looking for something. The rude guard was behind them helping with their luggage. When Mike left home, he thought it was just for a few years, he believed blindly that his parents were going to miss him and call him back home. Then five years came ten and finally fifteen years. To him now, they were practically strangers who had just birthed him.A young lady appeared from nowhere and dumped her body on him almost making him fall. He pulled her back, and glanced at her slowly, "Sharon, is that you?"The lady laughed as she nodded her head; pulled herself back on him. "I miss you, brother." He pulled her back again not believing the little girl that had wept while he was going was now this beautiful young lady in front of him."You did not miss me, Sharon," Steve said with his arms wide open. Sharon moved away from her brother to eye the strange guy, "Who are you?"Mike hid a smile that lingered on his lips. Steve held onto his heart dramatically, "You don't remember me." he feigned tears and a sob. "You really mean you don't remember me at all."Sharon just stared at him, then back at Mike, "Who is he, brother?""Nobody. Let's go." He cuffed his hand on Sharon's shoulder. "How's mum?"Steve cried dramatically, "I have no friend in this world. I have no friend."Rowan patted him on his back and dragged him forward, "You will survive, Steve.""I can't. I'm too heartbroken."Rowan laughed, "I missed your jokes. It's good to have you back home."Sharon told Mike all about his parents and how their mother missed him so much. It was hard to believe that the mother who never bothered calling him to check on him truly missed him. When he got into the sitting room, everywhere was silent. "Where is mother?"Sharon's gasped, "I forgot. They went to visit our future in-law."Amelia already hated the family they planned to marry her into. She got that they were eager to tie them together, but how could they come visiting without her said future husband? She knew she wasn't eager to get married but that doesn't mean she wouldn't have preferred seeing whoever she was meant to spend the rest of her life with. It was only those who had nothing to do with the marriage that had come visiting. She was seated between her mother and Ava, while her father sat in front like the chairman of the occasion. Her future-in-law was sitting opposite them, and the mother-in-law's gaze had not left her since she came. She whispered something in her father – in – laws ear.All Amelia felt at that moment was as if she was good about to be sold away. She felt her skin itchy and wished she could just leave the gathering. But, a gaze from her father was enough warning not to try anything funny."How have you been?" Her father said with a smile toward the Afonso. He had never smil
"Mum and Dad are back," Sharon said excitedly peeping from the door. Mike had settled quite well in the house, he had put his books on a shelf, his clothes were arranged neatly in the closet, and his art was carefully placed beside the bed. He was still looking for the best place to set them in. Sharon jumped inside, and settled on the bed, for someone who had not seen him in the last fifteen years, she felt way too comfortable with him. Maybe it was just the fact that they were siblings.Mike wasn't ready to face his parents, so he focused on looking for a perfect place for his art. Sharon picked one up, "What are these?" She shook it. "Is it some kind of paper?"Mike smiled, "It's my drawings. Do you want to see it?" He would rather do anything than go to his parents. She nodded excitedly. It was really great to have someone else in the house. Mike sat carefully beside her while he opened one. Her gaze was fixed on the drawing, "Wow! You are really good." She touched the drawing
Angie, Amelia's stepmother had never sucked to anyone before in her presence. She acted as if she was a force to reckon on her own, but right now she found herself as her stepmother's point of interest. It was as if she was literally sucking up to her. She sat in a corner of her room giving orders to maids who were working on Amelia. If Amelia didn't know better, she might have thought that it was the said wedding day. They bathed her and dressed her up in one of the designers wears her stepmother bought her. They changed her hairdo and also completed her makeup. Amelia barely recognized herself when she glanced at the mirror. For the first time, her stepmother had strictly forbidden Ava from coming into her room at that moment. According to her what she was doing was serious business, and Ava could mess it up. Amelia almost laughed out loud, she didn't need Ava to help her in spoiling their plans, she was more than enough to do that for herself. When they were done, her stepmother
Things hardly made Mike laugh. But, at that moment he found himself laughing out loud. He stared at Amelia's stepmother as if she had just made the joke of the century. His gaze moved to Amelia who was quiet and touching the small bag in her hand like it held the most important things in the world. He said nothing in response to her joke, but she repeated it again."My daughter Ava will be your wife"Mike stared at Ava, truly she looked beautiful in the Barbie kind of manner but he didn't feel that first attraction he felt with Amelia. He was seeing both of them for the first time, yet he felt strangely connected to Amelia. But, he had no interest in this Ava.He focused his attention back on Amelia as if her stepmother hadn't said anything. "As I said, we could work it out if that's the reason for your proposal."Amelia wasn't listening to him though; her gaze was on her stepmother who was staring at her in a strange manner. Ava also wore a frown on her face. Mike could read thei
"I need help." He stared at the message she had dropped. For some reason, he felt concerned. Since they started chatting, she had never asked for help or hinted that she was in some sort of trouble. She had been contended with discussing her plans and her future. She usually likened herself to a caged bird that desires nothing more than to be free. Free from what exactly, he had no idea.Mike dropped the picture he was painting and relaxed on his chair. "What's wrong? Is there a problem?"The message was delivered but there was no indication that she read it. She mostly reads and responds immediately. He stared at the phone as if he could control her to respond to the message. Pheonix12 had been his friend on messenger for as long as he could remember and apart from Steve she was the only one he could relate with, but it was a pity that she wasn't willing to tell him her real name, even after their long time relationship. Yet, he couldn't judge her because he had also refuse
"What's wrong? Is there a problem?"She read the message for the fifth time. How was she supposed to ask him for help without telling him her story? A story she doesn't have the privilege to tell until she was outside the hell called home. She hadn't thought far about it when she had sent a cry for help. It wasn't the best solution for her. She only has herself in this world, and she would do her best to help herself. She closed her messenger app and stared down at Loveth.Loveth crouched on the floor sweeping the place that had been turned into a mess by Ava. "Does this mean you are no longer getting married, miss?"Amelia lay on her bed confused; if they were trying to cut her off from marrying the stranger, she was supposed to be happy, but she wasn't happy. She had no idea why she was feeling bad about it. It must have been because she had put her hope into escaping through the marriage, and the guy seem to be understanding. She had the feeling he was going to grant her
The first step Amelia took outside, all she could think of was freedom. It would have been great if this was her leaving the mansion completely and not coming back for any reason, but it was just a visitation to her future in-laws. She stepped into the tinted glass while Ava sat beside her. Her mother sat in the passenger's seat and her father was the designated driver for the day.Inside the car felt more suffocating than anything for her, being in close range with her family and knowing there was no means to escape was suffocating. She held her chest and stared outside the window wanting to avoid any means of conversation with any member of her family."Did I tell you that I met Mike yesterday?" Ava said in a low voice. Amelia ignored her. Ava never spoke to her not to talk about giving her updates about what was happening in her life. So, she had no idea why she was suddenly telling her about this. "We met at a club and he is such a gentleman; the perfect guy for me." She paused
Amelia picked up her phone, chatting with her friends online. Ava stared at her, wishing she could report to her mother that Amelia had a phone; but it was open news now. No one cares. Her future–in–law had insisted they needed the means to get in touch with Amelia, and they needed her number in case of emergency. Ava walked into the room brushing things on the floor without picking them back up. Amelia stared at her favorite brush on the floor, followed by her favorite mirror broken into pieces. It's okay, she thought to herself. 'Ava was trying to get a reaction from me, but I won't give her the satisfaction'. Her eyeballs were red and her lips were bruised from biting it."Are you glad now that you have stolen my groom?" Ava stood in front of her with puffy eyes. Amelia dressed in a baby pink gown Mike had delivered through an agency, closed her eyes, and put her eyeliner back in her makeup back. It was her first date with Mike, not that she was looking forward to it,
Epilogue Amelia had slept all through the trip; being pregnant only makes her wants to sleep all the time. By the time she felt a little nudge by her side they were somewhere far from home. She could barely pinpoint exactly where Mike had taken them to, but the bright sun and the beach side felt strangely familiar. The air was different too. More natural and makes her lean more into him. She felt like she had seen this numerous time, but it also felt like she hadn’t seen it before. Mike assisted her from the car, and it all hit her like a wave. She had the picture of this in her room for a long time. She had sigh looking at him and thinking it there was heaven, this would be it. It seemed so out of reach then like she could never get here no matter how much she tried, but here she was with her husband. She jumped on Mike. “Are you serious?”He nodded, “Of course, I am serious. I bought this place for you.”Her heartbeat raced. It was a different thing visiting the place she had
The whole room was silent as everyone anticipated the next word out of the newscaster’s mouth. In front of the newscaster, in the left corner of the television was an old picture with five young men and women, with some children sitting on the floor in front of them in a chain. It was easy enough to tell the relationship of the children with the adult. They looked so good while the children looked like they could barely stand without falling. They looked malnourished. The headline was the most captivating; Child Trafficking exposed. They had exposed the names of everyone involved in the trafficking and declared them wanted. Apart from those in the pictures, the journalists were able to fish out more people backing them up behind the scenes. It was a bigger syndicate than Mike expected. It might be one of the reasons; that it was easier for Alfred to cover up the death of his parents. The picture made it easier for Mike’s man to find out a lot about Alfred and to get more vital infor
The news spread faster than Mike had expected, and his wife’s phone had continued to ring non-stop since the announcement. It was mostly from her foster family. He was certain there would be more calls from the company, but there was no finding out because he had forbidden them from reaching out to him. If they couldn’t handle those calls, they don’t deserve to be paid the amount they were. The families were spread out in the main mansion, all seated on the couch listening to the news. Every station talked about the sudden appearance of ‘Anne’ and the ownership of D&D, which suddenly brought back the hidden fraud cases. No one could get closer to the Afonso’s mansion, so they were perfectly at ease at home. Mike held Amelia’s phone, thinking she would be tempted to pick it up if the call was too much. If there were something Mike would thank the journalist for, it was their speed of linking up gossip. In a short time, they were able to figure out about Amelia’s identity and link her
Florence had displayed different emotions with her eyeballs within those few minutes, and at last, she settled for fake tears as she gripped the edge of his table, “I’m sorry, sir, but I don’t know much about him. He barely says important thing in front of me.”Mike narrowed his eyes at her, barely moved by her tears, “Seems you just decided your job isn’t precious to you. I’ll ask the HR to type your…”“No sir,” she screamed. Mike raised a brow at her. “I’m ready to talk.”And she did.She split every little thing she knew about Alfred; most she had gathered illegally, maybe hoping to threaten him when they had a misunderstanding. Anyway, it would work well for Mike without putting much effort into finding things about Alfred. After she had split her gust out, he dismissed her and called the H.R. to fire her. Someone who could be so greedy was of no benefit to the company; she could easily tell others their company secrets to gather favors for herself.Glad from all he had gathered f
As Mike checked his phone, he shared a look with Steve, and they both smiled. It was time to go home. Mike made a call to get a new car before they went home.Amelia couldn’t hide her anxiety after waking up and she didn’t see Mike by her side. He had just gotten hurt, and she knew he might be on one of his dangerous missions. If only he could tell her about it; he keeps trying to protect her.She stood beside the door and called him numerous times, but he wasn’t picking up, which only scared her more. Her mother had tried peeling her away from the door, but it was useless. When Amelia heard a car moving into the mansion, she ran out with Anne hot on her leg. She was super excited until she saw it was a different car, and her legs faltered on the way. The car stopped directly in front of the main mansion, and Sharon came out before Mike’s aunt.Guilt filled her as she watched his uncle come out of the car. Ever since she had gotten her mother out of the hospital, she hadn’t gone back
Mike woke earlier than the previous day, and although his hand hurt like crazy, he unbound the bandage and tried some hand exercises he had seen online last night.Amelia was sound asleep, which was the best. He knew she suspected things, which was one of the reasons he needed to act faster. Thankfully, her foster father had fallen into his trap after his short visit to his house, and the accident was somehow a blessing in disguise. To them, he was in a serious accident. They thought he was still unconscious. He had made sure that the hospital said that if anyone called to ask of a Michael Afonso apart from his wife.It made it easier for him to carry out his operations without them suspecting him. He dressed quietly and called Steve to join him.During their previous investigation, they found out that most of the children would be shipped out of the orphanage today because they already suspected Mike was up to something. Now, it was up to him to save the children, and recuperating
The sound of the ambulance and the continuous shouting matched Amelia’s heartbeat. Sharon ran beside her, trying to calm her down, but Amelia pushed through every person and thing until she got to the hospital reception. The disadvantage of her speed was that she couldn’t say a word as she tried to catch her breath. Thankfully, Sharon was quick to ask the receptionist, “Michael Afonso.”The nurse nodded and started typing on her laptop; by then, Amelia had regained her breath, “Where’s my husband?” she screamed, gaining the attention of others in the hospital. Sharon ran beside her, trying to calm her down when another nurse walked up to them. She spoke with Sharon for a while before leading them towards the V.I.P. section of the hospital. As soon as she saw Steve outside the ward, Amelia rushed towards the room, ignoring Steve at the door. Sharon stopped to talk with Steve,Mike lay on the bed with a bandaged arm, but he seemed alright.Amelia ran towards him and started touching ev
When Mike woke up the next morning, Amelia was fast asleep. He moved out of the bed as silently as he could, trying to avoid waking her up. She looked so lovely asleep, so he planted a kiss on her forehead. Her forehead wrinkled, and he almost beat himself for waking her up until she sighed, turned, and went back to sleep. Mike let out a breath of relief. He knew Amelia was already suspicious of whatever was happening, but he didn’t want her to wake up before he left. He did everything as silently as possible before exiting the room. The moment the door closed, Amelia opened her eyes and jumped out of the bed as quickly as she could with her baby bump. She picked the first dress she saw and wore it quickly. She waited to listen to Mike’s car sound before she ran to the nearest car to follow him.She didn’t think about anything as she jumped in the car and drove after him. Hiding from someone while following them was easier in a movie, but to her, it seemed Mike knew she was following
Amelia paced in the room with her phone in her hands. She kept trying to call Mike, but he wasn’t picking up her call. “I told you to sit down. I’m sure Mike’s fine. He might be driving.” Anne tried to reassure her.She shook her head, “You don’t get it, mum. Mike did all he could to prove he’s worthy to led company. Can you imagine how he might feel knowing he had been dismissed as the C.E.O.”If it weren’t for Anne, she would have been on the way to the company now, but her mother blocked the way, preventing her from going out, which resulted in her calling Mike multiple times. But Mike wasn’t picking up her call.“He must be very devastated right now, Mum. As his wife, I should be beside him in times like this. I should be where he is.”Anne closed the gap between them, stopping her from pacing around the room. “Fine, Amelia. If you want to see him that badly, I can drive you to the company.”For a second, she thought it was a great idea but suddenly shook her head. “No, mum. Hav
