(Ethan)

I paced the waiting room, checking my watch again. Ten minutes since they’d taken Lila into delivery.

“Sit down, Ethan,” my mother said gently. “You’ll wear a hole in the floor.”

“We should have known.” I ran my fingers through my hair. “It’s too late. She should have gone into labor a week ago.”

“Babies come when they want,” Romy said from where she sat beside Alexander. “Not when we plan.”

Caroline Montgomery dabbed her eyes. “My poor girl. All alone in there…”

“Nick’s on his way,” Alexander assured her. “Traffic’s bad, but—”

The delivery room doors burst open. A nurse rushed out, calling for more hands.

“What’s happening?” Jonathan Montgomery demanded.

“The baby’s breech,” the nurse threw over her shoulder as she ran past. “We need—”

Nick exploded through the waiting room entrance, his tie askew. “Where is she?”

“Delivery room three,” I pointed. “But they won’t let—”

He was already running, shouldering past orderlies. A doctor tried to stop him.

“Sir, you can’t—”

(Ethan)I watched through the doorway as Lila’s eyes opened fully. Her fingers twitched on the white sheets as she smiled at Nick—she’d woken up after hours. Nick stared down at her as he stood beside her bed with Fleur in his hands.“Hey beautiful,” he whispered, brushing her hair back.I gripped the doorframe hard enough that my nails dug into the wood. Romy appeared at my side.“You don’t have to watch this,” she said.“I need to.”Inside, Lila turned toward Nick. Her voice came out raspy. “Fleur? Is she…”“Perfect.” Nick stared down at our daughter in his arms. “Ready to meet your mama?”My chest constricted as he placed Fleur in Lila’s arms. Tears spilled down her cheeks while she traced our daughter’s tiny features.“Hello, my love.” Lila kissed Fleur’s forehead. “I’ve waited so long for you.”Alexander cleared his throat. “Should we give them some time?”“No.” Lila looked up at all of us crowded in the doorway. “Come meet her properly.”The family flooded in—the Montgomerys, my

(Ethan)I pushed open the door to James’s room, where he lay curled up on the hospital cot, clutching his space-themed backpack.“Dad!” He leaped up, throwing his arms around my neck. “Is the baby here?”“Yes.”“Can I see her? Can I see her?” he said excitedly.“Of course, buddy.” I scooped him up. “Ready to meet your sister?”“Is she tiny?” James asked as we walked down the hall. “Cara says babies are super tiny at first.”“She is tiny for us, but bigger than most babies,” I adjusted him on my hip. “Speaking of Cara…”“I miss her,” James sighed. “She always knows cool facts.”We reached Lila’s room. Nick stood by the window, rocking Fleur while Lila slept.“Look who’s here,” I announced quietly.Nick turned. “Hey James. Come meet your sister properly.”James squirmed down from my arms and tiptoed to Nick’s side. “She’s so small! Dad said she’s big.”“Big for her age,” Nick laughed. “Want to hold her?”James’s eyes went wide. “Can I?”“Here.” Nick placed Fleur carefully in my arms. “S

(Lila)I stared down at Fleur sleeping in her crib, counting each tiny breath. The clock on the nursery wall showed 6 PM. Nick’s arm slid around my waist.“You’ve been here for hours,” he said quietly.“What if she stops breathing? I’ve read babies do that sometimes. What if someone takes her while we sleep?”“The security system—”“There are spies! Remember how Thompson put cameras here? No, nobody can be trusted,” I gripped the crib railing. “Robert took James from our engagement party! He got through security. Grace got to James’s school. All the cameras and guards in the world didn’t stop them.”“Lila.” Nick turned me to face him. “Dr. Morris said this anxiety—”“Isn’t normal? That I’m being paranoid?” I pulled away. “The nannies think I’m crazy, hovering all the time, but they don’t understand. Maybe one of them will take her away…”“Neither do I, not really. Talk to me.”“I keep having these dreams.” I touched Fleur’s dark curls. “Someone breaks in, takes her. Or she stops breat

(Lila)I jerked away from Ethan’s arms like I’d been burned. Cara stood frozen in the doorway, her face carefully blank despite the hot chocolate threatening to spill over the mugs’ rims.“I should go check on James,” I muttered, moving toward the door.“No.” Cara’s voice rang firm. “We need to talk about what just happened.”“Nothing happened,” Ethan said quickly. “Lila was upset about Fleur—”“And you comforted her. I understand.” Cara handed us each a mug. “But we both know it’s more complicated than that.”I gripped the hot chocolate, letting the warmth seep into my trembling fingers. “I’m sorry, Cara. I didn’t mean to—”“To what? Hug someone who understands your trauma?” Cara settled into the rocking chair. “There’s nothing wrong with that. What’s wrong is pretending it’s just a hug when we all know there’s more beneath the surface.”“I don’t—I wouldn’t—” My face burned. “Nick and I—”“Are happy together,” Cara finished. “Just like Ethan and I are building something real. (Ethan)I stood in Montgomery Mansion’s ballroom, watching doves flutter in their ornate cages. Lila’s mother had gotten her wish—twenty pure white birds ready to be released at the reception.“The doves are staying in those cages until the actual wedding day,” Alexander said firmly to the handler. “My security team will monitor them.”The security team, dressed in matching navy suits Alexander had insisted on, nodded in unison.“Look how pretty!” James exclaimed, pressing his face against a cage. “Can I help release them?”“Of course,” I told him. “You’re the ring bearer for both couples, remember?”“The most important job,” Cara added, adjusting his bow tie.The wedding planner rushed past, barking orders into her headset. “No, the flowers need to be arranged by height! And where are the ice sculptures?”“You’d think we were hosting a royal wedding,” Nick muttered beside Lila.“Mother does love a spectacle,” said Lila as she bounced Fleur gently. She brought her daughter everywhere,

(Lila)I walked down the aisle beside Nick, Fleur cradled against my white dress. She gurgled happily, reaching for the crystals sewn into my bodice.“Careful, little one,” I whispered. “Those aren’t toys.”Behind us, Alexander and Romy followed, their hands clasped tightly. The string quartet played softly as we approached the flower-covered altar.James stood proudly between the couples, clutching two ring pillows. “I remembered both sets!” he announced loudly, making the guests laugh.“Perfect job,” Nick praised quietly. The officiant smiled at us all. “We gather today to celebrate not one, but two unions…”I barely heard the words, too focused on Fleur’s warmth against my chest and Nick’s hand in mine as he stood beside me. Until movement caught my eye—Ethan shifting in the front row, Cara’s hand settling on his arm.“The rings, please,” the officiant requested.James stepped forward importantly. “Here are the rings that show your love!” he proclaimed, exactly as practiced.Nick s

(Lila)I shifted Fleur to my other arm as she began fussing during dinner. The noise around my parents’ dining table grew louder—Nick and my father discussing business, my mother cooing at Fleur, and Alexander arguing with Romy about some charity function.“Let me take her,” Nick offered, reaching for our daughter.“I’ve got her,” I insisted, bouncing Fleur gently. My father’s laughed. “Nicholas, you really should consider expanding your Pacific routes. The opportunities in Singapore are immense right now.”Nick nodded. “We’ve been exploring options there. The regulatory environment is tricky, but—”“Lila, darling,” my mother interrupted, “would you mind grabbing those photo albums I mentioned? I want to show Romy those pictures from Alexander’s sailing phase.”“Mother, nobody needs to see those,” Alexander grumbled.I stood, grateful for the excuse to stretch my legs. “Where are they?”“Your father’s study. Top shelf of the bookcase, I believe.”I handed Fleur to Nick, whose expressi

(Lila)I bolted upright in bed, instantly alert. Something had woken me from a dead sleep. The digital clock glowed 2:17 AM in the darkness of our bedroom. Nick slept soundly beside me, his arm still draped over the spot where I had been lying. Then I heard it—a soft, distressed whimper from the baby monitor.“Fleur?” I whispered, already sliding out of bed.The whimpering grew stronger, different from her usual middle-of-the-night fussing. My heart rate quickened as I hurried down the hall to the nursery, pushing open the door with shaking hands.Fleur thrashed in her crib, her tiny face flushed an alarming shade of red. When I touched her forehead, I yanked my hand back. She was burning up.“Nick!” I screamed. “Nick, get in here!”I scooped her into my arms, her body radiating heat through her pajamas. Nick appeared seconds later, hair disheveled and eyes wild.“What’s wrong?” he asked, immediately alert.“She’s burning up. Get the thermometer!”Nick rushed to the bathroom while I r

(Ethan)I saw the panic flash across James’s face at Grace’s announcement. Whatever she was about to reveal clearly terrified him.“Mom?” he whispered.Grace looked directly at him, then at me. “It’s about Robert Sterling,” she said. “And why his associates are targeting Romy.”Alexander stood abruptly. “This isn’t the place for—”“It is exactly the place,” Grace interrupted. “Because I’m the reason they found her.”The room went completely still. Romy, who had stayed quiet most of the evening, pale hands protectively cupping her pregnant belly, stared at Grace with dawning horror.“What did you do?” she asked, voice barely audible.“When I was at my worst,” Grace explained, hands shaking, “I contacted some of Robert’s old associates. I thought they might help me…hurt people who had hurt me.” She swallowed hard. “I told them where to find you, Romy. I gave them information about the Montgomery security protocols.”Alexander’s face hardened to granite. “You put my wife and unborn child

(Ethan)I held Cara’s hand tightly as we followed Nick and Lila toward Fleur’s room, fear gripping us all despite Dr. Weiss’s excited tone.“What is it?” Lila demanded. “What’s happened?”Dr. Weiss pointed to the monitor displaying Fleur’s test results. “These inflammatory markers have decreased by over seventy percent in just twenty-four hours. It’s unprecedented with this protocol.”“Is that…good?” Nick asked hesitantly.“Good? It’s extraordinary.” Dr. Weiss smiled broadly. “Your daughter’s immune system has essentially reset itself. The disease markers are approaching normal ranges.”Lila nearly collapsed with relief. “So she’s going to be okay?”“Better than okay,” Dr. Weiss assured her. “If this trend continues, we’re looking at complete remission, possibly within days rather than months.”Nick embraced Lila. Through the doorway, I watched Fleur sleeping peacefully, unaware of the miracle happening within her tiny body. The good news spread quickly through our group. Alexander im

(Ethan)I paced Boston Children’s Hospital’s sterile corridor, the lights harsh against my tired eyes. Fleur’s reaction had sent us all racing from my house to the airport, where Nick’s private jet waited to fly us to Boston.“Any updates?” I asked as Nick emerged from Fleur’s room.“She’s stabilizing.” He rubbed his face wearily. “The doctors think it was an isolated reaction to the antibody component. They’ve adjusted the protocol.”Lila remained by Fleur’s bedside, refusing to leave even for meals. Through the observation window, I watched her stroking Fleur’s tiny hand, her lips moving in silent prayers or promises.“She needs sleep,” I murmured. “This can’t be good for her.”“Dr. Weiss arranged for a therapist to speak with her tomorrow,” Nick said. “Professional intervention, finally.”The waiting room had become our temporary headquarters. James slept curled against Cara on a small couch, while Alexander worked remotely from his laptop. Jonathan had returned to New York to begi

(Ethan)I gazed out the cabin window as first light pierced the forest. The storm had finally passed, leaving everything dripping and fresh. James still slept on the worn couch between Nick and me, his face peaceful despite yesterday’s ordeal.“We should head back,” I whispered to Nick over James’s head. “Everyone must be worried sick.”Nick nodded, dark circles under his eyes evidence of our sleepless night. “I’ll call the driver to meet us at the access road. Signal’s back.”While Nick stepped outside to make calls, I gently shook James awake. “Time to go home, buddy.”“Already?” James rubbed his eyes, looking smaller than his years, wrapped in the cabin’s old blanket. “Is it still raining?”“No, storm’s passed.” I ruffled his hair, still damp from yesterday. “But we have a lot of worried people waiting to see you.”“Are they mad?”“They’re just relieved you’re safe.” I helped him pack his small backpack. “Though grandma might never let you out of her sight again.”The hike back was

(Ethan)Nick was already pulling emergency gear from the trunk—flashlights, rain ponchos, a first aid kit. “Call your security team,” he told the driver. “Have them continue monitoring from their position, but tell them we’re approaching on foot from the south ridge.”We set off into the storm-whipped forest, rain soaking through our inadequate protection almost immediately. The beam of my flashlight wavered and danced across the sodden ground as we picked our way along the ridge trail.“Still think this was a good idea?” Nick shouted over the wind after we’d been walking for about twenty minutes.“Better than sitting in that car,” I called back. “We should be getting close to the valley viewpoint. The cabin’s visible from there in daylight.”We pressed on, slipping occasionally on mud-slicked rocks, helping each other across washed-out sections of trail. Despite our business animosity, we coordinated our movements. Two men united by a singular goal. Finally, we reached the viewpoint,

(Ethan)“Is it still in her family?”“Yes, but it’s closed for the season. No one’s been there in months.”Nick was already on his phone, pulling up a map. “Address?”I remembered Grace telling me about it, so I gave him the details, watching as he relayed them to his security team. “Have someone drive by, but don’t approach yet. If he’s there, we don’t want to spook him.”The police arrived, taking statements and photos of James. An Amber Alert was issued despite his voluntary departure—at eleven years old, he was considered at serious risk alone.Hours passed in panic as we did interviews and made phone calls. By evening, the police had confirmed a bus driver remembered James boarding a northbound bus around 1:15 PM. The cabin was looking more and more likely.“We should go,” I told Nick as we huddled in the school conference room. “Now. If he’s headed to the cabin, it’s at least a four-hour trip. He could already be there, alone in the dark.”“Agreed,” Nick said. “My team has a car

(Ethan)I sat at my desk, reviewing the latest filing in our legal battle against Nicholas Baldwin Shipping. Jonathan had outdone himself this time—the injunction was airtight, backed by connections that even Nick’s considerable influence couldn’t easily overcome.Victory should have tasted sweeter. Instead, I felt hollow, Cara’s words echoing in my mind: “Neither of you is willing to be the bigger person.”My phone rang—the school. I answered immediately, expecting another incident with James being bullied about our family’s public drama.“Mr. Baldwin? This is Principal Watkins. I’m calling because James didn’t report to his afternoon classes.”My blood ran cold. “What do you mean? He was there this morning.”“Yes, he attended his morning sessions, but after lunch, he didn’t return to class. His teacher marked him absent, and when we checked, he wasn’t on campus.”“Did you check everywhere? The library, the nurse’s office?”“We’ve conducted a thorough search,” the principal assured m

(Ethan)“Sorry I’m late,” I said. “Work crisis.”“The injunction,” she nodded. “It’s all over the business news.”I followed her inside, noticing the apartment looked different—some of her things had been packed into boxes by the door.“You’re moving?” I asked, heart sinking.“Just organizing,” she said, settling onto the couch. “I needed something to do with all this nervousness.”I sat opposite her, unsure how to begin. “Cara, about what Grace said—”“Let me go first,” she interrupted gently. “I’ve had time to think, and I want to be clear about where I stand.”I nodded, bracing myself.“I love you, Ethan,” she said simply. “I believe you love me too, but I also believe Grace was right—you haven’t fully processed your feelings for Lila.”“I’m trying to,” I assured her.“I know. But trying isn’t the same as succeeding.” Cara folded her hands in her lap. “And here’s the thing—I can’t compete with a ghost. I won’t compete with her.”“You’re not competing—”“Let me finish,” she said fir

(Ethan)I hung up the phone, satisfaction coursing through me. The Singapore Trade Commission had just approved our joint venture’s licensing application—the same application Nick had spent months trying to block.“Good news?” Jonathan asked, entering my office without knocking.“The best,” I confirmed. “We’re cleared for operations. Nicholas Baldwin’s redirect strategy failed.”Jonathan smiled thinly. “Nicholas always underestimates the value of personal relationships. My connections in Singapore go back three decades.”“He’ll retaliate,” I warned. “This isn’t over.”“Let him.” Jonathan settled into the chair opposite my desk. “He’s run out of legal options. Anything more would cross into actionable territory, and Nicholas is too smart for that.”My phone rang with an incoming text from Cara: “Can we talk today? Important.”We hadn’t spoken much since she’d left my home three days ago. Both of us needed space to process Grace’s revelations and their implications for our relationship.
