“Act like what?” I interrupted.

“Like you are in love,” she said.

“We are,” I said, crossing my arms.

“Are you?” she asked. Her eyes were slits.

“Yes,” I said. “Why are you so against us being together? Against your son’s happiness?”

She snorted. It wasn’t something I ever expected from a queen. “All I want is Luke to be happy. It’s all I’ve ever wanted since I saw him.”

“But no one will ever be good enough, will they?” I asked.

“Not unless I choose her,” Gia said.

“And you wouldn’t choose me?” I had never done anything to this woman. Now, I understood why Luke was so upset when she reacted the way she did to me. It was a personal attack.
