DORIAN'S POV

I dropped the last file for the day and breathed out in relief. It was already very late at night but I was really excited.

I was finally done with everything and my life could resume its former glory by the time.

The first person that came to my mind was Anna, and I immediately dialed her line, but there was no response. Could she be sleeping already?

The door opened and Brenda walked in, "Boss," She called excitedly.

"You're done too?" I asked and she nodded. "Great. Our lives can finally return to normal from tomorrow on. You're going home already? I could drop you," I offered.

She immediately smiled and agreed. Just then, her phone rang and she checked. "Boss..." She called shakily.

My eyes twitched and I frowned. What could make Brenda so uncomfortable? "What's it?" I still managed to ask.

She raised her head to look at me and moved closer to me. She handed her phone over and I received it. On the screen was a video of Anna who bent in front of a door and cryi

  • Beyond the betrayal    Chapter 55

Dorian's POV I woke up the next morning pensive and annoyed, partly because I had a restless night punctuated with brief dreams and overthinking. I was motionless for a minute as I tried to remember the details of the dream but gave up when I couldn't recall it. I looked at my phone and groaned as I saw the time. I had overslept which was something that happened rarely as I was a stickler for routine. With a manic burst of energy, I got up and began preparing for work. I needed no one to tell me that my day was only going to get more weird. Once my schedule was broken, it was only natural that the rest of the day became shitty. I knew that much from experience. My pensive mood continued as I drove to the office and I only heard my name after I had been called at least thrice. I snapped at Brenda when she got in my business then asked her to call a mandatory meeting for all employees. She didn't hurry to do it but hesitated a bit and I knew she was curious as to why I was call

  • Beyond the betrayal    Chapter 56

Dorian's POV Once I left Anna, I went back to my office with the knowledge that the board would be phoning soon. As usual, the call came in just a couple of minutes later. There was that slight calmness in the chairman’s voice, but it was tinged with disapproval. “Dorian, what’s this I hear about an announcement? A relationship with an employee?” I noticed myself counting to five silently before saying anything. As irritating as it is, I am only human and have to factor in the fact that there is a hierarchy. I completely focused on the task at hand instead of the condescending tone that had come across. “Yes, as I’ve responded to the query raised by the employees in the office, I had to make it very clear in order for everyone to be on the same page and not create tension within the workplace.” “While I get what you are trying to say, there are some ethical issues and the risk of conflicting interests. The board will need reassurances.” “There is no project for which I oversee th

Anna's POV The shift in my colleagues' behaviour was subtle at first—a hesitant pause in conversations as I entered a room, awkward smiles where there used to be casual fun. By lunchtime, it was impossible to ignore. The whispers followed me, just out of earshot, and the knowing glances stung more than outright confrontation would have. It was Brenda who confirmed my suspicions with a strained attempt at small talk. “You know how offices are,” she said, her tone too casual. “People love a bit of gossip.” I managed a smile and nodded, but my appetite vanished. This was what I wanted to avoid. The hostility came from unexpected corners: a terse email from a colleague who usually flooded my inbox with jokes; a project lead suddenly too busy to review my contributions. Others were painfully polite, treating me like a fragile ornament they were afraid to break. Those ones I hated the most. Despite all this, I kept my focus on my work, determined not to let the unease get to me. But t

Daniel’s POV I had just finished berating an obnoxious staff member when I received the damning report of Dorian's announcement. The announcement was nothing short of audacious—it was hard to remove it from my head. It wasn’t just about Anna; it was about him drawing a line in the sand, daring anyone to cross it. Well, I was prepared to take that dare. I leaned back into my plush chair, scrolling through my contacts as I hashed up my plan. The board members, the influential figures Dorian had cultivated so carefully, would hear from me soon enough. I resolved not to go with overt accusations—that would be too obvious—I would instead plant seeds of doubt among them. A well-timed comment here, a subtle insinuation there. Anna’s sudden rise in the company? Too good to be true. Her relationship with Dorian? Convenient, wasn’t it? People were always eager to believe the worst when ambition was involved, and I was going to ensure that the whole thing blew out of proportion. But this

Anna's POV Later that evening, after most of the office had emptied, I found myself in Dorian’s office. He sat behind his desk, his brow furrowed as he read the note Brenda insisted I bring to him. When he finally looked up, his expression was a mix of anger and concern. “This is serious, Anna,” he said, his voice firm. “We can’t ignore this.” I shifted uncomfortably in my chair. “It’s probably just someone trying to scare me off. I don’t want to overreact.” “You’re not overreacting,” he replied, standing and moving to sit beside me. “This isn’t just petty office drama anymore. It’s harassment.” I looked down, feeling a mix of gratitude and unease. “What do we do?” “I’ll take care of it,” he said, his tone leaving no room for doubt. “First, I’ll speak with HR and make sure they investigate. And I’m arranging for increased security. We’ll install cameras near your desk and around the office.” “Isn’t that a bit much?” I asked, though part of me felt relieved. “No,” Dorian said

Dorian's POV The email from Anna hit my inbox just as I was about to leave the office. The subject line alone made me pause as it sounded ominous—“Final Warning”. My jaws tightened as I read the message and I stared at the screen for a long moment while my pulse was hammering. The first person my mind went to was Daniel. He had definitely crossed a line there. I’d overlooked it for too long, chalking it up to jealousy or bruised pride. But this? Harassing Anna? I stormed out of my office and headed straight out of the building. I resolved that I was going to take the matter up with him. I entered my car and drove quickly to his office. I furiously slammed the door of the car as I reached his place. In a way, I was surprised that I hadn't been stopped by the cops due to how fast I was driving. “Hello sir, you aren't allowed to go back there,” The receptionist said as I walked past the security and headed to his office. I ignored her and started walking up the flight of stairs

  • Beyond the betrayal    Chapter 61

Anna's POV “You look very beautiful, Anna,” A familiar face complimented me, raising his glass of champagne in my direction as he glanced with approval at my red silky dress. “Why, thank you, you look good yourself,” I responded in kind, putting a hand on my mouth in modesty. “I try,” He said, shrugging as he accepted the compliment. He was a coworker who had been giving me looks before Dorian had publicly claimed me as his. “Could I have this dance?” He asked further, emboldened by my accommodating manner. “Oh no, I've had quite a lot to eat. I'm tired as it is. Maybe when I'm feeling up to it,” I responded graciously. Taking the hint, he bowed then went off to another part of the room. I looked around and sighed at the happy people around. It was a company dinner party and things were going smoothly. Not for me though as my eyes were going to the door every five seconds in search of Dorian. Which boss came late to his own company dinner? He wasn't responding to calls but had

Dorian's POV “So Dorian, what is it you wanted to see me about? You sounded like you were in a hurry.” The speaker was reclining on an armchair across from me. A desk filled with books and journals separated us. I could see his eyes take in my appearance carefully and I knew he had taken my disheveled look into serious account. He was my lawyer after all. The main reason I had come to see him though wasn't for his law skills. On the side, he was a private investigator. It was for this reason that I had asked to see him in a rush. “The job I'm giving you should be done quietly and you shouldn't involve another soul in it.” He looked offended and opened his mouth to defend himself but I stopped him. “I know you're going to talk about your professional ethics and all and how you don't talk about your work. This is different, you don't even get to involve any of your buddies on it. You do all the legwork by yourself.” “Alright, this sounds serious. I'll do everything as you say,

The wealth was staggering—far more than they could ever need. But it wasn’t about the money. It was about never having to run again. And for the first time in years, Anna felt safe. She spent her d

Not yet.But they would soon. And that was why Dorian moved quickly. He had infiltrated the wedding unnoticed, slipping in through the mass of high-profile guests, blending into the sea of tailored suits and designer dresses. The world was watching.Hundreds of guests filled the sprawling estate, their laughter mingling with the soft notes of a grand piano. The ballroom itself was a masterpiece—vaulted ceilings adorned with intricate gold detailing, chandeliers dripping with crystals that refracted the warm glow of candlelight. Outside, the vast gardens were illuminated with soft lanterns, casting long shadows over the manicured hedges and reflecting pools. Waiters in crisp white jackets wove through the crowd, balancing silver trays laden with vintage champagne, caviar, and delicate amuse-bouches.The guest list read like a who’s who of power—Hollywood elite, Wall Street titans, political dynasties, and foreign dignitaries. They moved through the estate like chess pieces, each conversation laced with subtle negotiations and whispered alliances. Tonight wasn’t just about a wedding—it was a spectacle, an orchestrated display of power. And at the center of it all stood Freddie Markson and Anna. The cameras n

Dorian’s POVDorian woke to cold sheets. At first, he thought that Anna was in the shower or making coffee. But the apartment was silent—too silent. His gut twisted. He reached across the sheets, finding them cool to the touch. For a moment, he lay still, his mind sluggish with sleep, but then it hit him—Sophia was gone. She had taken advantage of the night and slipped out.He slept late which was what had made him wake up late as well. He knew it was futile to search for her on foot since she'd have had a wide head start. His heart pounded as he threw back the covers and sat up. The apartment was silent. Too silent. He grabbed his phone from the nightstand and dialed her number. It went straight to voicemail. He tried again. Nothing.Panic gnawed at his insides as he swung his legs over the edge of the bed and stood, scanning the dimly lit room. Her things were still here—her shoes by the door, her jacket draped over the chair. But she wasn’t.Moving quickly, he checked the front do

The wind roared around me as the private jet touched down on a long, isolated runway. I had barely spoken since Viktor led me aboard. Part of me still couldn’t believe I had agreed to this. The USB drive he’d given me burned in my pocket, but I hadn’t dared to look at it. Not yet. Not until I knew exactly what I was stepping into.As the plane taxied to a stop, Viktor unbuckled his seatbelt and turned to me. “This is your last chance to turn back.”I met his gaze. “You and I both know that’s not an option.”His jaw tightened, but he said nothing. He stood and grabbed his coat, nodding for me to follow. The moment we stepped off the plane, a sleek black car was waiting for us, the driver already holding the door open.I slid into the backseat, my fingers curling into my lap as Viktor settled in beside me. The moment the door shut, the car moved forward, gliding through the night. The estate was massive. Iron gates loomed ahead, the emblem on them gleaming under the dim security lights.

The fear never left me. It clung to my skin, wrapped around my throat and sat heavy in my chest. I told myself I was strong, that I had survived worse, but the truth was, I was exhausted.Every night, I laid awake listening to Dorian’s steady breathing. I imagined them finding us, breaking down the door, dragging us back into the nightmare we had barely escaped. I imagined what they’d do to us.After a while I couldn’t live like this anymore. I knew what I had to do.I waited until Dorian was asleep. He always slept light, but exhaustion had finally caught up to him. It was the only chance I’d get.I moved carefully, easing out from under the blanket, barely breathing as I pulled on my coat. My heart pounded so hard I was sure it would wake him. My boots were by the door. I slipped them on, then hesitated. My fingers hovered over the doorknob. If I left now, there was no turning back.I stepped out into the night. The cold bit at my skin as I pulled my coat tighter, shoving my hands i

Anna’s POV“You need to be checked, Anna. We don’t know—”“No,” I cut him off, shaking my head. “We don’t know who we can trust.”Dorian clenched his jaw no doubt frustrated by my stubbornness but I wasn't going to back down.We were arguing once more about going to the hospital. I knew that he was right and I ought to but the facility had been relentless in hunting us down. We had no way of knowing who was still looking and who might recognize me. A simple doctor’s visit could be the mistake that led them straight to us.Instead, I focused on listening to my body, trusting what little instinct I had. The nausea came and went, and a strange sort of awareness settled in my bones. It wasn’t just me anymore.Dorian was torn. I saw it in the way his hands hovered near me, as if he wanted to shield me from everything but didn’t know how. He tightened security around us, changing our routines. No more walking the same routes, no more visits to the same markets or shops. He made sure the apa

  • Beyond the betrayal    Chapter 125

Anna's POV The highway stretched endlessly before us so much that I wondered if it would end. The sound of the engine was the only noise we heard as we crossed another nameless border under stolen identities. Dorian kept his hands tight on the wheel, his jaw clenched. There were so many things I wanted to talk to him about but I was content for the moment with watching the road signs blur past, my fingers tapping anxiously against my thigh.Neither of us spoke because we didn’t need to. We both understood what was happening. Our old lives and everything as we had known it were gone. The facility, the experiments, Reinhardt. Everything we had run from was behind us. But the thought of them was hard to let go off.I closed my eyes, but the moment I did, flashes of the lab burned behind my lids. I remembered being trapped on the cold metal table. The scalpel in my hands and the guard’s blood seeping between my fingers.I jolted upright, gasping and saw Dorian hovering above me. "Nigh

Anna's POV "You were meant to be an experiment," Dr. Reinhardt said to me leaning over to emphasise his words.I wondered what I had done to warrant the attention of this mad German scientist. I knew though that it had to be because of Dorian mixing up with the wrong crowd. The heavy door behind Reinhardt hissed open and a guard in a black uniform stepped in and Reinhardt nodded toward me."Prepare her for transport."I yanked at the restraints with all the strength I could summon. I wasn’t going to let them win like this. The guard moved closer and just then the lights flickered. The sudden dimming made Reinhardt pause and looked up at the overhead lamps which buzzed as if it was struggling for power. Then, in a blink, red emergency lights flooded the room.A low alarm groaned through the facility and the pitch kept increasing.Something was wrong.Reinhardt’s expression tightened as he turned toward the guard. "Find out what—"~BOOM!!!~The entire room shook and dust rained down
