Atlas’s words deepened my helplessness, and I became uneasy. I looked down and realized I didn’t just like him a bit. Instead, it seemed I had fallen into his trap. I was puzzled about why he always knew my thoughts, but I knew nothing about him.

Furthermore, I couldn’t determine what Atlas meant when he said he liked me. After all, I wasn’t good enough for him regarding my background, status, looks, and age. I should be older than him and was a divorced woman with a four-year-old kid.

A man like Atlas could easily find a better woman, yet I always thought of him despite myself. I didn’t know what to do but knew I should stop seeing him. Otherwise, I’d end up heartbroken.

“That was why you refused to answer my call. You were trying to avoid me,” Atlas’s tone and gaze lost their warmth.

I couldn’t help but step backward and look at him. “You’re right. I wanted to stop seeing you and still do because I’m not good enough for you. Perhaps I’ve been overthinking, but guys like you can g

After a long while, Atlas stopped kissing me and whispered, “Don’t I want to hear your bullshit excuses again, got it?”I looked at him in a daze as he wiped my tears. Then he wrapped his fingers around mine and led me deeper into the courtyard. We arrived at an elevator, and he pulled me inside. As we reached the top, I realized it was an observation deck with a magnificent view. A bottle of red wine was already there for us. He poured me a glass and said, “Drink it. It’s good for you.”Still in a daze, I looked at him and downed the wine. I felt much calmer after taking a deep breath. He pulled me to the railing, and we looked at the bright moon. Then, he embraced me from behind, saying, “Get rid of all your negative thoughts.”After a pause, he continued, “When I saved you at the riverside, I told myself I’d look after you forever. I don’t care about the past, only the future. I mean it.”I leaned into him and stared at the moon that seemed so close I could touch it. I stayed a

Carol awaited my decision. After some thought, I looked at her and said, “Since he’s already here, let’s meet him.”Carol smiled. “He might be up to no good, you know.”“It’s up to us to decide whether to work with them, right?” I said dismissively, “Let’s see what he says.”“All right, but please be careful." Carol left, and I watched her go with a raised brow, feeling fond of her. A while later, she led Damian into my office. The chubby man appeared to be in his late thirties. He smiled and shook my hand to greet me, “Nice to meet you, Ms. Chloe.”“Nice to meet you too, Mr. Damian. Have a seat.” I gestured toward the chair before my desk instead of the sofa.“Thanks!” He sat on the chair. “I heard so much about you. People keep telling me how well your company is doing.”I chuckled. “I’m sure every contractor in Foswood has heard of how I almost ran the company to the ground. I’m afraid you’re misinformed, Mr. Damian.”Damian blushed and smiled embarrassedly. “You’re being mo

I studied his expression after telling him I would set a higher price. He pondered before saying, “That’s not a problem, Ms. Chloe. I’m sure you’re aware of Echelon Group’s reputation. We’re well known for quality work and always pay on time.”I was frank and said, “One more thing. As everyone knows, Tanum Corporation is undergoing restructuring because of the divorce.” I let my words sink in. “So... I’m careful in choosing our projects. I may require my clients to pay a 30 percent deposit.”All right, I knew I was pushing it when his face stiffened. Still, he asked for my help, and those were my terms. He hesitated and said, “Well, how about we compromise a little?”“Why don’t you provide us with the blueprints, and we can quote a price based on them? We can discuss more details later. What do you think, Mr. Damian?”“Sure, I’ll send you the blueprints later, and then we’ll talk.”“I’ll wait for the drawings, then.” I walked around my desk to see him off, and he shook my hand w

After we made our decision, I talked to Ryan about the suppliers Benjamin had been working hard to keep.I invited Benjamin to join us in the discussion to lay out a more flexible strategy. Of course, we could only make arrangements after confirming the project with Echelon Group. That evening, Benjamin and Carol led all our employees to Gourmet Utopia, where they had reserved the largest private room available. It was fancier than my previous employee dinners, and all the staff were excited.Gourmet Utopia was known for hosting parties and banquets, so most of its customers came in groups. On my way there, I received a phone call from Atlas. He asked me where the dinner was, and I told him.“Hmm…” He reminded me, “No drinking, okay?”“Why do you care? I’m having a good time with my employees tonight.”I was happy that he sounded jealous. He asked, “Well, you’re mine, right?” I giggled and could picture him smiling on the other end. “Alright, I have to go. Don’t stay up too

Everyone burst into laughter. I knew Carol was trying to cover for me so people wouldn’t guess I was with Atlas. However, Ryan smiled at me, and I felt bad. Why did Ivanna tell me he liked me? Now, I felt like I had done him wrong. Ryan was thoughtful, so he only talked about work matters with me and asked nothing about Atlas’s extravagant treat.Carol went to settle the bill, but Atlas had already paid it. I wasn’t used to such special treatment. As we went to our cars, my phone rang again. I knew who it must be and answered, “You’re not spying on me again, are you?”“Mm-hmm.” A beam lit the path before me, and I squinted but couldn’t see who it was. Even though it was dark, I knew it was Atlas.Had he waited for me again? Somehow, I was touched.I walked over to his car, and he opened the door. “Get in.”Knowing I should not spend another night away from home, I paused. However, he held out his hand, and I entered the car. “I can’t stay with you tonight, okay?”“That’s

Atlas became busy with work, and his calls and messages became less frequent. I felt lonely and wondered if he had forgotten about me. However, just when I’d feel doubt, he’d reach out as if ensuring I didn’t forget him, either. His sweet gestures reminded me he was still present in my life. Before I could set up a meeting with Lauren, she called and asked to meet me. We seemed to know each other’s thoughts. I had to admit that she was capable and had thrived in the “strange circles” in Foswood. She could dig up dirty little secrets about any VIPs in town. Lauren had discovered that Echelon Group was currying favors with local bureaucrats to secure the prized plot of land. Matthew appeared to be their obedient lackey, and Melanie now led Ardora Construction. She used their association with Echelon Group to win as many contracts as possible. The duplex project appeared to be a real deal. Lauren said, “Integra was the original contractor for the development, and the duplexes

I was stunned. Why was Lauren crying? I handed her some tissues. “What’s the matter? Was it something I said?”Lauren quickly waved off my concern. It saddened me to see her carefully applied makeup start to run. She had always appeared graceful and friendly, much like a flight attendant. What could cause someone who cared about her looks to cry in front of me?She took the tissue paper and blotted her face. Her red fingernails were eye-catching, but that didn’t stop me from noticing her shoulders were shaking as she sobbed. I promised to be a genuine friend to Lauren. Before this, I had resentment toward her and doubted her friendship. Instead of saying anything, I let her vent her frustrations. When she pulled herself together, she dried off her remaining tears. “I’m sorry you had to see that.” “Hey, we all have our pain. Some solve them privately, while others must do so publicly—for instance, me. Everyone knows about my goddamn divorce,” I said. “They labeled me an abused

The unexpected female voice startled me, and I quickly looked at the caller ID. I was puzzled when I noticed it was an unfamiliar number.“I-I’m sorry! I-I was just…” I blushed as I started to explain myself, realizing my previous words were harsh. “I don’t recognize your voice. May I ask who this is?”The person on the other end didn't answer my question. Instead, she asked in a distant but authoritative tone, "Is this Chloe?”"Yes, it's me.""Prepare some steel window designs and bring them to ATL Empire’s Design Division," the woman’s voice was cold and commanding, leaving no room for doubt. "Come in person.""All right." Although I agreed, I couldn’t shake off my unease. I wondered who the woman was and why she was so cold.I rushed to the technical department and got them to print my designs. Then, I brought the quality inspection certificate and other validation documents before driving to ATL Empire’s Design Division.Design Division was in the main building but was an in

Four months later, at a hospital in Foswood. After being wheeled out of the delivery room, I saw my entire family waiting for me outside. My grandmother, supported by Hana, walked up to me, trembling. "Chlo, my Chlo, you've been through so much!"Beside my grandmother was a girl who looked a lot like me, standing silently beside my grandmother. She was the one who had been crafted to be my counterfeit. What was even more dramatic was that the DNA test results had revealed that she was actually my parents' daughter. When we found out, we cried tears of joy. It was truly heaven-sent. I closed my eyes, trying hard to recall my dreams. Usually, this scenario always appeared in my dreams, but now I couldn't remember any details.Atlas looked at me indulgently. "Take your time, don't rush. Your mom will help us."I took a deep breath, clearing all the distractions from my mind. I seemed to see my mom holding my hand, eagerly walking into the woods, looking around and at the treetops. As we ventured deeper into the woods, I asked, "Where are you taking me, Mom? The woods are so dark. I'm scared! Don't go in, Mom. There might be wild animals!""Don't be afraid. I'm here with you. We need to find the tallest tree.""Why do we need to find the tallest tree?""So you can remember!""But I can't walk anymore. I'm scared!""Go sit on that rock for a while. I'll come to you.""A rock," I murmured as I suddenly opened my eyes.I quickly stood up, searching for a place with rocks."Search where there are rocks," Atlas instructed the others.Everyone dispersed quickly,

I gazed at Atlas's anxious face, his features wavering before my eyes. "Chlo... tell me what's wrong," he said, concern etched on his handsome face. I glanced around the room, noticing all our loved ones present, their faces filled with worry, both inside and outside the door.Closing my eyes, I nestled into Atlas's embrace. I felt exhausted like never before. With a soft murmur, I confessed, "I'm... I'm okay." My head throbbed fiercely with an unbearable sensation."I'm fine," I repeated before settling back into his arms, still as a statue. In my ears, the echoes of my dream lingered.A team of medical staff rushed in. Atlas patted me gently. "Let the doctors check you out, sweetheart. You've been out for 48 hours! Let them examine you, okay?"He eased me onto the bed. After the doctors finished their examination, they briefed Atlas on the results.I drifted back to sleep, this time for real, unaware of anything. When I woke up again, the room was bright. Ernest was truly shaken by the sight before him, visibly trembling in fear."Everyone in the car, get out! You have one minute." After Atlas's words, several red dots appeared on the foreheads of the people inside the car.The driver immediately wet himself in fear, raising his hands. "N-No... please!..."As his hand reached for the door handle to exit the car, Kenzie shot him dead. I screamed in terror, but at the same time, the man in the passenger seat slumped over, also dead. However, that shot came from a sniper outside. The others were dumbfounded. The two men beside me immediately grabbed their heads and crouched down."Get out of the car!" Kenzie shouted loudly. The two men beside me acted as if they had been granted clemency, reaching to open the car door and shouting, "Don't shoot!" Then, they rolled out of the car, clutching their heads."Kenzie... release Chloe... save me!" Ernest wailed, his appearance filled with disdain.Kenzie's voice trembled. "Ernest...""

"I really haven't seen anything. What are you talking about? My dad never told me about this!" I gritted my teeth, holding onto this secret, but it was clear they already knew about the existence of the survey maps."If you want your children to live, you better tell me the truth. Otherwise, I won't hesitate to show you no mercy. Let me tell you the truth, I didn't plan on leaving alive!" Kenzie's admission was chilling."Then if I die, bitch, I'll take you down with me. Oh... no, scratch that. It'll be you and your children. Haha… So, tell me!" She hit me with the back of the gun."Kenzie, you know how Atlas feels about me. He wouldn't let me be harmed. Do you really think he'd tell me too much? About those maps you mentioned, not only do I not know, but I haven't even seen them. “Even if they exist, my father would only tell him..." I appealed to Atlas's protective feelings toward me, a reasonable plea since most men would be protective of their loved ones, especially Atlas.Ju

I adjusted my breathing and asked, "What do you want to know?"Although I asked this, my mind raced. "He's been back for some time now and has said too much... You've got to tell me, what exactly do you want to know?""Louis and Rory had a secret between them. What was it?" Kenzie said, her voice dripping with malice."They…" I deliberately gasped loudly, buying myself some time. I knew Atlas would come to rescue me. My priority was to protect my children."They... two of them had a... sizable sum of money..." Since that money was already in our hands, I thought it would be futile even if they knew.Kenzie completely released her grip and then shoved my head forward abruptly. My body plunged forward, but quick reflexes saved me as I grabbed onto the front seat, steadying myself."What money? How much?" Kenzie seemed very interested."The amount is significant, but I don't know exactly." I played coy with her. After all, everyone was interested in money matters.Of course, Kenzi

The screech of brakes pierced the air, and a gray car halted right in front of me. Simultaneously, a panicked cry sounded from behind me, "Chlo…"Before I could even assess the situation inside the car, it bolted forward."What do you want? Who are you people?" I struggled and shouted.Suddenly, a hand reached out from behind, gripping my neck tightly, and a chilling voice whispered, "Enough."With just those words, I instantly recognized the person. The voice was all too familiar.I steadied my nerves and spoke with feigned calmness, "Kenzie, you've got some nerve, attacking me in broad daylight. It seems like you're really desperate. What? The real largest shareholder of Echelon Group is ATL Empire. I’m just a partner."As you planned, the shares had long been diluted, but unfortunately, not by you, but by ATL Empire.
