"You mean you don't remember what happened in here?" Charlene grabbed Mike's arm, her eyes wide with concern.

Mike frowned, confused. "No..."

"What's got you so upset, Charlene?" he asked gently.

"You don't understand." Her grip on his arm never loosened.

"It's OK. Calm down. It's just the mall."

Charlene opened her mouth but hesitated, trying not to interfere.

"Don't, Char," ReNew whispered from deep within. "Let it play out."

Mike tilted his head. "Cat got your tongue?"

Charlene struggled to hide her inner conflict. "It's just... shouldn't we wait for Maggie?"

"Yeah, where is Ms. Maggie?" Mike scanned the parking lot behind them.

Charlene bit her lip. "I would’ve said something. But I didn’t want to intervene. Hint, hint."

She rolled her eyes in frustration.

"Are you okay?" Mike asked, noticing the shift in her mood.

"I think we’ve lost Maggie," she muttered.

"While you and Mike were otherwise engaged," ReNew chimed in, "I saw Maggie heading toward the entrance of a department store."

Charlene whispered under her breath. "Why didn’t you say something then?"

"It’s the first time you’ve talked comfortably with someone your age. I didn’t want to ruin that. Besides, Maggie’s going to be fine. I have a feeling."

Meanwhile, on the far side of the mall, Maggie stepped onto the walkway leading to the department store. The automatic doors slid open. Inside, something caught her eye.

"Coney Island?" she gasped. "As I live and breathe... I haven’t seen this place in years."

She stepped back off the mat, her heart pounding.

"It can’t be. But... I guess anything’s possible here."

Nostalgia swept over her like a wave. The scents of hot pretzels, corn dogs, and cotton candy filled the air. She could almost hear the call of carnival barkers and the distant melody of carousel music.

Then she saw it—the ferris wheel. The place where she’d met Charlie all those years ago.

"Would he be here?" she whispered, her voice full of hope.

She hurried forward. Then she looked down—and gasped. Her clothes had changed. She now wore her favorite yellow dress, a white sweater with a collar, and black Mary Janes with crisp white socks.

"I haven’t seen this outfit in years," she murmured. "How... how does it still fit?"

She passed a funhouse mirror and saw her reflection.

"Oh my! I’m young again... just like the day I met Charlie. Outfit and all!"

A newspaper caught her eye. The date read: Saturday, July 19th, 1969.

"This is the exact day. The very day I met him... Charlie. Is this really happening?"

Everything was just as she remembered—the vendors, the games, the colors.

And then she saw him.

There he was, manning the ferris wheel. A brown applejack hat and a tan button-down shirt, just like back then.

She got in line, her heart racing.

"Ticket, please," he said, smiling.

Somehow, a ticket had appeared in her hand. She handed it to him.

"Thank you. You here all alone?"

"I’m here with my parents. They’re around here somewhere." She heard herself say the same words she had fifty years ago.

"It’d be a shame if you had to ride alone."

She smiled, nervously. "I wouldn’t be alone if you rode with me."

A bright grin lit up Charlie’s face. "I'd love to accompany you. One moment."

He called over a friend to take his post and opened the gate, ushering her to a seat.

"You’re such a gentleman."

"Well, thank you," he chuckled. "Name’s Charlie."

"Maggie Templeton," she replied.

He made sure the safety bar was secure, then sat beside her, placing a comforting arm around her shoulders. Her cheeks flushed pink. Instant kismet.

As the ferris wheel lifted them, the basket tipped. Charlie instinctively caught her.

She laid her head on his arm, exhaling deeply.

At the top of the wheel, the ride paused. Fireworks burst across the sky. The lights were breathtaking.

Charlie turned to her, eyes full of warmth. He kissed her softly.

Then something shifted in his gaze.

"My Maggie Pie... how did I get here?"

She smiled through tears. "My Charlie Bear... it doesn’t matter. We’re together."

"I’m not supposed to be here," he whispered. "I’ve moved on."

"I know, my love. But I’m grateful we had this moment."

The ride descended slowly. They were back at the platform.

Charlie helped her out of the seat. He held her hands.

"My life with you was the best part of my journey. Thank you, my beloved."

He brought her hands to his heart.

Maggie’s heart soared. "Oh Charlie Bear, I’ll be with you soon."

Charlie began to fade gently, like mist in the sun.

Suddenly, Argun appeared, unleashing Ariel. Her majestic wings stretched wide as she soared above the pier, landing beside Maggie.

Charlene and Mike came running down the pier.

A glowing white light bathed the area in brilliance. Ariel looked at Maggie and then toward the light.

Charlene reached her. "We couldn’t let you leave without saying goodbye."

"You too," Maggie smiled. "It’s strange... but I feel like I’m going home."

They embraced in a warm, tearful group hug.

"You deserve this, Maggie."

"It’s time to go be with your Charlie," Charlene added.

Ariel brushed against Maggie with her plush, white fur. Maggie looked into the angel’s deep blue eyes. Peace radiated from them.

She knew.

It was time.

Maggie followed Ariel into the light. She turned back to wave—then vanished.

A moment passed. The scent of hot dogs wafted through the air.

"Do you smell hot dogs?" Charlie teased, poking Mike’s ribs.

Charlene’s heart ached. "One down... one to go."

"I know," ReNew whispered. "But you can do this. I’m proud of you, Char."

Charlene wiped her tears and stood tall.

"Tell you what, Mike. Let’s head back to the mall. Hit the arcade. Have some fun. Then... we’ll take it from there."

Mike grinned. "Sounds like a plan."

Charlene took off running.

"I’ll race you!"

"Cheater! That’s not fair!" Mike laughed as he chased her, the sound of hope echoing through the mall.

  • Beyond Fate   Secrets revealed

As a child, whenever Charlene misbehaved, she would slide under the bed to hide from her father—Seth, the strict disciplinarian of the household. She believed the shadows would protect her, wrapping around her like a second skin. One time, Seth searched the entire house for hours, his voice growing hoarse from shouting her name, frustration bubbling beneath his skin. When he finally dropped to the floor and spotted her curled up beneath the bed like a coiled spring, she clung to the wooden frame with the tenacity of a wildcat. He grunted, trying to drag her out. No use. Charlene wrapped her arms and legs around the slats so tightly he had no choice but to lift one side of the bed and gently shake it. Still, she held firm, eyes fierce and jaw locked. From the doorway, Tamera stood with a fresh cup of coffee, amusement dancing in her eyes. She sipped, savoring the aroma—and the sh

And yet—when she had the chance, her voice cracked, and the truth clung to the back of her throat. "The First Spear came to me in a dream state," she said cautiously, "She told me to tell you about Ottaba... Buddha... Audivon." Seth furrowed his brow. “Do you mean Audubon, Princess?” "Yes! • Beyond Fate   The guard takes over

The Realm was shrouded in an eerie hush—an unnatural stillness that slithered into the bones of every Fate. The skies, once radiant with the dance of light and color, had turned a bruised gray. The orbs—three ancient suns—lingered low, their light dimmed by something more than cloud. It was fear. Fear thick in the air, as if the world itself held its breath. Inside the marble sanctum of the Grand Hall, torches flickered with green flame, casting elongated shadows against the black-stone walls. The banners that once bore the sigil of the Queen—Destiny's gleaming soul spear crossed with the vine of wisdom—had been torn down. In their place, a crimson flag hung limp, the crest of Torrock burned into the fabric: a serpent devouring its own tail. The false symbol of unity. A lie dressed as heritage. Torrock stood behind a long obsidian desk, his gauntleted hand clenched into a fist as he struck the polished stone. “This is your

Seth stood watching his wife. What is this woman doing? he thought. Tamera was scanning the monitor, flipping through recent relays, searching for maps, trying to figure out where they were. All she knew was that they were in a cave... and there was sand everywhere. “Darn it!” she hissed, throwing her hands up in frustration. “Where are we? There’s gotta be some kind of map, some kind of coordinates...” Seth cleared his throat. “Tamera, what are you doing?” “Trying to learn how to work the screen, darling,” she lied—boldly. And he knew it. “In the war room?” he asked with a smirk. “I can help you with anything you need.” “That’s okay.” She forced a brittle smile onto her face. “Why don’t we go into our room?” His voice dropped, low and coaxing. “There are screens in there... and we can have some alone time.”

Ever since last night, Idris had a knot in his stomach he couldn’t untie. “For a human who’s just been in a demon domain,” he muttered under his breath, watching from the shadows of the corridor, “she doesn’t have a single scratch.” Don’t get him wrong—he was beyond relieved that they found Tamera. The woman meant a lot to this family. And he felt sick over what the First Spear had to give up to bring her back. If he could trade his right arm to heal her, he would do it in a heartbeat. But Tamera… something about her just didn’t sit right. The moment he hugged her, it was like holding a mannequin—stiff, unfamiliar. No warmth. No scent of lilac and sandalwood like before. Nobody else seemed to notice, too caught up in their emotions. Overjoyed she was alive, safe, returned to them. He didn’t want to kill the moment with his suspicions, but… He chewed his bottom lip. “How did she survive ou

Seth finally got his morning brew. He turned to pull out a chair, but before he could even take a sip, a hand shot out of nowhere. "Ummm—hot!" Argun winced, snatching the mug like a thief in the night. "Where did you come from?" Seth muttered, rolling his eyes. "Darn portals." Without another word, Argun downed the entire cup in one go. Steam hissed from his lips as he exhaled. "Aaah. Tasty." He slammed the empty mug down in approval. Seth blinked in disbelief. "Dude, really? Want another?" Just then, Charlene and ReNew entered the kitchen. The energy shifted instantly. Argun, without turning, spoke quietly. "Hello, little one." Shame still lingered in his voice—from the last time they’d met, when he obeyed Destiny’s command and left Charlene to fend for herself. "Argun!" Charlene ran full-force and hugged him from behind. A faint smile cracked across his face. "There’s no time for a reunion," he said, the light in his expression fading. "The First Spear needs our help."

He paused, noticing her unease. "Is everything okay?" "Yes and no," she replied softly, settling on the foot of his bed. She crossed her legs, smoothing the folds of her robes, buying herself time to choose her words. Turning her head slightly away, she spoke. "How attached are you to that?" She didn’t turn back around—she just waited. Seth, half-awake, instinctively twirled the chain around his neck, fingers brushing over the rings. “Oh—this? You mean the rings? Well…” His cheeks colored. He hadn't realized she’d noticed how often he fidgeted with it. "Attached? I guess… since Tamera’s been missing, I’ve just… I keep it close. It reminds me of her." His voice dropped as he looked down at the necklace, then back up. “Grandmother… what is this about?” "Do you mind if I hold it for a while?" she asked gently. “I p

"When we were younger, Seth and I used to play in these caves. One day, we stumbled across this whirlpool," Idris explained, standing above the dark swirling pool of water. He nudged a few loose pebbles over the edge with his foot. "Plop." The pebbles were immediately pulled under. "Well?" Idris asked, hands on his hips. "Well what, Uncle Idris?" Charlene blinked, confused. "Who's going in first?" he grinned. Seth rolled his eyes. "Seriously, Idris? Bro, c'mon." "What? It was your idea!" Charlene stepped closer. "I did say I could see tunnels earlier... maybe I can see them again." "Try now," Seth suggested, kneeling by the edge. Charlene leaned forward, blinking slowly. Her e

The lagoon's exact depth was unknown. Mist drifted upward like soft breath from the cavern’s throat, and warm, damp air clung to their skin. The stone walls wept slowly, glistening with sheets of mineral-rich water that painted them like ancient tapestries. It frizzed Charlene’s hair mercilessly. She caught her reflection in a smooth ripple of obsidian water and groaned inwardly. If only I had my cell phone, she thought. I could check my hair. She tried to smooth down her edges, hoping Issa didn’t notice her stealthy grooming. They walked slowly along the slick stone, boots squishing softly with each step. The cave opened wider the deeper they went, the lagoon stretching endlessly before them like some subterranean sea. Charlene tilted her head. “This isn't a lagoon… It’s a whole underground lake.” Issa paused beside her, glancing around in awe. “It’s beautiful… but eerie. Like the lake’s holding its breath, waiting for somethi

  • Beyond Fate   All new trouble

The First Spear paused at the mouth of the cave, her presence stilling the air. "I sense a disturbance," she said. "You two are needed outside. I recommend handling this yourselves." She turned to go, her tone solemn. "Remember—these Fates are no longer under the Council’s rule. Everything has changed for them. Show grace." A soft blessing: "Be well." And she departed. "Wait, GiGi!" Charlene called after her. "I wanted to ask you something—" A distant voice floated back, almost amused. "We’ll talk later, sweetheart. Go ahead—you’re needed outside. I’ll be back." Seth and Charlene emerged from the cave into chaos. The air was thick with noise—shouts, sobs, and arguments swirling into the sky. Hundreds of Fates were packed tightly together, shoving, yelling, fraying at every edge.

Seth and the First Spear stood there awkwardly, saying nothing at first. The cave echoed with silence, the kind that grew louder with every passing moment. Seth's thoughts spun like a storm. Where do I start? I have so many questions. “Start anywhere,” she said gently. “I’ll answer your questions.” He blinked. “That’s right—you can read minds.” “Absolutely right. And emotions, just like you and Charlene.” Her tone was soft, steady, trying to ease the tension she could feel rising in him. She sensed his nerves and didn’t want to make this any harder than it already was. “Walk with me, Seth.” They paced through the cave, the cool air brushing against them like ghosted memories. “Can I just talk plainly to you?” Seth asked, hands shoved in his pockets. “Without all the prestige? Your Majesty and whatnot. All due respect.” “Your daughter certainly does,” she grinned.
