Chapter 6

(Harper’s POV)

I looked at the ring on my finger, and then back round the room. Tommy had the look of fury on his face. Everyone else was smiling and chatting. Colton was running his hand up and down my arm, and the sparks were making it hard to think straight.

I was engaged! To Colton Stokes! At any other time this might have been one of those dream come true moments. Hell, this time yesterday I might have thought that this was my dream come true. But now circumstances were different, very different. I took a step away from Colton and shook my head.

“But he rejected me,” I whispered. The Alpha stopped talking and looked directly at me, then I realised my father and the Beta had stopped talking too, and were also looking at me.

“What did you say, Harper?” the Alpha asked, his tone oozing with authority. I couldn’t help but bit on the side of my lip. The Alpha was an intimidating man.

“I said, he rejected me,” I said a little louder and then looked at the floor, although I could still feel the Alpha’s eyes on me. Then I heard him chuckle, and I looked up in shock.

“Oh, don’t you worry my dear,” the Alpha said with a big smile “Young Colton here was a little rash in his actions, but he regrets that now, don’t you young man?”

“Yes Alpha sir, I do,” Colton replied before grabbing my hand in his “And Harper, I am truly sorry and I would like this opportunity to make it up to you and show you how much of a loving husband and mate I can be” his tone was sincere but I knew it was just for show.

“But you rejected me” I said again, more insistently, “So the bond it’s broken, isn’t it?” I looked around at the men in the room.

“My dear child,” the Beta smiled at me, “I was under the impression that while my son was somewhat foolhardy, you didn’t actually accept the rejection.”

I nodded “Yes Beta sir.” The Beta stood up and smiled.

“Well there you have it,” he said “The bond is still alive, and as long as you complete the mate bond by the third full moon then the rejection will be a silly mistake of the past,” he clapped Colton on the back and then leaned over and kissed my forehead, “And please call me Eric, we are family now.”

“Wait, are you saying that you are expecting her to complete the bond and tie herself to this jerk for the rest of her life? And all within three months?” Tommy shouted, “Darren, really are you going to allow this?” My dad glared at Tommy, his face going red, but it was the Alpha that replied.

“Thomas, I understand your concerns, and admire your guardianship of your niece. But I assure you that the moon goddess wouldn’t have paired her with Colton here if they were not a good match.”

“But you-” Tommy started but my father interrupted him.

“Tommy, that’s enough,” he snapped. “If you don’t have anything productive to say, then you can just leave” Tommy stared at my father in disbelief before muttering something under his breath. He stalked over and pulled me into a hug.

“I’m sorry, kid,” he said and then looked at Colton and pointed a finger at him, “I’m watching you, very closely,” and then he threw a nasty look at my father and stormed out of the room.

I watched him go and felt like I had lost my only ally. He had literally thrown me to the wolves. It was the Alpha who spoke next, shocking me out of my death stare with the door.

“Well, I think we should give the new couple a little bit of privacy,” he said “I hear there is cake!” and then he headed round the desk and shook hands with Colton and kissed my cheek. I was shocked to hear Colton growl, and there was something about it that caused a flutter in my stomach. He had just growled at his Alpha for getting too close to me. The Alpha just chuckled in response.

“Nice healthy wolf there, boy,” he said and chuckled again before heading out of the door, followed by the beta who was frowning at Colton and finally my father.

The door closed, and we were alone. I suddenly felt extremely nervous. I looked at Colton and saw that he was staring at me, his eyes almost completely gold. I didn’t know what emotion he was feeling, but our eyes only switch out to wolf when there is some strong emotion present. And a wolf’s eye colour is a mark of rank. I had silver eyes, but when Colton and I completed the mate bond, my eyes would likely turn gold like all high ranked.

Then it hit me when Colton and I completed the mate bond. Oh crap! I was going to be mated. I started to feel sick and felt like I needed to sit down again. Colton must have noticed, because he took my elbow and guided me to the chair behind me. He kneeled down in front of me and looked at me with concern.

“Hey Strawberries,” he said, moving my hair to one side in a tender gesture “Breathe,” and he began to run his thumb in circles on my hand, like he had last night. I started to feel the panic attack that was forming subside, and he smiled. Last night! Last night when we had slept together, and then he rejected me! But now he was here, and I had a ring on my finger. The anger hit me like a wall and I jumped out of the chair away from him.

“You bastard!” I hissed at him, “How dare you?” he stood up, an amused look on his face, and started to move slowly towards me as I backed up.

“You rejected me!” I yelled, “You didn’t just reject me, you humiliated me!”

He glanced at the door and hissed, “keep it down!”

I knew that no matter how loud I shouted, the office was soundproofed, which I always found strange, but my dad said that it kept sound out as well as in. I didn’t tell Colton that, though.

“What’s wrong Colton,” I raised my voice, and he lost the amused look “don’t you want everyone to know how you fucked me and then broke me.”

“I mean it Strawberries, you do not want to see me angry, he had gotten closer and suddenly felt so much more bigger.

“And then you come in here and decide that you made a mistake. What am I good enough to settle down with now, or did daddy tell you off?”

“Harper,” I am warning you,” he growled.

“Maybe I should just accept your rejection right now and break the bond for good,”

He went very still. All emotion disappeared from his face, but pure gold surrounded the black centre of his eyes. His powerful beta aura blasted into me, sending my body cold.

“Bite your tongue little one, else I do it for you” his words held a promise that had me shivering in fear. I should have stopped there, but of course I didn’t. I stood straight and glared at him.

“I Harper Kirby acknow-” my words were cut off as I was pushed against the wall and his lips smashed onto mine. I tried to push him away, but his hands grabbed mine and pinned them above my head into one hand. He kissed me hard enough that I was sure my lips would be bruised. I stayed unmoving, not kissing him back despite everything inside me wanting to. I could feel the damaged mate bond and the overwhelming need to fix it.

Colton growled into my mouth, and his free hand ran down my body and landed on my ass before squeezing hard. I gasped, and that gave him access for his tongue to slip in and explore my mouth. My walls broke, and I found myself kissing him back, all the need and lust rushing to the surface and washing over me. Colton let go of my hands and I wrapped them around his neck, and he lifted me and pulled me hard against his body. I wrapped my legs around his waist and he groaned and grinded into me. He moved over to my father’s desk and sat me on the edge. My whole body reacted to him, as I remembered the last night and the way our bodies melded together perfectly. The thoughts ignited a fire down below and I could feel myself getting damp. Colton groaned as the scent of my arousal surrounded us.

Colton wrapped his hand in my hair, and I cried out as he yanked my head back, breaking the kiss.

“Now listen here carefully Strawberries,” he growled against my ear as he nipped at my neck behind my ear, “You belong to me, you have always belonged to me, and you always will belong to me, you are MINE!” I gasped as he snarled that last word sending shivers down my body.

And so help me, goddess,” he growled.’’ If you ever try to pull a stunt like that ever again, I will mate you and mark you right where you stand. My body reacted to the promise of the mark and I couldn’t help the moan that slipped out as his teeth grazed the very spot that he was to put his mark on me. Even Maia, my wolf, who had been silent since last night, suddenly made an appearance and yapped at the feel of him so close to me.

“Do you understand?” he growled, yanking my hair again, exposing my throat in submission, and brought my attention back to his question. His eyes pure gold, and his dominance played in overdrive, emphasising his anger. I involuntarily whimpered against the look in his eyes, but nodded.

“Y-yes Colton,” I stuttered, and he smirked in approval.

Suddenly his eyes bled back to their mostly hazel with the gold flecks, and his face rested into a flirty smile. He let go of my hair and hooked his finger under my chin, tilting it upwards.

“Good girl,” he cooed before brushing his lips gently against mine before pulling away. He smiled at me again, as if the past few minutes of aggression had never happened.

“Come on baby girl,” he cooed “Let’s go get some cake.” He lifted me off the table and slipped his hand into mine, lacing our fingers together and pulling me towards the door and out of the office to our waiting families, and cake. Well, at least there’s cake.

(Harper’s POV) Everyone looked up as we walked into the dining kitchen. My mum’s eyes zero’d in on Colton’s hand wrapped around mine and grinned. I was thankful to see that Tommy hadn’t left the house and was sitting in the corner of the room. He was glaring at Colton as soon as we walked into the room, but had refused to meet my eyes. The Alpha stood up and smiled “Here they are,” he said cheerfully “Come take a seat my dear, it is your birthday after all,” and then he held his chair out for me. Before I could sit down, though, Colton slid into the seat and then I let out a surprised yelp and he pulled me down onto his knee. He wrapped his arms around my stomach and gently kissed my shoulder before looking around at everyone. “I thought I would save a seat for someone else,” h

If I moved, then I would have to pack and once I had packed then…I didn’t want to move to the pack house; I had lived here in this house my whole life. Even when I go to University in September, it will be a local one so that I can drive home every night and sleep in my bed.“Harper sweetie” I looked at Louise, who had kneeled down beside me and was rubbing my back. “We should get started on some packing” I shook my head.“I don’t want to,” I said, fresh tears welling up in my eyes and Louise pulled me into a hug.“I know sweetie, I hate to say it but I don’t think you have any choice right now” she pulled away and smiled “but plus side, we’ll be living together,” and I smiled back and nodded my head. (Harper’s POV)Driving up towards the pack house felt a lot more daunting than it did 24 hours ago. It’s hard to think that this time yesterday I was so excited for the ball and finding my mate. And since then so much has happened. The house wasn’t lit up like last night, most of it was dark. This gave it an eerie feeling. As we drove over, Louise explained the basic layout. The ground floor was where the great hall was, as well as a pack common area and a couple of spare offices. The 1st floor was all the main offices and where the majority of the pack businesses were run from, then the 2nd floor had the entertainment centre and gym which was strictly for named and high ranked as well as important visiting guests, who also stayed on the 2nd floor. Third floor was shared by the Beta and Gamma families and top

Did I just hear Colton tell me I wasn’t allowed to go to university?“I said no!” he growled, “and that’s final.”“Whoa!” Louise exclaimed “She’s your mate, not your property, and she has been working for this for years” She was getting angry, and so was Colton. The pressure of being sat between the two was almost unbearable.“If you are worried about me going away, then I got accepted at Leeds University, it’s only an hour drive from here and I was planning on traveling to and from every day anyway” I smiled at him, hoping to smooth his fury. He just glares at me and tightens his hand on my thigh until his fingers dig in and I wince with the pain. He leans in close to me as I feel tears line my eyes.“I said no!” he said slowly over pronouncing every

(Harper’s POV)It was 2am before I finally passed out from exhaustion. Louise had ended up staying with me all night as I screamed and cried in pain. At one point she had gone storming down to Colton’s room, but it was empty.Eventually Louise had called Beta Stokes, who I remember briefly glaring at me in disgust before storming out again. Mrs Stokes assured me that it was Colton he was angry at, not me. Doctor Roberts arrived after that and injected something into me. The pain was still there, but it was like I didn’t care about it anymore. That was when I was able to pass out into blissful unconsciousness. The next morning, I was woken by a knock at the bedroom door. I stumbled over to answer and found Louise on the other side. She had slipped out an hour or so ago to get ready for school. I pulled her into the room quickly, not wanting to see anyone.“Give m

(Harper’s POV)The ride to school was uncomfortable. I could tell that Louise wanted to say something. Most likely about the way that I was acting with Colton. We made it almost the whole way before Louise finally broke the silence.“I’m sorry!” she burst out. Here we go, I thought.“What the hell Harper?” She glanced at me briefly before returning her eyes to the road.“Please don’t Louise,” I pleaded. I really didn’t want to get into an argument on the patriarchy with Louise, certainly not when I felt as crappy as I did right now.“Harper, how can you forgive him so easily?” she said, “Last night you were in so much pain that you practically had to be sedated, and all because he couldn’t keep it in his pants and cheated on you,”“Well, I mean, technically nobody knows we are even together yet. So does it coun

(Harper’s POV)Katie gasped, and Louise had a disgusted look on her face. I glanced at the ring and felt sick. Colton had not only commanded me so easily, I didn’t even know he had done it. Could I really trust him if he could hold that much power over me and use it so easily?I didn’t have too much longer to think about it as the gratingly high pitched voice of Donna floated into the room, and she and her vapid fangirls walked in. She was ranting about the rumour and was declaring loudly that she would find the girl, although she didn’t use that term, and would make sure she disappeared for good. Donna was your typical bleached blond hair and fake tanned stereotyped mean girl that you saw in all the teen movies. Her father was the business manager for the pack and that afforded them a higher ranking among the pack, but everyone knew that wasn’t enough for the spiteful, self proclaim

They soon dispersed, and as soon as the block disappeared, Louise and Katie ran to me. I was trying to clear the blood that was pouring from a gash in my head out of my eyes, but it wasn’t slowing. Louise pulled her jumper off and placed it over my head. My wolf was weak right now, so she wasn’t able to heal me as quickly as she normally would. The Beta got to me and took the jumper from Louise and looked under and hissed. He then smiled at me “Just a scratch” I grinned, feeling a little woozy“I’m not sure I believe you on that,” I said, and then covered my mouth with my hand.

(Harper’s POV)The next few days seemed filled with so much activity. Elias and I announced that we had completed the mate bond, and for the most part, people seemed happy. But I noticed both Drake and Tommy sharing a look that I tried to question later with Tommy. He continued to be evasive with me the whole time, but insisted that he was happy for us. Elias said that maybe I was imagining it, but I was sure there was something that they weren’t telling me.The Council swept into town for debriefing everyone after the battle. Elias was cleared of any suspicion and we heard that the sovereign had ordered a full sweep of every member of the Council to weed out any more Circle members. In private, Drake confirmed that he was in fact the Divine Warrior for the Immortal line and he, Harry and Aaron spent many hours poured over texts about the two

(Harper’s POV)The battle seemed to dissipate after I killed Nathaniel. I didn’t know if seeing me slaughter their feared leader with the angel blade scared them or if it was just good timing, but there was no more fighting. I looked around to see the courtyard, a mess of dead and wounded.“Harper?” I turned to see Tommy looking at me in disbelief.“Hey,” I said and shrugged. (Harper’s POV)My eyes flew open as I woke up in the cells. I sat up and looked around, allowing my eyes to adjust to the low light after the brightness of the Neverplain. I looked down to see the angel blade still in my stomach. I inclined my head at it curiously. Was I meant to pull it out myself? Everything was beginning to blur for me. The Neverplain and my angel and the visit from Drake. Did Drake really visit? Or was that just my perverted imagination putting him there? And was he really also a Divine Warrior? There were a million questions running through my mind, some repeated, some serious, some stupid. It was like my mind was in overdrive and I couldn’t focus on one thing.I heard a chuckle to one side of me and looked towards the source.“Hello darling,” Marcus said from his perch

(Drake’s POV)I looked down at the werewolf in front of me in sympathy. I had heard many things about Elias Owens. I knew his family were allies of the order and also knew they had been ripped apart by the destructive Circle twenty or so years back. I even remembered Owen’s brief time at the Council. He had disappeared one night and then a couple of days later, I heard about the attack on his pack. I had no idea that he had a demon bloodline in him. He had hidden it well. And now here he was, cradling his dead lover. The sweet Harper. The beautiful woman who had risen in the ranks of the warriors with ease over the years. I was unsurprised by her progress as I watched her. I could tell at first sight who she was, or what she was. Her ethereal glow was unmistakable and would be recognised by others of our kind. I was almost surprised that she didn&rs

Harper. My beautiful mate was dead. I felt like I couldn’t breathe all over again as a single tear slipped down my cheek. The rage followed and with it the stirring of the demon inside me.“Kill,” it said. The guttural voice felt raw with hatred. I agreed with what he said. I had to find Nathaniel and rip him apart limb from limb. I would scatter his remains across the town and the ground would be soaked with his blood. I would make him

I tried to fight, but I heard Nathaniel instruct them to drag me back to the pack house. I was thrown into the Alpha’s office as Nathaniel strode in, instructing various warriors to surround the house and be on guard. Louise was in the corner crying, her makeup streaming down her face. I glanced over and she looked up at me. Despite all the hatred, all that I had done to her, I knew that in this moment we were both mourning someone we loved. I saw that acknowledgement in her eyes.Nathaniel sat at the desk and began to speak but he was interrupted by the sound of a mournful howl, one so powerful it could be heard all the way from the cells to where we were now. All I was able to do was to go over the events that had just happened. Finding out that Harper was a member of the Council was a shock. But then she mentioned that name, Nathaniel. There was no way that the man she thought could help me was the same man I had spent so many years hunting for. I stopped struggling against the warriors then.
