The booming voice of the man in his early forties did not shake Mark and Aileen's resolve. Both stood where they were, looking straight into Mr. William's face.
"Good afternoon, Sir. I'm sorry, we didn't mean to make a scene outside your office, but we need to talk to you as soon as possible, so..."
"Tell me here as soon as possible. Or if it takes longer, I'll let Laura listen and take notes. I'm in an important meeting with a client," Mr. William replied quickly.
"Um, actually, we'd like to have a word with your important client, if you'd let us, Sir?”
"What do you mean? And who is this gentleman, Ms. Aileen? Isn't he a new employee in your department, transferred from another branch?" Immediately, Mr. William turned to Aileen, whom he had gotten to know well during his two years of service.
"Uh, this is Mr. Mark Miller, Sir. We have an important matter to discuss with you immediately." Aileen finally replied, summoning all her courage.
She was not afraid of Mr. William. It was just that she had kept her capacity as Marketing Manager to avoid getting into trouble with the Director. So, in many cases, she usually just gave in rather than make an unnecessary fuss.
But, of course, this time was different. Mr. William's sabotage was a form of crime that had to be dealt with immediately. Therefore, all respect for the man she considered her superior was taken away.
William's eyes narrowed. He glanced at Aileen and Mark several times.
"Wait a moment. I'll be back as soon as the business with this client is done."
"Sir-" Mark was about to follow William into his office.
"Mr. Mark! Respect me as your superior, please! I asked you to wait, didn't I? So stay there!" Mr. William snapped loudly and harshly. Even his eyes glared at Mark as if he wanted to push the man who was taller than him.
So he abandoned his intention and went inside, remembering to close the door very firmly.
Unexpectedly, Mark forced his way in, and Aileen somehow felt she had to follow her lead. Laura tried to stop her, but she was no match for Mark.
The door was pushed open, and they found several customers in the room. They all seemed surprised by the sudden incident.
"I'm sorry, Sir. They forced their way in, and I couldn't prevent them..." Laura stammered.
"Take a picture of them!" Mark ordered Aileen quietly. His voice was masked by Laura's stuttered sentence.
Aileen quickly understood and picked up the cell phone that was in the front pocket of the blazer she was wearing. She tried to take several pictures showing the three clients present with Mr. William.
They were arguing with Mark, who was being mediated by Laura, so no one was paying attention to Aileen.
"Is this a meeting to discuss sabotaging company orders?" Mark boldly expressed his accusations to the whole room.
Naturally, William and his three guests looked stunned. They didn't know how to react.
"And who is that, Mr. William?" One of the slick, bald customers asked the Director, looking at Mark suspiciously.
"Oh, it's okay, Sir. Take it easy. He'll be my business. Let's end this meeting, then. We will continue our discussion at another time and perhaps another place." William angrily calmed his clients, who were fidgeting in their seats.
Then, all three got up and moved. William shook their hands, not caring about Mark, Aileen, or Laura.
"I will report this to the CEO. And I hope you will be vigilant if an inspector comes to your company to investigate Mr. William's sabotage case. And please answer all questions honestly because if you don't. Our CEO will know the right way to stop your entire supply of raw materials from any source!” Mark said threateningly.
Suddenly, William's three customers were wide-eyed and astonished by the words of the clerk, who looked like a lowly employee because of his uniform.
William hastily reassured them, "Um, please just ignore the words of this idiot. He's just a new intern here."
Turning to Mark, William shouted at him angrily,
"Shut up! Get out of here, and don't talk nonsense! Wait until the letter of resignation reaches your desk. Do you hear me?"
Mark snorted. Who cared about being fired from his temporary undercover position?
"Whatever you want, Sir. But the one who is about to be fired is none other than you. The one who sabotaged the central mission! The saboteur of the Headquarter order!" Mark accused, pointing to William's face without hesitation.
William seemed to give Laura a code through his eyes, and she ran out of the room. She didn't know what she was going to do. Aileen didn't care. She wanted to join in the condemnation of William, who had kept the headquarters in the dark about the accomplishments of the marketing department under his leadership. How annoying!
The three clients looked confused about whether to leave or stay in the room.
"Well if you'll excuse us, Mr William. This seems to be an internal matter for your company. Please handle it yourself," said one of the guests.
"And please, whatever it is, we have nothing to do with it," added another.
With that, the three men left the room, leaving William to face Mark with Aileen behind him.
"Oh shit! Who are you, huh? Henchmen of the headquarters, huh? Admit it!" William snapped, slamming his hand down on the desk.
Mark just smiled sarcastically, not wanting to answer anything that would reveal his identity before the appointed time.
"I'm the new intern, Sir. Just like you said," Mark replied simply.
"Tell me, Miss Aileen. Is she a central minion sent to investigate my performance?" William turned to question Aileen in an urgent tone.
"Does it matter, Sir? What's more important to me right now is uncovering a case of corporate sabotage that seems to have been carried out by the Director himself!" Aileen snapped, no longer having the slightest reluctance towards the man in front of her.
William Dawson was now nothing more than a sabotaging scoundrel who had kept her from being promoted when she should have qualified a few months ago. Damn right!
Suddenly, the door burst open again, and four tall, muscular men immediately ambushed Mark and Aileen.
"Stay where you are, or you'll regret it!"
"Oh my God, Mr. William. Would you take your employees hostage? Isn't that wrong?" asked Mark calmly, despite two thugs grabbing his hands from behind."Don't patronize me about what is or isn't wrong for me to do! Now tell me who you are!" scolded Mr William as he looked at Mark from head to toe.Mark seemed to struggle with whether to confess now or later."Let me introduce myself, Mr. William. I am Mark Miller, a representative of the audit team from Headquarters," Mark said in an arrogant tone.Suddenly, every other pair of eyes in the room widened in surprise. One of the shocked thugs almost lost control of Mark's hand, and Mark almost managed to duck out of the way before the other attacked Mark's lungs from behind, knocking him off balance.William was now in complete shock. His mouth was suddenly stiff, and he was unable to speak. There was a few moments of silence before Mark's voice finally returned,"So please cooperate, Sir. First of all, tell these people to let us go," M
"Oh, God! Nowhere, huh?"Aileen gasped in shock. The hopes that had just soared were now dashed to the ground."Shit! Why did they take my phone?" screamed Mark, sounding very annoyed.Aileen rolled her eyes in disgust."Of course they did. It's an unwritten rule of siege procedure. Disarming the victim and their communication devices is the most important thing they have to do," Aileen said in an annoyed tone.Mark snorted quietly. He was very annoyed by this fact."Oh, I hope the cell phone wasn't turned off so the central team can find out where we are now. They'll still be able to find the last place the phone was before it went off."Aileen decided to give up hope for now. She was now focused on thinking of ways to break free of the restraints and escape the room."Can you crush this chair and make a pointy end to hang our ropes from?" Aileen offered her opinion.Suddenly, Mark thought about such a method. It seems possible, he thought. Then, he struggled to move from his positio
"Aileen!"Mark gasped in surprise.Who would have thought that the girl would be so desperate to protect herself? Oh God!Aileen crouched in front of Mark, gasping for air.Strangely, in the pain that seemed to crush the bones in her shoulders and back where the chair had hit, the only thing that stuck in her mind was Mark's scream calling her Aileen. Without the usual 'Ma'am'. Was it wrong that it sounded so nice to her ears?"Are you okay?" Mark, who was frantically questioning Aileen, checked the condition of the girl in front of him. Then he shifted his position and blocked Aileen from William, who approached them again, even though he no longer had a chair with him. At least the man didn't look like he was going to attack again.Aileen seemed to nod despite the excruciating pain in one shoulder. She was strong enough to bear the pain. Participating in taekwondo activities during high school and college was enough to keep her trained now. Although it had been a long time since she
Three thugs were left behind, overpowered by Mark. Alone, armed, and with a body that was also strong under his suit. If Aileen had seen Mark's skill in dodging and counterattacking his opponents, her admiration for him would have increased dramatically.Unfortunately, the girl was in a race against time herself, and her breathing was ragged. She was unable to stop her steps to take a deep breath. The soles of her feet hurt from the many sharp pebbles and bushes along the way, as it seemed to be a forest area in the middle of nowhere.Aileen, who was just a newcomer and had to work every day as soon as she arrived in the city, needed more time to get to know many other areas outside the city center, which offered everything she needed with complete availability, except, of course, vacations. Yes, come to think of it, she had rarely taken a vacation in the past year. And even when she did, she used it to return to her hometown.Behind her, the sound of running feet came closer. Oh God!
Meanwhile, in the empty building where Mark and Aileen had been held, Mark was left behind, trying his best to knock down one thug after another who had ganged up on him. It was hard; he was knocked down several times while trying to attack one, but he was caught from behind by the other. Damn it!"Aaarrggh!"He groaned in pain several times, though he tried to hold it in, not wanting to be humiliated. The situation was made worse by the presence of William, who immediately pulled his gun from his pocket. The saboteur was not fooling around. He had a gun, but he was probably still reluctant to use it on Aileen."Two principled people!" William shouted angrily. His voice was that of a wounded lion. He must have been afraid that Aileen, who managed to escape, would expose everything.Ah, at least Aileen is safe, Mark thought as he didn't see any of the thugs who had chased Aileen earlier return with the girl. He had to put his hands up because he didn't want to be shot by William, who w
Mark searched the forest for Aileen's tracks. But it took work to find tracks anywhere. Especially when it was already night, and there was no light in the forest except the headlights of his car.Feeling that he would find nothing, Mark drove the car to the paved road he saw after leaving the forest area. From there, he searched for the nearest police station. For some reason, he was sure he would find Aileen there. When he found the first police station, it was closed. Still, there was an officer on duty, and Mark saw that a woman was writing a report in front of the officer. Aileen!Since it was closed, the officer on duty was only working on Aileen's report in the glass front room that Mark could see from outside. He got out of the car immediately and walked with a slight limp toward the girl who had been occupying his mind. It was a relief to see Aileen in good shape. He don't know how she survived.Aileen and the guard looked up as they saw a car pull into the yard. And Aileen ev
"All right, sorry," Aileen said and rolled her eyes. It didn't feel good when they were arguing."But can I trade it for yours?" Aileen asked later when she saw a bowl of beef soup in front of Mark with an aroma that was quite tasty.Mark gave Aileen a quick look and exchanged their menu, which were both untouched. With a smile, Aileen finally enjoyed her food and ate until it was clean. Meanwhile, Mark did the same, although it took longer because his lips were injured and his jaw hurt from chewing. He even thought he might have a crack.Fortunately, when he returned and the X-rays came out, the results were all good. There were no internal injuries—just abrasions and bruises, which should disappear with a simple antiseptic."Where is your address?" Aileen asked later, once she was back behind the wheel.Mark grimaced in amusement. "To your house. I'll drive you home from there," Mark replied with an assertiveness that could not be denied.Aileen did not refuse. She was indeed very ti
Mark coughed. "Damn it! Telling me to rest, but asking for a full report tomorrow! That's crazy! The Marketing Manager needs a break as well. She's locked up with me too, you know! That's too bad. I'll only be able to send the email in two days," Mark replied with a snort.Lucas could be so insensitive sometimes! Workaholic, but without any humanity! That's why Mark was sometimes thankful that he wasn't Lucas's sibling. He wouldn't have been able to bear it if he had a character like Lucas's.There was laughter from the other side. Which made Mark even more annoyed."That's it. The important thing is that I ask for it soon. Don't take too long," Lucas concluded as he ended the call he had made to the phone in Mark's apartment because his cell phone had been unreachable."Such a mad workaholic!" grumbled Mark as he went back to compressing the bruises on his face. His face was reflected in the glass of the closet before him. "Oh dear! It's swollen again." He grumbled to himself. Annoye
