The dreams were back again. This time they came at her more intensely than they had been the last few times she had had them. What the hell was this about her being dressed in ancient regalia?
This time, she saw herself dancing and turning around in a cave that was covered with relics. She looked completely different from her normal self. It looked like her soul had left her body and possessed the body of a stranger. A powerful stranger at that because she could feel the energy as it seeped through her veins.
Summer kept thinking about it all day; she sat by the table lost in thoughts; she didn't even notice when it was time to take her bath.
The soft knock on her door and the sound of the door opening were what signaled to her that Hilda had come in. She had a big kettle in her hand.
"Ready to take a bath, ma'am?" Hilda asked her with a smile on her lips, but Summer was silent. Hilda noticed this and was puzzled. It was unlike Summer to be completely silent. She probably didn't even hear her when she had spoken.
"My lady?" Hilda called again.
"Just get the bath ready, Hilda," she muttered without even looking in Hilda's direction. Hilda nodded her head and quietly walked to the bathroom to prepare the bath.
The soft fragrance of lavender oils mixed with the unique fragrance that came from her lush bath filtered through the air. It was enough enticement to go and have her bath, and Summer, at that moment, decided that she was done contemplating the dream since she didn't know what it meant or what significance it held.
It was probably only a dream, except that it was reoccurring too much.
That was the part she didn't like and honestly couldn't understand.
Summer let out a sigh as she stood up from her seat and allowed her long, flowy dress to fall freely to the floor before she stepped over it and headed to the bathroom.
Moments later, when she was done bathing, she stepped out of the tub and allowed the water to drop on the floor as her beautiful toes touched the ground.
"Grab me a garment, Hilda, will you?" She requested without looking as she walked out of the bathroom stark naked. She walked out to see, to her dismay, that Dominic was standing tall and confidently in her room.
Her eyes widened as she realized that she was naked. Luckily for her, he had his back turned away from her direction as he seemed to be staring at something in her wardrobe, and she quickly ran back into the stall before he turned to see her.
"What are you doing in my room?!" She asked; she was already riled up and irritated.
How could he come into her room at a time like that?
And why the hell did Hilda not inform her that they had company?!
"How did you sleep last night?" Dominic's voice echoed. He completely ignored her question and her seeming outburst.
Summer cursed under her breath as she looked around the stall in search of something—anything at all—to cover herself with.
Soon, Hilda appeared in the bathroom with a long robe dress in hand. She eyed her apologetically as she assisted her in putting on the robe.
Summer let out an eye roll as she covered her body with the dress before she walked out of the bathroom, confident again.
"You haven't answered my question." She demanded with her head held high. Dominic turned to look at her. He allowed his eyes to run through her entire body, from her feet to her face, before finally settling on her eyes. He had a small smile on his lips, and it made Summer wonder whether he had seen her nakedness before she had the time to scamper to safety. She was sure he didn't turn to look at her, but she didn't know. He was after all a lycan, and there was only so little she knew about his capabilities.
"What was your question?" He asked her as he stared deep into her eyes, searching. For something she didn't know. She hated that he looked at her so fondly.
He was supposed to address her with honorifics. Not staring at her like they had known each other for years when in the actual sense he had been an enemy to her pack. She let out an eye roll at his forwardness as she looked away from him and simply kept silent.
Dominic soon let out a breath as he clasped his two hands behind him and walked to where she stood, glaring at him. Her hair was still wet from her bath, and he could see the little beads of water rolling from her neck down to the V-shaped opening that led to her breasts. He eyed her for a few seconds, though he didn't make that evident. He already knew she hated his guts.
"I was wondering if you would love to have dinner with me." He said to her, and she eyed him.
"Dinner?" She asked him in disbelief.
"Yeah," he responded and proceeded to explain. "I'm hosting a few friends for dinner. I have ordered the pack servants to get everything ready—the wines and the steak. I just want to have you eat with us at the table as well." He said as he continued to watch her to gauge her reaction.
Summer stared at him for a few seconds before she looked away with a scoff.
He was unbelievable; her subconscious rolled her eyes at him.
"I'm not hungry, and I am not having any dinner with you." She said to him and walked towards her wardrobe.
Dominic's eyes followed her, and he turned in the direction that she was headed.
"It's not something elaborate," he said, explaining. "It's just...I would want-"
"The answer is no!" She yelled, cutting him off. "Enjoy your steak." She added.
Hilda's eyes were as large as saucers. She couldn't believe that the Lycan king would be this disrespectful and constant.
She was honestly beginning to fear for Summer. She may be going too far and pushing her limits. She hated to think of what the Lycan king could do to her. What he had done to his past subordinates who had disrespected him in ways far more tolerable than what Summer was doing presently.
Dominic was silent, then he spoke after a beat.
"This was supposed to be a polite invitation," he said as he clenched his fists to hold back his restrained anger. "But you have left me with no other choice than to demand it." He said to her.
Summer let out another scoff.
"And here I thought I was being respected." She muttered sarcastically.
"You were," he maintained.
"I am not." She argued. "If this was a request, you sure would have taken my no for an answer. But here you are, commanding me to obey your demand just like the narcissist that you are." She spat and immediately regretted the words the moment they left her lips.
She saw the hurt that registered briefly in his eyes before he masked them with a stoic and unreadable expression.
It wasn't as if he was a narcissist; he wasn't at all. But the strange urge she had to hurt his feelings, just because her ego was bruised and she knew that she was left with no choice but to obey his demand, was what made her lash out at him.
"Dress elegantly," he said to her. The smile that was on his face earlier on had disappeared and was now replaced by a scowl. "There will be dignitaries present." He said and walked away.
Summer knew she was the one to blame for his change of mood. She felt bad but she managed to force the guilt that gnawed at her conscience down to the bottom of her thoughts.
She let out a huff and turned to see that Hilda was still standing there and watching her.
"What?" She snapped at her.
"M-my lady," Hilda stuttered out, not knowing how to say this in a polite manner. "D-don't you think you were rude to the Lycan king?" She asked, oh so politely, and Summer glared at her.
Who's side was she on in this?
"I can speak any way I like to whomever!" She maintained, and Hilda immediately nodded her head.
"I understand that, but considering his status and who he represents," she was saying. "I think for your safety you should water down on your approach towards him. He was only being nice to you." She said.
Who knew what he could decide to do when he no longer wanted to be nice anymore? Hilda thought in her heart.
Summer ran her fingers through her hair in evident frustration.
Of course, what was she expecting? She would be loyal only to her king.
"Leave me alone." She suddenly said.
"Sorry?" Hilda asked, confused.
"Leave this instant!" She yelled. "I can dress myself up." She claimed.
Summer sat in front of the fancy makeup table, her fingers nervously tracing the patterns on the shiny wood as she looked at her reflection. She couldn't stop thinking about her recent argument with Dominic, each harsh word and piercing look replaying in her mind like a tense movie scene. Hilda's warnings echoed in her head, bothering her like an annoying itch. Was she being reckless? Was this her only way to show she was independent when she felt so powerless? The deep green dress she chose for dinner hugged her curves and swept the floor, reminding her of the confidence she had before getting tangled in the tricky world of politics. She sighed and pushed her damp hair back, still smelling faintly of lavender from her bath. Taking a deep breath, she stared into her own eyes, searching for the strength she desperately needed."I won't let anyone control me," she whispered, feeling a rush of determination. After getting ready, excitement surged through her. Would tonight's dinner be a
The guests at the fancy dinner kept chatting and clinking glasses, creating a lively but tense atmosphere. Summer was lost in thought, her heart racing as she tried to handle her tricky situation. Just as she began to understand the conversations around her, a shift in the mood caught her attention.Dominic had taken his seat at the head of the table, scanning the room to ensure the earlier tensions had eased. Summer could feel his strong presence beside her, commanding respect and stirring her curiosity and inner conflict. As she tried to shift her thoughts, a new person entered the dining hall, drawing everyone's attention at once.Jessica made a grand entrance that matched her bold personality. Dressed in a stunning gown that sparkled in the soft light, highlighting her figure, her laughter cut through the quiet conversations. She confidently crossed the room, her eyes gleaming with mischief.Elara's face brightened when she saw her friend approaching. "Hey, Jessica! Right on time!
Summer walked back to her room with slow, deliberate steps, her heart and mind waging a silent war.Half of her was still caught up in the sensation of Dominic's words, the warmth of his smile, and the way his gaze lingered just a little longer than it should have. But the other half? That side of her was seething, berating her for letting any of it get to her.'He's just a smooth talker,' she reminded herself. A manipulator. She couldn't afford to trust him or anyone in this kingdom. Not when her fate was still so uncertain. The door to her chamber creaked as she pushed it open, letting the silence of the room envelop her.She quickly removed her emerald dress, hanging it on the ornate wooden rack by the wall, and slipped into something more comfortable—a simple nightgown. Her fingers absently toyed with the fabric as she sat on the edge of the bed, staring out of the window at the dark, moonlit sky.A light knock came from the door. "My lady," Hilda's voice called from outside. "Do
Summer stormed into Dominic's study, her fists clenched at her sides. Dominic, seated at his desk, barely glanced up from the document he was reading."Summer," he acknowledged coolly. "What brings you here so early?"She didn't bother with pleasantries. "Why is there a guard following me?"Dominic raised an eyebrow and finally looked up. "For your protection.""Protection?" Summer scoffed. "I'm a prisoner here, Dominic. Who do you think you're protecting me from? It's not like I can leave."Dominic leaned back in his chair, folding his arms across his chest. "You tried to escape once. Did you think I'd just let you wander freely after that?""I wasn't trying to escape," she snapped. "I wanted to get some air, to think. And now, everywhere I go, there's someone watching me. I can't even breathe without feeling like I'm being spied on."Dominic's expression didn't change. "That's the point. You're not trusted yet, Summer. You're here because I allow it, not because you have some right
Summer stared at Dominic, disbelief clouding her thoughts. "You really want me to leave?" Her voice was laced with frustration. "After everything, you've been hell-bent on keeping me here, and now you're just going to let me walk out?"Dominic's expression was unreadable as he leaned against his desk, arms folded across his chest. "It's your choice, Summer. I'm not going to force you to stay if you don't want to be here.""Since when?" she shot back. "Since when do you care about what I want? You've kept me in this kingdom like a prisoner, and now you suddenly don't care if I leave?""If you leave, I won't stop you." His voice was calm, almost too calm as if he were restraining himself. "But you should know that if you walk out of here, you're on your own. I won't protect you anymore."Summer blinked, processing his words. "Protect me from what?" She crossed her arms tightly over her chest. "From who?""From everything out there," he said, his tone clipped. "You're a werewolf in Lycan
Summer paced in her chamber, replaying the moment with Dominic in her mind. Every time she thought about it, the anger flared up inside her again. She couldn't understand how things had spiraled out of control so quickly and how his calm words had turned into something so intense.A kiss? She stopped pacing, running a hand through her hair in frustration. There had been nothing gentle about it, nothing kind. It had been possessive, aggressive—just like him. And yet, there had been something else, something she didn't want to acknowledge. She shook her head, trying to push the thought away. It didn't matter. What mattered now was figuring out how to deal with this situation. She needed answers. With renewed determination, Summer grabbed her cloak and threw it over her shoulders. She needed to speak to Dominic again. Running away wasn't going to solve anything. She wasn't going to let him kiss her and then pretend like nothing had happened. Her heart pounded as she made her way down the
Davina stood by the large windows in Alan's private chambers, watching the moonlight reflect off the distant lake. Her heart raced as she sensed Alan's presence behind her. She could feel his eyes on her as if his gaze alone could set her skin aflame."You've been quiet tonight," Alan's voice broke through the silence, smooth and deep. There was an edge to it—like he was daring her to respond.Davina turned slowly to face him, her lips curling into a soft smile. "What's there to say?" she asked, her voice lilting, but her eyes held a challenge. "You have everything you wanted, don't you?"Alan's eyes narrowed slightly, his jaw tightening. He stepped closer to her, closing the distance between them until she could feel the heat of his body. "What are you implying, Davina?"She tilted her head, her fingers trailing along the surface of the windowsill as if she were contemplating something deeply. "I'm just wondering if rejecting Summer was worth it. You chose me, but are you satisfied?"
Summer stood in the doorway of Dominic's study, her chest rising and falling rapidly as if she had just sprinted through the entire castle. Her lips trembled slightly, and her eyes flickered with a mix of emotions—fear, frustration, and something else Dominic couldn't quite place. He leaned back in his chair, his jaw tightening as he regarded her carefully. "What is it, Summer?" His voice was calm, though there was a clear edge of impatience. She stepped inside, closing the door behind her, as if she were preparing to say something monumental. "I overheard your conversation with Coleman," she began, her voice soft but firm. "You're meeting with the Elders because of me, aren't you?"Dominic's expression darkened slightly, though he didn't immediately answer."I don't understand why you're going through all this trouble," Summer continued, her hands clenching into fists at her sides. "One minute, you're telling me I can leave if I want to, and the next, you're risking everything just t
The morning sun crept over the horizon, casting an ethereal glow across the mansion grounds. Summer's restless night left her weary, but her resolve was stronger than ever. With her suspicions about the Elders confirmed, she knew she had to tread carefully, but every fiber of her being urged her to act. For too long, she'd been caught in the web of others' schemes. It was time to take back control. She rose from her bed, her gaze steady as she assessed her reflection in the mirror. There was a new fire in her eyes, one she hadn't noticed before—a quiet strength that had been forged in the shadows of this world she barely understood. Today would mark the beginning of her own strategy. If Dominic wouldn't let her in, she would find another way to protect him. After dressing in a simple tunic, she left her room and quietly made her way to the library, a place she'd recently started frequenting. It was always empty in the early mornings, allowing her the solitude she needed to sift throug
The silence in the mansion felt heavier the next morning. Summer's heart was still bruised from her encounter with Dominic, and as she sat alone in her room, she realized that waiting for him to come around would only leave her feeling empty. It was time to make a decision for herself. She couldn't shake the feeling that there were pieces of this story—of Dominic, of the Elders, of everything—that she hadn't fully uncovered. Perhaps if she knew more about Dominic's world, she'd finally understand why he pushed her away and why he saw himself as dangerous. But she couldn't do it by staying idle.Summoning her resolve, Summer took a deep breath and left her room. If she wanted answers, she needed to start somewhere, and there was one place that held all the secrets she couldn't ask Dominic directly about—the Elder Council's archives. She made her way down the winding staircase and headed to the back of the mansion, where she had once overheard some guards mention the archives. The guard
The next morning, Summer woke up feeling numb, as though the weight of everything that had transpired the day before had drained all the color from her world. The mansion was eerily quiet, and as she lay in her bed, her thoughts replayed the events over and over again. Gregory and Tesla had left with no word of farewell, their departure felt like the final threads of any semblance of safety in her life had snapped. It was all slipping away from her.She forced herself out of bed and dressed in a simple gown, trying to shake off the lingering tension in her chest. Her stomach was still in knots from the conversation with Dominic, or rather, the way he had shut her out the moment things started to go too far. What had happened between them felt like a cruel joke. She had thought that maybe, just maybe, he was someone who understood her pain, someone who could offer her some peace. But instead, he had pushed her away, leaving her to face the turmoil alone. Her mind wandered back to the m
Morning dawned, casting a soft, golden light over the Lycan pack’s territory. Tesla slipped out of bed and busied herself with preparations to leave, carefully masking the turmoil boiling inside her. Gregory’s conversation from the night before echoed in her mind, a painful reminder of his betrayal. But she was practiced in hiding her emotions, and she chose to keep what she’d overheard to herself, allowing Gregory to believe she was still in the dark.As she packed, Tesla reminded herself of the bigger picture: she had a part to play, and if she was going to protect Summer, she would need to tread carefully. When she was ready, she joined the others, keeping her expression neutral as she passed Gregory in the hallway.---The day moved quickly, and soon, everything was ready for the journey back to their own territory. Summer watched the pack members bidding the foxes farewell, a strange mix of emotions welling up inside her. This place had held so much tension and danger, yet she fel
The sun was high when Elara entered the grand hall, where the elders were gathering for the much-anticipated meeting. The air was heavy with unspoken tension, and she could feel it prickling against her skin. Every elder present carried secrets, some small and others monumental, but all were hidden under layers of authority and tradition. Jessica was already seated beside her father, Elder Kaleb, who wore an expression as unreadable as stone.Elder Simon gave Elara a small nod as she took her seat. It was a subtle gesture, but it hinted at something deeper, something that would raise questions if anyone else noticed. She forced herself to remain neutral, giving nothing away, even as her heart pounded. She could only hope that their hidden relationship wouldn't surface here.Dominic and Coleman were seated further down, each wearing an air of calm confidence that seemed almost out of place. But only Elara knew what Dominic was truly capable of—and the lengths he would go to keep Summer
The following morning, Elara sat at the edge of her bed, watching the first light trickle through her window. She hadn't slept well. Her conversation with Jessica the day before had been unsettling, the feeling that Jessica was on the verge of uncovering her secret simmering beneath her skin. Today, however, she needed a clear mind. The pack's unity depended on subtlety, and she couldn't afford to lose her edge. With a deep breath, she rose, dressed, and left her quarters to confront Jessica. She found her outside the training grounds, overseeing a group of young pack members practicing their forms. Elara approached, making no effort to conceal her presence."Jessica," she called out. The other woman turned, her expression unreadable as she dismissed the trainees with a wave of her hand."Elara. So formal today." Jessica's tone was laced with suspicion, her gaze hard and unwavering.Elara didn't waste time with small talk. "You need to stop meddling in Summer's affairs. The elders wil
The next day, Elara found herself striding across the compound with a purpose that could not be ignored. Her expression was tense, her jaw set with quiet fury. After the previous night's revelations, she knew exactly what needed to be done. She spotted Jessica near the training grounds, her posture casual yet alert as she chatted with a few pack members. Elara approached, her voice slicing through the air like a blade."Jessica," she called, a steely edge to her tone. Jessica turned, a flicker of something unreadable crossing her face as Elara approached."Elara. To what do I owe the pleasure?" Jessica's words dripped with feigned politeness, but her eyes held a spark of defiance.Elara didn't waste time on formalities. "Enough games, Jessica. I know exactly what you've been doing—trying to frame Summer for things you know she didn't do."Jessica's eyes narrowed slightly, though she retained her calm. "Is that so? Funny, coming from you. Last I checked, Summer was the one wrapped up i
Morning broke with a quiet chill, the sky a pale shade of gray as Summer made her way to the kitchens to start her chores. She could sense a shift in the atmosphere, an underlying tension that seemed to settle in the walls, pressing down on her as she moved through the hallways. It felt like a storm was gathering, and she couldn't shake the feeling that somehow, she was at the center of it.Meanwhile, in her chambers, Elara sat at her vanity, fingers drumming thoughtfully against the polished wood. The incident with the necklace had been gnawing at her all night, Jessica's smug attitude still fresh in her mind. She could tell that Jessica was up to her usual tricks, but framing Summer for something she hadn't done? That crossed a line."Jessica," Elara called out, her voice carrying a sharp edge.Moments later, Jessica slipped into the room, her expression carefully neutral, though her eyes sparkled with a trace of mischief. "You wanted to see me, Elara?"Elara met her gaze in the mir
Summer stood by Elara's jewelry table, her fingers lingering over the necklaces she'd been sorting. Jessica's threat hung heavy in her mind, gnawing at her sense of security. She couldn't shake the feeling that she'd been targeted, that something far worse than Jessica's petty cruelty was coming her way. As she resumed organizing, her movements were more cautious, as though the shadows around her held secrets she wasn't ready to uncover. She was still lost in thought when Elara returned, her expression severe, a tension rippling off her that Summer couldn't place. Elara's gaze swept over the jewelry, her eyes narrowing as they landed on the empty spot where a necklace should have been."Elara?" Summer ventured, sensing the shift in her mood. "Is everything alright?"Elara's gaze snapped to her, piercing. "I'm not sure," she said slowly, suspicion edging her voice. "One of my necklaces is missing. It was here this morning."Summer froze, her mind racing. Jessica's smirk flashed before
