Summer was on the edge of a mental breakdown. After she had made a promise for vengeance the other night, she thought everything would suddenly fall into place, but she was no closer to achieving her goal. This was because there was one person standing between her and her first step to getting revenge–Dominic.
He had made it clear that she was not allowed to leave the palace, but she was not going to give up so easily.
Something else was bothering her, she would sometimes have these weird dreams that she couldn't understand, but she had a feeling that they were somehow connected to Dominic. Her mind was filled with burning questions and a lot of unpleasant words for him, if only she had gotten the chance to confront him, again.
She had tried to speak to the Lycan king every day, but he was never available or barely gave her the time of day. On some rare occasions she would catch sight of him watching her from afar with a distinct look in his eyes, but he would disappear before she could ever approach him.
Summer had made three different attempts to escape the palace since that time, but each time she was caught, and the security only grew tighter. Because of that, her resentment for Dominic grew stronger by the day.
Then, she had moved on to causing trouble within the palace walls, so that she could catch his attention. That had not yielded anything except for breeding the dislike that the Lycans already had for her, since they always had to clean up after her messes.
Even Hilda seemed to have had enough of her, finally learning to stay away when she was not needed.
Today, she stared at her reflection in the new mirror as Hilda helped in braiding her hair. She was thinking of another scheme to catch the king's attention.
"Would you like to take a stroll in the gardens today? Without destroying anything this time…" Hilda asked with a taunt at the end.
Summer's eyes sparkled with a new idea as she stared at Hilda's hands on her hair.
"What is that look? I don't like it." Hilda deadpanned, already accustomed to that twinkle in her eyes when she was about to do something mischievous.
"That's for me to know…" Summer retorted with a smirk.
"You seem to be in a better mood today," Hilda suddenly commented, glancing at her reflection.
Summer instantly wiped the smile off her face at her words. She could not allow herself to feel any type of joy until her plans were accomplished, she just had to get out of the palace first.
"Let's go on that stroll now." She announced as soon as Hilda was done with her hair.
"Breakfast first!" Hilda interjected with a stern expression.
Summer's stomach rumbled at the mention of breakfast, and she quickly agreed.
"But we'll go to the garden immediately afterwards." She finished smartly.
Hilda accepted, and with that, they left for breakfast.
After they were done with their meal, they exited the dining hall, heading for the garden. Summer had planned to let out her wolf and cause a bit more trouble, or possibly escape in her wolf form.
She was getting desperate to get an audience with the king and was even beginning to suspect that Dominic and Alan might have planned this together. Trapping her in the palace without any way to escape, so that Alan and her sister could have full reign over her pack.
"If not, why would he prevent me from leaving this place and even going as far as to avoid me?"
Summer concluded that she had to find a way to run away from the palace, whether the king permitted it or not. She was not going to rot away while her sister and Alan got away with their evil doings. Her face soured with a frown at the ideation.
She was so focused on her thoughts that she didn't notice the person walking towards her until it was too late.
"Oof"
She had bumped into the figure harshly and staggered on her feet before regaining her balance.
She directed her gaze to the person with an apology on the tip of her tongue before she was interrupted.
"What do you have eyes for? Watch where you're going!" The high pitched voice exclaimed with a sneer.
The woman dusted herself off with an upturned nose, as if she had touched something filthy. Summer guessed that she must have caught her wolf scent.
She shot a glare at the woman, annoyed by her tone and body language.
"You don't have to be so rude about it, you bumped into me too. Do you not have eyes?" She retorted in a similar tone.
It is not as if she was pleased to have ran into a Lycan either, a disrespectful one at that.
"Wha- who do you think you are to speak to me in that manner? Do you know who I am? I can destroy you at the snap of a finger!" The woman spluttered with a scowl, scrutinizing Summer with a vehement gaze.
Summer rolled her eyes in reply.
"I don't care who you are, you should be able to take what you dish out anyway," she said in a bored tone.
Just then a group of ladies passing by snickered at the scene.
The woman's face turned red in embarrassment, shooting Summer a scathing glare.
"You're going to regret ever talking back to me!" She promised with a tone that reminded Summer of a bratty child.
The woman gave a glare to an innocent Hilda before she stormed away from the pair.
Summer stared at the woman's form as she left with stomping feet, she thought the woman must have been related to someone important by the expensive clothes and the way she carried herself.
Directing her words to Hilda, she asked;
"Who was that woman?"
Hilda gulped a breath of air and answered with wide eyes.
"That is Jessica Wellington.”
"What is so special about her?" Summer snarled, hoping to hear more about the so-called Jessica because she felt her action earlier simply meant that she was related to a higher authority."She is one of the council members' daughters," Hilda replied cautiously, not ready to get on her toes, although she was happy Summer was talking to her calmly.Summer's lips drew back in a snarl. "Just that?" she questioned, wanting to get more information. She saw no reason why Jessica acted like a peacock when she didn't hold any high authority, and, as she saw it, a council member was not high authority to her."She likes the king too," Hilda added, earning a scowl from Summer, whose face was filled with irritation."Gross!" Summer spat, now understanding why Jessica acted that way. Maybe some lycans had told her about the special treatment she was getting in the palace, and that was what was pissing her off."She better stay in her lane and not cross mine to avoid a story that touches the heart
The dreams were back again. This time they came at her more intensely than they had been the last few times she had had them. What the hell was this about her being dressed in ancient regalia? This time, she saw herself dancing and turning around in a cave that was covered with relics. She looked completely different from her normal self. It looked like her soul had left her body and possessed the body of a stranger. A powerful stranger at that because she could feel the energy as it seeped through her veins.Summer kept thinking about it all day; she sat by the table lost in thoughts; she didn't even notice when it was time to take her bath. The soft knock on her door and the sound of the door opening were what signaled to her that Hilda had come in. She had a big kettle in her hand."Ready to take a bath, ma'am?" Hilda asked her with a smile on her lips, but Summer was silent. Hilda noticed this and was puzzled. It was unlike Summer to be completely silent. She probably didn't even
Summer sat in front of the fancy makeup table, her fingers nervously tracing the patterns on the shiny wood as she looked at her reflection. She couldn't stop thinking about her recent argument with Dominic, each harsh word and piercing look replaying in her mind like a tense movie scene. Hilda's warnings echoed in her head, bothering her like an annoying itch. Was she being reckless? Was this her only way to show she was independent when she felt so powerless? The deep green dress she chose for dinner hugged her curves and swept the floor, reminding her of the confidence she had before getting tangled in the tricky world of politics. She sighed and pushed her damp hair back, still smelling faintly of lavender from her bath. Taking a deep breath, she stared into her own eyes, searching for the strength she desperately needed."I won't let anyone control me," she whispered, feeling a rush of determination. After getting ready, excitement surged through her. Would tonight's dinner be a
The guests at the fancy dinner kept chatting and clinking glasses, creating a lively but tense atmosphere. Summer was lost in thought, her heart racing as she tried to handle her tricky situation. Just as she began to understand the conversations around her, a shift in the mood caught her attention.Dominic had taken his seat at the head of the table, scanning the room to ensure the earlier tensions had eased. Summer could feel his strong presence beside her, commanding respect and stirring her curiosity and inner conflict. As she tried to shift her thoughts, a new person entered the dining hall, drawing everyone's attention at once.Jessica made a grand entrance that matched her bold personality. Dressed in a stunning gown that sparkled in the soft light, highlighting her figure, her laughter cut through the quiet conversations. She confidently crossed the room, her eyes gleaming with mischief.Elara's face brightened when she saw her friend approaching. "Hey, Jessica! Right on time!
Summer walked back to her room with slow, deliberate steps, her heart and mind waging a silent war.Half of her was still caught up in the sensation of Dominic's words, the warmth of his smile, and the way his gaze lingered just a little longer than it should have. But the other half? That side of her was seething, berating her for letting any of it get to her.'He's just a smooth talker,' she reminded herself. A manipulator. She couldn't afford to trust him or anyone in this kingdom. Not when her fate was still so uncertain. The door to her chamber creaked as she pushed it open, letting the silence of the room envelop her.She quickly removed her emerald dress, hanging it on the ornate wooden rack by the wall, and slipped into something more comfortable—a simple nightgown. Her fingers absently toyed with the fabric as she sat on the edge of the bed, staring out of the window at the dark, moonlit sky.A light knock came from the door. "My lady," Hilda's voice called from outside. "Do
Summer stormed into Dominic's study, her fists clenched at her sides. Dominic, seated at his desk, barely glanced up from the document he was reading."Summer," he acknowledged coolly. "What brings you here so early?"She didn't bother with pleasantries. "Why is there a guard following me?"Dominic raised an eyebrow and finally looked up. "For your protection.""Protection?" Summer scoffed. "I'm a prisoner here, Dominic. Who do you think you're protecting me from? It's not like I can leave."Dominic leaned back in his chair, folding his arms across his chest. "You tried to escape once. Did you think I'd just let you wander freely after that?""I wasn't trying to escape," she snapped. "I wanted to get some air, to think. And now, everywhere I go, there's someone watching me. I can't even breathe without feeling like I'm being spied on."Dominic's expression didn't change. "That's the point. You're not trusted yet, Summer. You're here because I allow it, not because you have some right
Summer stared at Dominic, disbelief clouding her thoughts. "You really want me to leave?" Her voice was laced with frustration. "After everything, you've been hell-bent on keeping me here, and now you're just going to let me walk out?"Dominic's expression was unreadable as he leaned against his desk, arms folded across his chest. "It's your choice, Summer. I'm not going to force you to stay if you don't want to be here.""Since when?" she shot back. "Since when do you care about what I want? You've kept me in this kingdom like a prisoner, and now you suddenly don't care if I leave?""If you leave, I won't stop you." His voice was calm, almost too calm as if he were restraining himself. "But you should know that if you walk out of here, you're on your own. I won't protect you anymore."Summer blinked, processing his words. "Protect me from what?" She crossed her arms tightly over her chest. "From who?""From everything out there," he said, his tone clipped. "You're a werewolf in Lycan
Summer paced in her chamber, replaying the moment with Dominic in her mind. Every time she thought about it, the anger flared up inside her again. She couldn't understand how things had spiraled out of control so quickly and how his calm words had turned into something so intense.A kiss? She stopped pacing, running a hand through her hair in frustration. There had been nothing gentle about it, nothing kind. It had been possessive, aggressive—just like him. And yet, there had been something else, something she didn't want to acknowledge. She shook her head, trying to push the thought away. It didn't matter. What mattered now was figuring out how to deal with this situation. She needed answers. With renewed determination, Summer grabbed her cloak and threw it over her shoulders. She needed to speak to Dominic again. Running away wasn't going to solve anything. She wasn't going to let him kiss her and then pretend like nothing had happened. Her heart pounded as she made her way down the
