The faces flash in my head, one after the other—Luca, who’s stayed with Marco through thick and thin. Could it be him? No. I shake my head, pushing the thought away. Luca has endangered his life for us. He wouldn’t betray Marco. He wouldn’t betray me.

But then who? My mind races, replaying every interaction, every word spoken. It might be anyone. And that’s what terrifies me the most. The concept that someone we’ve trusted, someone who has been with us through everything, could be the one tearing us apart from the inside. The treachery feels too close, too personal, and it left me reeling.

Marco’s voice cuts through the silence, strong and decisive. "We’re going to find out who it is," he continues, his tone dangerously calm. "And when we do, they’ll regret ever crossing me."

I glance at Marco, and I can see the storm in his eyes. His jaw is clenched so firmly that I’m astonished it hasn’t snapped. His rage is obvious, a fire burning just beneath the surface. He’s not just furious…

Sofia hesitates for a moment as if contemplating her alternatives. Then, finally, she glances up, her eyes filled with dread. "It’s someone close to you,"she replies gently. "Someone you’d never suspect." An icy sensation rushes down my spine. The space feels abruptly smaller, the walls closing in around me. I can’t breathe. Sofia knows the truth, but the issue remains—can we trust her? Marco steps forward, his eyes locked into Sofia’s. "Tell me who it is," he growls, his voice filled with rage. Sofia’s lips tremble as she whispers the words that will change everything. "The traitor... is someone within your inner circle." The weight of Sofia’s words comes down on me, sending a shockwave through my entire body. Someone in Marco’s inner circle? My mind races, the faces of those closest to us flashing before my eyes Luca, Enzo, Matteo. People we’ve fought beside, and trusted with our life. Could one of them be the traitor? I glance at Marco, and for the first time, I detect uncerta

The words hang in the air, and my stomach drops. I notice Marco stiffen, his eyes narrowing further, if that’s even possible. “Who?” he demands, his voice a hoarse snarl. Sofia swallows hard. “I... I don’t know exactly,” she admits, and Marco lets out a hard laugh. “Of course, you don’t.”“No!” Sofia shakes her head urgently. “I know it’s someone in your inner circle. Someone who’s been feeding Gianni information for months.”My throat tightens, and I can feel my hands quivering at my sides. The room spins slightly as the reality seeps in. A traitor. Someone we’ve trusted. Someone who has been with us all along. The concept makes my skin crawl. Marco draws closer, his voice deadly quiet again. “If you don’t know who it is, then how do you expect us to believe anything you’re saying?” He’s hanging over her now, his presence frightening, but Sofia doesn’t back down. “I overheard him!” Sofia blurts out, her voice shaking. “He was on the phone with someone. The weight of Sofia's confession hangs in the air, leaving Francesca and Marco to confront the truth: someone close to them is the enemy, and their time is running out to identify who it is before it's too late.Sofia's remarks hang in the atmosphere like a ticking time bomb. Every muscle in my body tightens with uneasiness as the strain seeps through. Marco is equally shaken, and I can see it in his eyes as well. There is an intolerable quiet in the room."Who is it?" Marco's harsh, low voice pierces the dense atmosphere. His query lingers, and Sofia remains silent for a considerable amount of time. She stands up and shifts, her hands shaking and her gaze darting around anxiously. She appears frightened, as though she is aware of the seriousness of what she is going to say.At last, she murmurs, "It's Luca."My heart sinks. "Luca?" I utter the word with shock and amazement. It isn't possible. He has been devoted to Marco from the beginning. I shake my head, attempting to process what

Marco remains motionless and does not blink. His calm statement, "I don't know what to believe," lingers in the atmosphere. It's similar to witnessing a mountain topple. Marco's confidence in Luca is eroding, and I can sense it in everything he says.Luca steps closer to Marco and shakes his head. "Marco, you are aware of me. I've been your friend for years. I would never turn on you. I am not the enemy; Gianni is."So why did Sofia claim to have heard you conversing with him?" With a stern voice, I ask. "If this weren't true, why would she put herself in danger to come here and tell us?"A sneer curls Luca's lips as he glares at Sofia. "Because she's attempting to protect herself." She's playing me under the bus because she fears Gianni will murder her. It's a traditional move.Sofia takes a step forward, her enraged eyes flashing. "You're telling lies! Luca, you are the traitor! Admit it!It seems like the room is going to blow apart. With his hands clenched so tightly that I can se

Sofia, standing a few feet behind me, doesn’t say a word. I can feel her presence, nervous and on edge, waiting for Marco to make his choice. It’s like we’re all waiting for the moment when everything shatters.“I’ve always been loyal to you, Marco,” Luca adds, his voice firm. He takes another step toward Marco, his eyes locked on his. “I would never turn my back on you. Not now, not ever.”I swallow hard, trying to make sense of this. Luca has always been by Marco’s side. He’s been with us through thick and thin. But why would Sofia lie? Her fear is palpable. I can see it in the way she clutches her hands together, her fingers shaking. Why would she come here, risk her life, if she wasn’t telling the truth?“Marco,” I say quietly, breaking the heavy silence. “We need to be careful. What if she’s right?”Luca turns to me, his eyes hard. “You believe I could do this, Francesca? After everything?”I don’t know what to believe anymore. Minutes pass, and the silence in the room gets heavy. I pace back and forth, my mind rushing, my feelings a mess. Every step I take feels like I’m walking on the edge of a cliff, ready to fall.Sofia sits down on the edge of the couch, her hands clasped tightly together. She looks just as nervous as I feel, though she’s trying to hide it. “Do you think Marco will find proof?” she asks quietly, her voice almost hopeful.I shrug, not knowing what to say. “I don’t know. I hope so.”We sit in silence for a while longer, both of us lost in our thoughts. The clock on the wall ticks loudly, each second going on like an eternity. Every noise outside the room makes me jump, my nerves on edge. Finally, I can’t take it anymore. I turn to Sofia, my voice shaking. “What if we’re wrong?”Sofia looks up at me, her eyes wide. “We’re not wrong. Luca is the enemy, Francesca. You have to trust me.”“I want to,” I say softly, my voice barely audible. “But this… it’s all so hard to believe.”Sofia reaches

Sofia fidgets anxiously as she glances down at her hands. "I heard someone talking. Although it was brief, it sounded as though Luca was providing Gianni with details on Marco's whereabouts, movements, and other details that only someone close to him would be aware of.Although her words make me shudder, what sticks with me is the hesitancy in her voice. She doesn't seem persuaded. She seems uncertain about what she heard. And that simply strengthens my misgivings.I turn to her and stop pacing. What if, however, you misheard? What if Gianni is trying to make Marco doubt himself by using you? You acknowledged that you were unsure. Her eyes are wide with terror as she glances up at me. "I'm not sure, Francesca. Simply Keeping that to myself was not an option. I couldn't take the chance. Her worry is genuine. Is it warranted, though? Or is it lost? The realization makes my chest constrict. He has been planning this. Everything. His strategy included chaos, betrayals, and leaks. He's here now to see it all burn.My hands tremble with rage as I take a step forward. “Gianni, you’re sick. Have you not been influencing everything? All of us, including Luca and Marco, have been pulling the strings. He doesn't dispute it. Rather, he simply smiles once more—that same icy, calculating smile."Francesca, you give me too much credit," he says with ease. "However, I do enjoy keeping things interesting."Every muscle in my body tenses with rage as I clench my hands. I know it won't help, but I want to yell at him and kick him out. Gianni lives on power and control, and he currently has the advantage. The worst thing is that I have no idea how to stop him.Francesca and Sofia are taken aback by Gianni's sudden appearance and get tense because they fear they might be playing right into his hands. I get a wave of uneasiness as soon as the message is sent. My chest is filled with a profound sensation of fear, and my heart is pounding. We've started a risky strategy, and I can't get rid of the sensation that we've made a grave error.Marco looks at me with an unreadable expression. "It's finished," he murmurs. "We wait now."I nod, but my thoughts are whirling. The rival family has consistently been erratic, even cruel. We just gave them a chunk of our city and our lives, and we have no idea what they will do with it.I keep thinking about Sofia's words: They're going to exploit the instability and leave us with nothing.I look at Marco, who is already thinking deeply and perhaps preparing his next move. I can't help but wonder whether he's in over his head this time, even though he's typically so focused and dedicated.Marco breaks the stillness with, "We'll get through this." "We must."I nod, but my chest still aches from the fear. At what price is the alliance sealed? Doubt w

The coffee abruptly becomes sour in my throat, and I feel my stomach turn. "Cut the city in half?" I say it again, hardly raising my voice above a whisper. "That's Marco, that's too much. We are unable to provide them with that.He stretches his fingers through his hair and exhales deeply in frustration. "I understand. However, we require their assistance. We will never be able to defeat Gianni without them.I examine him, looking for any hint of uncertainty or weakness in his commitment. Marco, however, remains steadfast, his eyes steely and unforgiving. I'm afraid that he has already made up his mind."However, half the city..." I repeat, my voice faltering. "It's all of that."Even though Marco remains silent, our quiet is sufficient. I understand his thoughts. We've been driven to the limit by this conflict with Gianni, and now we have to make hard decisions. But accepting this? Giving a family we can't trust half of everything we've fought so hard for? Everything we have battled

Marco takes a while to reply. His face is fixed in that unreadable expression he always has when he's pondering, and he's also staring at the ceiling. He sighs after a moment. "We had no other option. Gianni made us hold his hand.I shake my head, a feeling of frustration rising within me. However, Marco, things didn't have to be this way. For months, we have been hiding, battling, and running. I have lost any sense of what we are fighting for.His voice is sharper now as he says, "Francesca, we're fighting for survival." His eyes are harsh as he turns to face me. "Gianni is determined to get what he wants, and he wants me dead." It's no longer just about us. It all comes down to survival. With each syllable, I sense the gap between us widening. "How about us? What about all of our experiences? This conflict cannot cost me you.For a little moment, he becomes softer and reaches for my hand. "I won't leave you. I swear. Even though his comments are supposed to be consoling, they seem h

At last, he turns, his eyes dark and roiling with an inexplicable tempest of emotions. "We continue to battle. Gianni is unstoppable. Until one of us passes away, no."With my heart racing, I take a step closer. "And if it’s you?"Marco clenches his jaw. "It won’t be."Despite the destruction all around us, I want to believe him. "This war... it’s going to destroy everything, isn’t it?"His quiet is sufficient even when he doesn't respond.Luca approaches us with a grim expression on his face. "We must reorganize. They will return.Marco nods while continuing to gaze at the debris. "Yes. And we'll be prepared the next time."The impact of what he said becomes apparent. This is just the start. And I'm in the midst of it all.I'm caught in the middle of the conflict between Marco and Gianni, which has officially started. I have no idea what's going to happen next, and there's no going back now. I can only hope Marco is correct and that we will survive in the future.Hours after the atta

I draw away from him and shake my head. However, what if you are unable to stop it? Marco, you are not in charge of everything. The strain radiates from him as he clenches his jaw. I'm about to fall asleep when...Break!One sound slashes through the darkness, then another.Fire.My heart is pounding as I sit straight upright. Sofia doesn’t move. Her expression remains calm, her voice steady as she replies. “What we want is simple. We want Gianni out of the picture before he damages all we’ve built.” “And what happens after that?” the younger man says, his tone scornful. “You expect us to just shake hands and walk away? You think we’re that naïve?” The room goes silent, and I can feel the weight of his words weighing down on us. He’s not incorrect. Even if we manage to take Gianni out, there’s no certainty this union will hold. Trust is delicate in our society, and relationships may shatter in an instant. The elder guy narrows his gaze, watching us in quiet. The tension is oppressive, and I can feel my hands trembling in my lap. I tighten fingers into fists, attempting to stabilize myself, but the weight of the moment is crushing. “I’ll be honest,” the elder guy says after what seems like an eternity. “I don’t trust you. But I also don’t trust Gianni. And maybe that’s enough for now.” His words are lik

  • Betrayal and Devotion   Chapter 58

It's this. The moment that might make all the difference. The issue that looms as the door opens and the faces of the opposing family are revealed is whether this encounter will end in an alliance or a betrayal that might destroy everything that Marco and Francesca have worked so hard to achieve. The room seems colder than typical, not because of the weather, but because of the attitude. It’s badly lit, barely enough light to make out the faces in front of us. I sat across from two men....two guys who could alter everything in this conflict with just a single word. Marco sits behind me, his jaw taut, his eyes flaming with that intensity he brings into every battle. But this isn't a battle of punches and guns—this is a war of words and every word matters. The calm is overwhelming. No one dares to speak first, as if whoever breaks the calm would lose something crucial. The elder guy across from us, the boss, has sharp features and eyes that could pierce through steel. His younger equ

"And how precisely do we prevent them from betraying us?" Marco asks in a harsh tone. "Loyalty isn't exactly what these people are known for." Sofia gives a nod. That's where we need to employ our intelligence. We'll watch them closely and adopt terms that secure us. We are using them, not trusting them. And we'll be clear that they won't fare well if they betray us. Her self-assurance is frightening. Although she makes it seem easy, I know it's not. There is a substantial potential for betrayal, and we are entering a perilous situation. However, Sofia appears confident…perhaps too confident. And I'm concerned about that. Marco shakes his head and sighs, "I still don't like this." "I am aware that you don't," Sofia says coolly. However, we no longer have the luxury of being careful. This opposing family is not as scary as Gianni's. He will ruin us all if we don't act fast. As Marco mulls over what she said, the room goes quiet. I can see the wheels moving in his thoughts as his j

Marco approaches me while softly cupping my face with his outstretched palms. We're not going to lose everything. As long as I am still alive, no.He says things that should reassure me, but they don't. I am aware of the hazard. I am aware that we will be entering an unwinnable conflict if Sofia's plan fails.Sofia gets to her feet, ending our heated exchange. "We must move quickly. The competing family gets more power the longer we wait. And whether we like it or not, they will pursue us if we don't act quickly.Marco wipes a hand across his face and sighs. He appears worn out, as though the entire world is pressing down on him. It is, in a sense. Now that he is bearing the weight of the entire city, he must make a decision that could either save us or bring about our destruction. Finally, in a strained voice, he states, "I need time to think."Sofia understands and nods. But Marco, don't waste too much time. Time is running out, no time to waste please hope you get it.There is a de
