Her heavy breathing echoed through the tunnel. Every atom of her body ached, but the devastating pain had relented. Liv's chin rested on the clammy cave floor, but she didn't feel the grit and small rocks she had before. Slowly, she allowed her eyes to open and was surprised at what she saw. It was like looking through night vision goggles minus the green glow. She could see details of the craggy walls, and noticed an industrious spider weaving a web across a large crack. Did the bump on the head improve her vision? It was so strange.

Out of the blue, a rank odor assaulted her nostrils. She gave a tentative sniff trying to place it. It was very familiar but too intense. As she raised her nose to the air, she gasped as she saw the long canine nose in front of her eyes. She sucked in a startled breath, but when she let it out, it wasn't a moan but a whine. What the fuck was happening?

She leapt to her feet. Her four feet. She closed her eyes tightly and counted to ten. Slowly opening t

Liv's fur stood on end and her lips curled up over her teeth in a silent snarl. She recognized the voice. Killian! The one who had betrayed Brodi and helped Brand kidnap her. She wanted to hide but her wolf was determined to confront the shifter. Liv continued to listen at the opening as the two sides warred within her. Then her hand was forced. Footsteps echoed down the hall behind her.Huffing out a huge breath, she inched her head around the opening to see into the room. Killian was alone, sitting at a table, and looking over a large map spread out in front of him. He faced away from the doorway so Liv carefully slid into the room, pressing herself into the shadows against the wall as tight as she could. She froze when the voice came from the hall. "Alpha! We have a situation!" Thomas called as he came into the room. He had lost several minutes trying to figure out what had happened with Sean in the hall. He was torn to pieces and the woman was gone. The scene was so bizarre, he w

Liam had watched his Alpha coming apart for months now. Rather than humbling him when they were forced off their lands by the bear shifters, he became more and more bold and dictatorial. Now he was simply unhinged. Liam had never trusted Brand. The shifter had a huge chip on his shoulder where his brother was concerned and it was never smart to get involved in a family fight. They had all heard of Brodi's strength and the strength and loyalty of his pack for years. How Killian thought taking the Alpha's mate would be in any way a positive for them, he didn't know. All he knew was that it was up to him to save his pack from Killian's horrible decisions.Moving quickly down the path, it wasn't long before Liam was confronted with a huge white wolf with ice blue eyes. It could only be Brodi Sköll. Liam quickly fell to one knee and dropped his head. He could only hope it was enough to keep the Alpha from tearing him apart just for being part of the Blackfoot Pack."Please have mercy and

Brodi tried to quickly assess the situation as they rushed into the cave. Killian was dead on the ground with blood pooling around his body. A large, red wolf stood over him, obviously the conqueror in the fight. A female, she was covered in the dead wolf's blood. Apparently, Liam wasn't the only disgruntled wolf of the Blackfoot Pack. But then under the metallic scent of the blood, he smelled something else. His blue eyes widened in shock. What was this? This wolf had the unique, intoxicating scent of his mate. Could it be?As Gunnar, Finn, and Eric watched in horror, Brodi shifted and started walking toward the bloodied female wolf. Finn started to block his Alpha with his body but then experienced a strong sense of déjà vu. Last time Brodi had done this, it had been because he had scented Liv. He froze at the thought. "What is he doing?" Gunnar asked Finn in Rhuhi and started toward his brother."Stop. Let him go." Finn replied, watching the scene in front of him with wonder."Ar

After finally finishing up with what was left of the Blackfoot Pack, Liv released a deep sigh as she curled up in the safety of Brodi's massive arms. They lay on top of the covers of the big, four-poster bed in his room, completely clothed but deeply content after the incredible challenges of the day."I'm glad most of Killian's pack decided to take you up on your offer," Liv said, rubbing the side of her face on his chest like a kitten. "He was a horrible man. His people looked so lost while you were talking to them."Brodi snugged her even tighter to his chest and kissed the top of her head. He never wanted her out of his arms again. "They've been very mistreated. Some of them don't know any other way of life. It will take time to have them truly trust us and become part of the pack. We'll have to have patience.""Where are they all going to stay?" Liv threw a leg over his thigh, trying to get closer."Gunnar is going to assign crews to start clearing a bit of land and building new

Liv spent the next few days in a whirlwind, helping Asta with the new pack members when she wasn't in 'wolf lessons' with Brodi. Despite her misgivings, she had quickly learned to shift by herself without pain and was starting to be more comfortable in her wolf form. She still couldn't run as fast or as gracefully as the others, but she was working on it.She spent every night in Brodi's arms and while their lovemaking had been amazing as ever, he still hadn't brought up the final step in the mating bond. Liv knew he was still at risk until the bond was completed and worry had started to take root in the back of her brain about it. That night after a long shower together, Liv gathered up her courage to ask him about it."Brodi, can I ask you something?""Of course, Elskling. Anything." Brodi sat behind her on the bed, pulling a brush through her long red hair since she had taken out the braids for a bit. She closed her eyes enjoying the slight pull on her scalp from the brush and Bro

They arrived late in the dining room since after they had recovered from the claiming, Brodi had gently cleaned her wound then taken her to his double-sized shower and bathed her from head to toe. Liv had felt like a goddess as he took his time caressing every inch of her skin with a washcloth and soap. When his hands flowed through the long strands of her hair rinsing out the shampoo, she could take no more of the sensual assault. Her lips had latched onto his and she did her best to climb him like a tree. Brodi had laughed and balanced himself against the tiled wall, taking a firm grip of the generous globes of her ass and making her fly again. Walking in hand in hand, engrossed in each other, they were taken aback when the entire room broke into cheers. Liv could feel the heat climbing quickly from her chest to her hairline and she hid her face in the crook of Brodi's neck. Everyone had obviously heard them in the bedroom. She was mortified. Brodi, on the other hand, simply laughe

After finishing dinner, Brodi took Liv and Kelda to the small den at the back of the house where they could meet privately. They settled themselves in front of the fireplace, Liv and Brodi hand in hand on the loveseat and Kelda in the chair across from them. Brodi filled his lungs with air and blew it out before getting to business."According to pack law, Brand could be executed for what he has done." His hand tightened around Liv's when she gasped. "Brodi, no. You can't execute him. What he did was awful but he's your brother, after all." Brodi hung his head and rubbed the back of his neck. He should have known his mate would want to be merciful. Killing his brother would be horrific, but he didn't know what else to do and keep Liv safe. "I know, Elkskling I don't want to do it, but there have to be significant consequences.""You could banish him, Alpha," Kelda spoke up, her grass green eyes meeting his with understanding."But to where? I would always be looking over my shoulder

Brand groaned and spit sand out of his mouth. He pried his eyes open and blinked trying to focus on his surroundings. Cold damp sand. A grey sky and a glacial wind was cutting through his jeans and thin, down jacket. Where the fuck am I?Before he could gather the strength to push himself up, a weight landed in the middle of his back, pinning him to the ground. A steely feminine voice made his blood run colder than the wind on his skin. "Hvem er du? Hvor er resten av mennene dine? (Who are you? Where are the rest of your men?)"Brand tried to twist to see the woman but a heavier boot stopped his motion. "Bli der du er og svar damen! (Stay where you are and answer the lady!)," a gruff voice demanded.Breathing heavily, Brand stayed silent while he tried to figure out what was going on. The last thing he remembered was being in a clearing near the compound, the wind blowing and lightning flashing across the sky. Then he saw Kelda, arms outstretched, red hair flying about her body, and

The clearing glowed with the twinkling fairy lights that adorned every tree, and the torches that had been lit along the path to illuminate the participants' way. Brand stood in front of the Yggdrasil feeling like his throat was being constricted by a stiff collar rather than a soft tunic. He wore a bearskin over one shoulder to symbolize strength and protection. He was also glad of its warmth as the first snows had started to fall just in the last week. He huffed as Brodi clapped him on the shoulder. "Nervous yet?" he asked with a smile, adjusting the leather hauberk that held his broadsword across his back and the belt at his waist where the sheath for his ceremonial dagger rested. "No, just cold," Brand lied through gritted teeth. His brother just laughed at him. "Don't worry, Brother. It will all be over soon, then we can get to the feasting," Brodi told him jovially.Brand frowned at him. "Easy for you to say," he muttered."Really, Brother. I know you missed our ceremony, but

Brand's brother turned to him, seeking guidance, just as Brand became aware of the stickiness on his hand. He at first ignored it. He had been in too many bloody brawls in his lifetime for blood to bother him overmuch. But when his mate gasped and tensed in his arms, a wave of dread washed over him. He realized that the stickiness was not merely the expected aftermath of the fight but something far more sinister. His elskede, his alt, Ulfhild, was wounded."Min elskede! Where are you hurt?" he demanded, his hands roaming frantically over her body.Ulfhild slapped at him ineffectually. "It is nothing, min ulv, only a scratch. Go with your brother. There is no time to spare."Brand ignored her and instead shouted to Astrid who had been standing on the edge of the crowd, clearly overwhelmed by her ordeal and its brutal end. Broken out of her reverie, Astrid came forward quickly and fell into healer mode. "Lie her down. Let me look," she instructed, ignoring her daughter's continued prote

In the meadow, the winds seemed to take on a malevolent life of their own, their force intensifying with each passing moment. They twisted and spiraled, whipping through the grass and causing mini-tornadoes to erupt from the churned ground. The very earth under his feet seemed to groan in protest, and the acrid scent of freshly turned dirt mingled with the sharp tang of ozone, assaulting Brodi's senses as he ducked his head against the maelstrom and continued to silently advance.Above, the heavens were entirely shrouded by roiling, malignant clouds that seemed to devour any trace of starlight or moonshine. Leif and Astrid appeared to him only in the stark, searing flashes of the lightning overhead. The thunder that followed was a deafening roar, so powerful that it resonated deep within his chest, but still he stalked toward his prey. Squinting against the flying debris, he finally saw his brothers and the warriors in position against the backdrop of the ancient tree, whose gnarled b

Gunnar stopped on the edge of the clearing where the giant Yggdrasil grew. He shifted, holding up a hand to forestall the warriors behind him. "He and Astrid are in the clearing," he whispered to the men.Birger squinted, trying to see them through the screen of skinny pines that blocked their view of the meadow. "Where? I can't see a thing through all these-" he stopped and hit his forehead with his palm. "Right. Wolf. You smell them."With a crooked smile on his face, Gunnar nodded to the man. "Yes. Their scent is very strong. The boy is fearful." He sniffed the air again. "And the woman is angry. More angry than fearful."Erik tipped his chin up in agreement. "That would be Astrid. She may not be a warrior like her daughter, but she is stronger than most men I know. She would never have gone with him if it had been only her own life that was threatened."Vidar's face showed his worry. Again, he was in the middle of a disaster. At least this time, it was a disaster not of his own ma

Liv rested her forehead against Brodi's chest, fear almost taking her breath. His arms tightened around her as she shook with silent tears. Brodi had brought her back to the house, forbidding her to continue with the hunt. Overwhelmed by concern for her baby, she'd teetered on the edge of hysteria, her emotions running wild. She had to calm down, especially considering the news she had discovered just this morning."Min elskling, you must try to remain calm. We will find him," Brodi had assured her, holding her close to his broad chest and rocking her in his arms like a child. Her sobs finally quieted, taking strength from within his strong embrace and the firm certainty of his voice. He flattened a large palm on her belly. "This child will have a big brother that is healthy and hale. I swear to you."Looking up into the blue eyes she loved so much, she could see his absolute conviction that what he was telling her was true. They knew every inch of their pack lands. Surely, they would

"Quit mumbling, witch!" Leif ordered as he continued to pull her along with the leather cord that bound her wrists. "I won't have you spelling me! Keep it up and I will stick a gag in your mouth. Do you understand.""Yes," Astrid said shortly. A bit of her usual calm composure returning to her after completing her frantic prayers. "I understand perfectly." She paused for effect. "But, young Leif, I do not think you understand your situation very well."Leif twisted his neck around to fix her with a venomous glare, his eyes blazing with an insanity that sent a shiver down her spine, but she maintained her dispassionate look. "What are you talking about, Witch? I'm the only one who understands exactly my situation. I've been stuck in this place for over a week, alone. How to get myself back to my proper time is all I've been thinking of.""What you have not thought through," Astrid continued calmly, "is what will happen to you once the Alpha finds you. Cubs are rare here, I understand."

Leif panted as he leaned against a tree to catch his breath. The child was heavier than he'd expected, and the air here was thin. Placing the baby at his feet, he looked around, trying to get his bearings. He estimated he'd run several miles from the women and the clearing already. Suddenly, howling rent the silence of the forest. The baby inexplicably smiled and clapped his chubby hands, but the fine hair on the back of Leif's neck and arms stood straight up in atavistic fear. Were the creatures close? Dusk was approaching but he didn't dare light a fire. Where could he hide with the krakki? The wolf song died out and the baby began to fuss. Leif glared down at him. This was going to be more complicated than he thought. If the baby started wailing, the sound would bring people and wild things alike. Was he even old enough for solid food? He should have grabbed that big bag with the silly looking animals all over it that was sitting next to him. He bet that housed some baby things. B

Ulfhild felt more like herself than she had since coming to this new place. Asta had beat her soundly at axe throwing, Ulfhild not having much practice at that particular skill, but she was sure she could compete in archery. Though she missed a lot of what they were saying, it was good to laugh with the women and experience the comradery. She'd always been set apart by the women in her village who would never have thought of throwing axes. Maybe this time wouldn't be so bad.Suddenly, she heard terror in Liv's voice. "Brand? Brand?" she called in a panic, searching frantically around the boulder.Ulfhild realized the baby was no longer on the blanket playing with his toys. Fear clutched at her heart. She thought he could not crawl or walk? With all the wolves around, there were no other large animals around for miles. She'd heard the men discussing the lack."He can't have gone far," Asta said soothingly, trying to calm her sister-in-law's panic. She started to search around the nearb

Liv had not been kidding when she had said they'd have to tromp through some woods. The training field was much farther from the area where they had their homes than she had expected. The distance and rough terrain didn't seem to bother the women. Baby Brand was strapped onto Liv's chest with some complicated looking knots of fabric that created a comfortable carrying sack for the large infant. It was obvious by her easy stride that carrying the boy this way was commonplace to her. On the way, Liv pointed out landmarks and told her things about the area. Asta tried to keep up with all the words, but Ulfhild felt she missed quite a few. It didn't matter. Simply being in nature and stretching her unused muscles was a relief to her. And they were going to train. Her heart leapt at the thought. This was exactly what she needed to dispel her melancholy and feel more like herself. Finally, they rounded a large boulder and came into a meadow that reminded Ulfhild of the meadow in her woods
