NOLAN
W-Wait what?!
I was stunned, can’t utter a single word. ‘I-Is this another d-dream?!’ I asked myself. I looked at her; my mind can’t process what’s happening. Her arms were covered in water, so is her legs. Her top was also covered with fluid.
The water that ran through her legs eventually became an aqua blue net that looked like a long skirt that covered her two skinny legs, just like what I saw in my dream. Then, the water ran up to her body and it made her semi-transparent cloth. The same water ran above her legs to her two arms and covered it with a net in a darker shade of aqua blue. A blue ball of water went up to her head and made her a beautiful shining crown. Lastly, the water drew something on her right arm; it was a wave, the waves of the sea.
S-She’s a goddess.
After she transformed, a pile of water went to her hand and formed a spear. I looked at her still stuck in my place. She looked at me then she smiled, “Do you believe me now?” N-No, this i-is a dream!
I can’t move, t-this can’t be real! Myths are only fictional, they can’t exist! That’s why it’s a myth! “Argh!” I slapped my face and it hurts. No, I still wouldn’t believe that it’s real! A light laugh came from her, I can’t respond. I still won’t believe it!
“Nolan, this is not a dream. This is reality, accept it that we exist.” She spoke, heavenly.
“How can I make s-sure that this is r-real?” I asked, nervously. “There’s no need for assurance. You just need to believe.” She answered. Okay, this is just a dream, don’t panic. Just go with the flow.
“Ok, so you appeared because you want to?” I asked. Remember Nolan, this is all a dream.
“I want you to realize that this is real! Because every time I appear to you, you’ll say that it’s a dream and it’s frustrating for me!" She said then she stopped. "What's more important is that you need to complete the mission. You need to find the mermaid.” She continued. Upon stating the word ‘mermaid’, my mind went blank. I remembered all of my memories with Asherah. It also came back to me, the feeling I’ve felt long ago. The feeling of missing someone.
But, “But what if I can’t do it? What if I don’t have enough strength to do it?” She just smiled before answering my question.
“It seems like you don’t have enough will to do it. I’ll wait for when you’re ready.” She said to me. So, this is the end of the dream?
I’m expecting for that force to come again, but there was none. I closed my eyes, hoping that if I open it, I would wake up.
After a few minutes, I finally opened my eyes. I saw Credail looking at me. “As what I’ve said. What you saw is not a dream. I’m a goddess.” N-No, s-so it’s real?!
“S-So it’s real?” Her eyes shone, “Finally, you’ve realized!” She shouted. “Yes, it is real. Do you want me to transform again?” She asked.
“No that’s enough,” I said to her. I believe it now.
“So, what? Will you find her now?” She asked, excitedly. I frowned, “Give me some time, I’ll think about it.” She looked at me with a face of disbelief.
“Is she not important to you!?” My eyes widened when she burst out of frustration.
“N-No, it’s not like that. She’s important to me! I like her when we were still young. B-But, I’m afraid…” I can’t continue my sentence. She looked at me, clueless.
“Why are you afraid?” She asked me. “I’m afraid that…what if I can’t find her because…” I took a deep breath. I can’t say it. “Why? Because, what if she’s long dead?” She asked. There she said it.
I nodded at her answer. She became serious, “But, we wouldn’t know that if we wouldn’t find her, right? And it’s just a ‘what if’.” She said, trying to convince me.
She got a point, we wouldn’t know if we wouldn’t see it. I also think that I can’t sleep thinking about the mermaid. I also miss her, her gentle voice and her gentle smile but still, “Let me think about it.” She smiled as if she understood it.
“All right, I hope that it’s not too late when you decided what to do.” She said to me, I just nodded my head at her.
“By the way, who really are you? I have a hunch that ‘Credail’ is not your real name.” I said to her.
“My real name is Amansinaya, the goddess of the sea.” She said and smiled.
I was spaced out on the way home. So that just happened, I just met a goddess named Amansinaya. Now that I got my memory back, I can’t help but think about the mermaid. Whenever I think about her, my heart throbs fast.
I open the door of our house. As the time I opened it, mom greeted me, “Did you passed out again? Are you alright dear?” Mom said. I looked at her and nodded.
“Yeah mom, I’m alright,” I said to her then hugged her. I walked towards the living room. “Welcome home son.” I saw dad watching a Volleyball match on the television. I walked towards him.
“Thanks, Dad,” I said then head towards my room. I quickly changed my clothes. I walked towards the mirror. I looked at my handsome face. I’m bothered by the thought of not finding her. But am I enough to find her?
I tried to erase that thought in my brain and relax for a while. Because every time I think of her, I want to find her, I want to be with her and I want to live with her. However, do I have the strength to do that?
Few days passed, still, I haven’t decided what to do. Credail or should I say, Amansinaya is patiently waiting for my answer. I badly want to find her. I miss her. Though, I don’t know if I have the courage to find her.
I looked up; the sky is clear today, with no signs of rain. I walked towards our building. We have three tests today, Friday. I head straight to our room.
What I first saw are my classmates roaming everywhere. They’re noisy as heck! I sighed and quickly went to my seat. To my surprise, I didn’t see Orlene. Where is she?
I faced Amansinaya, “Hey, do you know where’s Orlene?” I asked. She looked at me before she answered.
“She said that she can’t go to school today. She’s sick.” Upon hearing that, I can’t help but be worried. We have multiple tests today; I hope she gets well tomorrow to take a special test.
I nodded at her, “I hope she gets well soon.” I said.
Few minutes passed when finally, our teacher went inside. We were all nervous about the test, aside from Amansinaya. It seems like she’s playing a game rather than taking the test.
Throughout the test, I couldn’t help but to think about Asherah, I hope she’s alive. I hope she’s okay wherever she is right now.
The test was a bit hard for someone that didn’t study. Unfortunately, even though I’ve studied overnight; I didn’t pass the exam. My mind was occupied the whole time we’re taking the test. My brain was full of ‘what-ifs’.
I was stressed out, what’s happening to me?! I am not like this before!
A few minutes later, our next teacher came. We’ve ready ourselves for another test. I hope I can pass this one.
An hour has passed; I have passed the test but my score’s at the exact passing rate. I couldn’t concentrate, what’s happening to me today?! Am I sick?
After two more subjects, we finally had our lunch break, I was about to go and buy myself some lunch. However, as I stood up, my head started hurting. It was not as painful as before but it surely hurts. Therefore, I decided to use my lunchtime to sleep.
“Is it masakit? (Does it hurt?)” Asherah asked then pointed at the wound on the young boy’s hand. Nolan looked at it; the wound hurts but he can still handle it.
“No,” Nolan answered. Asherah gave him a face of are-you-sure-?
“Sandali, I’ll heal it. (Wait, I’ll heal it.)” Nolan didn’t understand some parts of Asherah’s sentence. He just nodded, clueless at what’s about to happen.
Asherah sang a beautiful and slow song. After a while, a pile of water at the sea rose. It danced on Nolan’s hand. Until he realized that the water was healing his small wound.
He was amazed by the magic he saw. “Wow!” He stated.
Nolan looked at her, he saw how Asherah smiled at him. “Thank you.” He said to her.
“Wake up, our next teacher is coming.” I woke up when I heard one of our classmates. I looked at him; I believe he’s our classroom president.
I responded with a nod. I dreamed of a part of my memory. Just seeing her in my dream calms the whole of me.
I looked at my watch, five minutes left before our next subject begins. I can’t help but think of her every time.
But, what should I do? Am I enough to find her?
End of Chapter 4
NOLANA week has passed, and something unexpected happened. I looked at my back, I saw Orlene who’s now sitting and writing something on her notes. She apparently knew about the mermaid. She said she accidentally heard me and Amansinaya talking to each other. She even heard that Credail is Amansinaya. What’s surprising is that she didn’t even freak out. Instead, she was amazed that Credail is a goddess. She even wanted to see Amansinaya’s power. Heck, she nagged us the whole week just so she could see the goddess’ power! Therefore, we have left with no choice but to show her. Amansinaya and I decided to show it to her after class.I looked at the seat beside me. Amansinaya isn't early today, huh? Commonly she’s earlier than me every time we go to school. I looked at my watch, fifteen minutes left before our first subject starts.“Nolan, did you do our homework?” I turned my
NOLAN“Hmm, I really think that you must find her.” There she goes, every day is like that. I looked at Orlene, irritated. She didn’t stop persuading me.“I said I’m not yet ready. Give me some time to think.” I said.“Isn’t a few days enough for you? How much time do you need more? Months? Years?” She asked bluntly. I didn’t respond to her. Instead, I opened my notes and started studying. She sighed at me, “You know what? If you’re like that, I don’t think that you deserve her.” I was stunned at her answer. I looked at her, I tried to open my mouth but no voice came out.I can’t answer her, a moment of silence ensued between us; until our teacher came.I can’t focus on the discussion. As if I’m here in the classroom but my brai
NOLANI felt a strong force pulling me.Minutes have passed when I felt the force starting to fade away. I slowly opened my eyes; what I saw is a jaw-dropping view. I looked around, Orlene was beside me while Amansinaya, now on her goddess form is in front of us.Breathe of the wind slowly whispered upon us. Trees that are everywhere, unlike in our world where buildings and structures were the only things you can see. In the sky, you see a flock birds flying. One of them was leading the way. My eyes looked at that bird when I noticed that it was also looking at us. Then, the bird flaps its wings directly towards us.I was about to run when a flock of birds flew to our direction but Amansinaya stopped me. “Don’t run they won’t harm us.” And she was right. The bird that led the direction landed on my shoulders. While the others landed on the ground.“The bird on your should
NOLANI have to save her, now that I got a weapon to find her. I have to find her, wherever she is.That thought kept ringing in my ear. I have only one mission, and that is to find her.I looked at the mirror in front of me, am I enough to find her? Even so, even if I’m not enough, I will find her.Amansinaya gave us rooms to sleep in. We are in separate rooms. Orlene and I slept alone in our rooms. I looked at my bed; it was easy to get comfortable with it.Our rooms were filled with oxygen. Amansinaya also said that the oxygen in our room will never run out, the same with our headgears.I walked down to the table beside my bed. I took my headgear and my sword. The kingdom is still filled with water for the mermaids and other aquatic animals to live.I wore my headgear as I walk outside. I looked around, so where is the training room she is saying?“Follow me, I will lead
NOLANWait, what?I looked at Amansinaya weirdly, is that really true? “You’re looking at me like I’m a big fat liar.” She said.I shook my head at her. If that is really true then, how ironic is that? In our world, we believed that creatures like them are only a myth. Then in this world, they believed that we, humans are myths.I didn’t respond to her, instead, I continued eating.Few minutes of an ear-shattering silence ensued when finally I broke it.“So, what will we do next? When will we start finding her?” I asked. Orlene’s attention was caught when I asked. We both looked at Amansinaya.Instead of paying attention to my question, she just enjoyed her meal. As if, she didn’t hear anything.I faked a cough to get her attention. She looked at Orlene, and me “Oh, sorry.” She said then stopped eatin
NOLAN“I think we should head back now.” I turned to Amansinaya when she spoke. I looked at her with my eyebrows rising.“Huh? What do you mean?” I asked. She moved her eyes on me before she spoke, “It’s already night and the whole place is dark! It’s not safe around here when it’s evening!” She exclaimed.E=Eh? But she’s a goddess, she can do anything!“But you’re a goddess, you can just use your powers, and don’t worry about us, we have weapons to protect ourselves!” That’s my point! I looked at Orlene, smirking. In addition, we have to find her as soon as possible. What if she’s not safe wherever she is right now?! What if she’s getting tortured by the…I don’t know, maybe the one that captured her!“I am safe. However not the tw
NOLANMy legs are now hurting. We have been walking for almost an hour now. We haven’t stopped or rested. I didn’t care if my legs are hurting so much as if they want to separate from my body. I looked at my watch. Amansinaya explained that the time here is not different from our time. We’ve been walking for quite a while yet we haven’t seen a single sign of the mermaid.“Let’s stop here.” Amansinaya turned her head to us. I looked at the place where we are. We’re in the middle of a forest. It’s not bad to camp here. Luckily, I bought myself a sleeping bag that I found in my room. After we’ve set up our own sleeping bags. We lay down staring at the stars displayed in the beautiful night sky.“Beautiful isn’t?” I looked at Amansinaya when she spoke.“Mm!” Orlene replied with a nod.“I always admire how they shine their light, unafraid of the darkness that was brought by the cold night.” Amansinaya continued.I nodded at her then looked at the sky. I wish you’re here so we could see th
NOLAN“AARGH!” I shouted as I jump towards the direction of the two Manananggals.I aimed my sword at them, ignoring the throbbing pain on my feet. I sliced their two ugly heads, green gooey fluid splashed as the time their heads were cut.Wow, I didn’t know I could do that!“AAHH!” I winced when I saw their heads, what the actual hell?! Their heads are freaking moving!I looked at the two Manananggals as they began to fall down onto the ground.I screamed as I fall. I looked at my feet, the pain got worst. Looks like the rock got freaking deeper! Now, how do I get it out?!I rested a bit, a heavy pain dawned on me. The pain and tiredness are eating me up. Slowly, my eyes started to close. Until I let myself give in to that sleepiness.“Hmm, was it painful?” Asherah spoke then she grinned. The sun started setting, s
NOLAN"That's what she said." Amansinaya added. I'm really confused.
NOLANI ran.I ran as fast as I could. She's near, I can sense it.I stopped and hid. I had to calm down, I'm shaking too much.S-She's devastating to look at. Her deep black eyes that reflect the void shows that she's not messing up. Her messy hair covered her whole face. Her dress that had once a beautiful and majestic color turned into a darker shade that made her horrifying."Come out now, wherever you are!" I heard her voice. I thought being near her was terrifying enough. But hiding in an unknown place where I can't see her is more terrifying. What if she's near? What if she's behind me?Goddammit! What the hell am I saying? I have freaking powers! Why am I so freaking coward huh?!What am I so fucking afraid of?!I'm all alone. We've hidden in different places. We panicked freaking too much!"You can't hide. I control this forest!" I could hear her vo
NOLAN"So, let's eat!" Niara joyfully shouted. We smiled as we looked at our food, in rhythm. I smiled, the food in our house was tastier, but here, it was more enjoyable with them.I took my spoon and fork. You might ask how a spoon and fork ended up here, well...I brought some.“You’re using that?” I weirdly looked at Arius. Damn, what is he expecting me to use? Of course, I’ll use utensils to eat properly.I nodded."Ohh, you're not using these?" Then he showed me his hands. Nah, no way that I'm gonna use that.Should I be using that? Right, Filipinos are accustomed to using their hands when eating. I was also taught how to use my hands, then again, I didn't like it.I'm more comfortable using utensils. When I was young, dad forced me to be 'etiquette' in eating. YES, ONLY IN EATING.Though, I didn't know why. I always thought that he
NOLAN"Woohoo!" Orlene screamed at the top of her lungs. We all looked at the beautiful and harmonious view. The world looked so small up here!"They looked so distant." I murmured. I looked everywhere, trying to find something. My sight drifted to Amansinaya when she spoke."Hey are we like—you know...gonna find her here? I mean she's a mermaid right? Wouldn't be more believable that she's at the depths of the sea?" She ranted. Then I wondered, she got a point."Yeah yeah! But we have to make sure that she's not here." Arius spoke. Amansinaya rolled her eyes."So...ungodly." Orlene whi
NOLANMy eyes widened as I saw myself glowing. It was me! I’m freaking glowing!I glared at Arius, like me, he’s also stunned.“Bro, HAHAHAHA you’re glowing you bastard!” He roared while looking at me funny. He’s not even helping!“Have any idea what happened?” I asked, then suddenly he became serious. He stopped laughing as he held his chin. Probably thinking of possibilities who could have done it or what happened to me. Then, like a bulb lit upon his head.“Ah! Maybe someone’s pulling a prank on you.” I looked at him in disbelief. Can’t he think of a more believable idea?“Bruh, I would believe you then again with your personality, I won’t.” He then looked at me dramatically, as if I’ve said something offensive.“Bro, that&rsquo
NOLANDamn! What was that?“Arius I said fricking stop you jerk!” We heard Niara’s scream from outside. Arius only gave her a burst of laughter.Minutes passed, Niara and Arius explained everything. Apparently, Niara’s mother was Anitun Tabu, the Goddess of the wind, while Arius’ father is Kidlat, the God of lightning. They’re so-called, demigod. A demigod is an offspring of a God and a mortal. However, there’s still something off. We both looked at Orlene when she spoke. “Wait! You said that your parents asked you to help us. Is there any reason why?” That’s what I’ve been thinking for quite a while! Niara and Arius both sighed, “We…actually don’t know.” I looked in front of me when Niara spoke.“We only know that Bathala ordered our parents.” Wait, Bathala?“WOOOW! Bathala as in the King of Gods?!” I winced when Orlene spoke.“Yep! You got it, Miss Pretty Beautiful!” Orlene blushed at Arius, who’s beside her. Bruh, this freaking guy. Then he kissed her hand.“Oh−” Orlene’s face is
NOLANI woke up. I stared at the sun. The morning breeze made me shiver, so cold!I yawned. Damn, why do I feel sleepy again?“Finally, you’re awake!” I heard Orlene spoke. I looked at her irritated. She’s freaking blocking the view from the beautiful sun!“What?” I asked her.“Dalikamata said to hurry up, we have a long journey that awaits us.” I was about to speak when I heard my stomach growled.I laughed awkwardly; right I haven’t eaten anything since last night.Orlene sighed at me, “Get up,” She stopped as she saw me standing up, slowly. “Hurry up and eat!” She said. After I stood up, I looked at Dalikamata. She’s looking at the sun. Maybe embracing its beauty, maybe she’s waiting for it to set.Amansinaya’s
