Chapter Six

By three o’clock that afternoon, Thelma had announced to Astrid that Darius wanted to have lunch with her. Her heart raced fast in her chest as she put on a silk flower-print dress, reaching the middle of her thighs.

“I see you’ve started to have your meal.” She said as she was led to the garden at the back of the house. She saw an array of different flowers, even the ones she never thought she could see in real life. Butterflies hovered above them in different colours, along with birds. It gave the place a serene feel.

She sat on the picnic bench, beside him. He said nothing as he downed his orange juice. “Why are we having lunch together? It's not really necessary.” She mumbled.

“Let’s just go by my rules.” He responded.

“I have rules that you need to follow, too.” She turned to look at him.

“Oh,” he seemed taken aback by her statement. “And what rules are those?” He asked, suddenly interested.

“I should be allowed do whatever I want.” She answered. Darius stared at her for a long while.

“But what happens when whatever you want to do contradicts my rules?” He smirked.

“W-Well, then I won’t do it.” She pouted.

For the second time that day, she was making Darius lose his control over himself. He just stopped talking and watched her eat from the corner of his eye.

Astrid nervously spread marmalade on a slice of bread. Darius’s eyes almost bulged out as she licked the marmalade off the butter knife. She paused as she saw his face. “What?” She questioned innocently, having no idea of what effect she had on him.

“Darius Titan.”

They both looked up and saw a woman looking at them. Darius tensed up as he saw her. “Mother...” His voice broke before he could say anything else.

Astrid and Darius stood up immediately. She slowly walked toward them, never taking her eyes off Astrid. “You fool,” she looked at her son this time. “When were you going to tell me?”

“I didn’t think that you would want to hear me out.” He replied with a soft voice. Astrid immediately knew that he could only act as the big, bad wolf to everyone else, but his mother was his weakness.

“You should have tried.” She turned back to Astrid. “She’s very beautiful.” She walked closer and took Astrid’s hands in hers. “What is your name, dear?”

“Astrid.” Astrid replied, looking down. She never expected to meet his mother this soon. What would happen now?

“Astrid. How lovely.” His mother’s Greek accent rolled down her tongue freely.

She was beautiful, standing tall at five feet, eight inches. That was two inches taller than Astrid and five inches shorter than Darius. Her eyes were the brightest brown, similar to Darius’s eye colour under the influence of good lighting. Her black hair was straight and long, reaching the middle of her back.

“Call me Nikoleta.” She smiled and pulled Astrid into a hug, frowning at her son. “Sit.” Nikoleta ordered as she sat across from them.

They both sat slowly, still recovering from the shock of seeing her. “I want to know everything; how and where you met, how you both knew you were in love, and why you never told me.” She said the last part while glaring at Darius.

“We met at—”

“Let her answer.” Nikoleta stopped Darius from answering.

“Well, there was this project he had with my father, and we happened to meet in my hometown, back in England. We both didn’t realize we were in love at once. It just happened.” Astrid let the lie come out of her smoothly, impressing even Darius.

“And why didn’t you tell me?” Nikoleta looked at her son with apprehension.

“You were angry at me.” He said back.

“You’ve heard the stories about my son, haven’t you?” She asked Astrid. Astrid nodded. “And you still want to marry him? It doesn’t change how you feel about him?”

“What can I say? Love catches you by surprise. Doesn’t it, sweetheart?” Astrid smiled sweetly at Darius.

“It does. It really does.” His eyes raked her body as he answered. Her cheeks reddened as she saw what he was doing.

“Then I don’t object. If you want to get married, go ahead and get married.” Nikoleta smiled at them.

“Will you come back home?” Darius was quick to ask.

“Did you miss me?” She smirked at him.

“You know damn well I did.” He had a pleading look in his eyes.

“As punishment for not telling me about your fiancée, I’ll move back in after a month.” She told him.

“As long as you’re coming back, it's alright.” He smiled.

“Well I just came to confirm what I saw on TV. I’ll be heading back now.” Nikoleta stood up and kissed Astrid’s forehead. “Take care, my love.” She whispered.

“What about me?” Darius frowned, expecting Nikoleta to shower him with similar affection.

“You won’t get anything. That’s another punishment.” She pulled his ear and walked away.

“You love her.” Astrid said, looking at him.

“I do.” He nodded, watching his mother’s retreating figure.

“What’s going to happen when she moves in next month?” She inquired.

“Of course, we can’t break things off after a month.; it’ll be suspicious. A few months after that will do.” He answered.

“My parents won’t like this.” Astrid shook her head.

“You don’t have to tell them it’s all an act.” He shrugged.

“I already told them. In my defence, that was before you told me not to tell anyone. And they're my parents. You don’t expect them to be in the dark about this.” She said.

“Why didn’t you tell me this sooner?! You know what it is for us to have people who know about this, roaming freely?!” He raised his voice at her.

“I know they won’t tell anyone.” She defended.

“Still, Astrid. They need to be protected, even. When people find out that they’re your parents, they’ll have them under their gazes everyday! Did you think the paparazzi would just let this slide?” He stood up.

Astrid didn’t think of that before agreeing to the whole thing. She never thought of the effect it would have on her family. “What do we do now?” She asked.

“We’ll have them transported here tomorrow morning. Call them and make them understand.” He ordered, making calls of his own to the people who would be in charge of transporting her parents.

After arguing and shouting for minutes, Astrid’s parents decided to come over. After all, they needed to be there for their daughter. “I’ll just go inside. I’m not that hungry.” Astrid announced and walked away, making Darius regret raising his voice at her.

What was happening to him?

Astrid couldn’t make it for dinner later that night. Her monthly period would soon visit, so she had early cramps to show for it. Thelma had made herbal tea to help ease the pain. . Darius ate downstairs, worried. Astrid had not told him why she was in so much pain. He just knew her stomach ached, and that she could barely eat. He was considering going to bed early when his phone rang. “What do you want?” He spoke into the phone immediately he picked it up. “You know what I want.” A young woman's voice spoke slowly and seductively to him. “I really don't have time for this right now, Selene.” He sighed tiredly. “Why didn't you tell me you had a woman in your life that you were serious about? What’s so special about this particular woman?” Her voice held anger, this time. “Is that what this is about?” He asked. “Of course, it is! You have no idea how ridiculous I feel right now. Darius was frozen in place, too deep in his own thoughts to see that Selene had opened the door. At least, she was smart enough to not open it fully and expose her naked body. “Hi, who are you?” Selene asked, acting like she didn't know who Astrid was. “Have you seen Darius around? I need to speak with him.” Astrid said, playing calm. A little too calm for someone who found another woman in her fiancé's room. What could she do, really? Her stomach still had a mild ache. Besides, why would she want to start a random fight over a man? “I think he went out.” Selene lied smoothly. There was silence as the two women stared at each other for a long time. “I'm sorry, do I... know you?” Selene frowned, exerting a form of dominance to intimidate Astrid. “I don't think we've met. Do you work here?” Astrid asked, having every idea how insulted it would make Selene feel. She was no idiot to know that Selene was having an intimate relationship with Darius.

As Astrid pulled Darius in for a kiss, he didn't hesitate to return the gesture. He had wanted to kiss her first, but he remembered how she disapproved of it when he did it before. Now that she had done it herself, there was nothing to feel bad for. In fact, he had never felt that relieved in a long time. Finally realizing what she was doing, Astrid pulled away and looked at him with her eyes wide open. “I'm so sorry! I didn't know what I was doing. This is horrible.” She walked to the balcony to get fresh air, mortified. “Good night!” Astrid could hear the laughter in Darius's voice as he said it. She had totally embarrassed herself. What was she thinking, kissing him out of the blue? What would he think of her now? As she heard the slam of the door, she relaxed on the recliner that faced the outside world and gave a perfect view of the plain lands surrounding the house. Astrid always loved to look at the night sky. Something about the stars

Astrid sat alone in the garden until nightfall. Her parents would arrive anytime soon, and she had to be there to make sure nothing went wrong. She walked to the dining hall, where she found Darius, Joaquin, Derek, and Ki-woo sleeping with their heads on the table. Joaquin had a pencil stuck to his face, and Astrid couldn't help but laugh at the cuteness of all of them combined. Darius was a good-looking man. Nobody could deny that he sure had good-looking friends. Darius's eyes shot open immediately and he sat up, looking around. Astrid noticed that his tousled hair made him look quite the opposite of his usual self. He was always so put together, one would think he slept and woke up in a perfect state. Astrid giggled at the look of his hair. He looked at her in confusion before flexing his neck and stretching. “What's so funny?” He questioned, the thickness of voice doubling since he just woke up. “You should see your hair.” She replied.

Waking up the next morning, Astrid found Darius sitting on his desk and writing swiftly in a large book, a phone placed between his ear and his shoulder. “I just told you, Joaquin! Call the architects and the civil engineers today. I'll pay any amount. Cancel all my meetings.” He instructed. His voice seemed shaky. “I don't have time for jokes, dammit!” He shouted over the phone. “She's not doing too well, you know that. I have to see her now.” He stood up and closed the book. “Yes. I'll call you when I see her. Take care of the office for me.” He hung up and took deep, shaky breaths. Astrid saw that his hands were having serious tremors. He grabbed fistfuls of his hair and turned to the bed. “What's wrong?” Astrid frowned, standing up. “My mother. She's sick. I have to go now.” He answered, walking out of the room. “Let me come with you.” She offered, wanting to see Nikoleta. “No. Stay right here. I'll be back.” He opened the

Darius and Astrid managed to sneak out of the dining hall, while their parents talked and laughed together. Darius stopped in front of his play room and turned to Astrid. “You can’t tell anyone about this.” He told her. “Who would I tell?” She shrugged, highly curious to know what would happen behind the door. He opened the door and let her walk in first. Cautiously, Astrid entered the room and frowned. “This is where you torture women.” She said like it was a major discovery. It was, at least to her. “I don’t torture. I give them what they need. They just don't know that they need it” He corrected her, locking the door. “You inflict pain on them. Seems like torture to me. I'm sure the walls in here are not even soundproof.” She argued. “Well, the pain works hand in hand with the pleasure. You see, pain in the most pleasurable way makes you question your life choices. Do you want to broaden your sexual exp

Darius remained dazed, not knowing how to react. Didn't she want him? He had never been rejected before. It was a new feeling, a strike to his ego. Now that he knew how it felt, he didn't like any moment of it. Especially because of the fact that he wanted—no, he needed—Astrid. He walked out of the room and locked it, walking towards her room. “Astrid?” He knocked on her door. “Go away.” She replied. “This is my house.” He snapped, quite aggravated that she was ordering him around. “Well, maybe I'll go away.” The door swung open and she walked past him, heading to the staircase. “Why do you think I came here in the first place? I need you to communicate your feelings with me.” He followed her down the stairs. Astrid turned to face him and sighed. “That's the problem with this whole thing, Darius. Feelings. Am I supposed to even feel something? Why did we just do that? It's been thr

“Can we talk?” Darius said as he found Astrid alone in the garden. It was some minutes past midnight. She had found it hard to sleep, so she decided to watch the stars while enjoying the fireflies in the garden. “Sure.” She replied, her concentration still on the moon. He cleared his throat, and she turned to look at him. “You wanted to talk?” She reminded him. “Yes. About what happened today. We can’t let this cause a misunderstanding between us.” He started. “I believe it already has.” She replied, surprisingly calm. “Well we have to clear it up. I can't keep living in a house where I have issues with someone, and we can’t hash it out like the two adults we are.” He spoke sternly, almost taking his tone to his business meeting level. “What’s there to talk about, exactly? We already cleared this up. What’s left is for us to carry on with the act and break it off as soon as we can.” She shrugged. “I was thi

Astrid had gone into a frozen state as Selene cried out in pain mingled with terror, the blood trailing down her legs in bursts of extremely dark red clots.“Help me, Astrid! Please! My baby!” Selene’s voice, perhaps because this time it was directed at Astrid, brought Astrid out of her shocked state as she rushed down to get help from the security guards stationed outside.“We need help in getting to the hospital, now!” she screamed as she got out of the house, the men clad in black clothing rushing in to follow her into Selene’s room, where she was sluggishly attempting to get up through the mess that was her blood. With a little bit of hesitation and fear, the security officials managed to carry Selene down and into one of the cars. Astrid instructed Laila, the babysitter, to help look after Dahlia until she returned.Joining Selene in the car as they rushed over to the hospital, Astrid made attempts to relieve Selene as she dialled Darius’ number. Weeks passed by too quickly for Astrid to grasp. She maintained a steady communication with her parents back in London. As the days passed, she was slowly starting to accept that she could run away from her feelings all she wanted, but she would always circle back to Darius Titan. Even at that, she could not brush Selene aside. It was almost impossible to cut her out of the picture, especially now that she was getting more noticeable in the picture with how fast her stomach was starting to show bumps. Astrid knew for a fact that even if she made an attempt at shoving Selene out of the window and dusting her hands at the act, she would only be able to do it in the back of her mind. The bigger Selene’s stomach grew, the more time she weaned out of Darius to spend time with her. Just a little tired is all.” She shot him an assuring smile, trying hard to convince herself even more than she was trying to convince him.“Will you at least talk to me if you feel like talking about it?” Astrid was on the verge of breaking down at the weight of it all. It was painfully obvious that Darius was trying to be who he wasn’t the first time she was with him, but she didn’t want him to go back into his cold shell. What was it that she could possibly say? “Is something wrong?” Astrid asked, my brows furrowed in a worried frown at how angry Cassia looked. Cassia headed for the bed and placed the branded Tiffany and Co. bag on the bedside table as she sat beside Astrid. “Tell me why I decided to come say hi and give you and Dahlia a little present, and the first person I see in this house is Selene.” “Oh,” Astrid said in realization as she chuckled mirthlessly. “Well, that happened. She got kicked out, or so she said. She doesn’t even want him to find her a new apartment. I guess she lives here now.” “And you’re just going to sit here and take it?” She threw her a questioning stare as Astrid shrugged, an attempt at nonchalance. Cassia turned to fully face Astrid, studying her face. Every line and every facial expression in that moment, she was determined to catch. We agreed on that.”“Well, unfortunate circumstances came up. I was at the hospital for a while and I had to pay the bills with it.” Selene shrugged with an air of indifference.Astrid did not want to hear the rest of it, but she didn’t know how to leave.
