"How about we go out tonight," Chloe suggested after dinner. Krystie was not a fool to not have realized that she was doing all this for her. Chloe was not a social person, obviously she wanted her to feel better from the betrayal, and she appreciated it because she really needed it.

Krystie and Chloe sat at the table, several bottles of liquor spread across the table. Mark, Krystie's colleague sat helplessly beside them. Watching Krystie sad broke his heart, he had always warned her about Alex and Cassandra, but never once had she headed to his warnings. But then, it wasn't the time to play blame games. He was her friend and always willing to support her in whatever decision she took.

Krystie wanted to drown all that she was feeling inside, all her pains which had resulted from the two people she used to trust.

Krystie shot Mark with a knowing look. She was very sure the reason why Mark had accompanied her was not entirely because she of her. After all, watching the way he looked at her younger sister she was very sure she hadn't mistaken it. It was the very same look she used to look at Alex with. Mark had feelings for Chloe!

Krystie had taken several shots of beer and was still asking for much more until all the bottles on the table were finally cleared, forcing them to clink their glasses whenever they paused drinking.

"Krystie, I think you should stop drinking already, you are drunk," Mark suggested as he tried to snatch the bottle from Krystie's grasp.

Krystie spared him a drunken glance before chuckling, "Who is drunk?"

At that stage, Mark was very sure that there was a headache on the way. Every time Krystie was drunk, there was always a drama or two accompanying them. She had once walked to the DJ's patio and forced him to surrender the work to her.

Krystie had just forcefully pulled back the bottle from Mark's grasp when she heard a familiar voice behind her. The voice that used to make her blush, and her stomach flip now disgusted her. She clenched her jaw, her fingers tightening around the glass.

Chloe and Mark stiffened beside her, exchanging uneasy glances.

"Baby, can I talk to you. Please just let me explain to you," Alex had spoken from behind. Krystie slowly turned around to meet Alex and Cassandra. She rolled her eyes in return. She felt those two were hypocrites and a match made in heaven.

"Alex," she called, her voice laced with cold amusement. "What more do you want from me? Haven't you done enough? Or are you here to rub it in my face that my so-called best friend is now your girlfriend?" Krystie blurted shocking Mark and Chloe, who looked at each other in surprise. Alex bent his head in shame while Cassandra only smirked.

"You two can have each other, I'm no longer interested in your childish games." Krystie declared as she drowned a bottle from the table. By the time Mark had jumped into action to take the bottle from her, it was too late already because there was no more liquor in the bottle.

"I have a new boyfriend, so if you will excuse me." Krystie had turned her face towards the entrance when suddenly an idea struck her mind. She had seen two men walk in, one of them taller with a well-built physique but very cold at a glance. Krystie presumed that they were some kind of businessmen from their outfits.

Krystie wanted to walk to the second guy who had a warm aura around himself compared to the first guy. Just before she could take a step ahead, the guy left to answer his phone.

Krystie's eyes shone with a new idea, a dangerous kind that frightened Mark and Chloe because Krystie's eyes only shone that bright when she had something terrible cooking up in her mind.

"I will be back soon," Krystie had spoken sluggishly and left, staggering towards the main entrance of the hotel. The liquor had already kicked in her brain system, and everyone watched her not very sure of what exactly she was up to.

"Krystie, wait..." Mark started, but she was already gone.

Mark, Chloe, Cassandra and Alex's gaze had followed her until she stopped before a certain young man.

She grabbed the man’s tie, pulled him down to her level, and whispered something in his ear. His brows lifted in surprise, and then his lips curved into an amused smirk before he nodded.

"Hello stranger, can you please help me? Just play along, and I will pay you well, I promise!" Krystie had said to the man she had approached at the entrance of the hotel, just before he had taken a step in.

Before the young man could say a thing, Krystie had pulled him with herself to the table where others sat, her arms intertwined in his.

"Here, I told you. This is my boyfriend. He is here to pick me up, right sweetheart?" Krystie had declared, leaving everyone speechless.

"Come on baby, you don't have to hook up with some random guy to make me jealous," Alex had declared when he watched the man's shocked expression.

"Krystie, you don't have to do that just to get Alex's attention, he is not interested in you!" Cassandra had interjected mockingly, rolling her eyes in the process.

Krystie laughed out loudly, "I knew you wouldn't believe me. I will prove it to you," she spoke. And then, to their horror, she did exactly what Mark and Chloe feared. She had placed her hands on the back of his neck before she tiptoed and kissed him.

Alex groaned while Mark cursed under his breath. The man blinked in surprise at her but didn’t pull away. He didn't expect that was the kind of help she wanted from him.

Gasps erupted from everyone on the table. Chloe’s jaw nearly hit the floor. Her expression was just very funny. Mark, frozen in place, muttered, scratching his neck embarrassed, "Oh, there it is. She has lost it this time."

The man had played along, his hands settling lightly on her waist as he returned the kiss with a smirk against her lips.

Then, as if suddenly remembering where she was, and everyone was watching them, Krystie pulled away, her breath a little ragged. She swayed slightly, and the man caught her waist, steadying her.

Alex’s face darkened even more. "That’s enough, Krystie," he gritted out, his voice low with barely restrained anger. " I can't believe you have been cheating on me!"

He trampled his feet on the ground and left the room, disappearing into the dark night. Cassandra lingered for a moment before she, too, walked away.

Chloe finally found her voice and rushed forward, grabbing Krystie’s arm. "They have left already, let's go back to the table."

Krystie had flashed the young man with a small drunken smile. "Thanks for the save, handsome. You kiss better than him, you know," she flirtatiously winked at him, "I owe you one. I will repay you."

The man had chuckled. "It was my pleasure."

Immediately Chloe had pulled her away before she could say more.

The bartender, a man in his late thirties was mixing a drink when Cassandra approached the counter. She leaned in slightly and slid a bill across the counter, lowering her voice to ensure nobody else heard her, "I need a favour," she murmured. The bartender glances at the bill and then at her. He had heard that phrase more than he could count. "Depends on the favour," he whispered too, as he slipped the bill into his jacket pocket. Cassandra shot him with a sweet smile as she pointed at the table where Krystie sat. "You see that blonde woman in the red dress at that table, drinking with friends. I need her drink to be a little special." The bartender's expression hardened, pushing the bill back from her jacket pocket. "I'm very sorry madam, but I can't help you. We don’t do that here." Cassandra smirked, unfazed. "Oh, come on. It’s harmless." She passed him a liquid in a small bottle. "Just a little something to loosen her up a bit. You look like a man who understands business.

"Krystie, I think you should slow down already, you have already taken a whole bottle and you're already tipsy. It is not your fault that he cheated on you, it's because he was a fool," Mark reached out to the bottle that she was drowning. Krystie had been crying, lamenting how she had caused an end to their relationship because she hadn't given her boyfriend any attention as she was always busy with work. She had also claimed that she had already moved on from him, and that she didn't care anymore. Mark and Chloe were not fools to not have realized that no matter how much Krystie acted like she didn't care at all and that she had already moved on from Alex, the truth remained that she was still so much in love with him, and even her act of kissing a stranger was only to provoke Alex, she still cared and that was what hurt her the most. At the moment Krystie was very drunk, and for some unknown reason she was feeling uncomfortably dizzy and nauseous, excusing herself from the tabl

As Lucian strode down the corridor to his room, his mind wandering far away, he felt he heard some commotions, but minding his own business he was tempted to dismiss the commotion echoing around him and just walk by. Memories of the enigmatic woman's kiss lingered, tugging at his focus. Lucian could recall the softness of her lips, the warmth of her breath, and the subtle taste of her lips. The gentle touch of her hand at the back of his neck, and the electricity that had sparked between them stood out in his memory. Buried deep in his thoughts, Lucian halted. He had heard a familiar voice break through the chaos, the same voice that had sought his aid at the hotel's entrance, it felt like that of someone in need, helpless, barely audible. Not very sure whether he was hallucinating or something, Lucian stood in place. He wanted to be sure that it was the same voice, and sure enough, he heard it once more. "Help me! Somebody help me please!" The faint whisper rang once more in Luc

Krystie stepped out of the hotel, her heart racing from running, and her eyes filled with tears. Her once elegant dress now hung torn and tattered, a reflection of a rough night that she had shared with a stranger. Her mid-thighs hurt, and her legs felt jelly. She didn't have any strength but the fear of facing the young guy was more than the pain she was feeling. Memories of betrayal flooded her mind, each step echoing the pain she had in her heart as she ran across to her car. Just as she reached her parked car, a familiar figure emerged from the shadows. It was Alex, her ex-boyfriend, the one who had shattered her heart into a million irreparable pieces. His presence sent a shiver down her spine, from anger, bitterness and disappointment. However, she refused to show any sign of weakness, not before this jerk who had betrayed her love. "Krystie," Alex called out, his voice dripping with arrogance, closing the difference between them, cornering her between the car and him. "I

Cassandra sat on her seat in the dimly lit room, fuming with anger, her gaze piercing through the shadows to meet the eyes of five men kneeling before her. Each had several injuries on the face and bandages on their arms. The air was thick with tension as they watched her trembling with fear. "You guys are nothing but failures, I should have known earlier before entrusting you with such a task. Was it so hard for you to accomplish such a simple task?" Cassandra's tone rang, full of anger for their failure as she stood from her mighty chair and started walking around circling them. "And what happened to you all? Why do you have wounds all over your body?" Cassandra asked rolling her devilish hawk's eyes. The group leader volunteered and explained how Krystie was rescued by a certain guy who had inflicted them with all the injuries. After the explanation, Cassandra couldn't help but mockingly laugh at them before slapping them, how weak were they exactly so as beaten by a single guy

Krystie immediately arrived home and took notice of two people who were cuddled on the sofa. Chloe was sleeping on Mark's lap while Mark held her protectively. A smile crept at the corners of her lips, and without disturbing them, she walked past them to her room to clean up. She was feeling stuffed, and the Lucian guy cologne still lingered on her body. Once Krystie was done, she came back down only to find them awake. Without a word, Krystie, too, sat opposite them, took her phone and started playing video games. She was so tired that she had asked for a day off from work, which would be so unusual of her. Chloe and Mark sat on the sofa, looking at Krystie as if she had grown horns. They appeared exhausted, with dark circles under their eyes and drooping eyelids. Clearly, they had not slept at all. Krystie completely ignored them and let them stare at her all they wanted. She was not going to answer something that they had not asked her. She let the staring competition go on unti

Lucian, who stood at the door not very sure whether he was at the right address, was stunned when the door was roughly opened, "What else do you want? Just do whatever you want. I am not interested in you all; you can have each other for all I care, that is none of my business!" Not very sure whether the outburst was meant for him or not Lucian once more rang the bell. Irked up, Krystie opened the door. She wanted to give the duo an earful, but that's until she saw who stood before her. Startled by the unexpected visitor, she cautiously opened the door, her eyes widening in surprise at the sight of Lucian standing there. "Lucian, what are you doing here?" Krystie asked, her voice tinged with apprehension, she had known his name when Alex had earlier on called him out. Lucian felt so happy hearing her call him by his name. Without waiting for an invitation, Lucian strode into the apartment, his demeanour self-assured. He ignored Krystie's question and instead welcomed himself in

Krystie's heart raced as she stood outside the imposing doors of the city hall office. It was almost the agreed time, just five minutes to eight. She couldn't believe she was here, about to get a marriage license with a man she barely knew. But the threat of a lawsuit from Lucian hung over her head like a dark cloud. "If that's your final answer, then I have no choice but to take legal action against you." These words were stuck in her mind, making Krystie wonder who the hell in this world takes responsibility for their one-night stand by marrying them! Everything had started with her reckless decision last night when she nursed her broken heart, drowning her sorrows in cheap drinks that she was not careful to end up spiked. Krystie regretted it because that one night stand had turned into a nightmare when Lucian had showed up on her doorstep the previous day demanding her to take responsibility for him by accompanying him to the bureau office. Krystie felt a shiver run down h

  • Because you loved me    Chapter 70.

Mr King stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of his private office, his sharp gaze fixed on the city skyline. His brother still lay in the hospital bed, barely alive. The doctors had told him the chances of him waking up were only five per cent, or he might end up in a vegetable state because of the damage to the brain. The thought that the man who had done all this to his brother was walking around freely irked him to the core, and tonight he was going to make him pay, even if it meant shedding his own blood. Leo entered the room snapping him from his thoughts. "The men are ready, boss. We have got eyes on the big boss’s main warehouse near the port. Word is, a shipment is coming in tonight with illegal firearms." Mr. King turned with a playful smirk at the corner of his mouth. "Good. Tell them to move immediately. No mistakes." Leo nodded and stepped away hurriedly to relay the command. Mr King reached for the drawer where the folder Joel had sent him several weeks ago la

  • Because you loved me    Chapter 69.

Mr. King sat in his luxurious office, his mind elsewhere. His fingers tapped impatiently against the polished surface of his desk while his other hand gripped his phone tightly. It was already three days. Three damn days without a single word from his brother. His younger brother had never gone this long without answering his calls or at least checking in. He had a bad premonition about it! Mr King exhaled sharply, rubbing his temple. His sources inside the big boss’s operations had gone quiet too, which only deepened his unease. Something was wrong. His phone buzzed, jolting him from his thoughts. It was an unknown number. Frowning, he hesitated before answering. "Who is this?" His voice was sharp and demanding. Silence. Then a distorted voice, as if through a voice changer. "Your brother is in critical condition at St. Lucy's Hospital." A cold chill ran through Mr King's spine. His grip tightened on the phone. "What the hell are you talking about? Who are you?" "Wh

The meeting room inside the warehouse was dimly lit with only a single overhead light. Across the wooden table, the men seated around with tension on their faces. The big boss sat at the head of the table, his gloved fingers tapping rhythmically against the wooden table. His dark mask hid his expression, but the sharp glint in his eyes was enough to send chills through the men seated before him. His patience had run out. Ben stood beside him silently, watching as the others shifted uncomfortably in their seats. Every man in the room knew that meetings like these never ended well. Someone wasn’t going to walk out of this room alive. The big boss finally spoke, his voice calm. "We have a big problem!" He leaned back in his chair. "You see, everything has been going to hell lately. Our plan was interfered with, the dock was wiped clean, our men tortured, and Dr Lawrence returned to us in a state that not even the devil himself would wish upon his worst enemy. He let the words s

  • Because you loved me    Chapter 67.

The big boss stood at the corner of the warehouse looking out of the window. His dark mask covered his face as always. Things had started going wrong! The warehouse was silent except for the chirping of the birds outside. Ben, his right-hand man, stood beside him, tense. He was afraid the boss might lash out at him. "Boss, I think it's kind of strange, everything is so wrong right now. We still haven’t found Dr. Lawrence. It’s like he disappeared off the face of the earth. At the dock, everything was wiped out clean. I think we have a mole in our group." The big boss exhaled sharply, rubbing his temples. "Lawrence, that bastard ruined everything. And now he’s hiding?" His voice was deadly calm, but everyone in the room knew what that meant, someone was going to die tonight. "About a mole, I have noticed that too. Don't worry about it. I'll handle everything in today's meeting. Make sure that boy also attends, I want to deal with him tonight." The big boss took a seat at the table.

The sirens grew louder as the cars made their way to Dock 47. The stench of gunpowder, blood and bodies scattered like discarded chess pieces in the area. Two black SUVs with tinted windows screeched to a halt. Armed men dressed in black tactical gear spilt out. Their faces were masked, they had been tracking the van since it left the hospital. They were Krystie's people, not the police. The GPS trackers hidden inside the cartons had led them here. The sirens were only to scare everyone away. "Secure the area and clean everything!" barked the team leader, a man with a sharp jawline and piercing grey eyes that missed nothing. Inside the cartons, the doctors and nurses had begun to stir, groggy from the sedatives. Panic flashed across their faces as the realization set in, everything foggy in their minds. One of the men yanked the tape off a doctor’s mouth. The doctor gasped, coughing violently as he tried to speak. "Please help us," he croaked, his voice raw from dehydration.

Dr Lawrence’s eyes fluttered open. A sharp, metallic scent filled the air, the cold dampness of the room made him shiver. His head throbbed with pain, a dull ache from the back where he had been struck. He tried to move, but his arms were bound tightly behind a metal chair, his legs shackled to the floor. The faint sound of waves crashing hinted that they were near the coast. Perhaps Italy, from the faint accent in the whispered words exchanged around him. As his vision cleared, he took in his surroundings. He was in a vast, abandoned warehouse somewhere unfamiliar. His heart raced with panic when he noticed the men surrounding him. They weren’t the big boss’s men. They were fierce, sharp-eyed men dressed in black, their postures rigid with discipline. Some had scars and others bore tattoos with symbols he couldn’t recognize, but all of them radiated the same silent threat. Their faces were cold, emotionless, and deadly. "Where am I?" Dr Lawrence asked drawing the attention o

The hospital corridors were very silent. Krystie, Lucian, and his team of trusted allies walked through, dressed in scrubs and surgical masks. "Let me check on Chloe first," Krystie whispered to Lucian as she peeled away from the group. She reached the door and paused, her heart pounding in her chest. "Inject her now. She's the next one for the procedure," a cold voice ordered from inside. Krystie’s eyes flashed with fury. Without hesitation, she kicked the door open. Two masked nurses turned in shock, one holding a syringe filled with a clear liquid. Chloe lay on the bed helplessly, her face pale from fear of what would happen if Krystie didn't make it on time. Krystie grabbed the nurse with the syringe, twisting his wrist until the needle clattered to the floor. With a swift punch to his jaw, he crumpled. The second nurse lunged at her, but she was faster, driving her elbow into his throat before sweeping his legs out from under him. He hit the floor with a thud. Krystie to

Krystie, Chloe, and Lucian sat in the living, each one deep in their thoughts. Krystie’s phone buzzed, breaking through the silence. She picked it up, her eyes narrowing as she read the message: Boss, there is another unauthorized surgery scheduled soon. Details are vague, but it’s happening within the next few days. Nancy. Krystie’s jaw tightened. She stood abruptly pacing around the room. They are not going to stop any soon, there's another scheduled surgery happening soon, she muttered, her voice low Lucian’s eyes darkened, but Chloe spoke first. "Then we need to stop them. We can’t sit here while people out there need our help. That's what Papa taught us. Krystie shook her head in frustration. "Exactly. But I don't know how to help them. I can’t go back into the hospital without drawing attention. I’m still under investigation. I was suspended, remember." A deafening silence followed until Chloe broke it. "Then that's the point where my plan comes into the picture. I t

The blood-stained envelope lay on the table, its edges crumpled. Krystie stared at it with a pounding heart. Chloe and Lucian sat across from her, anticipation evident on their faces. The silence between them was almost deafening. Krystie’s heart raced as she finally tore it open. The contents spilt out across the table, a stack of photographs faded with time, and a small note written in Cassandra's handwriting. Krystie reached for them with trembling fingers, afraid of what she might see. Chloe’s gasped, her fingers flying to her mouth. "Oh my God…" she whispered, her eyes darting from photo to photo. The first photo showed a strikingly handsome young man with piercing dark eyes and a charismatic smile. He was laughing, caught mid-motion, his arm around someone just out of frame. Krystie’s breath hitched. She recognized him from the countless times Lucian had mentioned him. Damien! Lucian’s elder brother. The same brother who had been murdered the day Krystie’s parents died
