Without a moment's hesitation, Zoey seized Carol's hand and wept bitterly.

"Mom, our family and Harlan's were never a good match. All his relatives are people of considerable standing. I've been busting my butt for the Englers for two years, trying to do everything right. Luckily, my in-laws are open-minded and haven't looked down on my background.
