ONE MONTH LATER
A pair of eyes that opened, the white lights of a room that she recognized after having woken up in it for so long. Time had passed and time was surely going to continue passing there, enclosed in those four walls.
And as she did every morning, Paula put her hands to her face. The bandages were still there and were surely going to continue for a long time to come. She closed her eyes once more. She didn't know how much longer she was going to resist not only feeling how the bandages stung but also how the pain increased along with the itching.
The door to her room was knocked. It must have been the same time to take her medication.
"How are you doing?" Asked that man with a thick voice.
Paula just denied. Maximilian approached until he could put the tray with her breakfast and her medications near the bed.
"The time for the medication has arrived, have you felt any additional pain?”
Paula got out of bed little by little. "I just want you to take off these damn bandages and see what has happened to my face.”
Maximilian lowered his head. He couldn't do any of that. Not until he was sure of what he truly was already sure of.
"Why don't you tell me anything?” Paula asked since whenever she made a comment like that he stayed silent.
"No, not at all, I'm just listening to you.”
Paula took the glass of water from Maximilian's hand along with the pill. All she wanted was for the itch to go away.
"Do you want me to help you eat?” Maximilian asked, being the good doctor he always was with all his patients.
She shook her head and took the food from the plates, caring little if it was rude of her to take it with her hands.
Once again, like all those times, Maximilian looked at Paula without her realizing it. The wounds on her hands were already healing but it was logical that there would be many scars. He couldn't even imagine what those on her face could be like if at the moment she arrived all he knew was that she was disfigured, he had done everything so that she could look like the woman she should have been but the truth is that not even everything neither knowledge nor preparation made that possible.
The more he looked at her, the more he realized that there was something in her that had made her live beyond the survival instinct. Surely a dark past like the one we all have.
"Maximilian, where are you?!” Someone shouted from outside the room.
"I think they're talking to you," said Paula, eating.
Maximilian left the room and went to where Manuel had called him.
Paula looked up seeing Maximilian's back. She had spent a month in that house, more than a month, and all she could think about was the help he had given her in all that time. He must have been one of the few good people in the world, although the truth was that good people didn't exist, they always wanted something in return.
Then Paula got out of bed. If it wasn't that day, it would never be since day and night she had Maximilian close to her so that she wouldn't do something crazy.
Feeling the cold floor under her feet, she approached the door from where she could hear Maximilian talking to Manuel, the older man who lived with him and until that moment he still did not know the relationship they had. Maybe, father and son.
"Three clients come today, one of them so you can remove the change bandage on her face and the other two just so you can take off a few extra years.”
"Have you already told them about the price?”
"You completely agree!” Manuel answered.
Everything seemed to be that Maximilian was going to have a busy day. Now that she had heard him better, she realized that Maximilian was a great doctor, a doctor full of mysteries who worked in his own home, as if he did not want anyone to discover him.
Once again, Paula returned to bed upon learning that Maximilian was returning. She already had her plan, it would be a busy afternoon for her and she only needed ten minutes so she could find out the truth.
"Paula?”
She looked up.
"I will be in my office for the next four or five hours, if you need anything just ask Manuel, if the pain bothers you, just tell him and he will tell me.”
Paula nodded. "I'll rest for a while.”
"I'll see you later.”
That's how that month had gone. Paula's wounds tried to heal while every night she remembered how her family had made fun of her countless times. That was what kept her alive, that was what had made her get here despite the blood loss. And the more she tried to bring back the innocent girl that everyone used in their favor, the more she realized that or could, that it was hatred and the thirst for revenge that made her live.
She waited for more than half an hour in her bed, no steps from Manuel, probably Maximilian working in his office. It was her time to act.
Carefully, once again feeling the cold floor under her feet, she approached the furniture that was in front of her bed and in which Maximilian was guiding a pile of papers that she did not have but sooner or later she was going to do so, and looking through all those things, she managed to find what she wanted. A brush with a mirror behind it. Maximilian, after all, had not managed to hide all the mirrors.
Sitting on the cold floor, she began to pull out her bandages, faster and faster, she felt that at any moment the door would open and it would be Maximilian who would not let her see how her face had turned out.
The brown hair began to be reborn, the bandages were disappearing, the mirror was ready to give her the reflection she wanted to see.
She had finally made it, two or three more turns and she would see her face. The bandages fell completely, then Paula's scarred hands lifted the brush and then, very carefully, turned it over, opened her eyes and... in the reflection found what she would never have thought she would find in herself.
"My face, what happened to my face?! Help, my face!" She screamed with all her might.

In his usual office, with a beautiful smile on Maximilian's masculine face, he gladly received the words of that woman of no more than thirty years old who was in front of him.
"You've done a good job! No one is going to recognize me, not the police, not anyone,” said the woman, the wife of a gangster. "The truth is that I can't believe that being so talented you are in this place, having to do the most successful operations at home.”
Maximilian smiled. He didn't care at all about being recognized, he just wanted to be paid well.
"Well, I'll give you a prescription for the medications you should take and the massages you should do.”
And just at that moment when Maximiliano was writing on that sheet, the screams of a woman were heard.
"My face, what happened to my face?! Help!”
Maximilian's expression changed instantly. Paula had surely made the mistake of her life.
Running up the stairs, flinging open the room of the woman he had kept there for more than a month, he realized that what he feared most had just happened. Paula had just seen her face in the mirror.
"Help, my face, my face!” She continued screaming with so much pain.
Maximilian knelt before her, forcing her to look at him.
“Don't see me, don't see me!”
"Hey, Paula, listen, please listen.”
"My face, I want my face back!”
"Hey, listen, Paula, listen, please!”
"What did they do to me? Those bastards did this to me!”
"What are you talking about, Paula?”
"I want them to pay, I want them to pay for their mistake!”
Maximilian couldn't do anything other than pull her to his chest. Paula was uncontrollable and he had finally gotten a clue about what had happened in her life. Someone had hurt her, and it was hate that kept her heart alive.
"They have to pay, they have to pay!” She continued saying while hitting Maximilian's chest.
He better than anyone knew what she meant with those words because they had also taken something very important away from him. He could understand Paula, he really did.
Maximilian closed his eyes as he caressed Paula's hair. He didn't know why but at that moment he felt that it must be him and no one else who stayed near her. They had met for a reason and that reason was what would give their stories being one.
"Well, I think the progress we have made is excellent, thank you all very much for this," Alexander said, closing the computer that had allowed him to make the presentation. All the men who had been gathered that morning could not have been more satisfied with all the progress the company had made. The fashion magazine, the new designs couldn't be better, he himself felt ashamed just thinking that he could have needed Paula to carry out those businesses. Then the men began to leave the meeting room. They couldn't believe that a man who loved his wife so much was recovered in such a short time. And among all the people celebrating there, among them you could find the cold gaze of Romina, the same woman of no more than forty-five years who had seen how Paula's husband, her stepsister and of course, the stepmother had treated her in all that time. There was nothing she could do, except regret that Paula, being so young, had ended her life for the sole reason of having married a man as hy
Steps that became slower as that man in a gray suit with a briefcase in his hand, not even he knew how it was going to be possible for him to continue that way until he could reach the usual room.He had answers, after so much time he could now present himself to that man who, although he did not listen to him as such, knew that his heart still had a notion of what was happening around him. Finally, he opened the door to the room, it was at that moment that he was able to sigh tiredly. He had already gotten there, all that was left was to tell the truth that he had been hiding for that entire month."Mr. Sorní," the young, well-dressed man began speaking with a strange accent, "here you have me as I previously promised. I'm so sorry for not having come sooner but the truth is, I wasn't even prepared to tell you this news.” The man lowered his head.Even if the man on the hospital bed didn't open his eyes, didn't listen, didn't seem to do anything except sleep, he felt very sorry. He h
And suddenly all that could be heard in that place was the breaking of Maximilian's heart. Surprise ran through his veins, his pulse had increased, the air was not enough, at any moment he was the one who felt like he was going to fall to the ground. It's just that no matter how well he had heard those words, that couldn't be true. She couldn't be the wife of that damned man who never made it to his mother's bed.Images of Alexander's wedding came to mind the day he went to spy on him in that room."Don't do it, Maximilian, it's not worth doing it. Your mother needs you. Your mother... soon will no longer be there for you.”Maximilian let a couple of tears fall. If her mother died, if her mother couldn't bring Maximilian together with Alexander, surely he would never be able to forgive him.Of course he remembered everything now. That woman he had in front of him was the same one who had been with his brother toasting a life that he had stolen from Maximilian.Without a doubt, life wa
Once again Paula's words were repeated in his mind. Paula as well as that woman in front of him had put in his hands the opportunity to live a second time, what prevented him from not doing so when he also had a lot to gain if he confessed who he was?"And you think I can do that for you? Give you a new life?”"I'm sure of it. If the hand of destiny has brought me here it is for a reason, that reason is you to carry out my revenge. We humans like to take revenge on those who wronged us, we like to plan, we are like vampires who enjoy the blood of the traitor all over our body. It tastes sweeter. Will you operate on me?”Maximilian thought for a few seconds and not because he was thinking about his patient's wishes but because he seemed to have found an answer to the request that had not let him sleep all night."Yes, I will operate on you," he answered. And more than having answered her, he felt that he had answered Paula's question. And as soon as his patient left, Maximilian left hi
In the Garzas' luxurious blue house, the same one in which Gertrudis was the total queen of each and every one of the people who entered her house, that place being the only one that really knew her, Gertrudis, behind that desk, watching and reviewing each of the documents she had, the door to her office was knocked. For her age, it was fair to say that she was a very beautiful woman, a woman who the older she was, the more seductive she became, making it seem that everything that her daughter did not enjoy, despite being a model and one of the best girls, was enjoyed by her mother."Go ahead," Gertrudis said immediately."Madam, you have a visitor.”"Oh, take him away, I don't feel like serving anyone.”"Are you sure about that, my lady?” A male voice spoke.Gertrudis looked up at once. A smile instantly appeared on her face as she saw her dearest visitor."My dear Mr. Laguna, Humberto Laguna," said Gertrudis, standing up from her place. "But please, take a seat.” "And what is it th
It wasn't even two in the morning and all Alexander wanted at that moment was for the woman who was by his side and who had given him a little of her time without even asking him if he was okay with her, out. People were going to start arriving, waking up, arriving and many of those always turned out to be the same investors that Alexander turned out to see the next day. What would they say if they knew he was with a model? His role as a powerful man was simply going to be completely lost.Lying on Alexander's chest, Emma watched and played with his hands, but more than playing with his hands, she looked at that unique piece that was on one of his fingers. That ruby ring, a unique ruby, a beautiful ruby but how it caught the attention of everyone who even saw the ring.“What is this? Who gave it to you?" Emma asked."Don't you think it's time for you to leave?” Alexander asked, getting up from his place, making Emma's head fall squarely on the bed."Alexander, it's not too late ye
"I already told you that there is nothing here!" Paula said, kicking the dry leaves that were in the place where her accident had occurred.Maximilian continued searching, moving the leaves, moving the fallen branches, there was still glass there but the truth was that he didn't care. He just wanted to find that ring."I already told you that if you fell far from the car the ring could be anywhere!”Paula continued looking at the desperation with which he searched for the ring. The truth was that she couldn't understand it. That ring seemed to mean everything to the doctor she had been living with."Come on, help me look, it has to be around here.”"I'm coming, I'm coming.”And in the same way as Maximilian, she began to remove the dirt with the difference that the more she did it, the more glass and part of the car she found, the more memories came to her. She had had an accident there, now that she saw it closer, from there the police had declared Paula dead, but how? Without a body
In the darkness of the night, just where no one but evil and all the curious could attack without anything getting in the way of his plans, Manuel entered the office of the man with whom he lived and who felt that he was his son because he was his mother's best friend, the only one who supported her in everything when Maximilian was a child. He loved that woman as his sister, he loved that boy as his nephew and now as his son, all he could ask for was for something good to happen in his life. But in the same way, there was something he didn't like when it came to thinking about him and the woman they had living with. Suddenly Manuel felt that there was something more, some kind of connection that made it impossible for them to separate. Then Manuel turned on the light while looking for something that could tell him the reason why Maximilian was acting that way with the woman with the cut face.Opening several drawers, seeing only medications, other people's studies, prescriptions for
Only one person in the world had such strange tastes, a person who, of course, was dead. Even if the woman in front of her was not the same Paula, Salomé had come to that place for a reason and that reason Gertrudis was going to end up discovering. "Tell me, why are you interested in a place like this? As far as I know, you have been a very important woman, why do business with the Vitals?""Well, the truth is that it's not exactly them," said Salomé, drinking her tea, having brought it."So what are new businesses about?""Mmm, what I'm looking for right now is to have a very productive source in which I can invest, they told me that the Vitals are one of the most stable people in a business like the one I want to do."Salomé knew perfectly well that the way to grab Gertrudis was through money, it was what she loved the most and it was precisely at that moment that she was going to take the first step against her."Can I know what type of business we are talking about?" "Of course
Legs crossed, one hand holding the glass of wine she had been drinking for the last fifteen minutes, she didn't care how much time passed, she was going to wait for her until she deigned to enter through that door while in the armchair in front of her. There was the baby's crib that she had brought from the hospital no more than six hours ago.“Please come in, miss,” said one of the servers.Being the woman that only she could be, she stood up from her spot the moment she heard her daughter."Mother, mother? Mother, I have news for you!"With one hand on her waist, Emma found Gertrudis looking at her as she rarely did, she motioned for her to come closer."Mother, what is happening?""You're an idiot!" And taking out her anger, Gertrudis slapped her daughter. "I can't believe how far you've come to be such an idiot.""What are you talking about, mother?" "Go away, go away with that child because I don't want him anymore!""Mother, what is happening?""Don't call me mother, I don't w
Signing the last document that Humberto had given her in that yellow envelope, Gertrudis smiled as she handed him the documents. Only that signature was going to validate the decision she had made.Gertrudis was tired of being just the widow of a man who had left her with a fortune, but a fortune that she had not wanted to use until that moment."Are you sure what you are going to do, my lady?" Humberto asked."Of course I'm sure. My daughter is still inept and content with just being a model when she knows perfectly well that she could be the competition of her own husband." "That is why you should be the patron saint of this entire country.""Shall I tell you something?""Whatever you want, my lady. You already know that my duty is to listen to you.""There is something about that woman, the wife of this Montenegro, that I don't like. If only you had been there the night of the celebration, you would have realized many things. That's why I see the need to do this. It is said that t
Emma was not the only one who had seen that young couple who hugged each other as if they were meant for each other, and supported each other in good and bad times, Gertrudis had also seen them from the second floor, which was where she talked to Humberto about some issue that had arisen, nothing important."Is she the woman who was at the celebration yesterday?" She asked.Of course Humberto couldn't understand because he hadn't been there the night before."What are you talking about, my lady?""That woman, who does she think she is hugging my son-in-law like that?"Humberto smiled. "No, I don't understand.""Yesterday, that woman you see there was at the celebration, she is a very powerful woman, she is married to an important man too, what is she up to, huh?""I don't know, my lady, but ask me anything and I'll take care of the rest."Gertrudis shook her head. "No, of course I don't want you to do anything now. I just want to know why she is here, she seems very interested in ever
The world around her could disappear at that very moment because it was not against it that she had that feeling of revenge, it was against just that person who was not there to receive her."Good morning, lady Montenegro.""Salomé Sorín," she corrected.Everyone around her didn't know how to do anything but look at each other."I can assert my name on my own, I don't need my husband's last name. And where is Mr. Vital? Did I get the date wrong and wasn't today the most important meeting we would have?" "Ms. Sorín, it happens that Mr. Vital has not even called to say that he is going to cancel the meeting, we have tried to call him a thousand times.""Cancel the meeting? I don't like being snubbed.""No, of course not. I will continue trying to contact him."Salome sighed. Only that was missing. She saw the world running around her because everyone there knew what the power of the Sorín could mean in a country that until now had the pleasure of living with them, the men knew that
"Who do you think you are? What's wrong with you, Maximilian?! Don't even think about doing what you did outside the house again because I won't answer the other time!" Salomé shouted again and again as they entered the large house they had bought. And Manuel walked behind them, unable to stop smiling discreetly."I already told you, Salomé! I had to kiss you because Alexander was watching us from behind!""What a nice excuse you had to do it!""Think whatever you want, I'm not interested in you in that way!""I already told you not to do something again that I haven't given you permission to do!" With that, Salomé went up the stairs going straight to her room. She was furious, she was tired of men wanting to do anything with her. Salomé was no longer the same. Paula had died, Salomé was not going to allow any man to lay a hand on her. When she got to her room, Salomé closed the doors while her chest rose and fell with total difficulty. She couldn't get what had happened out of her mi
At Salomé's side, Maximilian knew what that moment was all about. Salomé didn't play when she said she was going to take her revenge the short way around. She wanted to get revenge on everyone once and for all."I am pleased to be me, Maximiliano Montenegro, the one who presents Salomé as my wife," he said, noticing Alexander's gaze on his wife. It was as if his jealousy had suddenly awakened, jealousy that he couldn't feel for her."Emma Vital, nice to meet you," she introduced herself."The pleasure is mine, madam.""Gertrudis Garza, nice to meet you."And while everyone was presenting themselves before Maximilian, Alexander had not missed the opportunity to observe Salomé as only a shameless person would do. If only he knew that she was the woman he forgot about so soon.Salomé was no longer the same Paula, this time she knew how to act under the gaze of a man like him. Without being shameless, she smiled elegantly at him. In less than two minutes she had already look into his eyes
With a cup of coffee on the table in the middle of the garden and where Maximilian, Manuel and Salomé were having breakfast. The smile on Salomé's face had changed a little and Maximilian could see that since he had been the one who had seen her smile when she was Paula and not Salomé. The smile had changed, now it was a smile full of seduction.Maximilian knew that this woman could make his brother fall for her once again. Finally Salomé lowered the cutlery in her hands and took her cell phone next to her. Maximilian was afraid that she had changed."Did you enjoy breakfast?" Maximilian asked when he saw that she didn't say anything else, she was changing very quickly and he only seemed to fall more in love every second while he missed the Paula that he could never see as such."Yes, I'll fix a couple of things."Manuel and Maximilian looked at each other. The atmosphere had completely changed."Manuel, can you accompany me to receive the dresses that will arrive in an hour? I have t
ONE WEEK LATERThree black cars that stopped behind the white car. And if those people thought that she was never going to return, they were completely wrong, now it was Salomé who was not going to rest until she saw them on their knees.Wearing a long blue dress that looked more like it was evening than the one she was supposed to wear to that meeting, Salomé got out of the car, being helped by her husband. A man who couldn't believe they were already there, in the same place they had taken from his hands. With a dignified look, Salomé went down leaning on her husband's arm. The great Maximilian Montenegro."Go ahead, Mrs. Montenegro," said one of the men who were already waiting for her.And without even knowing how to make a gesture of gratitude, Salomé continued on her way. The haughty look, the heavy aura and the words that did not come out but as soon as they did they were only going to finish declaring the war that they themselves had been through. While in the boardroom, thirt
