LYRA'S POV
I scrambled to my feet, my heart was beating so fast that I was gasping and exhaling long breaths almost simultaneously. Leaned against the wall waiting for the unsettling murmurs in the kitchen to slowly die down. Moments later, it was replaced by clattering of utensils and footsteps shortly before the switch was turned off. This was a cue I had to leave immediately before anyone saw me. I quickly made my way back to my room with my thoughts racing with what I just heard. He murdered his mate? That couldn't be possible or could it? . I badged into my room, quickly shutting the door behind me. My palms were sweating and my hands trembling. Could it be true? I wondered. But then, what do I truly know about him? He was an alpha, a leader forged in ruthlessness. Secrets were bound to exist. The meeting with the council members had already left me shaken, and now this? It was a lot to process. I laid on the bed, sleep refusing to come until darkness overwhelmed me. ***** I woke up to birds chirping outside my window. Dressing up quickly, I moved out determined to find answers to the ocean of thoughts brewing inside of me. I tried to act normal as I went about my duties. “Good morning, Miss Lyra,” greetings echoed through my ears as I stepped into the laundry yard. The scent of lavender soap and steam filled the air as I pushed through white linens hanging on the lines. “Good morning,” I responded, forcing a smile on my face but my eyes scanned for Abigail. I was hoping I could find out something, maybe anything at all from her. “There she is,” I let out a sigh of relief as I approached her. Her back turned against me as she carefully clipped the linens on the lines. “Abigail,” I called out. Her eyes immediately darted towards my direction. “Good morning, Miss Lyra,” She dropped the sheet in her hands, slowly dipping into a hasty bow. “Would you like me to do anything for you ?” “Oh..no, not at all,” I said, forcing a chuckle. “Ahh..I was wondering if I could assist you or something. It's quite boring around here, you know..” I said, biting hard on my lip and squinting my eyes with a mild smile, making funny gestures with my hands. “Oh..uhh.. I appreciate your offer Miss Lyra, but it's really nothing special doing the laundry,” She said with a soft smile. “Plus, I wouldn't want my head hanging on a spike when Alpha Jake learns that I allowed his mate to do the laundry”. I waved my hand dismissively. “ Oh, come off it, I can decide to do whatever I want around here, at least to some extent” “Yes, I Know but not this.” She nodded, her stance remained unyielding. For a few seconds, there was an odd silence between us. Then, I took my chance. “Abigail?” I started softly keeping my tone low. “ I heard something…and.. I was wondering if you could give me some answers.” I said nervously. She hesitated a bit, looking around as to be sure no one was staring. “And.. what could that be?” I stepped closer, lowering my voice. “Who is Alisha?” Abigail's eyes widened and her face paled as if she had been stung by a bee. The clips in a bowl she held immediately fell off. She quickly bent down, scrambling to pick them up and I joined her. “I don’t know anything about that,” she said quickly, avoiding my gaze. I placed my hand over hers, stopping her movements. “Abigail, please. I’m not asking to cause trouble. I just… I need to know.” She swallowed hard, her eyes darting toward the other workers in the laundry yard. “Miss Lyra, I can’t,” she whispered urgently. “If anyone hears…” “I won’t tell anyone,” I promised, leaning in. “You have my word. I just want the truth.” Before I could get her to say anything, Lisa's voice interrupted the moment. “Lyra” I quickly straightened up, turning to see her walking towards me with a baby boy balancing on her hip. “Hey, Lisa,” I said, forcing a smile. She glanced at Abigail and back at me, her brows slightly furrowing. “Everything okay?” “Yeah.. It's Nothing. Everything is fine,” I said almost too quickly with an awkward smile. Abigail took the chance to grab her basket and hurried off. “I have to finish these,” she mumbled before disappearing into the house. Lisa watched her leave before turning her gaze back to me. “ I came to drop off some outfits I designed for Tessa,” She said. “Wow, I'm jealous right now. I wish I could do that too,” I said with a smile. My foster mum had taught me how to knit, but I never learnt. I always loved art. I had lots of paintings of my favorite places. I once made a painting of me, my mum, my dad and my brother, but they all went up in flames 12 years ago. “And who is this sweet little angel over here,” I gestured towards the baby she held. His chubby fingers clutching her dress tightly. “Sweet light trouble you mean?” We laughed out loud. “He's my son, Jason”. “I thought as much, he's a spitting image of your husband”. I reached out to carry him. “Hello, Jason”. He giggled slightly revealing his razor sharp incisors. We all took a stroll over to a tree shade where we sat. Jason kept wriggling in my arms until I dropped him and he toddled his way around. “He's so cute” I said, shifting my gaze to Lisa who was all smiles as she watched him take his baby steps. “How are you coping..I mean generally since after the meeting with the council members?” I swallowed hard. “It’s been… a lot. I feel like I’m constantly being watched. Waiting for when I take a wrong step” I sighed. “It's overwhelming you know”. Lisa let out a mild chuckle. “I know exactly how you feel. It isn't easy to be in your position right now, but you have to be strong” I nodded, a bitter laugh escaping me. “ I'd sure do my best”. “How are you both getting along?” She said, nodded towards the black GLE driving out through the gate. “Ohh.. Jake, he's quite a handful sometimes. He's everything a woman would want yet, distant”. I paused, staring at the car like the words I seek to express how I feel were written all over it. “I was meaning to ask a question,” I turned back to Lisa who was cleaning Jaden’s hands- he had picked up mud. “Who is Alisha?” Lisa’s hands stilled as she wiped Jason’s tiny fingers, her expression shifting in a way that made my stomach tighten. Her lips parted, but no words came out at first. “How did you hear that name?” she finally asked, her voice quieter than before. I hesitated, debating how much to say. “I overheard some of the maids talking… after the council meeting.” I forced myself to keep my voice steady. “They mentioned her name. And Jake.” Lisa exhaled slowly, her eyes flickering toward the packhouse, as if debating whether to tell me the truth. “Alisha was Jake’s mate,” she said at last. “She died during childbirth.” A sharp pang cut through me. His mate. A woman he had once loved. My throat felt tight, but I pushed through it. “And the baby?” Lisa’s jaw tensed slightly. “It didn’t make it.” Something about how she said it felt like it was a pre-rehearsed story, something she had told before, maybe even to herself. If Alisha had simply died giving birth, why was Abigail jittery when I asked her? Why did she refuse to speak about it at all? Lisa reached over, giving my hand a gentle squeeze. “Jake was never the same after she passed. He shut everyone out, focused only on the pack. He was broken, Lyra.” She offered me a small, reassuring smile. “But then he met you.” I nodded, trying to swallow down the uneasy feeling creeping up my spine. Lisa meant well, I could tell. But something wasn’t right. There were missing pieces and gaps in the story no one wanted to fill.JAKE’S POVThe incident at last full Blood Moon haunted me everyday. The memory persisted in my mind like a festering wound that would not go away, regardless of how much time had passed.I remembered the heat of it, the way my blood boiled as my wolf, Lucio, struggled for control. The Blood Moon's tug was more powerful than anything I had ever experienced. My entire body shook, my muscles tensing up and my claws sticking out against my will. I had tried to resist it. But it was more powerful. And Alisha paid the price. She had looked at me with such love, even in her final moments. Her dark eyes, wide with fear but unwavering in trust."Jake, it’s me," she had whispered, hands cradling her stomach, protecting our unborn child. But I hadn’t heard her. Not truly. The beast inside me had drowned out everything—her voice, her scent, her pain. Her body laid lifeless beneath me. My claws buried in her chest. The howl of agony that ripped from my throat when reality snapped back.I had kill
LYRA’S POVI stood there in the arena, battered and breathless. Blood dripped from the deep cut on my side and arm. I could barely move. My opponent towered towards me. Her eyes, red, burning with cruel satisfaction.“You failed yet again!” She sneered. Before I could react, it's body contorted into sickening cracks, muscles ripping apart, bones stretching, saliva dripping, bloodshot eyes, slowly transitioning into a ferocious monster.I tried to escape but my body felt frozen. The ground beneath me split open, black twigs sprawled upwards, twisting around my legs, dragging me down into darkness. “No, let me go!” I struggled, trying to break free, but it wouldn't let go. I clawed dirt, trying to get a grip on something but its pull was stronger.“You are mine.” It growled. Its claws sliced through my face with a swipe as it dragged me into the underworld.“NO!!!!”I jolted from my bed, my eyes fluttering as I tried to adjust to the dark surroundings. My breathing was ragged, confusio
LYRA’S POVThe quietness in the room was broken by my alarm buzzing sound. I let out a moan and slammed it shut. For a few seconds, I considered sliding back under the duvet but the constant movement and footsteps around the house succeeded in pulling my mind awake.“Jeezzz…don't y'all sleep?”. I rolled over my pillow, muffling my mouth with it before letting out my frustration in a muffled scream.Today is my first day of training. For a moment, I stared into the ceiling thinking of how best to make this work. I let out a deep sigh before rolling over the bed, forcing myself up, and making my way to the bathroom.I gripped the sink, staring at myself in the mirror. With pale skin and eye bags, I didn't look like someone cut out for a fight. Come to think of it, I had always imagined mate Bond being all rosy and a happily-ever-after union. Not some Vikings show-off. Pushing the thought aside, I grabbed my towel and entered the shower.I quickly dressed up and made my way to the kitche
JAKE'S POVI hurried off with what seemed like the speed of light. I didn’t know where I was going at first but I kept running. Away from Lyra, away from the pack, away from myself!..I burst out to the lakeside. There was something about the scenery that gave me a rather calming effect, so it became my spot when I was troubled.I dropped to my knees by the water bank, digging my claws into the sand before letting out a loud growl. “Ahhhhh… why me? Why always me?” I screamed my lungs out. “ Why have you forsaken me, moon goddess? I never brought this upon myself. Haven't you punished me enough?”. “You took my wife! My son! And when I was beginning to build another life, you were back to steal it too.” I punched hard on the ground, tears streaming down my cheeks.I could still remember the smile on Alisha’s face that night. It was a day to our anniversary and we had organized a pre-anniversary dinner- just the two of us. I knelt in front of her, my ears slightly resting on her baby
LYRA'S POVWhat in the good heavens just happened? I hadn’t expected him to lash out like that or did I do anything to trigger his temper? I kept pondering on what just happened as I walked back to the packhouse clenching my wrist lightly, trying to ease the throbbing pain that stung me as a result of Jake's tight grip. The sight of blood smears on my skin made my stomach twist.“He could’ve killed you,” Tara whispered, her voice finally breaking through the racing thoughts in my mind. “That wasn’t just a slip. Something’s wrong with him.” She kept bellowing loudly but I altered no word.I pushed through the side entrance, avoiding the main hall, but the moment I stepped inside, Abigail’s sharp eyes landed on me.“My goodness! Miss Lyra, what happened?” She exclaimed. Her eyes widened as she rushed forward, her hands already reaching for mine.“I’m fine.” My response was sharp and my body tensed as she tried to inspect the wound. Her flinch made me regret my tone, but I couldn’t brin
LYRA'S POVI held my breath, wincing as one of my maids stumbled, nearly sending my box crashing to the ground. “Please be careful with that,” I called out. I knew what it felt like being an Omega in a pack as big as this- fragile and vulnerable. Just that the moon goddess decided to shine her light in my path by mating me with an Alpha causing me to escape that fate.“I'm sorry Ma'am,” she said, adjusting how she held it.I practically was in dire need of an opportunity to get away from the frenzy of the past few weeks. A day or two of fresh air and freedom sounded like bliss.I had earlier discussed with Lisa who mentioned she had a cousin in Eldrida who could be our perfect tour guide.A vehicle pulled in while I was double-checking my belongings in the trunk. I turned to see Lisa. She stepped out with a wide grin on her face. She wore a glittering black sequin dress with slim, single straps. Her brown curls cascaded over her shoulder.“ There she is..!“I said, walking towards her
LYRA'S POVTWO NIGHTS LATER The room was buzzing with energy as we prepared for the club. It was out last night in Eldrida and we were ready to maximize every bit of the night. Janet had been an amazing host and I was sure going to miss her. “ I can't believe our holiday is almost over”. Lisa said, gesturing like a crybaby as she walked over to pick up a call on her phone. I chuckled. “At least you get to go back to a lovely family”.Lisa sat on the bed giggling into her phone. She was speaking to Damon. A pang of jealousy pricked my chest but I pushed it aside. The truth remains that Jake hadn't reached out to me since I left and I couldn't help but wonder if he still cared about me.I was fastening my shirt in front of the mirror when Janet walked in and suddenly burst into laughter.“What in heaven's sake are you wearing? Janet said, staring at me from head to toe. "Don't tell me this is what you plan to wear for the night”I frowned, looking down at my outfit. It was a long den
LYRA’S POVThe rays of the morning sun peered through the window as Janet drove us to the bus station. The weekend had been a crazy blend of adventure. From having fun to being trailed by freaks. As much as I'd miss Eldrida, I wanted to get back home.Shadowclaw wasn’t just a place anymore—it was home. Even if Jake had been distant lately, there was still a part of me that hoped he missed me.“I can’t believe the weekend is over already,” Lisa said, breaking the silence. She leaned her head against the window, a small smile playing on her lips. “It feels like we just got here.”“I know,” I replied, glancing at her. “But it’s nice to be going back home. I miss the pack. I miss… well, everything.” We all chuckled as we drove to the bus station. The passenger had just begun boarding when we arrived at the bus station. “This is where we say goodbye," Janet said. "Let's do this again,” Janet said, reaching out for an embrace.“Sure!” I responded with a warm smile on my face before moving
ALPHA JAKE'S POVThe blades of the helicopter swirled rapidly with a deafening roar above us as we stepped down with our heads slightly bowed. The whirlwind created by the blades caused our hair to fly wildly across our faces. Squinting to avoid particles raised by the wind into our eyes, we all hurried towards the escort vehicle waiting at the extraction point. Damon and I trailed behind the extraction team who led the way with Caspian Reed.“Was there any casualty?” I asked, taking off my bulletproof vest. My breath was ragged, the adrenaline rush slowly began to fade off. It was indeed a close call for us.Damon reconnected his comms, fitting the buds back into his ears. “Eagle team can you hear me?” He spoke into the telecom hoping to get a feedback. The feed crackled for a moment until a response came from the other end.“Sergeant Mike here, this is the eagle team! Everything looks good over here. The boys are good, no casualty, just minor grazes, over!” Sergeant Mike informed u
LEO’S POVI followed behind as Zephyr led the way to the temple. Our footsteps echoed softly through the tunnel as we moved with caution, careful not to draw attention.Lyra’s body hung limply over the guard’s shoulder. Her hands swayed from left to right as we walked down. My heart somehow bled at the sight of her in that state but, who cares? The voices in my head screamed for power.I turned my gaze to Aemond, who had been walking beside me in silence, his shoulders were square and unbothered, seemingly enthusiastic about the whole drama. As we drew closer, I felt my stomach twist. I bit hard on my teeth, tightening the muscles around my jaw. My fists remained clenched at my sides, so hard my knuckles turned pale.I had made my decision. Every moment I reminded myself: this was for the pack. For my legacy. I would never give away everything I fought so hard to gain on the altar of family ties. We finally arrived at the temple. The torches ignited along the corridor, trembling lik
JAKE’S POV“How on earth is that possible? Blood Moon Pack?” my stomach churned with anger. “How were they able to sneak in and out of Shadowclaw, kidnap Lyra, and walk away freely and no one noticed?” I thundered, my chest rose and fell as I fumed.“I wish I had an answer to that, Alpha Jake,” Dmon replied evenly. “I was out on a business trip when the incident occurred. There couldn’t have been a way I would have known or suspected any malicious act was brewing under our nose,” Damon explained in a curt tone.I wasn’t ready to listen to what Damon had to say. My senses were clouded, my blood boiling. How could Lyra be scooped up by a neighboring Pack like some trash can? “I want to know the chief guard in charge on that day! This is the height of incompetence and I would not condone such a level of carelessness,” I barked.I turned sharply, my gaze fixed on Damon. “I need a message sent to Alpha Leo, declaring war! If he wants to play the dirty game of politics then I’m all out for
JAKE’S POVThe lightning sent a bolt of charges across the sky followed by the roaring and loud drumming of the thunder as heavy rainfall splattered on the roof down to the floor. The streets were deserted, and only a few could be spotted running back to their homes. I stood on the balcony with a cup of hot coffee and milk covered with thick woolen robes and socks gazing far into the road. It’s been a week since I ordered surveillance to be mounted on Caspian Reed, yet till now, no tangible information has been collected about him- he was indeed a ghost, or possibly a chameleon, perfectly camouflaging and good at covering his tracks. I had hoped he could lead my men to find out who this Lyra was, but so far, it only led to dead ends.“It’s a cold night, Your Grace. Wouldn’t it be rather comfortable and more relaxing being in each other's arms other than standing out here alone, staring into the dead, cold night?” Ella asked, sneaking up on me from behind with a soft seductive tone. S
LYRA'S POV"Get her!!"Leo's loud voice cut through like thunder, sharp and commanding, distorting the peace of the moment. Something about him was entirely different. I didn’t have the time to decipher what was going on as my body reacted before my brain could catch up. My legs immediately wheeled into motion driving me straight into the forest path.I ran so fast like my life depended on it. Dry branches stung my face and arms like a long whip, piercing my skin through my clothes as I raced through the thick forest. My lungs ached as I sprinted, pushing through the obstacles. The pounding of my heart and the quick loud gasps of air deafened my ears. They were louder than the snarls of guards chasing after me from behind. The guards were close. Too close. I looked over my shoulder, observing how close they were when my foot caught on a root. My hands flew up to brace myself, but it was too late. I stumbled, rolling over into a nearby ditch, till I got stopped by a huge root. I gro
LEO’S POVI stood in front of the mirror checking out my abs after an intense two-hour session of cardio and muscle toning exercises. Beads of sweat ran down my temples, dripping from my chin and from my neck lining the contours of my abs and disappearing into the waistline of my thick pants. I wiped at it absently with the back of my hand, only for more ripples to form from my pores. I pulled down my singlet which stuck to my body, soaked with sweat from the intense session I just finished. My muscles ached, throbbing from the weight lifts, yet I embraced the discomfort. The pain and weariness served as reminders I was still in control—of my body and choices.I reached for the towel on the side table and dragged it across my face and neck, then snatched up the bottle of energy drink, gulping it down in three swallows. The citrus sting hit the back of my throat and I exhaled, wiping my mouth with my forearm. That’s when the door creaked open.“Your Grace.” Aemond’s voice sliced thr
JAKE'S POVI was going through the business plans, flipping through pages and marking important notes when Caspian’s phone buzzed in my hand. My gaze instinctively fell on the name displayed above the document I was checking out.“Lyra?”The name on his screen shot through me like a lightning bolt, making my entire body jolt. I held tighter on the phone, my heart pounding in my chest as I stared at the name glowing on the screen like some twisted joke.I batted my eyelid once, twice and the third time hoping my senses were playing tricks on me but It didn’t go away. Every fibre in me pulled hard inside me urging me to minimize and find out who this Lyra is.The name has haunted my every breath, every waking hour since the day she vanished. I had searched every possible realm, spoken to the Moon Seers, even interrogated rogues in the dungeons—and yet nothing. And here it was, her name… lighting up another man’s phone. What are the odds she was who I was looking for? What if it’s a diff
CASPIAN'S POVPeople often assume the worst monsters are beasts with claws and teeth while the sweetest of souls come bearing flowers with wide smiles on their faces. But, they’re wrong.Monsters wear tailored suits. They speak gently. They smile as they chain you, Just like I do.My name is Durello Caspian popularly known as Caspian Reed; a bastard son of Reed Durello, former CEO of Reed mining firm. Former, right? Well, I killed him and his son to assume the position of CEO of Reed’s mining firm.Left to fend for myself at a very young age after the death of my mother, I grew up in the pits of Draymoor, where boys were taught to survive, not dream, till I met my savior, a popular Mafia billionaire Carlito Santo-Maria.Carlito owned the largest human trafficking shipment in Draymoor. At sixteen, I had already trafficked my first girl across the border, smuggled inside a wine barrel. By eighteen, I was managing shipments of humans like livestock. They say time changes everything but
JAKE'S POV The oak desk trembled under the weight of my clenched fists. Papers—maps, reports, meaningless pages of failed updates—scattered onto the floor as I slammed them away. The silence in the room was heavy, but not nearly as heavy as the storm brewing inside me. Damon stood at a distance, tense, his jaw set like stone."How the hell did you lose her? She was right there, all you had to do was, walk in and find her!" I spat, my voice sharp and cracking with frustration.Damon didn’t flinch. He rarely did. But I saw the flicker of regret in his eyes. "Jake," he started, his voice low and calm. “We have combed through the entire city, but we can't seem to find her.”“Do not give me that crap, Damon!” I blurted out in frustration, veins bulging my forehead and neck. "What do you mean you can't find her?” I asked. “Rio is not that much of a big city! Check every damn street, every village, estate, and whatever there is!” my tone laced with frustration as I yelled.“But Alpha, I alr
