Katarina

Cyprian stands there, just a few feet away, staring at us. My heart sinks into my stomach as I see the shock and disappointment on his face. I can’t believe we’ve been caught, and to make it worse, it had to be Cyprian. Well, better him than Zane.

Francis steps back immediately. He looks at me, puzzled, probably wondering who Cyprian is. He quickly pulls out a gun from inside his jacket, about to shoot Cyprian. I gasp in shock. My gaze turns to Cyprian—his eyes gleam yellow, and his fingers turn to claws, his face looking more like a wolf than a human. He growls, his wolf teeth looking like they’re about to tear Francis apart. I turn back to Francis, and he cocks the gun. I can see the fear in his eyes as he stares at Cyprian, who’s wolfing out. Christ! This isn’t supposed to happen. My fiancé and the only male friend I have in Wolf Zone are about to kill each other. I have to stop this.

“No,” I echo, standing between them as Cyprian is about to charge at Francis.

KatarinaZane stands across the room, his piercing eyes fixed on me. I try to act relaxed, but my gaze keeps drifting back to the bag on the bed. I can’t help it—it’s like I’m giving myself away with every glance. If he sees what’s inside, he’d kill me. I swallow hard, trying to calm myself, but my nerves are getting the better of me.He scoffs suspiciously. “Why do you keep looking at that bag?” he asks, his eyes narrowing. “What’s in it?”I freeze for a second, then force a nervous smile. “Nothing… just girl stuff,” I stammer, trying to sound calm. “You really don’t want to touch it. Trust me.”Zane doesn’t look convinced. In fact, he looks more interested now than ever. He starts walking toward the bed, his eyes on the bag, and my heart races faster with each step he takes. He’s almost at the edge of the bed now, just a gesture away from reaching out and grabbing it.Instinctively, I step in front of him, blocking his path. I can feel the tension between us. His hard stare locks on

KatarinaI get back home, feeling frustrated and confused. I walk through the passageway and hear voices coming from the other side of the hallway. They’re muffled, but I can tell it’s a conversation I’m not supposed to hear. My curiosity gets the better of me, so I follow the sound, trying to be careful not to make any noise.I stop at the door. It’s slightly ajar, and I peek in. I’m surprised. Magdalena is here, standing in front of Zane. He’s leaning against the table, arms crossed, his face expressionless. She’s speaking in a hushed but intense voice, like she’s trying to convince him about something—or so I think, from the desperation I see on her face.“You can’t let the mating ceremony happen,” I hear her say as she looks at him.I freeze. So, it’s true. Zane is planning some kind of wedding for us—without even telling me! This is shocking. How could he do this? I can’t marry him, not like this, not when I haven’t even had a say in the matter. He’s not reacting, but Magdalena d

ZaneThe Wolf Council is already seated, waiting for us. Katarina couldn’t have come home at a better time. If I hadn’t seen her, I’d have gone to the academy to get her. I notice Maik sits in the center. He’s the oldest wolf in Wolf Zone, the one everyone turns to for wisdom. He’s a custodian of our wolf traditions. He talks with the moon, or so they say. Some claim the moon goddess kissed him, blessing him with this rare gift. No wolf in the zone questions his prophecies.Katarina stands beside me, shifting uncomfortably. “What are we doing here?” she whispers. She glances at the other Alphas, seated and watching us.I catch Adam’s cold stare at her, his lips drawn into a hard line. Katarina’s eyes dart back to me, uncertain. I can feel her confusion, her hesitation.“I was going to tell you, but then you came to me,” I murmur. “This is Maik. He’s an ancient seer, and he’s going to help us get the fated date for our mating ceremony.”She frowns. “Date?” she mutters, like she can’t b

ZaneAdam puts his arm around me. “I suppose this is the time I say congratulations, Alpha Zane,” he says with a wicked grin. I’m not sure he means it, as we leave the seer’s old building. “Let’s celebrate,” he adds, leading us to a nearby bar. It’s a fancy place, good enough for a werewolf looking for a good drink. A bartender places a bottle of whiskey on the table in front of us and pours it into our glasses. Adam picks up his glass and, in a loud voice, makes a toast.“To my nephew, our Grand Alpha Zane and his human mate!” he declares. The Alphas cheer, making wolf sounds as they clink their glasses together. Everyone drinks, except Katarina. She doesn’t even reach for her glass. Her eyes are fixed on something far away. Her mind is clearly elsewhere.I lean closer to her, whispering into her ear, “Katarina, you could at least pretend to be happy. You’re marrying the Grand Alpha, after all.”Her head tilts toward me, her eyes flashing with anger. “What… marrying a beast is suppos

I’m not going to let her fake cries get to me or make me let her in. Letting her in would only lead to more defiance. She needs to learn her place. I’m her Alpha mate—she has to respect that or learn the hard way. I head upstairs to my room, determined to leave her out there.“Alpha Zane, are you really going to leave her out there?” Roselyn’s voice echoes in the hallway, hesitant. “Please, just let her come inside.”I pause, hearing Katarina’s banging continue behind me.“Please, Zane, let me in.” Her voice is weak, but I keep moving. She needs to be punished for what she’s done. I won’t show her any pity. “She’s lucky this is all I’m doing,” I say to Roselyn, walking past her.Roselyn blocks my path again. “Alpha Zane, she’ll learn. ZaneKatarina woke up. And she just ran away. Ran out of my room, like… She was terrified of me. I don’t blame her. If I were her, I’d be terrified of me too. It must have been hard for her, being outside, in the cold, all night. Now it’s been a few days and… I’m not sure what’s going on in Katarina’s head. She has tried her best for the past few days to avoid me. She no longer comes down for meals. And I don’t force her to either. I get it. Maybe she needs some time. Maybe I scared her a little bit too much. Or, just the right amount. For a mate as strong-willed as Katarina is, she needs a hard hand. Only that a part of me is softening for her, making me question whether I took it too far. She hasn’t been to the academy. She barely comes downstairs. Roselyn comes down with most of the food she takes up to her. I’m worried. I know I shouldn’t be. But I am. I know that I shouldn’t care. But I do. I mean… caring could just be that. She stays under my roof, so I care that she’s well-fed.

KatarinaI wake up feeling my body move slowly. As my eyes open, the first thing I remember is Zane. I look over at him, still lying there. He’s not awake yet. He seems to be in a deep sleep, and I can’t help but stare at him. My eyes trace over his face. How could someone so good-looking be so wicked?I try to resist the temptation to touch him, but not for long. My hand reaches out, almost of its own accord, and I gently caress his cheek, feeling the smoothness of his skin, his chiseled cheekbones, and his straight nose. My fingers outline the shape of his lips, tender yet resilient. Gosh, I want to kiss him.My hand slides down his chest, moving under his shirt to feel the hard muscles of his body. His chest is perfectly sculpted, every inch of him is firm and strong. I can feel the outline of his abs, and my hand keeps trailing lower. My curiosity grows, and my hand moves toward his belt, my fingers brushing against the leather. Then, I stop. My eyes catch on the bulge in his pant

My knees hit the floor hard, but I don’t care. I grab his shoulders, shaking him, praying in my mind that he’ll open his eyes.“Zane!” I whisper this time, my voice breaking as tears roll down my cheeks. I can’t stop them; they fall uncontrollably.“You can’t die. Please don’t die.” My breath hitches, my hands trembling as I hold him tighter. I swipe at the tears, trying to clear my vision, but they just keep coming. The fear grips me so tightly, I feel like I can’t breathe. I don’t want him to die. But why? I should want this. I poisoned him. I should want him dead. But now, staring at him like this, I can’t bear the thought. It feels like a part of me would die too. I don’t know if I’m more afraid of becoming a wolf or losing him. My heart races, and I panic. I have to do something.“Oh God, Zane!” I

To kill me and get a cure to get rid of my blood in you.”She looks away, saying nothing.I let out a cruel laugh. “I had to see how far you’d go,” I say, staring into her eyes darkly. “And you were going to go all the way, weren’t you? You were ready to kill me.” The reality of it all pains me more than it should. I thought I had her, thought she was wrapped around my finger. But tonight, I see the truth. All this time, it has always been about revenge for her.“You’re lucky I didn’t end up killing you,” she mutters under her breath.“No, Katarina,” I say, leaning closer, my lips brushing her ear. “You’ve got it all wrong. ZaneI reach for the water, my gaze locked on Katarina’s. She looks nervous—too nervous. There’s something about the way she’s watching me that seems off. There’s an anticipation in her eyes, I can’t quite place it yet. I twist the cap off the bottle and lift it to my nose. A faint scent hits me immediately. Wolfsbane. My lips curl into a dark smile. Did she really think she could pull this off? The scent is unmissable to someone like me. I’ve lived through battles against wolf hunters. I know their tactics and mode of attack. I know how they think, what they do. I’ve spent most of my life protecting my clan from their countless attacks, and I’ve survived their assassination attempts too. I glance at her again, and I see the panic in her eyes as she wonders whether I’ve figured it out. But I don’t say anything. I won’t confront her yet. Instead, I deliberately take a long drink, downing the entire bottle. Her face is priceless—pure disbelief, maybe even a little fear. She must have be

She got hurt and now she’s resting.” I stop rambling, waiting for him to speak.“I’ll just go,” I say, noticing his eyes on me, mesmerized by me, speechless.“Wait, don’t go,” his eyes beg me to stay.Yes! I knew he wouldn't resist me. I smile to myself and turn back to him. “I’m sure you won’t drink it. You’d think I’m poisoning you again, but I only brought it so you wouldn’t scold Roselyn.”He looks at me, surprised. “Since when did you start helping wolves?”I meet his gaze, wondering if he’s being serious. “It was a joke,” he adds, sensing my hesitation
