Alison stopped in her tracks, looking back at Oscar.
Her gaze on him was as though the answers lay written on his face. "What’s in it for me?" she asked, "how do you plan to help me?" "I can help you get your son back," Oscar had replied, his tone low, and desperate. "You just need to help me win this case. There is a lot more at stake than just the law. You could be the key, Ms. Harper. It's why you are the queen of justice." She had to get him back, no matter the cost. For all she knew, The Franciscos were not ready to hand over custody of her son to her, and now that she was fully established, she would use all means to get her son back. "I understand your conflict. Here is my card, just in case you change your mind," he said, handing her a white card with his phone number and email address written on it. *** After her encounter with Oscar, she had forgotten about his ordeal. Her focus was to get her son back; nothing else mattered. Just as she was thinking, her phone buzzed, and the caller ID showed it was Bruno. She hesitated for only a moment before answering. “Bruno,” she said, her voice sounding cold. “Alison,” he replied, his tone surprisingly calm. “I was just thinking about you.” She scoffed. “Oh, really? How thoughtful of a married man.” “I’m serious,” he continued. “I just came across your profile, and you have improved greatly.” Alison rolled her eyes. “Cut the pleasantries, Bruno. What do you want?” “I want you to know that I’m working on something big. A project that will change everything. I’m taking the company to the next level. There is a lot of money to be made.” He paused, almost too casually. “You wouldn't want to miss the opportunity to work with me, would you? Why don't you come back to the company? I'll give you whatever position you want.” "Bruno, I am not the old Alison you could toy around with. I am not, and will never work for you. To hell with your project and company," she responded. "How would Theo feel about this?" He suddenly said, causing Alison to be silent. Finally, she let out a chuckle, "What kind of a monster are you? Are you trying to blackmail me by using my son? It won't work, try again." "Just you wait and see what the future holds for this project. You will come back crawling to me. Don't miss your chance now." He added with a sneer. She hung up without saying a word. She knew of the project, at least a tip of it, and knowing Bruno, he would do anything to make it a success. She reached for her phone again and dialed Oscar’s number. The phone rang twice before he answered. "Ms. Harper,” he said, his voice calm “I’m glad you called. Have you decided yet?” “I’ll do it,” she said, her voice filled with determination. “I’ll help you win your case. Be sure to keep to your end of the bargain." Oscar let out a relieving sigh, "thank you so much, Ms. Harper." "But first, there is a catch." She added. Oscar paused, "what is it?" “I want to be in your company. I want a real position. I’ll be the head of the law firm. That way, I can work from the inside and find out who your spies are. If I work in your company, I won't be able to work for another, no matter what; until the deal is over.” “I was hoping you would say that,” he replied, a tinge of happiness in his voice. “I will send over the contract. We will get everything in writing and seal it. Once you sign, you can resume duty here.” *** After carefully reviewing the contract, she signed her name below getting ready to start the game of justice. She walked into Rodrigo Internationals, the biggest conglomerate in the US, wearing black pants and a white shirt, coupled with a pair of black stiletto heels. When she stepped into the elevator, she met Oscar, who stood expressionlessly. "Good morning, Ms. Harper," he greeted. She nodded slightly, "good morning." “So, welcome aboard,” he said, his voice calm yet professional. “I trust you are ready to begin.” Alison nodded, wearing a smile. "I’m ready. But I need to know one thing, Oscar." He raised an eyebrow. "Go ahead." She turned to him and asked. "Who exactly am I defending in this case?" "I'm sorry about that, I should have informed you before now," he said, letting out a sigh, "but first, I must thank you for accepting to work with us. Since you have signed the contract, I will let you meet the CEO of the company; the one in whom you are helping with the case." She nodded and remained silent. The elevator doors opened, and they walked into a spacious, glass-walled office. As she walked behind Oscar, observing the large space, they walked into the office of the CEO. "She is here, sir," Oscar said with a bow. The man stood tall with his back to them, gazing at the city from his ceiling-to-floor glass window. "I'll leave you now, Ms. Harper," Oscar said and walked away. There was something familiar about the man, but Alison shook the feeling off. She cleared her throat and introduced herself, her tone sounding professional. "Good day, Mr. CEO. I'm Alison Harper, your new lawyer, and I will be taking on your case from now on." There was no reply from him for some minutes, and before Alison could say another word, the man finally spoke up. "Long time, no see, Ali." That voice... That nickname.. She refused to believe it was who she thought it was until he turned around. The CEO of Rodrigo Internationals...the one she was supposed to defend was none other than Travis. Her first love. The man who had abandoned her at the time she needed him the most. She stared at him, her heart beating faster than usual in her chest. The very man she had sworn to never set her eyes on was now standing across from her, and he was her client. "Travis," she whispered. "Hi, Alison. Thank you for accepting to—" "Never! If I had known it was you, I would never have signed the contract. I'm resigning."The moment she found out that Travis was the main client, she shook her head vigorously, already terminating the contract. She was not sure she could do this; having to see the same man that broke her heart...Out of anger and pain, she turned to leave, her heart thumping faster than usual, as the memories of their past together flowed in like a river.Just as she reached the door, he rushed forward and grabbed her arm, stopping her from leaving.“Alison, please,” he pleaded, his voice filled with desperation and frustration.“You can’t just walk away like this.”Alison pulled her arm away. She felt pain and anger towards him. He was someone she never wished to see, at least, not now. The pain of what he did in the past filled her heart and she felt disgusted by his sight. She just wanted to leave.“And why not? Do you think I’m just going to stay here and pretend like we are cool? You broke my heart, Travis. So, don't expect that I will help you."Travis ran a hand through his hair,
There was silence in the room as Travis furrowed his brows in confusion, wondering just what she was talking about."What letter are you talking about?" He asked, curious to know what she meant. She remained silent, shaking her head. "Of course, you don't know what I am talking about." He knew it was better not to probe further about the past. It would only worsen the situation now.All he needed to do was get her on his side and make her accept his offer. He needed her help so badly that he was ready to do anything to make her accept it.He sighed, "Can we just forget about that, please?" He said, even though he didn't know what 'that' was."Alison," he called out, "I know things have been... complicated between us. But I need your help on this one. You are the most competent lawyer I know."Alison didn't seem to be done with the conversation. Even though she wanted to forget it, somehow, a part of her wanted to have a conversation about it. "Travis, we have been down this road bef
Bruno stormed into the sitting room, throwing his suitcase to the other side. It fell on the tiled floor, causing a sound that shocked both his mother and his wife.He looked angry, as though something had happened. He began to pace the room, taking off his jacket, and loosening his tie.“Bruno! What is wrong? What has gotten into you?” His mother asked, her tone filled with annoyance from the sudden shock.“Alison,” he spat, heaving heavily. “She rejected my offer! She is working for Rodrigo Internationals now. Can you believe that?”“Alison?” Mrs. Francisco scoffed, rolling her eyes. “That girl? I have always said she was not good enough for you. Let her go. Why do you need her?"Bruno turned to his mother, who did not understand what he meant. “This is not about her! This is about the project, Mom. I needed her expertise, and she rejected it blatantly without even thinking about it. She is now working for my competitor; that scumbag!"Rachel cleared her throat, trying to fit into t
It was a beautiful morning. A good one, actually, after putting Bruno in his place last night.Of course, he needed her expertise for his project, but she was long gone, and she would never go back to her vomit. It was time to be the Chief Legal Officer of Rodrigo International.Although it belonged to her Ex-lover, whom she did not want to have anything to do with him, she would rather help him than help the Franciscos. They were not worth her attention at all.It was her first day at work, officially an employee in the company, even though she owned her brand. She wore a pair of black pants, a white long-sleeved shirt, and a black tie, coupled with black stiletto heels and a black handbag. It was giving off the badass lawyer vibe; Queen of Justice! She applied light makeup on her face and packed her up in a ponytail. As she arrived at the company, Oscar was around to welcome her.She could not blame the young man, he was only following orders from his boss."Welcome, Ms. Harper," he
“I am the CEO of this company,” he reminded her. “You are here to help me manage a crisis, not to let personal feelings cloud your judgment.”Alison retorted, refusing to let him win. “I am not letting personal feelings cloud anything. I’m trying to do my job. Stop trying to buy me with your kindness.”"Fine, then. Think whatever you want," he declared. As the words left his mouth, he saw her flinch, as if she was not expecting him to be this harsh. For a brief moment, he felt the urge to apologize for his harsh tone, but he pushed the urge away, reminding himself of the professional boundaries they had set. “Just remember,” he added, “We have a board meeting in an hour, and I expect you to be prepared.”With that, he turned and walked out, leaving Alison standing there, speechless. As he approached his office, Travis wondered what had really happened to her. She had changed so much. This was not the Alison he knew years ago. She was sweet, caring, and loving, full of brightness...
The board meeting was rescheduled, and they were all gathered again for the meeting. The tension in the air was no different from the previous one, except that it was heavier than before.“Mr. Rodrigo, the stock prices are stagnating,” one of the shareholders, Mr. Caldwell, mouthed, adjusting his glasses. “If this continues, we will be looking at a huge collapse. We need answers, and we need them now. What is going on? What are you doing about this?”Alison sat at the far end of the table, taking a glance at Travis. She had only recently become part of this case, but the stakes seemed extremely high. The accusations against him were baseless, and he needed to clear his name in order to regain the company's legacy and keep it going, or else it would affect not only him but the stakeholders who had invested in the company. She knew she needed to get evidence faster and she had just limited time to do so. If she did not act fast, she was certain that the company would be in total shamb
The boardroom was filled with murmurs from the board members, wondering what story she was making up.Alison knew it was a hard thing to believe, seeing that all the bottles were sealed, and so, how was it that it was poisoned?“Everyone, please,” she called out, trying to calm the atmosphere. “We need to focus. Some are safe, and some are not. This is not a mistake or a random incident, someone is trying to create an internal conflict."“Are you saying we are in danger, as well?” Mr. Caldwell asked in annoyance. “This is madness!”“Who would do such a thing?” Ms. Linda spat. “And why would they target us? This is about Mr. Rodrigo!”"Ms. Linda, you have been targeting the CEO for a while now. Do you know anything about this?" "What? How dare you accuse me?" "Pointing fingers will only make matters worse. We need to figure out who is behind this before we start turning on one another. This is exactly what they are aiming for.”Enough!” Travis’s voice came through, silencing the roo
As Alison stepped out of the boardroom, her mind was filled with thoughts of what had just happened in the boardroom.Poisoned waters?Who would have had the mind to do something as outrageous as that?As she thought hard about it, she walked past the cleaning area. Something in her told her to just check the environment, and as she did, she noticed something different. She walked past a few cleaners, who greeted her, but there was something off about some of them.Particularly, one of them, who had put on a nose mask. She bowed, averting her eyes away from Alison's gaze. She bent her head low and walked away. Alison turned her head to the back, observing her footsteps, and how she acted.Could the suspect be one of the cleaners? If so, then, who sent them? With a sudden urge to find the suspect, she took a left turn and entered the elevator, heading to the control room.As she got there, she met with the head of the department, who stopped her.She took out her ID card and waved it a
Alison woke up to an empty bedroom, the television still on, and Travis's stuff scattered around the room. “Travis,” she called and sat up in the bed. “Where did he go to this early?” She yawned and got out of bed, wondering why Travis had left for work without her. Her eyes darted to the clock and she was shocked at what time was. “It's 9 am already?” She gasped and rushed to the bathroom to freshen up.She got back to the room and there was still no sign of Travis, it seemed as though he had not even bee around. She finally decided to reached for her phone to call him. Since they began living together weeks ago, he has never gone to work without her, so why all of a sudden?“Is it probably because of what transpired last night?” She asked herself ad the moment she turned her screen on, but it was flooded with a lot of notifications.70 missed calls from Megan, Carlos, Karen, Drake, and other numbers. Alison's heart skipped a beat as she scrolled through the calls, but Travis's n
The night had descended, casting a dark and foreboding shadow over Alison's apartment. She lay in bed, her body shivering under the duvet, despite the warmth of the room. Travis, sensing her distress, reached out and gently petted her hair, trying to calm her down."Hey, it's okay, Alison. Try to relax. You need to get some rest," Travis whispered softly. “And get a grip of yourself.”“Travis, I can't,” She whispered. “It's just that everything is happening so fast? Like it has already been planned from the onset and is simply playing out.”“How do you mean?” Travis asked, adjusting beside her. “Is there something else you know, that I am not aware of?”“Not exactly. But can't you read between the lines and see what I'm trying to say?” She asked, getting slightly frustrated as her gaze grew distant. “Travis, those men that have been trailing me definitely want something and it is obvious they'd stop at nothing to get it.”“Okay?” Travis raised an eyebrow getting even more confused. “B
“Bruno darling, have you finally decided what you intend to do about Alison?” Mrs. Francisco asked, as she watched a television show with him. “I mean, if you wanted to do anything, then you should start doing it already.”“Mum, I'm planning something already,” he muttered, although he had his gaze fixed on the television, his mind was far away. “Just try as much as you can to stay away from it.”“Bruno, what about Theo? Are you still not going to let him feel your affection? The kid needs you.” She said, her eyes holding a glint of guilt.“Mum…” Bruno groaned. “Please allow me time to think, I already told you that I am not ready to unleash the version of me that the kid brings out.”“Clearly Bruno, you are neglecting the kid. Does that not bother you?” She asked again. “Look Bruno, I'm still a mother and I have the motherly affection in me. Letting Theo stay without your affection will definitely give Alison more grounds.”“Mum, I'm not in the right frame of mind for this conversati
“Calm down, Ally Wally, get a grip of yourself” Karen whispered, her gaze drifting to the road and back to Alison whose hands were trembling against her thighs where they rested. “I know that was quite traumatizing, but come on.” “Karen, I swear you can't understand,” Alison managed to utter. “To me, this goes way beyond being trailed, Karen, the last time I got trailed I was attacked! I was trailed down to my apartment and attacked without remorse.”With her gaze fixated out through the window, Alison's mind wandered back to the attack. “You know… I could have been killed if I hadn't learned Taekwondo back then,” she whispered, pressing her face against the tinted car glass. “Clearly, the men were caught off guard, I could see it written in their faces, Karen, it was all clear! What if I was not strong enough and I got raped? Or killed?”“Alison, calm down, stop overthinking this… yes, we got trailed and almost attacked, but we escaped, right? Is that not all that should matter?” K
Layla kept pacing around her room anxiously, her gaze darting between her wall clock and outside the window.“Where the hell is Spider?” She spat and pushed everything off her vanity table. “Show up!!”After waiting for hours with no sign of Spider, she opened her bedside drawer and took out a pack of Cigarette and a lighter. Then a sharp knock sounded on the door. “I don't want to see anyone, just get out!” She snapped and lit the cigarette, staring out through the window. “Get out!”“You wouldn't even ask who it is,” she heard a familiar voice from outside. “Anyway, it is Spider.”“Damn!! Come on in. Why did you not speak earlier.” She snapped. “So any progress?” She asked, her gaze still fixed out the window.“If I had spoken earlier, it would have been for you to be a bit nice knowing it was me.” Spider replied, walking fully into the room. “Why does everywhere look so messy and scattered, I don't want to believe you lost your mind again.”“Of course, you were not showing up, and
“So, what now?” Travis asked staring at Oscar as they walked towards the elevator which read, ‘out of bound’Only the managing board members were permitted to use it.“Boss, it was in the news last night.” Oscar replied, his voice measured. “I thought we'd talk about it first before I think about how to handle it.”“Of course, it was, and that's why I'm bothered. I hope you didn't make the payments? I mean I hope you did not buy any shares,” Travis asked.“Not yet sir, look the files are here already. I just needed you to append your signatures on them before going to pay for the shares.” He replied, pointing towards one of the files in his hand.“Why do I feel like this was all a plan, supposed to be a set up or something?” Travis asked, his gaze growing distant. “Just a few days ago, Gold&Sparkle Group was doing just fine, and today they've gone bankrupt and are about to shut down.”“In my opinion sir, I think this is exactly why they began selling out shares. Think about it… when l
“Hey babe,” Travis said, walking slowly down the stairs, with his phone against his left ear. “You're there already?”“Yes, and I recall you made mention of me letting you know when I arrive.” Alison said and he smiled.“Trying to be a good girl, huh? I like that,” he winked as if she could see him. “Anyway, say me well to Megan, and have fun.”“I will, don't miss me too much though,” Alison whispered and Travis could already imagine her expression.“I won't miss you, trust me, I'll just be here having fun all by myself.” He replied, his lips curling up into a pout. “Take care,” Alison mumbled and he ended the call.“She is definitely going to be the end of me,” Travis grinned and settled into his favorite armchair, phone in hand.“So.. what is today going to be about?” He asked himself. “Oh my goodness, Tristan!!” He exclaimed recalling that he bumped into Tristan at the fundraiser and promised to call him.He immediately dialed Tristan's number and as he awaited a response, his min
Sunday morning dawned bright and beautiful, and Alison woke up feeling like the luckiest woman alive. She was snuggled up in Travis's arms, his warm breath tickling her ear."Good morning, beautiful," Travis whispered, his voice husky with sleep.Alison smiled, feeling her heart flutter. "Good morning, handsome." She whispered back, her eyes sliding open slowly. She shut them back again, before opening it slowly again, and allowing herself get used to the brightness of the room. They lay there for a moment, enjoying the warmth of each other's bodies. Then Travis leaned in, his lips brushing against Alison's in a gentle kiss."I love you," he whispered, his eyes locked on hers. “I have always loved you, my princess, and I will always love you.”"I love you too," She replied, her voice barely above a whisper. Staring in his eyes, Alison asked. “Why are you suddenly sounding like this?”“Nothing much…” Travis trailed off, but deep down, Alison knew it was something else.“My love…talk to
Bruno felt his world stop the moment Travis Rodrigo was announced as the most eligible bachelor and the richest young man in the whole of Chicago.“This is not possible! Something has to be done to put an end to this charade,” Enzo spat and turned to Bruno. “This title belongs to you Bruno… you've always earned it. So, will you just sit back and watch some dude come snatch it from you? And of every dude, Travis?”Bruno shook his head. “I can't stay here anymore,” he muttered. “Whatever the organizers had in mind before presenting him with this title… I'm leaving.”Marco sighed and patted Bruno's back softly. “Just take it easy, once you've settled in we can talk over a conference call.”“Thanks a lot,” Bruno smiled shortly. He was just about to leave when a thought crossed his mind. “Have anyone of you seen or heard from Layla? She's supposed to be here too, right?”Enzo shook his head. “I haven't gotten any glimpse of her.“Marco sighed. “Me neither, but I'm sure she should be around
