Isabel POV

The room crackled with tension, every second stretching into an eternity as Diego stood in the doorway, his rifle raised. His eyes, cold and calculating, locked onto Miguel.

“You don’t have to do this,” Miguel said, his voice steady despite the turmoil in his eyes.

Diego’s expression didn’t falter. “Yes, I do. You’re on the wrong side of this, Miguel.”

“The wrong side?” Miguel stepped forward, his rifle lowered slightly, but his movements deliberate. “You’re working for a man who’s willing to destroy everything just to control it.”

Diego’s jaw tightened. “You think I don’t know what’s at stake? Gideon’s system can prevent wars, stop crimes before they happen—save millions of lives. That’s worth more than your petty rebellion.”

“Diego, please,” I said, stepping beside Miguel. “The system isn’t what you think it is. It’s not saving lives. It’s manipulating them.”

He glanced at me; his gaze hard. “Stay out of this.”

Gideon’s voice interrupted. “Enough talk. Diego, secure the

Isabel POVThe explosion rippled through the building like a low growl, shaking the floor beneath us and sending loose cables swinging. The emergency lights flickered, casting long, jittery shadows. My heart was pounding as I stared at Diego, slumped over the console.“Diego!” Miguel shouted, rushing to his side.I followed; my legs unsteady. Gideon was gone, but his men would be regrouping, and the system wasn’t fully offline. The glowing text on the screen read Override in Progress, but there was no telling if it would finish before they found us.“Miguel, we have to move,” I said, my voice sharp but trembling.“Not without him,” Miguel snapped, checking for a pulse.“He’s breathing,” Miguel said after a pause, his voice tight. “We can’t leave him here.”“Then we carry him,” Marissa said, appearing in the doorway. “We’ve got incoming. Whatever you’re doing, wrap it up.”I looked back at the screen. The override was almost complete, but there was no way to speed it up. If we waited,

Isabel POVThe faint sound of the helicopter blades grew louder, a low hum cutting through the quiet forest. It wasn’t close yet, but it was moving in our direction.Miguel stiffened, his eyes darting toward the sky. Marissa crouched low, her hand gripping her rifle. Diego sat propped against a tree, his breathing shallow but steady.“They’re looking for us,” Marissa said, her voice barely above a whisper.“Of course, they are” Miguel replied. His voice was calm, but I could see the tension in his shoulders.“Can we move him?” I asked, gesturing to Diego.Miguel hesitated, then nodded. “We don’t have a choice.”I felt the weight of that statement. We were running on borrowed time, and every decision felt like a gamble.Marissa POVThe forest was dense, the canopy thick enough to obscure most of the sky, but the sound of the helicopter echoed between the trees. It wouldn’t be long before they spotted us—or sent a team in on foot.I moved ahead, scouting the path while Miguel and Isabel

Isabel POVThe faint murmur of voices drifted through the trees, low but distinct. My pulse quickened, every instinct screaming at me to move, to run.Miguel crouched beside Diego, his head tilting toward the sound. His expression hardened, and he motioned for me to stay low.“They’re close,” he whispered.“Too close,” I replied, my voice barely above a whisper.Marissa slipped through the brush; her movements nearly silent. She crouched near us; her face drawn. “Four of them,” she said. “Armed. Moving toward the hollow.”Miguel cursed under his breath, his grip tightening on his rifle. Diego stirred, his eyes fluttering open.“We can’t fight them,” I said, keeping my voice steady despite the growing panic in my chest. “Not with Diego like this.”Marissa nodded. “Agreed. We’ll have to outmaneuver them.” She said her voice very firm.Miguel glanced at Diego, then back at us. “You two take him. I’ll lead them away.”“No,” I said sharply. “We stick together.” My expression very firm and

Isabel POVThe sharp crack of gunfire echoed through the ravine, bouncing off the rocks. I froze. It wasn’t close, but it wasn’t far either.“They’ve found our trail.” Miguel said.“We need to move. Now.” Marissa said, her tone sharp.I glanced at Diego, slumped against the rock. His eyes fluttered open briefly, and he let out a weak groan. He wasn’t in any condition to walk, let alone run.“We can’t leave him behind,” I said firmly.Miguel didn’t even look at me as he slid his arm under Diego’s, hauling him upright. “We’re not.”Marissa scanned the trees, her rifle ready. “The sound came from the west. If we head east, we might have a chance to put some distance between us and them.”“Lead the way,” Miguel said, his voice strained under the weight of his brother.Miguel POVEvery step felt like a battle. Isabel POVThe burst of static from the hidden comm device made my heart stop. The voice that followed was unmistakable.“Don’t move. You’re surrounded.”Miguel tensed, his eyes narrowing. Marissa gripped her rifle, scanning the forest for movement.“Gideon,” I whispered, my voice barely audible.“Congratulations,” the voice said, almost amused. “You’ve made it farther than I expected. But it ends here.”Marissa glanced at me; her expression sharp. “He’s bluffing. If we were surrounded, we’d already see them.”“he’s not the kind of man who bluffs,” Miguel said. The comm device crackled again. “Miguel, Isabel, Marissa... even Diego. your little escape. Impressive, but futile. Surrender now, and I might let you live.”Miguel’s jaw tightened. “Not a chance.”Marissa POVI hated the way Gideon’s voice got under my skin, as if he was already one step ahead. But I wasn’t about to give him the satisfaction of seeing us panic.“We need to move,” I said quietly, keeping my rifle raised. “Now.”

Isabel POVThe nurse's whispered warning hit me like a slap. "You're being followed."Miguel stiffened beside me, his grip tightening on Diego's arm as we half-carried, half-dragged him into the small hospital lobby. "Who's following us?" Marissa demanded, her tone sharp and low."I don't know who they are, but they've been asking questions. They came through here earlier, showing pictures. They're still nearby.""We don't have time for this. My brother needs help."The nurse hesitated, her eyes flickering between Diego's pale face and the tension in Miguel's stance. Finally, she nodded. "Room four. Down the hall. I'll get a doctor."Marissa moved to the door; her rifle hidden beneath her coat. "I'll keep an eye out," she said, her voice calm but firm.I followed Miguel down the hallway, my heart racing. Isabel POVThe buzz of the drone overhead made me freeze mid-step. Marissa cursed under her breath; her rifle still hidden beneath her coat. Miguel’s grip on Diego tightened, his expression grim as he glanced up at the sky.“They’ve got eyes on us,” Marissa said sharply, scanning the horizon.Miguel’s face was tense. “We need to keep moving.”“Wait,” I said, holding up my hand. “Diego can’t handle this. He’s not ready to be moved like this—he’s barely stable.”Miguel hesitated, his jaw tightening as he looked down at his brother. Diego’s face was pale, his breathing labored.“She’s right,” Marissa added, her voice softening. “If we keep running, we’ll kill him.”Miguel exhaled sharply. “Then what’s the alternative? We can’t stay out here.”I glanced back at the hospital. “We go back in.” I said sharply.Miguel POVMy instinct was to argue, but she wasn’t wrong. Isabel POVThe footsteps grew louder. My pulse raced as I exchanged a glance with Miguel. Marissa raised her rifle slightly, ready but controlled. The door creaked open.Three men entered, dressed in dark suits, their expressions cold and professional. No visible weapons—but their rigid postures told me they were trained for this kind of situation.Miguel shifted, moving slightly in front of Diego. “Who the hell are you?”The tallest man, with a scar just above his eyebrow, raised his hands. “We’re here for you, Miguel. Your father sent us.”Silence fell over the room.Miguel’s expression twisted, a mix of relief and anger. “And where is he?”The scarred man kept his voice even. “Unavailable. But we’re under strict orders to secure your safety and assist with your brother’s care.”Miguel exhaled, shaking his head. “Of course, he sent his thugs instead of showing up himself.”The man didn’t react. “We’re here to help. Miguel POVThe heart monitor’s rhythm had stabilized, but the tension in the OR was heavier than ever.I stood frozen against the glass, my palms pressed flat, watching Diego’s still body beneath the bright surgical lights. Dr. Chen’s voice cut through the quiet hum of machines.“Electrical interference detected along the neural interface. Vitals unstable. We need to contain it—now.”The dual heartbeat continued flickering on the screen, chaotic and unnatural.Dr. Kumar, the anesthesiologist, spoke rapidly. “BP dropping—systolic down to 80. He’s losing ground fast.”Dr. Chen’s hands were steady, precise. “Scalpel. I’m isolating the main lead. Dr. Martinez, be ready to assist with micro-suction once I expose the implant.”The air felt thick, every movement calculated. A surgical nurse handed over the scalpel with practiced calm.Miguel’s father broke the silence behind me, his voice low but strained.“If they can’t control the implant’s electrical feedback, it could trigger full neural

Miguel POVThe sound of the flatline still echoed in my ears.Everything seemed distant—the frantic voices, the beeping monitors, the rush of medical staff around Diego’s bed. All I could focus on was his pale face, lifeless and still.A firm hand gripped my shoulder, breaking me out of my haze.It was the doctor. His face was serious, his eyes sharp with urgency.“We don’t have time, Miguel. I need consent for emergency surgery. Now.”I blinked, my mind sluggish. “What—what do you mean surgery?”The doctor’s voice stayed calm but unrelenting.“The implant. It’s interfering with his vitals. If we don’t remove it immediately, he won’t make it. We’ve prepped OR-1. You need to sign these forms.”A clipboard was pressed into my shaking hands, the medical jargon blurring together.Beside me, my father took a step closer. “I’ll sign. He’s my son—”I shook my head sharply.“No. I’m doing it.” My voice wavered, but I pressed the pen down, scrawling my name across the line. “Just... save him.”

Diego POVThe darkness had started to thin.Sounds drifted closer now. Voices, faint but clearer than before. My mind felt like it was wading through fog, struggling to surface.“Stay with me, Diego... Please... Just hold on...” I heard his voice calling out to me, Miguel.I could feel his presence, his voice cutting through the haze like an anchor. But something else was there too—a constant pressure in my chest. Cold. Heavy. The pain was distant but growing sharper by the minutes but there nothing I could do about it.And then—another voice. Harsher. Mocking.“You never were the priority, Miguel. You're just another piece in my game.” Gideon’s voice came on as I was suddenly not pleased, I tried to talk but couldn’t, I was shouting but no one could hear my voice.I fought against the weight pressing me down, forcing my mind to break through. I couldn’t stay here. I had to warn them.Gideon was still controlling everything.Miguel POVGideon’s voice echoed through the hospital speake

Diego POVI was floating. No pain. No sound.Everything felt... very quiet.I couldn’t tell if my body existed anymore. I wasn’t sure I was anymore. But there was something. A voice. Faint. Like an echo through water.“Stay with me, Diego. Please...” I hear Miguel’s voice calling out to me his voice laced with pain I could literally feel he is crying even if I couldn’t see.“Miguel?”I tried to respond, but my voice didn’t reach the surface. Nothing did everywhere was too quiet despite all my attempts.Memories drifted like shadows, pieces of broken glass reflecting things I couldn’t quite grasp. Flashes of faces—Gideon’s men. The cold, hard glare of a weapon pressed against my ribs. The gunshot. Pain. Then... nothing. And now, I was here. Trapped. But I felt him. My brother. Close. Desperate.I had to get back. I had to warn him.Something was still coming. Gideon...Miguel POVThe heart monitor screamed its relentless, flat tone.I couldn’t look away from Diego, his lifeless body s

Miguel POVThe steady hum of the ventilator echoed in my head, louder than the faint beeping of the machines keeping Diego alive. The pale blue light from the monitors cast cold shadows across his face, the only sign he was still here. Alive. Barely.I stood motionless by the door, unable to step closer. I’d been there for hours, watching, waiting—powerless. My father was across the room, hands tucked behind his back, staring at Diego like he was trying to memorize every detail. His face, usually so composed, was pale and drawn. The silence between us was unbearable.Marissa shifted in her seat near the window, glancing between us before finally standing. She walked quietly over to him.“You should sit,” she said gently as she pointed toward the empty chair closer to where she stood up from.My father didn’t move, his eyes still locked on Diego.Marissa sighed, folding her arms. “Look... Miguel POVI stood frozen at the doorway, watching as the nurses worked over Diego with practiced precision. The room felt too bright now, the sterile white lights almost blinding after the darkness we’d been trapped in. Machines beeped quietly as they secured him on life support—tubes, wires, and screens forming a fragile connection between life and whatever came after. The rhythmic hiss of the ventilator filled the silence.Isabel and Marissa sat in the corner, speaking in hushed voices. Their words were low, but the tension in the room made them echo louder than they should have.“He’s been through so much,” Isabel whispered, her voice strained.Marissa nodded, leaning back against the wall with arms folded. “Yeah. All this time... searching for his brother. Only to find him like this? And Gideon—”“That name,” Isabel muttered, clenching her fists. “He’s haunted us for too long. Every time we think we’re safe, he finds a way back.”I gritted my teeth. They weren’t wrong. Gideon had

Isabel POV“Why hasn’t the power come back yet?” the doctor demanded, his voice strained as his hands pressed firmly on Diego’s chest. Sweat clung to his forehead, his arms moving in a steady rhythm. The silence was deafening, broken only by the doctor’s rhythmic counting.Miguel’s flashlight wavered as he clenched it tighter. “Why isn’t this working? Where’s the backup generator?”The scarred man had disappeared from the room, leaving us in the dark with nothing but the dull beam of light catching Diego’s pale, lifeless face.Marissa pressed her back against the wall, breathing hard. “I’ll check the hall again.” She said as she walked out sluggishly.Miguel’s voice cracked. “You’re not going alone.”Marissa’s eyes met his, calm but serious. “Then stay here and make sure Diego keeps breathing.
