Chapter 34: Internal Shadows

Amara’s POV

My hands continued to shake.

The horror of the blood on my skin was still fresh even though it had dried. I couldn't remember what I'd done. I had no clue whose blood it was.

This is not taking place.

However, it was.

With strong gasps of breath, I staggered back. The murmurs in my mind became more intense.

Viktor's voice purred, "Run," before they discover your actions.

My ears throbbed with my heartbeat.

Then I ran.

I sprinted into the dark jungle, branches tearing at my arms. My ragged gasps were carried by the howling wind.

I needed to leave.

Stay away from the blood. Stay away from the truth.

Because if I stayed and they discovered me in this state...

Would I still be perceived as Amara?

Would they spot a monster instead?

I was walking over uneven ground. I went down on my knees after tripping. My fingers dug into the wet ground.

I balled my fists up. Amara, think. You must think.

The murmurs, however, persisted.
