Her sweet and small eyes fixed on the computer screen, her thin fingers and the keyword of her computer making the sound everyone in that company would recognize as a melody, the melody played on all companies, Amber didn’t seem to have the intention to stop for a while and give herself a break. The reports had to be prepared for the next meeting and there were no more than two hours left to meet the foreign ones.
Even if she knew she was going to be the one running that meeting with Damien, she couldn’t help but give more importance to her thoughts than to the meeting.
Finally, her fingers stopped, leading one of her hands to her head. Surely a headache.
“I can’t even concentrate,” she expressed, taking her bottle of water. “How come I’m going with Damien?”
“Aside from ugly, crazy?” Someone asked.
Amber looked at the person who had clouded her thoughts and her afternoon. Nancy, the best secretary according to her physique.
“May I help you?” Amber asked.
Nancy smiled before leading her look to her nails, all carefree. “Well, yes, you can. You will help me the day you disappear from this company. Don’t you understand your strange beauty is still strange to us?”
Amber just looked down. It wasn’t Amber was the ugliest girl in the world; it was she didn’t know how to dress. Maybe the real reason behind those comments was women were too good to know when there was a diamond in the rough.
“Okay, I think I have overreacted,” Nancy said, getting back to her obnoxious attitude.
“Where’s Damien?”
“Mr. Slimth is in his office.”
“Can I come in?”
“No, you ca-“
“Thank you!” Nancy cut her off.
Amber’s eyes widened in the mere instant she realized that the woman was acting like she had all the rights over Mr. Slimth. If Amber wasn’t allowed to do that even after they had grown up together, even when Amber and Damien ended up living under the same roof, why on earth would someone like Nancy do something like that?
“Nancy! Nancy!” Amber followed her.
The door of the office opened just for Nancy to find Damien flirting with another receptionist.
“Mr. Slimth, I couldn’t stop her,” Amber said.
By that moment, Damien seemed to be worried. Even though in the company Damien was well known for his extremely kind manners towards secretaries, it was still difficult for him to deal with two at once.
Even though Amber could have been made out of goodness and loyalty, every time she saw Damien with another person, selfishness blinded her heart. The reason? No one would know.
“It’s okay, Amber, you don’t have to say anything. Please, Miss. Nancy, did you bring the report? Oh! Miss. Mary, are we done with the documents?” Damien asked, leading his question to one to the other. “Miss Villanueva, you can go.”
“Yes, sir,” Amber said low.
“Wait, wait! Amber? I need your help.”
“What can I do for you?”
“Here,” Damien gave her his car keys, “do you think you can take my car to home?”
Amber, as always, nodded. Just two creatures in the world knew about loyalty; dogs and, of course, Amber Villanueva. Did it occur to him that she didn’t have a life? Did it occur to him she had been brought to him to serve him?
Finally, when the door closed, Amber could realize how vulnerable she was in front of Damien and his way of living his life. Moving her hear side to side, she tried to get rid of those thoughts. Damien was no more than her older brother. She couldn’t see him as a man when they had grown up together, when their dads were like brothers.
6:00 p.m. her shift was over, in her hands the keys Damien had given him. Even if the hour said she had the rest of the day to do whatever she wanted, to pave her way to her dreams, the keys in her hands said another thing.
Exhausted, Amber got into the car and after starting it off, her beautiful eyes were able to see Damien getting out of the company with Nancy, the new secretary she had interviewed not long ago. She couldn’t help but feel that pain in her heart. At least Damien seemed to be having fun.
Speeding up, Amber couldn’t take that image from her head. She had lived with Damien for over 18 years. Amber knew him; she knew his darkest desires; he knew his strengths and his weaknesses; he knew everything about him.
A funny memory came to her mind while she was driving in the middle of the rain.
“Damien?! Damien?! Damien?!” Amber came into his room with one of the packs the deliverer had brought. “Damien, I’m talking to you!”
And all of a sudden what Amber saw was her brother coming out of the bathroom completely naked.
Suddenly, the pack jumped out of her hands to use them to cover her eyes.
“What the hell are you doing here?” He yelled at her.
“Hey, I didn’t see anything!”
“Get out of here!”
Laughing, she turned around to open the door again.
Amber smiled at the moment she came back to her reality. But that smile didn’t seem to last forever since the car started making a weird sound and then the same one stopped.
“Oh! What happened now?”
It couldn’t be possible the car had stopped in the middle of nowhere, where the rain poured like that. No matter how many times she tried to start it off, the car never moved a pair of centimeters. Just the lights of it lit up in front of.
“What do I do? What do I do?” She asked over and over.
Needless to say the car had broken down. Just something like that could happen to her.
She was sure pretty women or even handsome and powerful men had never gone through something like that.
Ten, eleven, twelve, one, two, three, four after midnight and she hadn’t achieved to move the car. How come? She could know many things. She could be the most intelligent person in the world, but for cars, she never thought she would need it.
Six hours had gone by, the battery of her cellphone had died and even if she had just the time and enough battery to call Damien, she wouldn’t do that. Amber knew when Damien was having fun, there was nothing on earth that could distract him.
Six in the morning, just four cars had passed by her side and none of them had stopped to see if she needed something until the one that was fated to find her pulled over.
Three knocks on the window made Amber raise her head, which was relying on the steering wheel. Amber seemed to be afraid. She was in the middle of nowhere and if that man tried to do something to her, surely she wouldn’t run so much.
“Hello, can you low the window?” He asked.
All frightened up, she opened. “Hello?”
“Miss. May I help you?”
She just looked down, trying to think of her best answer.
“Can I help you with something?” He insisted.
“No, I mean, I called my… my… my-“
He smiled at the moment he realized how nervous she was.
“Don’t worry, I’m not trying to rob you,” he raised up his hands. “Listen, I’m a mechanic. Here you can see me,” he turned to let her see the car oil printed on his overall, “I can show you my toolbox. Really, I’m a mechanic.”
At that moment, Amber felt a little confident of his words. He was a young man, his smile could compete with the ray of the sun, his dark hair, his brown eyes and those thin lips. He was handsome, really handsome. If it wasn’t for his overall covered in oil, he could clearly pass as an employee of the company where she worked.
“Can I help you now?” He asked, giving her a smile.
“I think so,” and then, she got out of the car to give the man complete space.
What can we say of the time they shared? What can we say about the smiles they exchanged? Around thirty minutes had gone by for the car to be ready to continue its journey. Thirty minutes where she could see him as an honest man who didn’t try doing anything aside from helping a woman who was alone.
“And, it’s done!” He said, starting off the car. Once again, the machine roared just as a car like that could do.
“Oh! Oh, my goodness, I can’t believe it!” She jumped out of happiness.
“Well, it wasn’t something really hard to fix. We just have to connect this wire with this one.” He said, explaining to her.
The truth was Amber smiled as beautiful as he had never seen a woman smile.
“How much do I-“
“Shh! You don’t need to pay me anything.” He cut her off.
“So, should I believe you go here and there helping people and not receive any payment?”
“Well, it’s not like that, but I try to do this for women and please, don’t misunderstand me. I had liked to know my sister helped when I wasn’t for her.” The smile erased of his face.
“Your sister?” Amber continued.
“Yes. Anyway, you can drive now.”
“Thank you, thank you so much. You’re the best thing that has happened to me on this new day. Thank you.” She jumped, taking the keys from the hands of him.
“Drive safely.” He waved at her while a deep sigh came out of him.
He hoped to see her again.
Undoing the knot of his tie, Damien got out of his black car. It was 8 in the morning and he hadn’t slept very well after the fun he had with Nancy, just a simple secretary who ended up tangling in her finger.Everyone was waiting for him. The bodyguards at the entrance of the house were ready to be alerted by the presence of any of the two most important figures in that house.Yes, it seemed lie the house had been all alone since last night.“Good morning, Mr. Slimth.” One of the men greeted.“Where did you park the car Amber brought last night?” He asked, without looking at them.No one knew how to answer him. Amber hadn’t arrived home.“I asked you something!” He raised his crisp voice.“I’m sorry, Mr. Slimth but Miss. Amber hadn’t arrived home since yesterday.”Damien stooped and turned around to see them. “What did you say?”Walking back and forth in his office, Damien couldn’t help but worry about Amber. How come she hadn’t arrived home? How come she hadn’t slept there? Where th
TWO MONTHS LATERYawning while waiting for her friend where she had left her, Amber waited for Julie to come back with the coffees she promised after Julie could start talking about the new job their boss said he could offer her. Sitting on the bench beside the coffee shop they always went to relax before getting back to their tasks in the office, Amber was able to see her friend move with difficulty.“Hey!" Julie said, sitting next to Amber while giving her coffee.Amber couldn’t help but stared at her. She wasn't the same Julie she’d known for a couple of years. Julie seemed not to want to move so much. Even her right hand was on her belly.“What's going on with you? Are you okay?"Julie looked at Amber. “The cramps. I'm on my period!"Amber laughed it off. Every time she was on her period she went like this.“I can't believe you don't feel anything when you're on your period!" She whined.Suddenly Amber stopped laughing like those words had hit her hard. If she thought a little mor
With that idea in mind, Amber got out of the house, taking the keys of her car. The happiness printed on her face was unable to hide. She was pregnant with the most powerful CEO’s baby. It may be strange when they let people know she was pregnant with Damien’s baby knowing Amber and Damien were raised as siblings but in the end of the day, people could talk behind their backs as much as they wanted.Damien had taken care of her. That was her stronger feeling. When she arrived at the company, everyone looked at her like she was a ghost. Everyone knew she had called in sick. Damien let them know before the meeting of that morning started. They had to cover the work of that woman, something that no one agreed with. He seemed to have so many considerations with her and of course since she was like his sister.Amber continued her way through the aisles, Miriam and all the other secretaries looked at her with hate. They couldn’t believe a woman like her could be close to him, if only
SIX YEARS LATERSix years had gone by since the moment everything changed in such a way. Six years had gone by since the day Damien lost track on the woman he never thought he would lose one day. Why did she go? Where had she gone? How come he hadn’t been able to find her? Many questions, no answers because the only one who could give him an answer was the same who could be anywhere but far from him.The meeting had reached its blowing point. Damien’s mind was still on those words. It was the moment of the silence to take over.“No… No, it can’t, I can’t… you can’t!” Damien said, hitting the meeting table.Around thirteen men had their eyes fixed on him and just one of them had declared their truth.“The company isn’t going to success if you continue in the same way, Mr. Slimth.” “I can’t… I’m sorry but… I’m sorry but I can’t marry anyone just because.”“Mr. Slimth, you don’t have parents who can take over for you, you don’t have brothers, sisters or anyone the company can rely on
Waiting for Mr. Slimth in the meeting room where he had indicated him to stay, Nancy and her father were talking about what they were expecting from Damien.Nancy had changed so much. When Damien used her he didn’t expect she would be hiding a terrible secret. Nancy, among all the secretaries, night dancers and all women he could sleep with, Nancy ended up being the daughter of one of the shareholders of that company. When she decided she would make him regret his words, she was not kidding.“What do you want me to do, my little princess?” Mr. Hansen asked.Nancy was his only girl. Needless to say how overprotected he was. Needless to say he was willing to do anything to please his daughter. “I just want to marry him, I just want to be his wife, why is it so difficult?”“My baby, you’re such a young lady who shouldn’t be thinking about marriage and not with a man like him. He’s such an old man.”“Hahaha, don’t be like this, daddy.”“I can’t imagine my daughter being married to a m
“Why?! Why did you do that?!” Nancy cried out as soon as they entered into the mansion.“Please, my baby, I don’t want to talk about this, I know why I do the things as you see.”Nancy couldn’t stop her tears but of course her tears weren’t due to some pain a woman like her could be feeling –if there was any-, her tears were due to the failed whim she couldn’t conquer.Nancy didn’t know what else to do to convince her father. She wanted to marry him and no matter what she had to do to make that happen, she was willing to bet her own life. In the end of the day she had gotten everything she wanted, she just had to push a little harder and in a blink of an eye, she would be signing the documents to be Damien’s woman. Taking the keys of her car, Nancy got out of her house being seen by his father from upstairs. He couldn’t help but deny with his head. Nancy was a stubborn girl who never understood the reasons for the doings of his father and that was the problem, her father had put
“Don’t you want me to accompany you?” Aaron asked with his mouth filled with food, after having heard she was heading out with her friend to visit her father at the cemetery. At that moment Amber realized she had been talking with her friend without even making Aaron part of their conversation. The problem with Amber wasn't that she was an ungrateful woman who just cared about her and her daughter, the problem with Amber was she had suffered for so long, hiding the love she felt for Damien that the least she wanted to do was to feel in debt with a man. She knew herself very well. As soon as she opened her heart to a man it was a matter of time for her to fall in love with someone who will surely let her fall down.“Oh! It’s not necessary, Aaron. Thank you.” She smiled.Julie felt uncomfortable enough to say the more she could do was to move her eyes from Amber to Aaron. They were sharing the table, Julie had enough time to study the man who had helped her friend all along.“Aunt, can
Damien’s chest was going up and down like he had run in a marathon but the truth was he had indeed run in a marathon but a marathon of fears.Having Mr. Hansen in front of him, knowing he had ordered his men to beat him up if he dared to make a false move or even raise his voice couldn’t be for anything good. “Get your nasty hands off of me! What am I doing here?!” Damien raised his voice, hiding his real fears.“Are you really asking me that? I can’t believe our dear Mr. Slimth has no clue of what going on here.”“Let go of me! I don’t understand why you’re doing this.”That stupid question coming out of the mouth of the person who had taken the innocence of his daughter. “Did you really think I wasn’t going to know anything? Such a pity! You took the virginity of my daughter with lies and now, you’re going to pay for that!” “What?” Damien asked in such confusion. “What did you say?”This time Damien wasn’t being sarcastic or anything. He didn’t understand what the man was talking
Looking at the man who had come into the little house, Nayara being held by Aaron couldn’t stop staring at him. He seemed to be a good man despite how well dressed he was because in the little mind of Nayara, all the people who were as well dressed as him couldn’t be any good. They used to be merciless, ruthless, they always thought the world was made just for them. If only the little Nayara knew he was her father. What to say about the woman who was in front of him? What to say about her heart? Amber was shaking, after so long she had Damien in front of her. At least her last wish had been fulfilled.“I t-think I’ll take the girl to the park, Amber. I guess you have too much to talk about with your… with your guest.” Aaron didn’t even know how to refer to him.“Yes, please, take the baby to the park.”“Let’s go, my love, let's go, I’ll buy a big ice cream.” Aaron lifted the girl up. “Shhh! Don’t say it out loud, my mommy won’t let us buy an ice cream.” The baby said, putting a finge
How to express that love that had to be hidden from the one the heart was loving when it wasn’t allowed to? How to express the love he had for her when she wasn’t there? How to say that knowing her in any part of the world but not close to him was killing him?More than six years had gone by since the last day Damien had seen her. More than six years had gone by since the last day Damien dreamed of taking care of her, being by her side even when he wasn’t allowed.“Amber… Did you say Amber?“ Damien asked breathlessly.“Yes, Amber, she’s an amazing woman, she’s the best cook I’ve known… Oh! And her daughter, her daughter is pure innocence.”Damien was going to faint. Soon Damien was going to fall on the ground. Daughter? Amber after five years? She was a mother after five years? Was it the reason why she decided to run away? No! Damien had just heard badly, she couldn’t be a mom.Suddenly, Damien felt dizzy, the old lady ran to him and took him by his arm.“Hey, young man, are you okay
Damien’s gaze was called by the three little dishes on the watermelons. His gesture changed at the mere instant he recognized the prepared food as one of the most delicious dishes out of that town. Maybe he’s just found the perfect taste he could adopt for one of his franchises.“What’s this?” Damien pointed at the dishes.“Oh! This? I just bought something to eat. It’s delicious, the girl who prepares this is extraordinary, I’ve always told her to open her own kitchen but she doesn’t want to. Do you want to try it?” The old lady asked.Damien, for the first time, felt the warmth of someone honest. Amber had been right all those times when she said there were people out there more truthful than the ones around us.“Please, I would like to try it.”“Why don’t you come with me and accompany this old lady to eat? It’s hot outside.”Damien couldn’t help but smile. Why do the best people have to be away from him, even Amber? “Take a seat, boy, take a seat!” The old lady said, giving him
“You look like a princess, Mrs. Hansen!” One of the women who had helped her to get dressed said. She was happier than the same bride.“You’ll be the most beautiful bride that day, I swear.” Another woman said. All Nancy was seeing in front of the mirror was a woman who had gotten everything she wanted. There was nothing in the world she couldn’t get. She had realized that.A proud smile was drawn on Nancy’s face. She, dressed in a bride white dress knew sooner that she expected it to be, she was becoming Mrs. Slimth, the wife of a man who had no one, no sister-in-law to have to get along with, no mother-in-law to have to sign an agreement of peace, no father-in-law brainwashing his son saying she was marrying him just for his money. There was anything in the world she could ask for aside from being Damien’s wife.“No one like me,” Nancy said to herself in front of the mirror. “In two weeks I‘m marrying Damien Slimth. Proud of me!” She said, pulling up the dress. She was showing so mu
Flashes dazzling in his eyes, around 25 people were there ready to write down every single word that was about to come out from Damien’s mouth. The room where the press conferences performed was full of reporters. Finally the Slimth family was going to say something about their success. It had been years in the same position and barely Damien decided to give his precious time to answer fool questions but this time it was different, the reason why he was there was none but for the good of the person who could be anywhere but far from him. What to say about the man in the designer blue suit who was busy moving his eyes from side to side like he could measure in that way what to say and how many were going to listen to him? Maybe he had forgotten the press conference was going to be aired. “Mr. Slimth, what do you have to say about your current position in one of the most important companies of food? Is it true you will have to leave the position if don’t have a family soon?” Someone ca
