Chapter 7: A First Step
“Nice to meet you, Derek Reynolds,” she smiled at Derek, who stared at her in fear and shock. His mouth was wide open, and his face showed fear, shock, and horror. Derek stared at the most unexpected figure, as he tried to figure out if he was dreaming or seeing things. As his eyes stayed on Rose, his mind reflected on what had happened five years ago—the night he and Sofia had pushed her down into the ocean. He was certain he had seen her drown into the depths of the ocean, so definitely, he was obviously seeing things, because there was no way Rose could be back. “Are you alright, sir?” a voice pierced into his chain of thoughts, pulling him back to reality. “You have been absent-minded; are you sure you are okay, sir?” The voice proceeded. Derek stared stupidly for a while before letting out a reply. “I am fine,” he said, his eyes not leaving Rose, who only returned a smile. “Are you really okay? You seem flustered,” Rose spoke up, her eyes glittering around Derek. But Derek had no response for her; he was too shocked to reply. Rose stared at him, a smile lurking around her lips. She was glad about his reaction—that was exactly what she wanted and expected: to throw him into shock and confusion. Shocked by seeing her and confused about whether she really was who he expected. “I think we should continue the meeting,” she suddenly said. “I have no time to linger here; I have other important places to be,” she added with a stern smile. “Yes, ma’am, we will just continue,” Derek’s secretary answered immediately and went on to explain things to Rose. “All we want is for you to be the face of our company for a year, ma’am,” Mrs. O, Derek’s secretary, started. “Our company is willing to work with you because, if we work with you, it will boost our company’s growth and connect us with more potential clients,” Mrs. O cleared her throat and continued. “Working with us will not only achieve the stated benefits but also increase our reach locally and internationally,” she said with a smile and a light bow. “I know you will be wondering what you will stand to gain from us, and I won’t hesitate to inform you,” she continued, staring at Rose, who listened keenly. “So, as for what you will gain from us, you will gain more visibility, which is a great way to empower your occupation further.” “Not only will you be getting more visibility, but you will also be getting more potential clients, more contracts, more concerts, more money, and a lot more,” Mrs. O concluded with a smile and a bow. “It’s up to you now, Miss Rose. How does this sound to you? I am sure this is an offer you would be willing to take,” Mrs. O smiled, 109% positive that Rose wouldn’t refuse such a juicy offer. “This sounds fair,” Rose bluffed, as she expected, and her smile widened. “Yes, ma’am, this is fair enough. You see, this is a win-win situation for everyone. We would be winning, and you would be winning too,” Mrs. O added with a proud smile. Rose chuckled before replying, “Do you know what I love more about you? Your bravery and smartness.” Rose chuckled again. She grabbed her bottle of water, cracked it open, and gulped down its entire content. “It seems you don’t know me well, Mrs. O,” she continued, but this time with a stern smile. “What do you think I am? A fool? Did you call me out here and waste my precious time to tell me this?” she spoke, her eyes reflecting fury. “Listen! I have signed contracts with companies bigger than yours, and I know how things are done. You know, Mrs. O, I am someone with high principles who doesn’t cheat others and doesn’t expect others to cheat me either,” Rose said with a silly giggle. “Tell me, how can you call this a win-win contract when you guys stand to gain more?” Rose asked, her voice rising. “Listen, I have been in this business for five years, so I know everything there is to know. When you are ready for an honest deal, do well to let me know,” Rose concluded, rising from her seat. Mrs. O stared at Rose in great shock, never having known that Rose would discover that they stood to gain more. She knew Rose was the one to promote them, since she had millions of fans and followers. She also knew Rose had tons of more important clients waiting for her, so they weren’t really promoting her; furthermore, she knew they would earn more than Rose if the contract was signed. She had only followed her boss’s instructions, and now it had landed in a mess. And now she knew she needed to rectify the mess or face her boss's wrath. “Please wait, ma!” she screamed at the top of her voice as Rose made for the exit. She stood up and bowed her head in submission and apology. “I am sorry for lying to you,” she apologized, her head still bowed. “I did all of that because we didn’t want to lose you, so we thought lying was the best way to bring you to our side,” Mrs. O continued, shamefaced. Rose watched her as she apologized, and all she could do was feel grateful. Her plans were finally making sense, and this was the right time to implement them. “Hmm, that sounds interesting,” she giggled, to everyone’s amazement. “I am impressed that you saw your wrongdoing and apologized immediately,” she continued. All the while this was going on, Derek remained mute. He was still reeling from the shock of seeing Rose again. He couldn’t say or do anything throughout the meeting; he was more like a puppet used for decoration. As he watched Rose try to use the exit, he wished he could stop her, because he knew this deal was his life. But he just couldn’t do anything. He was still too shocked to act, but it was sad and pathetic to watch all he had worked for crumble down. He didn’t want to take chances, but at the same time, he couldn’t help himself. He watched as his secretary stopped Rose to apologize, and he felt a sense of hope. “Maybe she would sign the contract,” he wondered. But then he thought again, “If it was really Rose, she wouldn’t sign the contract so she could get back at him.” Reeling from these possibilities, Rose’s words struck him: “I will sign the contract.” He stared at Rose, his eyes wide open in shock. “Was he dreaming or hearing things?” he wondered in great shock. But the next words from his secretary proved to him that he wasn’t hearing things: “Really, ma’am? Thank you so much, ma’am. This means a lot to us, and we are forever indebted to you,” Mrs. O, his secretary, said, thereby proving to him that he really wasn’t hearing things. Rose watched the shock on Derek’s face, and her smile widened. Things were turning out just the way she wanted them to. Signing the contract was the first step in her vengeance.Chapter 8: Two can play the game“I think the deal is already signed,” Rose said, pushing the pen aside. She had just signed the contract.“Thank you so much, ma. This means a lot to our company, and I promise that we won’t ever give you a reason to regret signing this contract with us,” Mrs. O smiled, her face filled with gratefulness. She was sure to be promoted now that Rose had signed the contract; Derek had promised her a promotion if she could get Rose on their side.“I think that’s all for now,” Rose giggled from her sitting position, letting out a charming smile.“Yes, ma, that is all for you until the contract kicks off,” Mrs. O replied with a bow.“Okay then. I hope to hear from you guys soon,” Rose said, picking her bag and phone from the table and preparing to leave.“You have been so calm throughout the meeting. I hope you are good?” Rose asked, her eyes dancing around Derek, who still seemed lost and lacked an idea of what was happening around him.Derek stared at her f
Chapter 9: More than an EnemyDerek couldn’t stop himself from fearing the unknown as he waited for the receiver to pick up his call. “Damn!” He cursed in annoyance when the call wasn’t picked up on the first ring. “Where exactly is this punk?” He breathed out in annoyance, his teeth seething and his hand fisting into a tight blow.He jammed his hand against the wall as he dialed the number again. “You better pick up this time, you fool!” He cuffed, unable to contain his anger.As he waited desperately for the receiver to pick up his call, his prayer finally came to pass. “You fool, where did you drop your phone and go?” he barked at his messenger. “Do you know how long I’ve been trying to reach you, you fool?” he barked on, and the man on the other end could do nothing but apologize.“I’m so sorry, sir. I was bathing when you called. I… ““Oh, shut your trashy mouth!” Derek cut him short. “If my life was on the line and I needed you to pick up the call on the first ring, would you h
Chapter 10: A surprise Derek stormed out of his office, leaving his secretary with a clear instruction. “I’ll be back before you know it; take care of the office until I return,” he said, his face reddening with rage.He had never been so flustered by someone. The encounter had left him seething. Outside, his car waited, his driver patiently sitting in the driver’s seat.Derek yanked the front door open and barked a single command: “Get out, I’ll drive myself!” His eyes still blazed with anger, intimidating the now-terrified driver.Without hesitation, the driver leapt out of the driver’s seat and bowed his head in respect. Derek ignored the gesture, his focus solely on his mission. “I’ll call you when I need you,” he said curtly, before speeding off.The driver bowed again, watching as his boss disappeared into the distance.As Derek navigated the bustling streets of NYC, Rose’s threat echoed in his mind. “How could she?” he seethed, slamming his head against the steering wheel. His
Chapter 11: She’s back“Wait! Do you really mean what you just said?” Sofia threw at her husband, her face narrating shock. She clutched her body, her legs shaking with a sense of dread. Her face was etched with horror and shock, and her mouth was sealed with panic. Her long, flowy hair was scattered all over her face as she settled on the couch, and her face was a total mess.“What are we going to do? This might be the end of us,” she suddenly turned to Derek and said. Derek stared at her speechlessly. He knew that informing his wife about Rose’s return would put her in an uncomfortable mood, but he never thought it would make a great mess of her.“Put yourself together,” he heard himself screaming at his wife. He was obviously filled with anger by her attitude. He watched as she stood up from the couch and rushed to him like an angry dog. “Put myself together? Are you crazy?" she barked in his face, her eyes still settled with horror.“How am I supposed to put myself together?”
Chapter 12: A Meeting The ringing of the doorbell snatched Rose from her sleep. She rose up from the couch on which she had slept and sat up. She used her hand to rub her sleepy eyes and yawned out loud. “Gosh!” she muttered, still rubbing her eyes. “How long have I been sleeping?” she said, fixing her eyes on the wall clock, and her eyes flew open. “Darn! I slept for 3 hours?” She gasped in shock and stood up from the couch. “It’s exactly 5:20,” she suddenly realized. The kids should have been back by now, but they weren’t. As she stood there, she wondered what could be keeping them in school when the doorbell rang again. She didn’t realize the doorbell had rung before, even though it was the sound that woke her from her sleep. She was too asleep then to realize it. But now that her eyes were beginning to clear, and she was more aware of her surroundings, she heard it this time around.“It must be them,” she giggled, rushing off to the door. As she got to the door, she stared
Chapter 13: Bad NewsAs Derek’s driver pulled up in front of a massive mansion. Derek walked out of his car after gathering his important files and phone. He stood In front of the massive mansion and breathed out, as if he was trying to catch his breath.His eyes scanned the peculiar building, as it beauty shone forth. It was a three-story building, a type you would barely come across. It was built with the most expensive materials gathered from around the world; its architecture was top-notch, and the color complemented the entire building. It was painted a bright milk color.Huge trees surrounded the building, giving it a relaxing view. Benches were positioned under each tree, inviting visitors to sit and enjoy the view while the breeze from the trees swept through their faces.“Sir Derek,” Derek suddenly heard behind him, and he was forced to look back only to see his grandfather messenger.“Your grandfather asked me to bring you in; please, can you come with me?” The messenger b
Chapter 14: A shocking Discovery Sofia walked down the stairs, her eyes plastered with an evil grin. She seemed to be making a call as she headed to one of the parlour couches and sat down.“Oh, come on! I know what I’m doing,” she giggled into the phone. “You know, I’m so happy. Things are finally going our way,” she continued, her face etched with joy.“How much longer do I need to wait?” the receiver questioned, and Sofia giggled.“Soon, baby, in no time, we will have victory,” Sofia smiled, her heart laced with joy.“You know, I just can’t wait for all this to be over. I’m seriously sick and tired already,” the voice from the other end said.“I know, right? Don’t worry, everything will soon be over, so just hang in there for a while,” Sofia replied.“Right? So, how are things going in your own part?” Sofia chuckled.“Things are going really great, baby girl. Like, I’m literally having the upper hand in everything,” the receiver replied.“Oh, I see. You must really be on the uppe
Chapter 15: A Battle Line“She has a twin; a boy and a girl?” he screamed in disbelief as his eyes stayed on the picture of two young children, who would not be more than 5 years of age.“Why didn’t you tell me this sooner? This would have really gone a long way in helping me,” the man smiled at his messenger and tapped him on the back.The messenger returned the smile, feeling proud of himself. “I only got to find out about this this morning,” he chuckled to his boss, who gave him a weird look.“You only got to find out about it this morning?” his boss threw at him, and he nodded.“How did you find out about it?” his boss questioned further, a hint of curiosity in his voice.“It was sent to me by an unknown person who said they wanted to help you deal with Rose,” he replied to his boss.“Uhmm! This sounds interesting. So the person didn’t reveal their identity; it’s unknown?” the boss stuttered out, and his messenger nodded in confirmation.“Okay, then. Thank you, buddy. I think I n
Chapter 121: They Escaped Rose unleashed from the hug after a while and stared into Sofia’s eyes. “Sofia, why did you got me worried? You weren’t picking up your calls, neither did you call me back to inform me why you didn’t pick up.” She gave her a stern look and looked at the officer. “Why is an officer with you?” She shuddered after processing it.“Lol! Don’t worry,” Sofia tapped her shoulders and said, “She could sense the fear that lies beneath her question.” “There’s nothing to be scared of, okay? He isn’t arresting me or anyone,” Sofia added, her lower lip stretched in a light smile.“Okay, what is going on here?” Derek’s voice sliced into their conversation, and his eyes quickly moved around them. It was only then that Rose realized that he couldn’t see the two of them together, but then it was already late; he had already seen them, and she couldn’t hide it anymore. She tucked a piece of hair obstructing her view into the back of her ear and turned to Derek. “She is my s
Chapter 120: A Warm Embrace Dave had a sneer-smile on his face as he watched Sofia and the policeman walk out of the station. Everything was already plotted out; he was going to escape, dead or alive. He wasn’t done with his vengeance yet, so they had no right to lock him up. He knew deep down that he must complete what he came to do before he could have the peace he needed. Everything was already plotted out, and his escape plan would kick off now.“Does those two bastards think that I will let them have a great life after everything they have done to me?” He fisted his hands and turned to Anna, who was locked in the same cell with him. Anna gave him a mocking glare before replying, “And what possible can you do in this state?” She rolled her eyes as she spoke, and Dave could feel the mockery in her tone. “Are you downgrading me right now? Do you think I can’t do it?” He glared at her, his eyes burning with rage, but Anna didn’t care about the amount of rage in his eyes; she pre
Chapter 119: WorriesKendell let out a bright smile and turned to Derek. “You too, Dad,” she smiled, and Derek knelt down immediately. As the family knelt down, about to dive into prayers, the door to the hospital ward pulled open, revealing the doctor. They all looked at him, and the look on his face was enough to inform them that he had news.“Doctor, any news?” Rose stood up for the first and rushed to him, along with the rest of the family. As their eyes stayed on the doctor’s downcast eyes, they knew something was wrong.“What is it, Doctor? Can you just say what you came in here to tell us?” Rose interrupted again, and the doctor stared blankly at her for a while. He took his eyes off her, took a deep breath, and prepared to deliver the news. They all watched as he cleared his throat, as if his words were obstructed, before he dropped the bombshell: “We couldn’t find any matching kidney. I am sorry,” he announced.Rose grabbed his shirt. “What did you just say?” she stuttered,
Chapter 118: Let’s Pray“Doctor, I have checked the organ retrieval suite,” the nurse said with a bow, and everyone’s ears itched to hear his next words, as they were the main point.“I checked the organ retrieval suite, but I couldn’t find any kidney that matches his,” the nurse broke the sad news and the room went wild. “What are we supposed to do now?” Rose stammered, already losing it. “Is there no other option?” Derek fired, his eyes filled with disappointment. “What will become of my brother? I hope he’s not going to die?” Kendell wept, everything was too much for her tiny brain to handle.“What needs to be done, Doctor?” Rose stood up from her seat in a flash. “What needs to be done to save my son?” She moved to the doctor faster than anyone could say “no” and grabbed him by the collar. The astonished man managed to pull her hands off his collar, and when he successfully did, after much trial, he took in a deep breath.“What the hell can be done? Please,” Rose fell to the f
Chapter 117: A Sad NewsThey watched as the doctor gave another sad nod before deciding to spill the most anticipated news.“I am sorry to inform you, but your son couldn’t make it. He was…” The doctor couldn’t complete his statement when a nurse yelled from inside the ward, calling his attention.“Doctor! Doctor!! He’s moving,” the nurse yelled, and he rushed into the ward, shutting the door behind him before Rose could gain access. She was ready to follow him into the ward.“What is really happening?” she mumbled in fear, pacing back and forth in front of her son’s ward. As she paced, something remained in her mind: “Was the doctor trying to tell them they lost their son earlier on?" she reasoned, and as she did, her heartbeat increased; everything was playing too fast.“Please, I think you need to calm down, Rose. I am sure everything will fall into place,” she heard behind her, and turning around, her eyes fell on Derek, whose face was also filled with worry.“I am scared, Derek;
Chapter 116: Hug me More“You haven’t even discovered the most shocking truth, and you are already all over it,” Kendall intruded again, and Rose could feel herself almost going nuts.“What is in for her again?” she wondered.“Mom, do you know that Dad and Uncle Dave are brothers?” Kendell spilled the beans, which recklessly threw Rose off balance.“Wh…at are you saying?” Rose stuttered, breaking the silence that was already revolving around them like a solid rock.“You heard me clearly, Mom – Dad and Uncle Dave are brothers, but according to Dad, he thought Uncle Dave had died a long while ago,” Kendell added, and Rose could feel her head exploding from discovering so many secrets at once.“How…? How are they brothers? They…” Rose stuttered weakly; everything was just too much to process.“I think you have said enough,” Derek snatched the phone from Kendell, realizing all the secrets Kendell was spilling was too much for Rose to handle.“Your mom is currently at the hospital, so I do
Chapter 115: Messed UpThe kids rushed to their father, who hugged them tightly and didn’t stop pecking them. “I am so glad that you two are safe,” Derek said happily.“I am so glad…” Ken tried to speak, but he couldn’t complete his statement. He fell short of breath and started coughing like he was fighting for his life.“Ken!” Kendell and Derek yelled out his name. Derek held him and tried to find out what was going on. A few officers surrounded them, while the rest focused on Dave and Anna.Derek watched helplessly as his son took a deep breath and collapsed in his arms. “Ken!” he shouted, and shook him, but there was no response.“Dad, please let’s take him to the hospital, we need to take him to the hospital,” Kendell stammered, already in tears. She shook like a leaf as she spoke. She couldn’t bear the thought of losing her brother.“Quick! Open the door to the back car,” Derek shouted, and one of the officers did as he said. Without waiting another second, he rushed to the open
Chapter 114: Thrown in AweBut now everything was becoming clear to him; now he knew the reason his father didn’t include Daniel (Dave) in his will; now he knew the secret his gran”father was trying to hide from him when he asked him why Daniel wasn’t included in the will. “And that isn’t all, Derek; do you want to discover the most shocking truth?” Dave laughed out loud, and Derek was forced to stare at him in anticipation of his next words. “I killed your miserable father, Derek,” Dave confessed with hilarious laughter; he had no remorse in his eyes as he said this. “I killed him when I discovered my name wasn’t in his will. How could he be so mean as not to include my name in his will?” He laughed again. Derek watched as his brother spilled more secrets, but he just couldn’t bring himself to believe that his brother had actually killed his father. “How the heck are you responsible for Father’s death, you asshole?” he stuttered and watched as his brother released an evil laughte
Chapter 113: Revelation “We are surrounded by police officers, Dave,” Anna stuttered in panic, she was the first to witness the incident playing around them. “Police?” Dave mumbled, and looked behind him, and that was when he noticed the police officers surrounding them. The kids, on the other hand, jubilated, jumping up and down and screaming to alert the police officers that they were still stuck in the car.“Can you two shut the fuck up, or I will put a bullet through your tiny brains?” Dave yelled at them. He was already swimming in confusion; he was looking for a way to escape the police, and this was making matters worse.“But how the heck did they discover our location? Did you make any calls? Or anything at all?” Anna said in panic, and that was when he remembered that he called his brother Derek.“That asshole!” he yelled and hit the steering wheel of his car. “That idiot betrayed me again,” he lamented.“That idiot? Who exactly are you referring to? So you actually calle
