The alarm was already ringing, but my eyes were still heavy. I want to sleep some more, but I need to get up now. I grabbed my phone on the bedside and struggled to turn off the alarm because my sight was still blurred from lack of sleep. I suddenly felt the numbing sensation on my arm as I tried to pull away gently from Laia's embrace.

"Sh**! What did I do last night?" I whispered to myself.

My head was ringing intensely so I tried to stretch my neck and massage my nape to release the tension on my head as I slowly stood up while my eyes were partly closed. I yawned a few times while walking to the bathroom door.

I accidentally bumped my toe on a hard leg of the table near the bathroom and gasped, "Holy Sh**!"

I crouched in pain as I rub my toe while holding my breath briefly before springing up to walk limping to the bathroom. I took a shower in a hurry then wore my clothes back that still stinks with alcohol.

"F***! I don't have time to get a new set," I murmured while hurriedly fixing my clothes.

I rummaged in Laia's bag and asked, "Laia, do you have a perfume with you?"

"*sigh* Don't mind if I use it? It seems expensive though," I said while glancing in her direction.

I sprayed her perfume on my shirt and coat, trying to cover up the scent of the alcohol. It's fresh and cool scent made my heart flutter for some reason, remembering the scent of her skin last night while looking at her sleeping soundly on the bed.

"Sh**! Calm down Aziel!" I mumbled while looking at the mirror on the wall.

I grabbed Laia's phone that she dropped last night on the floor and was horrified to see the cracks on its screen—I tried to turn it on but it wasn't working anymore.

"F***! Laia! Wake up! Your phone is broken! I need to go now," I shouted, but she wouldn't budge.

She seemed exhausted because of last night.

"Sh**! I really need to hurry up," I mumbled when I checked the time on my phone while placing her phone on the night stand.

I left a note and one of my cards beside her phone before leaving the room in a hurry. I haven't even had a chance to get her number.

************************************

My name is Aziel Elrod, 23 years old, a graphic designer in a company named Grafitika Graphic Design Corp (GGDC). I live alone in my flat near Allegro Global City (AGC) in Taguig. I am an only child and my parents live in Manila.

It's not actually necessary for me to move out from my parents' house, but I wanted a place of my own. A home where I can freely invite my friends over without anyone nagging about our noises or even questioning who they are and where they came from.

Even though I already moved out, I never forgot my responsibility as their son.

"Hi Mom! I'm on my way to fetch Sienna," I said while facing my mother on a video call.

"Did you sleep late again? Your eyes look swollen. I already told you to sleep early. Have you been drinking again? I shouldn't have let you—" my mother nagged.

"Let him be. He's old enough to decide on his own," my father said.

"Mom, Dad, I'll have to go now. I'm in the airport already. Call you later," I said in a hurry.

I hurriedly ran inside and went to the waiting area—it was too crowded, but I immediately saw her in the distance.

"Sienna!" I shouted, while waving my hand.

"Aziel! Finally!" she screamed as she hurriedly walked towards me and jumped into my arms.

"How's your school?" I asked.

"I'm doing well in school and I won first place during the latest design contest in school. Hmm... It's weird. Did you change your perfume? Also... Did you go for a drink last night?" she asked while sniffing my coat.

I jolted--I thought I was caught. It's a good thing that Laia's perfume wasn't floral.

"Right! I did. I went with Carlo and the boys last night. We haven't had any time previously so they decided to hang out and chill at the pub. I couldn't decline," I explained.

"Hmm... I see... I like the scent of your new perfume. Can you buy me one too?" she asked, grinning as we walked out of the airport.

"I'll check later. I still need to finish a project for the upcoming international event that our company will attend in a few weeks. Let's grab some breakfast first before I send you home," I responded as I called a cab and helped the driver to arrange her bags.

Sienna and I grew up together because my mother took her in after her parents died in a car accident when she was still a baby. She's the only daughter of my mother's best friend and my mom is her godmother. She doesn't have any relatives who can take care of her so my mother took her under her care. They loved her like their own daughter. I sometimes asked myself if I was really their child. She's talented in designing dresses and received a scholarship abroad with the help of some of our relatives. We're well off, but we aren't wealthy enough to afford her studies abroad alone.

We grabbed some breakfast at a nearby restaurant and traveled to my parent's house. I was checking my phone subconsciously for some reason, though I haven't received any important message.

"Is there something else you need to do today? You've checked your phone multiple times already. Is it about the project you were talking about? But it's Saturday today..," she asked with suspicion.

"Ah... Yes, I need to meet some of my colleagues later for the progress of the project. We couldn't finish our task yesterday because there were some visitors that we needed to tend to," I lied.

I felt anxious because Laia hasn't contacted me yet. Was she still asleep? I felt uneasy for some reason and I couldn't explain why.

We arrived at my parents' house, but my mother didn't let me go until I had my lunch despite explaining that I still have work to do. After lunch, I rushed back to the hotel where Laia and I checked in. It took me 2 hours to travel and hurriedly checked if she was still there, only to find out that she already checked out. I checked my bank account to see if I could trace her location, but she didn't use it. I waited until the next day, but not a single transaction was made using the card that I gave to her.

************************************

The next morning, I barged into Carlo's place.

"Man! Let's grab some drinks!" I said while walking straight to his sofa like it was my own home.

"Dude. Do you know that it's still early? What brings you here all of a sudden? Did you forget that I'm not a morning person?" he nagged while yawning as he tried to make some coffee for the two of us.

"Is it possible to trace the location of a card even if it's not being used?" I asked.

Carlo is a freelance programmer and knows how to hack, though he doesn't do that often for security reasons.

"No dude! It's entirely impossible. Just block the card. How did you lose it anyway?" he answered.

"I didn't lose it bro! I gave it to someone," I replied.

"What?! Why? Wait... Is it a girl? You didn't even get her number and gave your card in haste? What were you thinking? Do you know her real name? Let me check if I can trace her social media accounts," he nagged while placing the coffee at the table in front of me.

"Whoa! Relax bro! It's Laia. I gave my card to her," I answered.

He suddenly looked at me in disbelief, then screamed, "Are you kidding me?! L-Laia?! Laia Dominic?!"

"F*** man! I'm serious! Yes! It's Laia Dominic," I replied while he was sipping his coffee.

"Ugh! Sh**! Hot! It's hot!" he screamed with his tongue slightly sticking out, placing his coffee down in a haste, causing it to spill a little.

"F*** man! Was it really that unbelievable?" I asked while helping him to clean the spilled coffee on the table.

"Man... Did the sun rise from the west?" he mumbled.

"Shut it bro!" I jolted in irritation.

"Ahem! I mean... I thought you went to fetch Sienna yesterday? So when did you two meet?" he responded.

"After I got out of the pub, I kinda saw her wasted alone outside and couldn't leave her so I brought her with me to the hotel near the airport," I explained.

"Wait. Technically speaking, you picked up a drunk lady on the street—" he said while pausing briefly.

"Yeah..," I replied while nodding.

"Brought her to a hotel..," he added, speaking slowly

"Hmm..," I replied.

"Had s** with her then left her the next morning without even getting her number... Man! I didn't know you're such a beast bro! How could you do that?!" he continued with a disgusted look.

"Wait, what?! F*** dude! She's the one who provoked me and we were both drunk. She's still asleep when I left the hotel to fetch Sienna. I left her a f***ing note and my card because I wasn't sure what time I could return, but when I got back, she's already gone. She didn't even contact me. She hasn't used the card even once since yesterday," I explained.

"She left on her volition, like nothing happened. Why do you need to find her? Don't tell me you've fallen for her after a one night stand. That doesn't sound like you," he replied while drinking his coffee.

I sipped the coffee and responded, "F*** man! I just want to make sure she's alright."

"Fine! I'll check it man! Stop sulking, it doesn't suit you," he finally agreed.

It's been weighing me for such a long time. Laia's identity was extremely mysterious. Even though we attended the same grade school. No one could actually identify which family she came from. Also, her parents or relatives never participated in any school activities. She was exempted from those activities for some reasons. Despite being a loner, no one tried to bully her except me. "I was really a j*rk back then," I whispered while I was in front of my office computer. "You're still a j*rk though," a coworker and friend, Eric, sitting beside me said while tapping my shoulder and bursting into laughter. "Sh*t!" I exclaimed, realizing I was talking aloud. Eric laughed as he looked away and continued with his task. I also did the same, but I couldn't focus on my work. ************************ A week has already passed and Carlo hadn't gotten back to me regarding Laia's information so I decided to drop by his house. I rang his phone when I was already around the area. Ring! Ring!

The night I lost sight of Laia was also the last time I tried searching for her. I spent most of my time in the office and even at home doing the designs and reports that were assigned to me. I was currently tasked with making a design for the landscape of a multibillion beach project of a client whose identity was hidden by the company. The contact I was given was the secretary of the client named Daniel Adler. He's been so unreasonably stingy for some reason. I had to redesign the whole draft multiple times because he always rejected it, saying it wasn't up to their standard. I already had my supervisors and managers involved in the design, but we couldn't figure out what was wrong with the design. "He didn't even point out what was wrong with the design, Sir," I complained. "I know. Give up the project, the management will take care of the rest. Focus on the upcoming events," my supervisor asserted as he took the files from my hands. I felt defeated and annoyed. It was the fir

I never really cared whomever I ended up with. However, marriage is quite insufferable for a happy go lucky like me. Will she cooperate or will she let me die without mercy? "Hah! Laia... Is this what you were talking about that night? I feel like I'm a moth caught in a blazing fire," I sighed, covering my eyes with my right arm, lying flat on a soft and unfamiliar bed in a huge unfamiliar room, and guarded by armed men by the door. I felt like a prisoner whose life is about to end. I don't even know if I am already regretting jumping into this mess. I only felt sleepy and uneasy. Let it be if this will be the end of me. I wanted to think more about the situation, but my body suddenly shuts down on its own. It was already bright outside. "Did you sleep well, Mr. Elrod?" Mr. Adler asked. "I'm not sure if it's a good thing, but I did," I replied as I rolled out of the bed. I felt refreshed since they are no longer pointing their guns against me. Though I still feel jitters from see

I woke up early the morning on the day before my wedding, feeling restless and anxious. I tossed and turned in bed for a few minutes before finally getting up and deciding to go for a jog to clear my head.I quickly changed into my running clothes, put my headphone on while playing an upbeat song and headed out into the cool morning air at the park three blocks away from my apartment.I pounded the pavement with each step, trying to clear my mind as I jogged through the park."I couldn't believe that I am getting married tomorrow, especially to a woman I had once loathed," I sighed as I trudged with an overwhelming mix emotion about my situation. As I ran, memories of the night he had slept with Laia flooded back to me. I arrived at the chapel early with Mr. Adler, clutching a bouquet of beautiful flowers that I had purchased for Laia. Feeling nervous and unsure about my decision to marry Laia. I am still not sure if I am ready for this kind of commitment. As I entered the chapel, I saw Mr. Adler stopped walking with me and stood by the door. I approached him and handed over the bouquet of flowers I had bought for Laia."Could you please give these to Laia?" I nervously asked Mr. Adler, my voice shaking slightly in nervousness as I looked at all the men surrounding me. "I want to apologize for the way things happened before and I want to surprise her before the wedding."Mr. Adler smiled genuinely and nodded, taking the bouquet from my hands. "I'll make sure she gets them," he said. I watched as Mr. Adler walked away and disappeared into the chapel. I took a deep breath and tried to calm his nerves as he approached Mr. Dominique, who was standing in front of the altar beside the officiant with a wea

The villa that Laia's father had prepared for us was a beautiful, secluded property with stunning views of the ocean. As we arrived, Mr. Adler reminded us of the importance of our union and left us alone. As we settled into the villa with the help of the people arranged by Laia's father, we found ourselves feeling awkward and unsure of how to interact with one another. We had spent the past month apart, and our one night stand seemed like a distant memory. The butler and the head maid lead us to the room on the second floor that we would be sharing from today onwards. I was staring at Laia's face the whole time that I didn't even remember the name or the faces of the servants because she was so silent and it was making me extremely uncomfortable for some reason.I stopped by the door looking at a huge master bedroom with a huge window that could oversee the ocean in the distance. There was also a king-size bed on the left near the window and a huge bathroom on the right. The wardrobe

I felt like I was on a roller coaster ride just a few hours after our wedding. We still haven't had a good conversation because of Laia's condition. I don't even know the extent of her condition because she refused to see a doctor.“Try to take a nap. I'll wake you up when lunch is ready,” I suggested after she finished drinking the soup prepared by the maids. She nodded obediently and pushed the tray with the bowl towards me, so I took it away from her and placed it neatly on the table near the bed. Then, I helped her lay down on the bed properly before sitting back down beside her, stroking her hair to sleep.I may not know much about taking care of sick people, but I know how to lull someone to sleep because I used to take care of Sienna when we were young and my parents were busy with their respective jobs. After Carlo and Sienna's exquisite wedding, Laia and I discovered ourselves in a serene corner of the resort's garden. The waning sun cast a gentle, warm glow over the surroundings as we distanced ourselves from the jubilant celebrations. The air carried the delightful scent of flowers, and in the distance, we could hear the soothing waves caressing the coast. We trekked together, our fingers entwined, and contentment surged through us. The brisk ocean breeze and the subtle saline sea aroma, nearly eclipsed by the flower's fragrance, stirred up cherished memories. With a grin, I inquired, "Recall our first New Year together?" as we settled on a nearby bench."That day was full of joy, shared with our friends and families," she chuckled. "I believe it's also the very same day when their relationship took off.""Who? Carlo and Sienna? How did you find out?" I asked, perplexed since I hadn't told her yet how I discovered Sienna's pregnancy two years ago, during her

The twilight deepened as I paced back and forth in a silent and dimly lit corridor in front of the operating room. Daniel Adler's operation took hours due to the tricky position of the bullet inside his body, while Mr. Stone was already in the recovery room, surrounded by law enforcers who took turns keeping an eye on him."I have to go home now and check on my wife and Anika," Carlo said as he walked near me. "You should relax yourself a bit.""Carlo is right," Eric interjected, his voice a comforting anchor amid my turmoil. He urged me gently with a supportive tap on my back. I found myself in profound silence, staring at the room's ceiling. The pristine white expanse seemed to reflect my inner turmoil, a cruel reminder of the revelation about Olivia Harrington that had shaken me to my core. I sat at my desk, feeling overwhelmed. I forced deep breaths to steady my racing heart. Each beat resonated in my ears, echoing the emotions welling up inside. At the same time, my head throbbed with anguish, and tears blurred my vision. Each fleeting moment stretched endlessly, and the surroundings dissolved into obscurity as I grappled with the surge of intense emotions. It was as if the weight of the entire universe rested on my shoulders, and all I could do was hold my breath, adrift in the chaos of my thoughts and feelings. After I regained some composure, taking a deep, shuddering breath, I reached for the company phone. I summoned Carlo and Eric to my office, maintaining a steady tone despite my inner restlessness. I froze, my heart pounding as though it might burst from my chest. My hands trembled as I grasped my champagne glass, my fingers slick with moisture. It couldn't be her, I reasoned. My mind is scrambling to rationalize the absurdity of the situation. Laia had been missing for a year despite our best attempts, and the agony of not knowing her fate had been a continuous weight on my shoulders. However, the deeper hole kept opening up inside me as she moved nearer, and the facial features became apparent clearly. It was her. The same hazel eyes that once sparkled with frivolity and comfort are scanning the space in a vain attempt to locate someone. The edges of her lips curled up in a gentle smile that carried the power to dispel all anxiety.I put my champagne glass back on the table and started walking in the crowd, looking at them with mixed feelings of hope and anxiety inside me. Time seemed to have stopped, and I felt neither the piercing eyes nor the whispers behind my back. It was

As the night wore on, Sienna and Carlo prepared a makeshift bed in their living room for me.
