A month later, things returned back to normal.
Victor's and Rina's reputation was restored and everyone knew by now that they had Lucas backing them up.
Erica's friends made up with her, which was not a very hard thing to do since they had stopped throwing when Erica ran into the hall calling out to Luna as her sister.
Desmond's life did not change much since the military academy, although essentially is another faculty of the school, has its own war zone which functioned almost separately from the other faculties. He has already successfully made his own connections there, who then helped to cover for him when he came to his sisters' aid.
Luna experienced a little dissing and occasional harassment but it never got too bad because she seemed to kill their vibe each time. Not only did she have a very slack expression on all the time, she also knew the right things to say to satisfy their ego.
Luna was now in the library as usual, completely immersed in her studying. Since nothing out of the ordinary was happening, she paid Lucas no attention. This made it possible for Lucas to study her at length without her knowing.
Lucas was still struggling to understand the enigma that Luna was.
He took note of what she was studying each time, thus noticed how she struggled with understanding concepts that he had long ago mastered and how she tried to make up for her slow understanding with pure and intense hard work.
He even did a little digging into her records and background to find out about the kind of person she was. Nothing stood out about her. In fact, he found out a lot more about her siblings and their achievements in the process of doing so than whatever he managed to learn about her.
Everything only served to puzzle him further. She seemed so unremarkable and common. So why could he not understand the things she said which sounded weirdly accurate? How does she stay so calm about everything that was being done to her? Why could he not stop his eyes from drifting to her from time to time? Why does she make him feel so puzzled and irritated at the same time?
Today was no different.
Lucas looked up from the screen of his laptop, closed his eyes, and titled his head from side to side. Despite his full intention to return to work after stretching his neck muscles for a bit, his eyes went towards Luna instead.
The sunlight from the large window by her side was at an angle that lit up her face. The plum blossom was in full bloom in the background. It was a very pretty scene to behold but Luna looked as ordinary as ever. If it had been Rina in her place, this same view may have been able to stir the hearts of people.
Nonetheless, Lucas found himself unable to tear his eyes away from her.
/Does she not find the sun glaring?/
At the same time that he had that thought, Luna happened to turn her head slightly. His eyes widened a little bit in surprise. There were some golden specks in her eyes that he never noticed before. As quickly and suddenly as it appeared, it disappeared with the slightest tilt of her head.
/Was it just the sunlight?/
He got intrigued and waited to see if it would appear again. Without his realisation, he was effectively distracted from his work.
Unfortunately for him, he did not get to observe for long before he heard Victor's voice boom throughout the silent library. "Luna Lee!"
Everyone in the library jumped in shock and turned towards the source of the disturbance.
/Goddamn idiot./ Lucas's mood instantly turned sour. He then turned his head back to look at Luna, feeling curious about her reaction.
Luna's gaze shifted from the direction of the library's entrance to Lucas when he turned his head to look at her. After holding his gaze for a short while, she calmly but swiftly packed her things then left the library by walking behind the bookshelves.
She was convinced that meeting Victor spelled trouble. The only reason for people like them to pay attention to someone like her was that she would be the trigger for another conflict between them and Erica.
/How dumb. Normally no one would notice or know where I am besides Erica and Ge Ge. All of a sudden Victor knows where exactly he can find me just because he wants to./
Not long after she left her seat, Victor came from a different direction.
"Lucas, do you know where Luna is? I was told that I could find her in the library." Victor asked without bothering with even a simple greeting.
"Why are you finding her?"
"I overheard people spreading some malicious rumours about us again!" Victor said through gritted teeth.
Lucas sighed. "How do you even know that it's her?"
"Who else could it be?!"
"She's not the one. Go get your facts right before you let the real culprit escape." Lucas said dismissively.
Just as he intended to return to his work, Rina appeared behind Victor huffing and puffing. She had obviously been running after him. "Victor... I told you not to be rash... You would scare the culprit off this way. Be patient, learn from Lucas, and we'll eventually catch whoever is responsible, alright?"
Victor hugged Rina. "I'm sorry. I got so impatient because I know you're really hurting. Did you really think I wouldn't notice?"
Rina's eyes teared up and she cried in his chest.
Lucas glared at his laptop. A dull ache gradually spread in his heart the longer he listened to Rina's soft sobbing. After grinding his teeth together for a long time, he still could not hold himself back from promising to help the both of them once again. Right after he did so, Luna's words from before echoed in his mind, putting him in a very bad mood.
The following days only made his mood worsen. It got so bad that he had migraines and had to rely on painkillers for the pain to be tolerable.
The culprit and rumours got bolder ever since news about Victor finding Luna spread.
Victor, however, continued to ignore his warnings and advice to lie low and not do anything that would anger anyone. He also continued his search for Luna in an effort to confront her, refusing to believe that it was not her. He was sure that he would be able to get her to confess her sins.
As a result, rumours increased and worsened each time. It was like a vicious cycle. This made the search for the one who started it all even harder.
Lucas began suspecting that there were more than just one person involved this time. Seeing how this matter may have snowballed into something beyond what he could handle alone, he decided to discuss it with Victor.
"Where in the blazing hell are you?!" Lucas shouted into the phone, his migraine making him especially testy.
"I'm at her house."
"What?!"
"I can't hold back any longer! Rina's breaking down and she stopped coming to school! She can't take it anymore!" Victor hung up the phone then exited his car to ring the doorbell to the Lee family's house.
The family of five was still gathered at the dining table about to finish their dinner when their domestic helper came to inform them of Victor's visit.
They all looked at Luna, asking without words if she wanted to greet their guest. Only Erica did so with a frown on her face.
/After all the trouble of avoiding him... Colour me surprised if Erica isn't triggered by this./
"Just tell him that I'm not the person he should be looking for. If he still insists to meet me, just tell him that we're not receiving any guests. Thank you, Sal." Luna then encouraged her family to ignore the disturbance and continue eating in peace.
By the time they finished their meal, Sally still had not returned.
Erica intended to step in but Luna stopped her. "Just ignore him. He's really just a dog barking up the wrong tree. Let's trust Sal to send him away."
Erica pursed her lips then held onto Luna's hand to return to Luna's room. Knowing that Luna would study the night away, she lazed on Luna's bed while browsing through the news feed of her social media accounts on her phone. She had no intention to let Luna out of her sight while Victor was around.
After a long while, Victor continued to stubbornly stay at their gate even after Sally left him alone. He refused to return until he saw Luna.
Her parents got fed up and went to meet him at their gate.
"Your name's Victor, right? Son of Principal Koo?" Mr Lee asked.
"Mr and Mrs Lee, I'm still waiting to see Luna. Please get your daughter to meet me. She keeps avoiding me."
"Victor. You do realise that you're outside of school, right?" Mr Lee crossed his arms and stood with his feet shoulder-width apart.
Feeling a little intimidated, Victor let his tongue slip, "So? If your daughter was not so good at being a coward-"
"Victor. Seeing that you're still a child, I'll let you off this time with a warning. Don't insult our children." Mrs Lee smiled sweetly while the look in her eyes revealed her evil intentions. "Now, run along home. I'm sure your father would not like to hear of this."
"... Can you please ask miss Luna to stop avoiding me at school? I'd very much like to speak to her." Victor very reluctantly changed his phrasing to sound more polite.
"I'm fine with passing that message on but are you sure you want me to do that? The school is now just a playground for us adults."
Understanding her unspoken threat, Victor apologised before running home with his tail between his legs. After he calmed down, he realised the gravity of his actions and regretted it greatly. He did not know what came over him that made him do something so brainless. Now he could only hope that Luna's parents would not tattle on him to his father.
"Sugarplum, why did you bother warning him? Let's just deal with the nuisance that's bugging our baby."
"Honey… Don't you think it'd be more humiliating for him if our Luna is the one who gets to toy with him?" She tapped his nose lovingly.
"Ahh… You're as cunning as ever." He grinned and hugged her around her waist.
"Let's first make sure that Luna's coping well."
Erica had shared with her parents about how Luna was speaking weirdly recently and it worried them as well. If it carried on, they would consider asking Luna if she did not mind going for a psychological assessment.
"Luna baby?"
Luna looked up and turned around to face her parents.
Erica also looked past her phone to eavesdrop.
"Sorry for disturbing you but how are you doing in school?"
"Is that Victor boy being too much of a disturbance to you? It sounds like he's been trying to get hold of you for a long time." Her father went straight to the point instead. He was too eager to help her if she needed it.
Luna shook her head and smiled reassuringly. "I'm doing perfectly fine."
Her parents looked at each other then looked at her again.
"Alright. Keep up the good work, okay?" Her mother stroked her head.
Luna nodded then the two of them left the room. She glanced over to Erica who still has her eyes glued to her phone.
/She's definitely unhappy./ Luna sighed inwardly. /So much for preventing my meeting with Victor./
"You know… I'm really okay."
Since there was no one else in the room, Erica knew that Luna was speaking to her. She put down her phone in defeat and pouted at Luna. "That's what you always say."
"Please don't do anything? I'm happy with the way things are."
/How can she really be happy with someone like him being such a huge nuisance? She's been chased around school and her routine's all ruined because of him. Now he even has the cheek to come running here./
"It's actually getting really creepy that you're always guessing when I'm planning something evil in my head."
Catching how Erica did not promise her to not do anything, Luna turned off the table lamp and shut her laptop, then joined Erica on her bed. "Let's sleep together tonight, okay? Cheer up."
"... I'm no longer a little girl… You don't have to be so worried about me..."
"Sorry, just as we'll always be babies in mother's eyes, you'll always be my little sister in my eyes." Luna smiled a little helplessly.
Having already brushed their teeth earlier, they tucked themselves into bed and held hands to sleep.
/I'll make him feel what I'm feeling right now… No. A thousand times worse./ Vengeful thoughts filled Erica's mind before she drifted off to sleep.
On the other hand, Luna fell asleep questioning her ability to change the way things were progressing.
The days passed by uneventfully.Since Victor no longer tried to hunt Luna down in school, she could return to peacefully studying in the library once more. Although Luna could come up with several possible reasons for Victor's behaviour, she believed that it was no mere coincidence that he would suddenly be so obedient now.The same private investigator from before was hired to follow Erica again. The reports she received this time were very normal. Unlike before, nothing stood out to Luna. Erica went to classes in the morning, then went for her extra curricular activities or hung out with her friends after class. Like Desmond, Erica was doing a good job at establishing the contacts they may need in the future.Luna glanced at her laptop and books in front of her. Compared to her siblings, she already had her hands full with just her studies. As such, the only times she could attempt at networking was during class and group works. However, it was never successf
When Luna regained consciousness, she blinked her eyes slowly several times. Her mind felt a little foggy and her body felt incredibly light. This weightless feeling was a little unnerving but nice at the same time. She saw an endless stretch of darkness in front of her that could have made the fears of any claustrophobic person act up. If not for the faint glow of her body, she would have doubted if her eyes were even open./This... Looks like I'm finally dead huh…/[For the moment you are.] A very deep voice suddenly reverberated through the entire area and her core. Her shoulders jumped in shock and she looked around repeatedly but could not find the source of the voice.[Do you wish to live?] The same deep voice asked her.Luna remained speechless for a while. /Is this God?/Before she could ask anything, he replied.[No, but I am an entity beyond your under
Stifling heat and stuffiness suffocated her the moment she regained consciousness. A thick smell of sandalwood all around made it even harder to breathe. It did not help that the breaths she took were already shallow and weak. Luna tried to open her eyes, but found that it took significant effort before her eyelids finally lifted. Ugly dark yellow draperies and a wooden bed frame was all that she could see. It took awhile for her to register that it resembled the top of a traditional Chinese bed frame. /What in the world… What happened? What's happening? Am I dying again? Where am I?/ As if in response to her questions, she experienced a migraine attack that was so painful it made her nauseous. At the same time, memories and knowledge that were not hers flashed before her eyes. Everything she saw was from the eyes of a girl named Chen Xinyi. Xinyi was the only child of the second concubine to a high-ranking court offici
There were books on plants, poison, martial arts, and spiritual cultivation. The only thing in this world that had piqued her curiosity and interest was the existence of spiritual energy. It was something that could be cultivated and was mixed in with martial arts. Something that her original world did not have. One's spiritual energy was classified into four realms. There was Earth, Sky, Heaven, and God realm. Each realm was then divided further into three levels that signified how well they have assimilated their spiritual energy into their martial arts. It consists of low, mid, and high levels. An average person could practice and cultivate their way to high level sky realm by 15 years old. Whoever progressed beyond that would be considered talents and geniuses. Since normal martial artists without any spiritual energy were basically powerless in this world, people who could not cultivate were considered wastes. Xinyi was one of those wastes in society, du
A fluctuation in the air caused a handful of people to look up from eating or pause their conversations. However, many resumed what they were doing, unbothered by the slight oddity. "What happened?" Hui Shan asked the boys, who had also been disturbed. Wang Wei passed the question to ZhangYong to answer by looking at him. Zhang Yong was the highest level among them, so he could provide the most accurate answer. "Did someone high level appear?" Hui Shan enthusiastically guessed in a hushed voice. Zhang Yong shook his head. "It's just a breakthrough, and only into Sky realm." Hui Shan relaxed, but Wang Wei and Zhang Yong stayed pensive. "Hui Shan, do you know anyone invited who's around 12 years old?" "En, but from what I know, they've all broken through to Sky realm already." As soon as she answered the question, she caught on to their worry and so contemplated along with them. / Was this person a late bloomer or a genius? /
Xinyi spent the rest of the evening and night reflecting on and reading up about the use of spiritual power, cultivation practices, and martial arts. What she found was that with enough skill, one would be able to cultivate all the time. However, the optimal state for cultivating was still by meditating. There was nothing about spiritual power that she did not already know. It was, however, noteworthy to her that there was a caution to not be restricted in their thinking, because not all spiritual power uses were documented. Family secret arts existed and it was possible for people to create new uses everyday. Suddenly, a memory about a story she had read when she was still alive got refreshed in her mind. That story had spiritual people but also spiritual beasts and spiritual plants. /How did I forget about this?/ Xinyi closed the book and rushed back to her courtyard. She then dug out 6 small pots from the tool shed and plan
In the last week of every month, ZhangYong diligently freed up some time so that he could find Xinyi. Through experience, he quickly learnt that the only way he could meet her was after he met HuiShan. Otherwise, he would only be told that she was too sick to receive any guests. He never really understood why that was the case but decided to roll along with it. Their sparring matches never lasted for more than half an hour. Their matches ended as abruptly as it began and he always left with the same satisfied smirk. His brief disappearance within the estate was long enough for some to notice. Tongues began to wag. Gossip about him contained stories about how he was having dalliances with a maid in Xinyi's courtyard. It was not a secret how abandoned Xinyi's courtyard was, since it was never used by the sickly bedridden owner. While everyone tried to figure out who the favoured maid was, Xinyi was not suspected in the least. Such gossip never bothered anyone though.
Xinyi tasted the soup methodologically like she did for the stir fried dishes. The herbs that were directly nourished had the same effect as the stir fried ones. Doing the same as earlier, she gave the one that was nourished daily to BaoBao to finish, while she finished the rest. The results that surprised her were the herbs that were indirectly nourished. When cooked into soup, the rejuvenating effect was multiplied by many folds. It was effective to the point that her body felt cleansed. /This could actually help to speed up one's cultivation/. She wondered in awe to herself. Her mind started reeling with possibilities once more. She wondered about what she could do with this knowledge in this world, how she could use it, whether it would be practical and safe for others to learn of this, and many more. Finally, she arrived at her next experimental question. /If it can have such wonderful effects for the internal body, I wonder
RenRan began napping. A lot. Souls did not need sleep, but they could choose to do so. FanHai was one of those who seemed to never catch a wink of sleep. While RenRan slept, he stayed by her side, always keeping himself busy with something. This carried on for a good time before she began to catch him with his guard lowered after waking up. ‘A while more.’ RenRan did not believe that a man like him could keep himself entertained this long and resist a cat nap with her. At this point, BaoBao cried out in frustration. There were a few times she could have slipped away because he had already fallen asleep with her! He even dared to cuddle with her. That spot was only reserved for two people! Him and the familiar soul! “Is it really too much to assist by waking her up?” He challenged the elder one. “Is it so hard for her to stay awake in a world that doesn’t need sleep?” He challenged BaoBao back. “...That’s easy for you to say.” Then, BaoBao puffed his cheeks and returned to gl
RenRan’s eyes opened wide. No matter how hard she pushed against him or how much she pounded his chest, shoulders, or head, he persisted on. She tried to bite him, but he avoided using his tongue and skillfully moved his mouth in tandem with her attempts. With his hand cupping the back of her head, she could not break the kiss either. She was at his complete mercy. ‘I should have dropped the act earlier. This isn’t worth it!’ Fear slowly gripped her heart as she wondered how far he would take it. Then, he stopped, just as suddenly as he started. “Enough?” He grinned and meaningfully applied greater pressure on her lower back. His move made RenRan conscious of the rock hard member against her abdomen. Immediately recognising what it was, she fiercely pushed against his chest and demanded, “Okay, let me go! I’ll properly spend some time with you first!” He smiled with satisfaction. “Like I thought.” Then, he let her go. “You wouldn’t have to waste so much time and energy if you jus
RenRan’s heart jumped but she poised herself promptly, ready to grapple with whoever had manhandled her. “Why’d you run away from me? Didn't we have deal?” The somewhat familiar deep voice cleared up the situation. “I’m not running from you.” RenRan explained as she attempted to pull her arm out of his strong grip. “You know you can’t lie with this within us.” He pointed at his chest and kept on his tight smile. “You got to try harder than that to convince me.” RenRan frowned. “And I was precisely following that to find you, as agreed.” His smile gradually disappeared as his gaze dropped to study her entire body. “…You’re weaker than the last time I saw you.” RenRan had nothing to say in response. Instead, she attempted to twist her arm free again. “Even so, I’ve never heard of a compass malfunctioning because of this before.” Annoyed with his accusations, RenRan tuned in
RenRan headed for a condensed group of swirling sparkles that was just a little larger than her. ‘So, my mission is to achieve my dream no matter the cost. What’s my dream? To find YingTao? No, I’ll definitely find him. It’s just a matter of time. Then, I’ll find out that YingTao doesn’t want me anymore. And I’ll want him back...’ RenRan thought of everything that had happened in RenRan’s life. ‘I can only hope that her dream’s that simple...’ She began to think of all her misdemeanors, then ways to right her wrongs. [I should stop you right there. If it wasn’t clear enough before, as long as you’re in the story scenes, you’re supposed to do and say all the things the original character did.] ‘What? You didn’t say that earlier.’ [I mentioned earlier that it's risky to provoke this world’s consciousness into doing anything. So, we can only observe this world. What do you think this mea
Luna was right. She had inhabited Luo RenRan’s body. RenRan’s family belonged to the working class, but her gripe was not their standard of living, it was her parents’ favourtism for her brothers. She was the only girl, and she was the oldest. Anything her brothers did, she was responsible for. Any wrong they committed, they were let off with a more lenient punishment, while she was supposed to forgive and forget. Their expectations for her and the restrictions they imposed on her could not be compared to the standards they held her brothers against. The only solace she had was that her siblings never directly crossed her line, even when she was old enough to start working. If only it stayed that way forever. “RenRan... Forgive your brother, okay? You know he only took it because he needed it and only you can help him. If you have someone you need to blame, blame your father.” A gentle motherly voice coaxed her. “If your father helped, none of us would be
“Wh- What am I doing here?” BaoBao looked around in shock. He recognised this place. The last time he was here, it was to defend Luna. “Why am I back here?”The elder one sighed. “Why did you do it?”“D- Do what?”Gasps were heard around him.“It lies.”“It truly deceives.”“Surely, that’s bad.”“This can’t go on.”“It’s always this one system.”“Clearly there’s something wrong with it.”All the administration looked at the elder one, waiting for the go ahead. The elder one looked at BaoBao so intensely as if BaoBao was a specimen under his microscope. BaoBao gulped. He felt exposed. What was with this elder one? Whatever the case, Luna had already been sent to the next world. He could not dilly dall
“Don’t ignore me! I know you’re awake!” Someone pushed Luna’s shoulder hard. Her eyes flew open, and a purple and black galaxy unfolded before her. Her bottom left whatever she had been sitting on, but she did not fall. There was a resistance that made her body glide instead. Luna blinked a few times, stunned. "I dare you to say it again.” The same voice challenged her. Luna turned towards the source. There it was again. The sensation when she moved was familiar. However, she had no time to make sense of it. The deep voice belonged to a burly woman, instead of a man like Luna had assumed, not that it made anything better. Her guest looked as friendly as a starving lioness. Luna straightened her neat celestial-like robes while she quickly collected her thoughts. It shimmered and shone brighter than the glow emanating from her body. The fabric was so silky to touch that it was like water. Although it was transluc
“LUNA!” BaoBao jumped onto her. Luna grunted from the impact. It reminded her of how much he had grown from the first time she met him. ‘How is he so weightless but so heavy at the same time?’ “Hi BaoBao,” she laughed lightly, “Is this your new way of sending me to the next world?” “Huh?! No, no! It’s far too soon to be sending you to the next world, isn’t it?!” Luna laughed even more. “I was just teasing.” BaoBao blinked innocently. “Oh.” Luna looked at him endearingly. “You’re still so much like a kid.” She rubbed the top of his head lovingly. “Don’t systems live for eternity, if nothing goes wrong?” “Mmhm, what about it?” “It still felt that long to you?” “YES!” BaoBao confirmed without a second thought. Luna laughed. “Let’s spend some time together before heading to the next world.” BaoBao’s heart warmed and h
Nozomi closed her eyes and thought hard about his request. It did not feel right or good to take his years, but she had no right to dictate how he should live his life.‘Since he’s really fine with it...’Nozomi pushed her hands forward to cup his cheeks. “Okay...”Hikaru’s eyes brightened up. He promptly retrieved his book and readied himself. Nozomi watched Hikaru activate his magic with interest. The way his book’s ribbon splits and transforms into a robe and staff never got old. “Thank you, for going along with my wishes.” His heartfelt gratitude was reflected in his eyes as well. Nozomi smiled in understanding and squeezed his hands that were once again holding onto hers. Hikaru closed his eyes and focused on her presence, then said the incantation that he had memorised by then.Green glowing vine marks appeared
