"When's the soonest we can leave?" Vanora got straight back to the topic at hand.
"Tomorrow morning. Have a proper rest now. It's getting late and you probably had it rough for a long time, didn't you?"
Vanora held his gaze that was one of sincere concern.
/One moment he's all playful and the next he can be so serious. It's kind of amazing how his emotions can swing from one to the next so quickly./
She looked down at her tea and took another sip before talking. "... You probably had it rough till now too, didn't you?"
Vlad caught on that she subtly confirmed his question. He smiled bitterly when answering her question. "Yeah, it wasn't easy but I don't matter. What happened to you? How and why did you change into a demon?" He sounded so soft and gentle like he was trying to coax a wild animal out of its home. His fingers lightly touched her hand that was still holding onto her cup.
She very calmly withdrew her hand and placed it on her lap before replying in a dry tone. "I was collateral damage of a fierce battle between an angel and a demon. That demon's consciousness was still intact and it communicated with me to eat his meat and drink his blood, and I did."
Anger bubbled up within him but relief cooled it down almost instantly. It was complicated but it surfaced on his face as only a frown. He hated that the demon made her undergo a transformation that risked her life, but he knew that it was what gave her a chance to survive and meet him. /Now that I'm here, any demon that threatens her life is a goner./ He made a silent oath.
Meanwhile, Vanora continued talking in the same dry tone. "So here I am learning to be a demon. Talking about that, how exactly do I start seeing the colours of a person's emotions? All I see now are still transparent wisps that looks like smoke."
Vlad's shoulders sagged imperceptibly. He knew that that was not all there is to her story and that she was deliberately changing topics. /I'll just wait for her to be ready to open up.../
"Just think of wanting to know how I feel. It's as simple as that. If you don't see colours, you're just still adapting to your new powers."
"What about absorbing it?"
"Just think of wanting to consume it too. Intuitive, right?"
"It is." /So it's all about diligence and time now.../
Vanora wasted no time and wondered about Vlad's emotions. As easy as it sounded, the colours did not appear just like that. She felt a little strain in her eyes as if it was adjusting itself to be able to see something that was supposedly imperceptible.
Her brows gradually knitted together and her eyes turned redder by the second without her awareness. Vlad could easily tell what she was doing.
After a minute passed, the pain in her eyes grew intense but she could finally see the wisps taking on a very faint hue. /Just a little more!/ She gritted so hard that her teeth began to hurt too. Just then, everything turned dark and she felt the warmth of someone's hand against her eyes. "Don't rush. Don't push yourself so hard. You'd only hurt yourself. You have time so go at your own pace."
His stern voice conveyed his worry and anxiety.
/Unfortunately, I do not have the time like you think./ Vanora thought to herself but nodded anyway.
Vlad removed his hand slowly and Vanora blinked away the sudden brightness that filled her vision. When she looked fine again, Vlad asked, "Ready to turn in for the night yet?"
/Already? There must be something else I can do./
Although Vanora had not said it out loud, Vlad could tell what she thought. She fidgeted and looked so uncomfortable with the idea of turning in so early. He sighed helplessly then gave a wry smile. "How about I tell you about the colour of emotions that you could absorb?"
"Sure." Vanora listened with rapt attention.
"You can absorb almost any shade of red. From an orange-red shade to the darkest shade of red. The only shade that does not belong to you is crimson red which represents sexual desire. That's for demons of lust to feast on."
"Since you're a demon of no particular sin, do you not feed on any or do you feed on all kinds?"
"I feed on all kinds."
"How exactly did you become such a demon?" Vanora was curious about the backstory of such an overpowered character. It was not documented in the world book.
His smile turned dark and bitter as he seemed to recall a painful past. "Due to certain circumstances, I ate strong demons of each sin."
Vanora's eyes lit up like she got a brilliant idea.
Vlad's smile dropped and he told her sternly, "DON'T be getting any funny ideas now. It's a wonder how I survived it. Any normal demon would have died from the pain and suffering you'd have to go through, much less a normal person."
"Oh..." /I guess this is part of how the world fills in the missing details of the book./
"Don't worry about not being strong enough. I promise to protect you always. No matter who or what threatens you." He smiled gently while he tousled her hair.
Vanora rubbed her nose lightly while she retorted in a soft voice, "I don't need to be protected."
He grinned in satisfaction. "Of course, I know you'll keep working your ass off and that you'll only grow stronger over time. Now, you've just become a demon, learnt a lot, fought with me, and then learnt some more. You've done plenty for today. Can you please sleep now?"
Vanora pursed her lips. Although he had just showered her with compliments, she did not feel good about it at all. It sounded more like he was placating a small willful child. "Yeah..."
They headed to the bedroom together, but Vanora stopped at the doorway. She scanned the entire room but could find only one giant bed on a very low bed frame. It was big enough to fit five people. The only other furniture in the room were a large wardrobe, and a large desk with a comfy arm chair. This was not a space for two people to live in. At least, not for two people with the current relationship she shared with Vlad.
Vlad turned back and noticed that she did not show any intention of stepping in. "What's wrong?"
"You take the bed, I'll take the floor."
"You really think I'll let you do that? We'll sleep on the bed together."
[He didn't even have the decency to offer to take the floor?!] BaoBao exclaimed.
/He's a demon. And the strongest Lord here. He can and will do whatever he wants as long as he feels like it and no one will have an issue with it. There would be no other reason why he'd hound Angela like he did in the book./
Vanora ignored him and turned back to the main room with the intention to sleep on the cushions they were sitting on earlier. However, Vlad held onto her wrist firmly. "Please! I- I..." His voice dropped to a whisper. He dropped his gaze to the floor. "I can't even remember when was the last time I had a good sleep. But earlier in the day when I was with you... I fell so soundly asleep that I didn't notice you leaving my side. I feel like it may have to do with you. So... Please."
Vanora silently stared at him and felt her heart squeeze a tiny little bit. The great demon lord was currently looking so pitiful, despondent, and vulnerable in front of her. Moreover, he did not demand for her obedience. He asked her nicely. She began reconsidering their sleeping arrangement.
Vlad felt her gaze burrow into him once again. He fidgeted uncomfortably, then peeked and looked at her with puppy dog eyes. "I promise not to do anything to you."
/If I go along with this, I won't be indebted to yet another person. At least I can do something for him, unlike how it was for LongFei./
"Fine." She finally replied.
His face brightened like the sun. He dashed off to the left side of the bed to fluff the pillow then pulled aside the blanket for her. Vanora raised an eyebrow then walked to the right side of the bed to do everything by herself. She got into bed and closed her eyes. /BaoBao, wake me up if he tries anything funny./
[I will!]
Vlad's shoulders sagged when she cold-heartedly rejected his intentions but his spirits quickly rose again after she laid on the bed. He got on the bed the same time as her and laid on his left side so that he would be facing her. Even though she kept her back towards him, Vlad felt more than happy with the current arrangement.
Vlad stared at her for a long while, deep in thought. He recalled the scene when he saw her eyes turning red from the strain she was putting it through.
When he realised that she was not letting up despite the strain on her eyes, he checked in with her emotions. What he saw confounded him. Her aura was still red with black swirls in it but it was now so faint and dim. This told him that it was controlled and suppressed. Even so, she did not stop trying. He knew then that it was not a desperate or emotional attempt at becoming stronger, but a mindless pursuit.
He felt an inexplicable sadness. /If this was the way she had been living her life, she had been living life very recklessly. Her body could have given up on her and broken down anytime. Does she not care about herself? Why does she treat herself so carelessly?/
On the other hand, Vanora was still wide awake and aware that he was staring hard at her back. /What's he doing? Wasn't his purpose to sleep?/ She decided not to care about him any longer and have an earlier night so that she could start her day earlier.
When Vlad saw that her breathing became slow and steady, he inched closer to her, careful not to shake the bed too much. When he was about an arm's length away from her, he grabbed onto the hem of her top and sighed in relief. A black rose appeared on the back of his palm and he fell asleep soon after.
While the two slept peacefully, BaoBao was left confused and puzzled by Vlad's actions. He had been alarmed when Vlad moved closer to Vanora. He was ready to wake her up before Vlad could touch her. Then, seeing Vlad fall right asleep after holding onto the hem of her shirt completely stumped him. [What just happened?]
Unfortunately, BaoBao could only wait till the next morning before he could get any answers.
Vanora yawned and opened her eyes to find the sky outside the little window close to the ceiling as dark as ever. There was nothing in the room that helped to keep track of time so she had no idea how long she has slept for.
/How do they live with no sense of time?/
[You've slept for around 8 hours.] BaoBao diligently relayed to her.
/... That's quite long./
[Perhaps your body was indeed worn out after everything that happened?]
She pushed herself up and swung her legs over to get off the bed but felt her shirt pulled by something. She looked back to identify the source of her inconvenience. Her heart did a little somersault to find him much closer to her than she last remembered.
The sight of him holding onto her like this while he peacefully slept led to a short flashback. When they were younger, Erica would often hold onto the hem of her shirt wherever they went. Whenever Erica slept together with her because she was scared of the dark, this was exactly how Erica would hold onto her too.
Vanora stared at him helplessly and her heart warmed. /Just like a scared child.../
[Scared? What does being scared have to do with this?]
/I suppose it gives people some sense of security that there's someone there, that they're not alone./
[I see... So seemingly meaningless actions do have some purpose.]
[Ah! Should I have warned you? I just assumed that it'd be alright since he was just getting close to you and not touching you or do you mind that as well?] BaoBao rattled on in his fear that he made the wrong judgement. /He didn't do anything to me, did he?/ [Nope!] /Then it's fine./ She reassured BaoBao while she tried to pry her shirt out of his hand. [Erm... But he DID do something to himself... I think.] /What did he do?/ Vanora absentmindedly questioned while she struggled to get her shirt out of his hand. Having done the same thing with Erica for so many times before, she felt odd for experiencing so much difficulty with it this time round. [The mark of a black rose appeared at the back of his hand.] Vanora turned his hand over and saw nothing but flawless skin. /Don't tell me.../ She gradually used greater force to y
"Hope you like this." He said while placing the plate of blue rare meat drizzled in some kind of red sauce in front of her. Although the red made the dish look terribly raw, it smelt and looked appetizing. Her stomach finally growled with hunger she did not know she was suffering from. The desire to hunt for much more arose within her. /I see... I would only know when I'm craving for meat when I'm around prey. ... That'd be too late./ She stared at the generous serving on her plate then looked at him. "Do you not need to eat?" "I'll eat whenever I feel like it. I do not suffer the same dependency on food like other demons." "I see." Vanora returned her attention to her meal then cut off a chunk of meat. The moment the flavour and taste hit her, her eyes lit up a little and a sound of pleasant surprise escaped her. "Mm!" She could tell that he gave her something of premium quality yet again. It tasted so good that she worried if she would no l
The next space was a lot smaller. The air smelt so rancid that it was slightly nauseating. Vanora frowned slightly. The area seemed empty. She could not sense anything hiding in the dark above or in the corners. /In that case, I can only trigger something to happen./ She carefully placed her foot on the ground beyond the tunnel. Her foot sunk in a little, like she was stepping on mud. /Is this like quicksand, a place filled with booby traps, or is something underground?/ She continued to exert pressure on the ground, eventually placing her full weight on that one foot. It stopped sinking in after her foot was half submerged in the soft ground. Slowly, she took another step forward. Then, another. With calculated movement, she gradually made her way to the other side. Suddenly, blood spurted out of legs. Several fresh scratches appeared before she knew it. She could not see what happened, much less react to it. She immediately stopped moving,
Vlad returned to find Vanora already in bed. He could tell that she was still awake. He sat on the edge of the bed on the other side and dried his hair. "You know... Seeing you train and practice so diligently today is really refreshing." He spoke in a soft voice, trying to strike up a conversation. Although she did not reply, he continued unfazed. "Do you plan to do the same tomorrow?" He heard a soft sigh then the rustle of her hair against the pillow. "Exactly the same?" Vanora nodded again. His eyes rounded in surprise and he turned to look at her back. "Have you always followed such a strict routine?" Vanora recalled the original soul's past and realised that they were about the same in this aspect. So, she nodded again. "But you're a demon now. Your lifespan's much longer than a human's. You have many many years to grow stronger. Why do you still work so hard?" Vanora understood where he was coming from. It was pr
Two weeks passed by in a blink of an eye. She fought with several kinds of hell beings. Some resembled demonified or zombified animals. Some looked completely out of the world. The ones that challenged her the most were the ones that had a humanoid form. Its intelligence tended to be higher, so it was trickier to deal with. She could not win with a straightforward attack. While she did eventually get used to triggering her enhanced instinct to escape unscathed each time, there was something telling her that this difficulty was not enough. Asking Vlad for more difficult opponents did not change a thing. She was never put in a dire situation where she could really lose her life. Would real battles be this easy? Somehow, she doubted it. She began to look at Vlad with a growing suspicion. However, Vlad remained obtuse. He was used to Vanora being grumpy, so he did not realise that he had become the object of scrutiny. His aura was currently a light and clea
With Vlad consistently stepping in her path, she knew that it was impossible to walk on, so she stopped. However, she continued to avoid his eye contact by turning her head to the side and keeping her eyes on the ground. "Tell me what're you upset with. I'll help." /Help?/ [Uh oh.] Vanora was already barely keeping it together. Her anxiety, frustration, anger, and other negative emotions that she had kept bottled up until earlier, burst forth again. Her lips and eyes twitched in her effort to stomp it back down, otherwise she would explod at Vlad. However, a sudden random thought flashed in her mind. /Let it go. Fight him./ Her mind became a blank after that. It was as if she had arrived at the answer to all her problems. She suddenly turned to face Vlad properly, surprising him as the golden specks in her eyes burned brightly. "You'll help?" She laughed sarcastically for a short while, then scoffed,
When Vanora woke up the next morning, BaoBao immediately informed how much time had passed. /I slept for eight hours?/ She groaned inwardly. She did not like sleeping for that long. So, she immediately pushed herself off the bed. However, her body protested. /It doesn't feel like I slept for long though.../ While half of her wanted to get on with her day, the other half just wanted to curl up in a ball in the bed. She closed her eyes and took a few deep breaths to compose herself and get back her motivation and determination to carry on. /Let's just get it over and done with. The day will be over before I know it./ Once ready, she woke Vlad for him to let go of her shirt. They went through their usual morning routine, with Vlad trying to strike up a conversation as well. This time, however, Vanora was colder and more detached than usual. Vlad assumed that she was still upset with him, so he decided to give her space. Having learnt f
They followed any sounds of battle and encountered a few stray fights in this manner. They were all small fights, consisting only of one or two angels and a few more hell beings. Each time Vanora joined in the fray, Vlad commanded the hell beings to assist in some other fight elsewhere. The angels proved to be no challenge. Vanora was still at her peak performance, while the angels lacked talent and experience. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the pair encountered their largest fight. Five angels hovered in the sky, above the hell beings that Vanora recognised as the ones that got sent away by Vlad. However, every one of them were now glowing white. The two angels that bore weapons and wore colder expressions dominated the fight. The one with a gold lance fought perfectly in sync with the one with a bow. White sparkling arrows that disappeared upon impact rained on the hell beings, causing more chaos among them. Vanora instinctively knew that these two were of a differen
RenRan began napping. A lot. Souls did not need sleep, but they could choose to do so. FanHai was one of those who seemed to never catch a wink of sleep. While RenRan slept, he stayed by her side, always keeping himself busy with something. This carried on for a good time before she began to catch him with his guard lowered after waking up. ‘A while more.’ RenRan did not believe that a man like him could keep himself entertained this long and resist a cat nap with her. At this point, BaoBao cried out in frustration. There were a few times she could have slipped away because he had already fallen asleep with her! He even dared to cuddle with her. That spot was only reserved for two people! Him and the familiar soul! “Is it really too much to assist by waking her up?” He challenged the elder one. “Is it so hard for her to stay awake in a world that doesn’t need sleep?” He challenged BaoBao back. “...That’s easy for you to say.” Then, BaoBao puffed his cheeks and returned to gl
RenRan’s eyes opened wide. No matter how hard she pushed against him or how much she pounded his chest, shoulders, or head, he persisted on. She tried to bite him, but he avoided using his tongue and skillfully moved his mouth in tandem with her attempts. With his hand cupping the back of her head, she could not break the kiss either. She was at his complete mercy. ‘I should have dropped the act earlier. This isn’t worth it!’ Fear slowly gripped her heart as she wondered how far he would take it. Then, he stopped, just as suddenly as he started. “Enough?” He grinned and meaningfully applied greater pressure on her lower back. His move made RenRan conscious of the rock hard member against her abdomen. Immediately recognising what it was, she fiercely pushed against his chest and demanded, “Okay, let me go! I’ll properly spend some time with you first!” He smiled with satisfaction. “Like I thought.” Then, he let her go. “You wouldn’t have to waste so much time and energy if you jus
RenRan’s heart jumped but she poised herself promptly, ready to grapple with whoever had manhandled her. “Why’d you run away from me? Didn't we have deal?” The somewhat familiar deep voice cleared up the situation. “I’m not running from you.” RenRan explained as she attempted to pull her arm out of his strong grip. “You know you can’t lie with this within us.” He pointed at his chest and kept on his tight smile. “You got to try harder than that to convince me.” RenRan frowned. “And I was precisely following that to find you, as agreed.” His smile gradually disappeared as his gaze dropped to study her entire body. “…You’re weaker than the last time I saw you.” RenRan had nothing to say in response. Instead, she attempted to twist her arm free again. “Even so, I’ve never heard of a compass malfunctioning because of this before.” Annoyed with his accusations, RenRan tuned in
RenRan headed for a condensed group of swirling sparkles that was just a little larger than her. ‘So, my mission is to achieve my dream no matter the cost. What’s my dream? To find YingTao? No, I’ll definitely find him. It’s just a matter of time. Then, I’ll find out that YingTao doesn’t want me anymore. And I’ll want him back...’ RenRan thought of everything that had happened in RenRan’s life. ‘I can only hope that her dream’s that simple...’ She began to think of all her misdemeanors, then ways to right her wrongs. [I should stop you right there. If it wasn’t clear enough before, as long as you’re in the story scenes, you’re supposed to do and say all the things the original character did.] ‘What? You didn’t say that earlier.’ [I mentioned earlier that it's risky to provoke this world’s consciousness into doing anything. So, we can only observe this world. What do you think this mea
Luna was right. She had inhabited Luo RenRan’s body. RenRan’s family belonged to the working class, but her gripe was not their standard of living, it was her parents’ favourtism for her brothers. She was the only girl, and she was the oldest. Anything her brothers did, she was responsible for. Any wrong they committed, they were let off with a more lenient punishment, while she was supposed to forgive and forget. Their expectations for her and the restrictions they imposed on her could not be compared to the standards they held her brothers against. The only solace she had was that her siblings never directly crossed her line, even when she was old enough to start working. If only it stayed that way forever. “RenRan... Forgive your brother, okay? You know he only took it because he needed it and only you can help him. If you have someone you need to blame, blame your father.” A gentle motherly voice coaxed her. “If your father helped, none of us would be
“Wh- What am I doing here?” BaoBao looked around in shock. He recognised this place. The last time he was here, it was to defend Luna. “Why am I back here?”The elder one sighed. “Why did you do it?”“D- Do what?”Gasps were heard around him.“It lies.”“It truly deceives.”“Surely, that’s bad.”“This can’t go on.”“It’s always this one system.”“Clearly there’s something wrong with it.”All the administration looked at the elder one, waiting for the go ahead. The elder one looked at BaoBao so intensely as if BaoBao was a specimen under his microscope. BaoBao gulped. He felt exposed. What was with this elder one? Whatever the case, Luna had already been sent to the next world. He could not dilly dall
“Don’t ignore me! I know you’re awake!” Someone pushed Luna’s shoulder hard. Her eyes flew open, and a purple and black galaxy unfolded before her. Her bottom left whatever she had been sitting on, but she did not fall. There was a resistance that made her body glide instead. Luna blinked a few times, stunned. "I dare you to say it again.” The same voice challenged her. Luna turned towards the source. There it was again. The sensation when she moved was familiar. However, she had no time to make sense of it. The deep voice belonged to a burly woman, instead of a man like Luna had assumed, not that it made anything better. Her guest looked as friendly as a starving lioness. Luna straightened her neat celestial-like robes while she quickly collected her thoughts. It shimmered and shone brighter than the glow emanating from her body. The fabric was so silky to touch that it was like water. Although it was transluc
“LUNA!” BaoBao jumped onto her. Luna grunted from the impact. It reminded her of how much he had grown from the first time she met him. ‘How is he so weightless but so heavy at the same time?’ “Hi BaoBao,” she laughed lightly, “Is this your new way of sending me to the next world?” “Huh?! No, no! It’s far too soon to be sending you to the next world, isn’t it?!” Luna laughed even more. “I was just teasing.” BaoBao blinked innocently. “Oh.” Luna looked at him endearingly. “You’re still so much like a kid.” She rubbed the top of his head lovingly. “Don’t systems live for eternity, if nothing goes wrong?” “Mmhm, what about it?” “It still felt that long to you?” “YES!” BaoBao confirmed without a second thought. Luna laughed. “Let’s spend some time together before heading to the next world.” BaoBao’s heart warmed and h
Nozomi closed her eyes and thought hard about his request. It did not feel right or good to take his years, but she had no right to dictate how he should live his life.‘Since he’s really fine with it...’Nozomi pushed her hands forward to cup his cheeks. “Okay...”Hikaru’s eyes brightened up. He promptly retrieved his book and readied himself. Nozomi watched Hikaru activate his magic with interest. The way his book’s ribbon splits and transforms into a robe and staff never got old. “Thank you, for going along with my wishes.” His heartfelt gratitude was reflected in his eyes as well. Nozomi smiled in understanding and squeezed his hands that were once again holding onto hers. Hikaru closed his eyes and focused on her presence, then said the incantation that he had memorised by then.Green glowing vine marks appeared
