Vlad returned to find Vanora already in bed. He could tell that she was still awake. He sat on the edge of the bed on the other side and dried his hair. "You know... Seeing you train and practice so diligently today is really refreshing." He spoke in a soft voice, trying to strike up a conversation.
Although she did not reply, he continued unfazed. "Do you plan to do the same tomorrow?"
He heard a soft sigh then the rustle of her hair against the pillow.
"Exactly the same?"
Vanora nodded again.
His eyes rounded in surprise and he turned to look at her back. "Have you always followed such a strict routine?"
Vanora recalled the original soul's past and realised that they were about the same in this aspect. So, she nodded again.
"But you're a demon now. Your lifespan's much longer than a human's. You have many many years to grow stronger. Why do you still work so hard?"
Vanora understood where he was coming from. It was probably unheard of to see a demon like her. However, she could not explain her situation to Vlad, so she simply shrugged.
Vlad took it as a sign that she was still not willing to open up to him, so he ceased his questioning. At the same time, Vanora finally had enough of feeling so restless. She had tried to sleep early so that she could get up earlier, but she just could not fall asleep. Her mind involuntarily filled with ways she could have spent the day more productively and the consequences of her idling. /What if what I could have accomplished today would be crucial in saving myself in the future?/
Deciding that she just had to accomplish something, no matter how little, she got off the bed and faced Vlad.
"Can you bring me to the place I practiced in the morning?"
"What's wrong?"
"I didn't practice enough today. I need to do more."
"But you're already all cleaned up and ready for bed."
"I know, but I can't sleep anyway." She said with a small frown.
Vlad finally sighed. "You will do much more, but tomorrow."
She pursed her lips as she remained unconvinced. /What if tomorrow will be the same as today?/
"I promise to find more hell beings of the right difficulty tomorrow, but ONLY if I'm convinced that you're well-rested. Okay?" He sounded gentle yet firm, like a parent coaxing a small child.
Vanora's expression fell flat. /He IS treating me like a child./
[Well... In terms of how long you've been a demon as compared to him, you're indeed a baby demon. Maybe he really sees you as one?]
/Somehow I don't think that's it./
"Sleep. Go." He gently ushered her to the bed.
The way he said it gave her a strong sense of deja vu. /Doesn't he sound like.../
[LongFei! LongFei said these exact words in the previous world!]
/What a coincidence.../
While Vanora was distracted, Vlad managed to tuck her back into bed. Before she knew it, he was already pulling the blanket up to her shoulders. He sat on the edge of the bed and stroked her cheek with the back of his four fingers. His gesture brought her full attention back to the present. "Relax and rest well." He said with a soft smile on his face.
Her eyes grew slightly wider and she felt a little squeeze in her heart. She hastily muttered, "You too." Then, she turned her back on him and closed her eyes. However, Vlad did not leave. He continued to stay by her side and stroke her head. Vanora's hand that was hidden under the blanket gripped onto the bed sheet so tightly that her knuckles turned white.
/Why? Why must he have such similar mannerisms to LongFei?/
Vlad's actions caused her to be filled with nostalgia. She suddenly realised how much she had grown accustomed to LongFei's presence without her knowing it. She appreciated LongFei's quiet obedience and assistance. This in turn brought back memories of being with her family, the people who always showered her with unconditional love and affection. No matter how undeserving or unworthy she was, they were there. Before she felt much more, Vanora mentally stomped her feelings back down until she was numb again. /I can't go back. I shouldn't go back./
Her self-talk got BaoBao confused as he only shared her thoughts, not her emotions. So, he remained blissfully unaware of Vanora's momentary emotional turmoil.
[But you CAN go back. Why shouldn't you? So, you do wish to return to the previous world, don't you?]
/What? No, how did you get that idea?/
[Wasn't that what you said? If all that's holding you back is-]
/Forget that./
[Huh?]
/Forget everything I said. It's nothing. I'm going to sleep now. Goodnight./
BaoBao stopped talking as Vanora wished. He knew by now, to not push Vanora when it came to her feelings. He could only take one step at a time. As hard as Vanora tried, she only fell asleep after a long, long while.
While Vanora slept peacefully, a tall and slim woman with sky blue hair that reached her waist appeared in the dungeon that Vanora had fought in for the day.
The flying creatures in the first large space dove downwards in perfect synchronization, then prostrated themselves before her. The woman's cold sapphire eyes scanned each and every creature. They trembled under her gaze, as if her gaze could literally touch them. "You've kept your end of the deal. You get to live." The woman smiled beautifully but her eyes looked eerily empty. She waved her hand once and the hell beings faded from sight. Then, she moved on to the other arenas with her black cape fluttering dramatically behind her.
She left the worms for the last. When she finally appeared in the worms' cave, it was the only one that did not greet her like the others. Her expression turned even uglier. "Knowing that you've done wrong, you do not dare to appear before me?" Her cold voice was low and carried deadly intent.
After a short silence, the ground shook like there was an earthquake. An inhuman sharp squeal of pain rang out. Eventually, a gigantic worm that was several times larger than the woman surfaced from the ground.
"I told you. Listen to me or die. There's no escaping this place unless I allow you to."
"I knew it. You- You aren't Raven. You're-"
"How arrogant, letting your little ones do whatever they want." The woman continued speaking as if she did not get interrupted by the giant hairy worm. "Looks like I have to put you in your place."
"I apologise! I apologise!"
However, the woman smiled mockingly in response. One moment, she was in the tunnel. The next, she was on the writhing worm's body, with her nails digging into its fatty flesh. Before the worm could get another apology out, she bit down. The worm screeched so loudly that the cave tremored and rocks tumbled down. However, the woman did not let go. It looked strange to anyone not involved in the fight. There was no visible damage being done to the worm and it looked no different. However, its struggle gradually became weaker and weaker. The woman only released her bite once the worm laid still on the ground. She smirked and wiped her mouth with the back of her hand. "Delicious. You must have been well-fed before I brought you here." She coldly glanced around. The rocks were already reduced to the same muddy substance that made up the ground. "Let's see how you can communicate with your little ones now that you're dead."
She kicked it with just enough force to trigger the tiny worms hiding in the ground. Countless tiny worms shot up and many entered their mother's dead body. In a short amount of time, there was nothing left of the giant worm. The woman did not stay behind to watch it. There was no need to. She intended to abandon the worms there and let them starve to death.
When Vanora opened her eyes again, BaoBao proactively informed her that she had slept for only six hours this time. It was a very early start to her day. She looked outside the windows that were near the ceiling. The sky was still as pitch black as it had ever been. /I wonder when I'll get used to this./
She got up only to find her shirt being held on to tightly again. /This too./
She lightly tapped his hand. Vlad opened his eyes groggily after a few taps. "You're already awake?" His voice was extremely husky. Vanora admitted that it sounded very seductive and alluring.
"Yes. Is this too early for you?"
Vlad remained lying in bed while he released the curse he put on his hand. "I'm fine. But are you sure you're well rested?"
/Is it just me or does he look more tired than yesterday?/
[Maybe it's because he got far less sleep than he had yesterday. After you slept, he disappeared for quite a while, cleaned himself up again, THEN slept.]
/He left for that long?/
Vanora silently stared at Vlad, while she debated with herself whether she should sleep longer so that he could too. In the meantime, Vlad lounged in bed and happily stared back at her with half-lidded eyes.
/I have no time. The strongest demon lord should be fine with a little sleep deprivation./ Having concluded her mental debate, she replied Vlad. "I've rested enough." She got up and made her way to the bathroom. "If you're tired, you can sleep while I practice."
"That's impossible."
She stopped at the bedroom door. "Why not? You need a comfy bed to sleep?"
"No. Something may happen to you while I'm asleep." He said it so seriously that she did not bother to argue with him.
"Seriously. What's with your paranoia?" She left him alone with that comment. Not that he could give her an answer even if she waited for one. Vlad did not understand where his fears stemmed from either. He just knew that such thoughts uncontrollably flooded his mind and kept him on his toes. If he ignored them and forcibly went to sleep, he may end up dreaming of frightening images yet again.
The day progressed smoother than the previous one.
The black dress that Vanora received was a lot easier to fight in. It was sleeveless and hugged her figure before falling loosely around her waist. It was paired with black tights. Whereas Vlad was in his usual suit, just of a different colour.
The hell beings she fought were as promised. They were tougher to deal with. Their attacks and movements were less predictable. At times, she was placed in a situation tight enough to activate her enhanced instinct. However, she still felt a little uneasy. She finished the day feeling just a little worn out and practically unscathed. It was too... Comfortable. It was nothing compared to what she faced in all the previous worlds she had transmigrated into. She definitely learned something from this day, but was this pace good enough?
/I guess I'll give it some time and see what happens.../
Two weeks passed by in a blink of an eye. She fought with several kinds of hell beings. Some resembled demonified or zombified animals. Some looked completely out of the world. The ones that challenged her the most were the ones that had a humanoid form. Its intelligence tended to be higher, so it was trickier to deal with. She could not win with a straightforward attack. While she did eventually get used to triggering her enhanced instinct to escape unscathed each time, there was something telling her that this difficulty was not enough. Asking Vlad for more difficult opponents did not change a thing. She was never put in a dire situation where she could really lose her life. Would real battles be this easy? Somehow, she doubted it. She began to look at Vlad with a growing suspicion. However, Vlad remained obtuse. He was used to Vanora being grumpy, so he did not realise that he had become the object of scrutiny. His aura was currently a light and clea
With Vlad consistently stepping in her path, she knew that it was impossible to walk on, so she stopped. However, she continued to avoid his eye contact by turning her head to the side and keeping her eyes on the ground. "Tell me what're you upset with. I'll help." /Help?/ [Uh oh.] Vanora was already barely keeping it together. Her anxiety, frustration, anger, and other negative emotions that she had kept bottled up until earlier, burst forth again. Her lips and eyes twitched in her effort to stomp it back down, otherwise she would explod at Vlad. However, a sudden random thought flashed in her mind. /Let it go. Fight him./ Her mind became a blank after that. It was as if she had arrived at the answer to all her problems. She suddenly turned to face Vlad properly, surprising him as the golden specks in her eyes burned brightly. "You'll help?" She laughed sarcastically for a short while, then scoffed,
When Vanora woke up the next morning, BaoBao immediately informed how much time had passed. /I slept for eight hours?/ She groaned inwardly. She did not like sleeping for that long. So, she immediately pushed herself off the bed. However, her body protested. /It doesn't feel like I slept for long though.../ While half of her wanted to get on with her day, the other half just wanted to curl up in a ball in the bed. She closed her eyes and took a few deep breaths to compose herself and get back her motivation and determination to carry on. /Let's just get it over and done with. The day will be over before I know it./ Once ready, she woke Vlad for him to let go of her shirt. They went through their usual morning routine, with Vlad trying to strike up a conversation as well. This time, however, Vanora was colder and more detached than usual. Vlad assumed that she was still upset with him, so he decided to give her space. Having learnt f
They followed any sounds of battle and encountered a few stray fights in this manner. They were all small fights, consisting only of one or two angels and a few more hell beings. Each time Vanora joined in the fray, Vlad commanded the hell beings to assist in some other fight elsewhere. The angels proved to be no challenge. Vanora was still at her peak performance, while the angels lacked talent and experience. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the pair encountered their largest fight. Five angels hovered in the sky, above the hell beings that Vanora recognised as the ones that got sent away by Vlad. However, every one of them were now glowing white. The two angels that bore weapons and wore colder expressions dominated the fight. The one with a gold lance fought perfectly in sync with the one with a bow. White sparkling arrows that disappeared upon impact rained on the hell beings, causing more chaos among them. Vanora instinctively knew that these two were of a differen
Vlad quietly did what he could to try and make it more comfortable for Vanora. The angels were only good for one other thing besides being food. Nothing could beat the soft and silky texture of their feathers. He mercilessly harvested the feathers at top speed and gathered them beside Vanora. He then took off his blazer and shirt to lay them over the feathers, so that the bloodied ones would not dirty Vanora further. Without checking with her nor asking her, he gently picked her up then laid her down on the makeshift bed. Vanora was still awake but she did not feel like responding. She felt completely drained inside and out, yet restless at the same time. It was a torture to be in the limbo like this. She very subtly rubbed her fingertips against Vlad's blazer, trying to focus on how it felt and empty her mind of everything else. Otherwise, she would not be able to fall asleep. However, it was a lot harder than normal. This was what she feared about being honest with her fee
To the angel's horror, Vanora did not dodge like he had expected her to. His slashes had covered every path she could take, but it was the weakest in the path that she chose, which was to fearlessly continue heading towards him. Her flesh got cut up. Some chunks flew off. Some hung off like an open flap. Her right hand was like a claw going straight for his heart. He jammed his swords straight towards her. It was a final, straightforward, and desperate attempt to at least take her down with him. Vanora let herself be stabbed. One went through her chest. The other went through her right arm. In return, she grabbed onto his arms. Before anyone could blink, his arms got tossed to the floor. His cry of pain filled the air. Before he could fly away, Vanora caught the bottom of his robes, then flung him to the ground. The impact broke several bones. The initial pain and shock momentarily paralyzed him. He helplessly watched Vanora comfortably land in front of him.
The next day, Vlad led everyone to flank the army of angels fighting in the main battlefield. Now that Vanora regained her sanity, he trusted her to cooperate and survive on the main battlefield. The element of surprise gave the hell beings a temporary advantage. Everyone, except Vlad, went all out. Amidst the huge fierce battle going on all around him, Vlad focused more on ensuring that Vanora was always fighting with no more than three warrior angels at once. Whenever she fought against the stronger ones, he occupied any other being that wanted to interfere, no matter if they were angel or not. The pair's teamwork was almost impeccable, but Vanora knew that the credit belonged to Vlad. Eventually, the land lost to the angels got reclaimed. Nature withered and died, humans turned more and more bitter, and the land was devastated. The hell beings continued to advance. Everyday, Vlad made sure that Vanora ate a full meal before he teleported them to the surface. When
Vlad teleported himself away, but he did not escape unscathed. His clothes were in tatters. Deep wounds littered his body. However, he stayed among the treetop and looked down at Michael with a smirk, looking completely unbothered by his state. It was as if the battle was already concluded with him being announced as the victor. Michael used his sword as support and pushed himself off the ground very slowly. He was clearly drained of strength. Although he looked up at where Vlad was, there was a glazed over look in his eyes, like he was only half conscious. "Humph. You're still not dead." Vlad sounded a tad bit impressed. "You're either the strongest or one of the strongest already. Then let's see how you survive this!" Vlad multiplied himself again then had all his copies bear down on Michael at the same time. Despite his spacey look, Michael squeezed the handle of his sword just before the first attack could land. The same rugged light streaks shot up
RenRan began napping. A lot. Souls did not need sleep, but they could choose to do so. FanHai was one of those who seemed to never catch a wink of sleep. While RenRan slept, he stayed by her side, always keeping himself busy with something. This carried on for a good time before she began to catch him with his guard lowered after waking up. ‘A while more.’ RenRan did not believe that a man like him could keep himself entertained this long and resist a cat nap with her. At this point, BaoBao cried out in frustration. There were a few times she could have slipped away because he had already fallen asleep with her! He even dared to cuddle with her. That spot was only reserved for two people! Him and the familiar soul! “Is it really too much to assist by waking her up?” He challenged the elder one. “Is it so hard for her to stay awake in a world that doesn’t need sleep?” He challenged BaoBao back. “...That’s easy for you to say.” Then, BaoBao puffed his cheeks and returned to gl
RenRan’s eyes opened wide. No matter how hard she pushed against him or how much she pounded his chest, shoulders, or head, he persisted on. She tried to bite him, but he avoided using his tongue and skillfully moved his mouth in tandem with her attempts. With his hand cupping the back of her head, she could not break the kiss either. She was at his complete mercy. ‘I should have dropped the act earlier. This isn’t worth it!’ Fear slowly gripped her heart as she wondered how far he would take it. Then, he stopped, just as suddenly as he started. “Enough?” He grinned and meaningfully applied greater pressure on her lower back. His move made RenRan conscious of the rock hard member against her abdomen. Immediately recognising what it was, she fiercely pushed against his chest and demanded, “Okay, let me go! I’ll properly spend some time with you first!” He smiled with satisfaction. “Like I thought.” Then, he let her go. “You wouldn’t have to waste so much time and energy if you jus
RenRan’s heart jumped but she poised herself promptly, ready to grapple with whoever had manhandled her. “Why’d you run away from me? Didn't we have deal?” The somewhat familiar deep voice cleared up the situation. “I’m not running from you.” RenRan explained as she attempted to pull her arm out of his strong grip. “You know you can’t lie with this within us.” He pointed at his chest and kept on his tight smile. “You got to try harder than that to convince me.” RenRan frowned. “And I was precisely following that to find you, as agreed.” His smile gradually disappeared as his gaze dropped to study her entire body. “…You’re weaker than the last time I saw you.” RenRan had nothing to say in response. Instead, she attempted to twist her arm free again. “Even so, I’ve never heard of a compass malfunctioning because of this before.” Annoyed with his accusations, RenRan tuned in
RenRan headed for a condensed group of swirling sparkles that was just a little larger than her. ‘So, my mission is to achieve my dream no matter the cost. What’s my dream? To find YingTao? No, I’ll definitely find him. It’s just a matter of time. Then, I’ll find out that YingTao doesn’t want me anymore. And I’ll want him back...’ RenRan thought of everything that had happened in RenRan’s life. ‘I can only hope that her dream’s that simple...’ She began to think of all her misdemeanors, then ways to right her wrongs. [I should stop you right there. If it wasn’t clear enough before, as long as you’re in the story scenes, you’re supposed to do and say all the things the original character did.] ‘What? You didn’t say that earlier.’ [I mentioned earlier that it's risky to provoke this world’s consciousness into doing anything. So, we can only observe this world. What do you think this mea
Luna was right. She had inhabited Luo RenRan’s body. RenRan’s family belonged to the working class, but her gripe was not their standard of living, it was her parents’ favourtism for her brothers. She was the only girl, and she was the oldest. Anything her brothers did, she was responsible for. Any wrong they committed, they were let off with a more lenient punishment, while she was supposed to forgive and forget. Their expectations for her and the restrictions they imposed on her could not be compared to the standards they held her brothers against. The only solace she had was that her siblings never directly crossed her line, even when she was old enough to start working. If only it stayed that way forever. “RenRan... Forgive your brother, okay? You know he only took it because he needed it and only you can help him. If you have someone you need to blame, blame your father.” A gentle motherly voice coaxed her. “If your father helped, none of us would be
“Wh- What am I doing here?” BaoBao looked around in shock. He recognised this place. The last time he was here, it was to defend Luna. “Why am I back here?”The elder one sighed. “Why did you do it?”“D- Do what?”Gasps were heard around him.“It lies.”“It truly deceives.”“Surely, that’s bad.”“This can’t go on.”“It’s always this one system.”“Clearly there’s something wrong with it.”All the administration looked at the elder one, waiting for the go ahead. The elder one looked at BaoBao so intensely as if BaoBao was a specimen under his microscope. BaoBao gulped. He felt exposed. What was with this elder one? Whatever the case, Luna had already been sent to the next world. He could not dilly dall
“Don’t ignore me! I know you’re awake!” Someone pushed Luna’s shoulder hard. Her eyes flew open, and a purple and black galaxy unfolded before her. Her bottom left whatever she had been sitting on, but she did not fall. There was a resistance that made her body glide instead. Luna blinked a few times, stunned. "I dare you to say it again.” The same voice challenged her. Luna turned towards the source. There it was again. The sensation when she moved was familiar. However, she had no time to make sense of it. The deep voice belonged to a burly woman, instead of a man like Luna had assumed, not that it made anything better. Her guest looked as friendly as a starving lioness. Luna straightened her neat celestial-like robes while she quickly collected her thoughts. It shimmered and shone brighter than the glow emanating from her body. The fabric was so silky to touch that it was like water. Although it was transluc
“LUNA!” BaoBao jumped onto her. Luna grunted from the impact. It reminded her of how much he had grown from the first time she met him. ‘How is he so weightless but so heavy at the same time?’ “Hi BaoBao,” she laughed lightly, “Is this your new way of sending me to the next world?” “Huh?! No, no! It’s far too soon to be sending you to the next world, isn’t it?!” Luna laughed even more. “I was just teasing.” BaoBao blinked innocently. “Oh.” Luna looked at him endearingly. “You’re still so much like a kid.” She rubbed the top of his head lovingly. “Don’t systems live for eternity, if nothing goes wrong?” “Mmhm, what about it?” “It still felt that long to you?” “YES!” BaoBao confirmed without a second thought. Luna laughed. “Let’s spend some time together before heading to the next world.” BaoBao’s heart warmed and h
Nozomi closed her eyes and thought hard about his request. It did not feel right or good to take his years, but she had no right to dictate how he should live his life.‘Since he’s really fine with it...’Nozomi pushed her hands forward to cup his cheeks. “Okay...”Hikaru’s eyes brightened up. He promptly retrieved his book and readied himself. Nozomi watched Hikaru activate his magic with interest. The way his book’s ribbon splits and transforms into a robe and staff never got old. “Thank you, for going along with my wishes.” His heartfelt gratitude was reflected in his eyes as well. Nozomi smiled in understanding and squeezed his hands that were once again holding onto hers. Hikaru closed his eyes and focused on her presence, then said the incantation that he had memorised by then.Green glowing vine marks appeared
