Ashley and Pamela exchange fearful glances at each other. The same thought filled their minds.

How did Bruce suddenly appear here? How much of their conversation had he heard?

“You?” Pamela swallowed, her mind had gone blank.

Bruce looked around, checking to see if he may have missed something.

“Yes. Me.” He responded with uncertainty. “Sorry I interrupted. I'll just come back.” He took a step back in an attempt to leave.

Ashley shook her head and recovered from her shock at that moment.

“Bruce!” Ashley called with feigned excitement. “You're here.” She remarked as she gazed past the door to the outer space where her secretary was supposed to be seated.

As though being able to read Ashley's mind, Brice responded. “There was no one there, so I let myself in.”

Ashley bit down on her jaws and anger flashed in her eyes as her secretary came into view behind Bruce.

Benita, Ashley's secretary darted her eyes between the open door and Bruce's frame still standing by the do

“And?” Pamela's expectant eyes rested on Ashley. They were now alone again. Bruce had left and Pamela was itching to know what they had talked about.Ashley busied herself with the piled up paperwork, ignoring Pamela.“You're ignoring me.” Pamela said with a pout.“I don't have time to chit chat now Pamela. You can see my workload.” Having a sharp edge to it, Ashley's tone betrayed her wariness of telling Pamela about her progress. Pamela eyed Ashley's seated form as she was engrossed in the file with scrutiny.“You’ve been acting strange. Acting up and giving too much attitude. I just hope you're okay. Maybe I should leave and come back later.” As Pamela stood up from her seat and headed for the door, Ashley shut her eyes and took a deep breath. She had no evidence against Pamela but the doubt in her heart was poking at her. She was even more scared because it was only Pamela who knew her true identity. If Paul's claims were true, then she didn't want to risk telling Pamela too muc

DJ drew the seat out for Ashley and helped her get settled like the proper gentleman that he was.He showed up at her office and had asked her out to lunch. Ashley was free. Her supposed meeting had been rescheduled and it had been a while since she went out with him, so she accepted to dine with him.“Mr Leon? Really?” A smile graced Ashley's lips. Her eyes followed DJ as he pulled out a seat for himself. His specific introduction at her office had her wondering why he didn't just use his name. She didn't think it was him. He didn't have a good standing with his family and had dissociated himself from them and the name. So she never imagined he would introduce himself as a Leon.“Well, you seem to be more concerned about my family these days than you're with me, so I thought the only way to get your attention would be to come to you as one of the Leon's.” DJ's brows rose, a gesture that asked if she agreed with his logic.Ashley chuckled. “It sounds bad when you put it that way. Ashley's heart stopped beating for a moment. She sat there, motionless, fixated on DJ but not really looking at him. He had completely stunned her with the sudden proposal of marriage. She wasn't prepared for this. “Ashley.” DJ called gently. She had him worried with her sudden blankness causing regret to quickly fill his eyes as he waited for her to recover. He reached out and touched her hand on the table. It was a gentle, soft and pleading touch. She jolted back to reality and peeled her eyes to his, meeting his gaze. His eyes met hers with an apologetic look. “I'm sorry. I shouldn't have jumped that on you.” He apologized and she just stared at him, not knowing what to say. She couldn't formulate any words. Her mouth felt dry even though she had only moments ago drank from her glass of water. DJ chuckled nervously. His hand left hers and she felt inexplicably empty. “You know we'd have been married now if you hadn't had that accident. We'd be on our honeymoon

Ashley stayed up late in the study that used to be her father's. Now hers, she spent most of her time here, in solitude enjoying the quietness of this particular room. The space was set up like an office with a few homely items that added warmth. Mr Knox's large photo frame hung high on the wall just behind the large mahogany table. A part of the large desk housed Ashley's pictures from childhood into adulthood. To the right of the room, a L-shaped cupboard fitted to the wall providing ample space for file storage sat.The top of the cupboard was decorated with stringed art work of different kinds, Mr Knox's multiple business awards and two flower vases that stood like protectors at both edges of the cupboard. The left part of the office, where the curtains draped over the double windows in the room, accommodated a soft comfortable sofa, leaving the center of the room free and spacious.Ashley had turned off the lights, leaving only the desk lamp on. She sat in the office chair, her

She couldn't give up like this. Not after winning this much. She snapped her eyes open, refusing to let oblivious take her. Her eyeballs bulged out of their sockets and the veins in her temples popped with strain.A whimper escaped her quivering lips. She jerked against his grasp and placed a hand on his arm. And then Paul stopped. He had been carried away by his rage. Her small touch transported him back to reality. He pulled himself away from her. Dazed, he watched her. Almost as though he couldn't believe he did any of it.“Baby. Baby. I'm sorry. Baby, I'm sorry.” He begged. His tone filled with regret.Ashley's eyes dimmed as release flooded her. She gasped and panted, her breath hitching as she tried to catch it. Paul neared her, tugged at her, pulling her closer to himself and wrapping his arms around her.“I'm sorry.” He apologized again, sounding hoarse, as though something got caught in his throat. Ashley stubbornly sat up on the gurney despite the doctor's warning to lay still. The doctor had had to restitch her wound, fed her with a ton of pain killers and instructed her to rest. She didn't feel better. Her whole body felt as though she was run over by a bulldozer. The aching was almost unbearable. The effect of the anesthesia given to her had not worn off. She still felt sick, drowsy and lightheaded. Still, Ashley couldn't lay down peacefully. She was disturbed. Disturbed by the last words of Paul before he lost consciousness. He said he knew. He was aware of her secret. But how? Who could have told him? Only she and Pamela knew of this secret. Only Pamela did Ashley tell of this. So how? Paul had earlier warned her about Pamela and she didn't want to confront Pamela outrightly without proof. Could this be what Paul meant? Did Pamela tell him her secret? But Pamela had not even met Paul yet. Pamela didn't know of Ashley's relationship with Paul. Paul had seen

Ashley opened her eyes to the white lit room. The pristine ceiling stared back at her and the beeping sound of machines filled her consciousness. It quickly registered in her mind that she was still in the hospital. After Helen left, the nurse had given her something to make her sleep as she had complained about a headache. Her eyes roved around with exhaustion. She looked to her right to see a gloomy face of Pamela seated next to her bed, watching her. Ashley sighed. She looked up to the table by her bed. “Please pass me that glass of water.” Ashley requested in a croaky voice. She was parched. Her mouth felt extremely dry, an effect of the medication. Pamela quickly obliged. She stood up from the seat, grabbed the glass, helped Ashley sit up and fed her from the water. Pamela returned the glass after Ashley had drank enough. They stayed in awkward silence for a while before Pamela spoke, breaking the silence. “How do you know that man? Who is he?” Ashley glanced at her, the

Ashley shut the voice in her head constantly scolding her for spitting hurtful words at Pamela. Pam had been right. Maybe she was controlling, acting like an overbearing mother. And even though she didn't trust Thomas, she couldn't have at least respected Pam and tolerated him. All he did was help them. Grateful for the walk, she had enough time to reflect and simmer down. She would apologize to Pam. She reached her house and saw the car parked in front. She recognized the car as DJ’s. She glanced around and was pleasantly surprised to find DJ, but stunned to see him seated on the cobblestone step. “DJ?” She quickened her steps and met up with him. “Why are you sitting out here? Why didn't you go inside?” She asked, her gaze darting to the house, wondering if someone had asked him to stay out. “The maid who answered the door said you weren't in but would be back soon, and I didn't want to wait inside alone.” “You could have called me.” “I didn't want to disturb you.” She passed

Pamela's heels clicked angrily as she matched past Ashley. “Pamela.”. Ashley stopped her. “You should see these.” she dug her hands into her purse to fetch out something. “I got my hands on Bruce's financial record. And you won't believe what they contain.” “Good for you.” Pamela said sarcastically, not bothering to take a look at what Ashley had in her hands. “Are you alright?” “These damn signals.” Pamela muttered cusses under her breath. Her finger punched her device as though she was in a fierce battle with it. Frantically trying to book a cab, the reception on her cellphone was in opposition to her wants. “What are you so worked up about?” Ashley asked, catching up to her. Pamela ignored her, kept pressing on her phone, exiting and re-entering the app as she received the same service unavailable response. “Argh.” Pamela groaned in frustration. Ashley stole a glance at the screen. “Let's get to my house. I'll ask a driver to drop you off.” Ashley suggested seeing that P

Pamela eagerly got in the front seat, her interest in Thomas no longer subtle. “Thank you so much.” She buckled her seat belt, her gaze not once flickering off the young man. Thomas glanced at her. “It's no problem. Where're you girls headed?” “Up East.” Pamela answered. “Up East?” Thomas exclaimed. “That's on the other side of town.” He pointed out. Pamela chuckled. “Yes. Ashley's father lives on that side. And she lives with him.” “So what brings you all the way out here?” “Business. We are expanding our horizon, moving our business this way.” Pamela responded genially. “Oh!” Thomas nodded, understanding flooded his mind. “Yeah. We had our debut exhibition here sometime last month. A small awareness about our brand.” Pamela chortled. “I heard about that and I wouldn't call that small. Although I didn't attend, I saw a glimpse of it all over the net. It was a great show… Awesome designs… I couldn't get over the number two collection.” He chuckled. “So much so that I place

Ashley went back down. Her mission for attending the party had been a dead end. But not entirely unproductive. For one, she had Rachel in a messed up corner. That alone was enough to make up for the night. And it brought her great joy. The other, she got her hands on something very important. Something she could use to bring Bruce down. As she reached the base of the staircase, she weaved her gaze through the crowd to where she had left Pamela. She hissed. Pamela had moved. No longer in the same place. She would need to find her. She plowed ahead and blended into the crowd, darting her eyes through the small cluster of people, looking for Pamela. It didn't take long before she spotted Pam, intently focused in a conversation with a strange man. Ashley walked up to them. She heard Pam giggle girlishly as she closed in on them. Who was this man? And why was Pamela entertaining him? “Pamela.” She called, but her call went unanswered. “Pamela!” Ashley called forcefully. This tim

Bruce smiled at her. “I'll see you down stairs.” He gave her one long last look, his eyes lingering on the flesh of her exposed cleavage. With great effort, he peeled his gaze away. He adjusted his tie, tugged his jacket before he stepped out. Not once did he consider he was leaving a stranger in his bedroom. Not once did he think she should have gone out before him. As stupid as they came, Bruce went down, back to his party, leaving her there, in his room. Ashley had never seen a more fóolish ídíot than Bruce. It made her wonder what she ever saw in him before. Now alone, Ashley looked around the room. It felt like a cemetery. Everything in it was dead. It was nothing like the home she had created with warmth and love. The room had been restructured and repainted to suit Rachel's preference; bland. But of course, what could she expect from Rachel who knew nothing about love and warmth. She sighed. Her fears, confronted and defeated. Now only a painful memory. Taking one las

Ashley stood by the foot of the stairs, hesitating momentarily. She looked up the staircase, each case reminding her how familiar it used to be. The room suddenly began to close in on her. The large space became too small. The hairs on her skin stood. Goosebumps adorn her body. Her breath quickened and her body quivered with cold chills. She shut her eyes, lifted her dress and took one step up. She clutched to the mass of her dress too tightly as waves of memories hit her.It was torturing. But she didn't stop. She continued, climbing on with a racing heart. The beating of her heart overshadowed the soft music that echoed from the lower floor. For the first time after six long years, thick fear filled her guts. But not once did she consider stopping. She charged, matched forward, turning her fears into her fuel. She needed to do this. She needed to confront this.Cheering and reminding herself why she was doing this, Ashley reached the landing. Then came another difficult task. Wa

Pamela got the answer to her question. Ashley wasn't going to abort anything. Especially not with what they had tried to do. Bruce and Rachel had to be the worst humans on earth with the blackest of souls. And Pamela couldn't fathom how they lived with themselves. With so much wickedness in their hearts. “Have you contacted Alex?” Ashley's voice pulled Pamela from her thoughts. Her brows quirked as she got her mind back into the room. “Uh yes. He is safe and in hiding. Bruce wouldn't be able to find him even if he searches under the sea.” “Good.” “So what do you intend to do about this?” Pamela asked, referring to the information they had just received. “I'll go see the DSC myself. I need to ensure that he doesn't switch sides.” Her voice tinged with a smooth hardness. A hardness she developed when she first discovered their deception. If they were so heartless, she could as well return the energy. Pamela nodded in understanding. “Then what next?” Ashley's eyes glazed with an

“How did it go?” Pamela asked Ashley as she walked into the office. “How is Bruce?” “What do you expect? He's a hot mess, whining about his damaged reputation.” Ashley responded, settling into her office chair. “Does he suspect you?” Ashley laughed. “Suspect me? He has no reason to suspect me… Yet.” She added. Her expression turned brooding as she recalled Bruce's attitude towards her at the hospital and Rachel's confident smile. “What is it?” Pamela didn't miss the change on her face. Ashley shook her head and pushed the thought to the back of her mind. “It's nothing.” “I can't believe this worked out so well. For a moment I feared that the plan might come back to bite us. I can't believe Bruce went through the whole damn thing without checking once to see if things were going right.” “Alex is smart and Bruce is a fool.” There was no kindness in Ashley's words. Pamela giggled, finding Ashley's comparison amusing. Ashley swiveled her chair, turning her sides to Pamela while

Rachel froze. The hair on her skin brittled. Her eyes went wide with horror. Slowly, she peeled her eyes from the wall and fixed them on Ashley.“What did you say?” “Your sister's case is being reopened.” Ashley repeated.“For murder?” She asked, fearing that Ashley could hear the loud thudding of her heart. She was out of breath. They had everything taken care of. They erased all the traces. There was no way anyone would consider Lilian's death a murder.“I never said it was murder.” Ashley pointed and she saw the realization of her flop flicker in Rachel's eyes.“They're reopening the investigation, that's all I heard.” Ashley slanted her a glance. “You don't seem too happy about it.”“No- Yes- I mean, I am. I'm just wondering why now after all these years.” She said nervously.“Does it matter? Don't you want justice for your sister?” Ashley probed, watching Rachel tense. “Her body was never found. That's something to be worried about… I hear they'll bring everyone in for questioni
