Kael's POV

I stood in the grand throne room, my eyes fixed on Elaine, my betrothed. She was a vision of beauty, with her golden hair and piercing blue eyes. But her expression was far from lovely.

Elaine stood in front of me with so much rage in her eyes. Her fists were clenched tight as she spoke with so much disdain laced in her tone. "Kael, I demand to know what is going on between you and that...that slave girl." She spat, her voice venomous.

I could not help but scoff. I hated how Arianna was addressed as a slave girl to everyone. She was nothing close to that. As a matter of fact, I expected everyone in the kingdom to see her as a noble person, after all she was going to sacrifice her life for the betterment of the kingdom, whether she did it willingly or not did not matter.

"Slave girl? Do not address her as that Elaine. Her name is Arianna." I said.

I watched Elaine scoff at me, she shaked her head in disappointment. "Do I look like I care about what her name is? To me she is a slave girl!" Elaine yelled at me. She was beginning to irritate me with the harshness of her tone, I was one step away from snapping at Elaine.

"Why are you getting yourself worked up over nothing?" I snapped at her, adjusting my posture on the throne.

I watched Elaine's eyes widen in shock. "You take everything so lightly Kael and it is not funny at all! I saw the way you killed that guard just because he addressed her as a slave girl yet you call that nothing?"

Oh-

Was Elaine now acting out of jealousy just because I had saved Arianna from the hands of that despicable guard.

"He needed to be put in his place and all I did was make that possible. Is that why you are so worked up?" I raised a brow at her.

"Put in his place just because he tagged her as a slave girl? Give me a break Kael, I know there is more to that. Why have you let the walls you built around her collapse?"

I furrowed my brows in confusion at her, feeling a spark of annoyance. "What are you talking about, Elaine?"

Elaine's eyes flashed with anger. "Do not play dumb with me, Kael. I know all about Arianna. She is nothing more than a tool for you to unlock your powers. You need to distance yourself from her. Now. Make it clear to her that her duty is to sacrifice her life for you to rule the kingdom. Nothing more or less than that!"

I felt a surge of anger at her demands. Who was she to tell me what to do? "I do not think that is any of your business, Elaine. Stick to minding your own business so you do not anger me." I said, my voice cold.

Elaine's face turned red with rage. "How dare you!" she shouted. "I am your betrothed, and I will not be ignored!"

To begin with, Elaine and I were only childhood friends. It was my father's idea to spark up the whole marriage idea with her. I had never for once felt any romantic feelings for Elaine but who was I to protest against my father's orders?

I rolled my eyes, feeling a sense of boredom. This was exactly another reason why I did not want to marry her. She was too clingy, too possessive.

"I refuse to be ignored Kael, mark my words." With that, Elaine turned around and walked away. I choked out a small laughter and shook my head at her drama.

Why would she think that far about I and Arianna?

I rested my head comfortably and shut my eyes close for a quick nap.

Sooner than later, my nap was interrupted when the door to the throne room opened wide causing a loud thud to erupt. I snapped my eyes open to gaze at my father.

He entered the room. "Kael, I need to speak with you," he said, his voice firm.

I nodded my head in agreement. I already had a feeling that Elaine had said a lot but what exactly had she told him to get him this serious?

My father stood in front of me with a straight face. He cleared his throat and turned to ask me. "Elaine reported you, Kael. She is concerned about your relationship with Arianna. What sort of relationship is going on between you and that girl if I may ask?"

I snorted. "There is no relationship, Father. Arianna is just a means to an end."

My father's eyes narrowed. "Do not lie to me, Kael. I know you are drawn to her. But you need to focus on your duties as king. You can not let your feelings get in the way." My father spoke so confidently. It made me confused, was he taking Elaine's words over mine?

I felt a surge of anger at his words. How did he know how I felt?

Before I could respond, my father continued. "You need to marry Elaine, Kael. Arianna may be the key to unlocking your powers but Elaine is the key to securing our alliance with the neighboring kingdom. And you need to love her, truly love her, or risk losing everything we have worked for."

I felt a chill run down my spine at his words. Love Elaine? It was a joke.

But as I sat still, trying to process my feelings, I could not help but think of Arianna. Her fiery spirit, her determination, her beauty...

What was it about her that drew me in? And why could I not seem to shake her off?

As I stood there, lost in thought, my father's words echoed in my mind. "You need to focus on your duties as king..."

But my heart seemed to be telling me something else entirely.

It had been days since my confrontation with Kael, and I could not shake the feeling that something had shifted between us.Ever since then, Kael began to act soft towards me. He was not bugging me or ordering me around. It seemed like the walls he had set between us had finally collapsed. I was unaware of how to feel, whether to let my guard down or not. I wondered if that was just one of Kael's scheme to manipulate me, it was hard for me to trust him, to trust anyone at all.I sighed heavily and allowed the cool breeze to pull my hair sideways. I enjoyed the deafening silence, it was soothing and calm to my spirit. As I turned a corner, I heard the sound of footsteps behind me. I was startled by the noise. I turned around averted my gaze towards the direction of the culprit that had just interrupted my peace. My jaw dropped as I saw Kael approaching me, his eyes fixed on mine."Arianna," he said, his voice low. Arianna’s POVI stood my ground, unyielding, as Elaine’s words hung in the air like a toxic fog. The cool breeze from the garden felt like an icy slap against my skin. I blinked, determined to grasp the reality of what she had just said, but my thoughts kept returning to Kael. His kiss—his touch—was etched in my memory. How could he kiss me if he was entangled with someone else? How could he betray me like this?Elaine faced me with eyes gleaming, a mix of malice and triumph dancing within them, like a predator that had just cornered its prey. I took a deep breath, my composure slipping, but I refused to let her see the storm of emotions brewing inside me."You're carrying his child?" I asked firmly, the weight of the question heavy yet resolute.Elaine nodded, the smugness on her face unwavering. "Yes," she declared, her voice filled with unwarranted pride. "You must be so naïve, Arianna. He has always belonged to me, and nothing will change that. Not even you."I clenched my fists,

The murmurs of discontent swirled around the room like a storm, and Kael could feel every set of eyes on him.“Alpha Kael, your leadership is being questioned,” came the voice of Elder Corwin, a sharp, cold presence within the pack. His eyes glinted with something dangerous as he stood at the edge of the table, arms folded across his chest. “You’ve allowed rogues to breach our borders and threaten our people. And yet, you act as though nothing is wrong. You’ve been absent. Distant. And this pack is suffering for it.”The words stung, though Kael kept his face impassive. He had heard these complaints before, but hearing them now, after everything that had happened with Arianna, was harder to swallow than ever.“I’ve been dealing with matters that concern the future of this pack,” Kael replie

My gaze remained fixed on the distant sky, though I wasn't really looking at the clouds. I could feel the weight of them, dark and suffocating, swirling in my mind. Memories—betrayals, lies, and broken promises—rushed at me like a flood. Each moment carved into my heart like a sharp, cruel knife, and tears slipped down my cheeks unnoticed. I miss you so much, Darius, I whispered to myself, a smile breaking through my somber thoughts.“Arianna?” I heard my name called from the corridor. The voice was familiar, but I hesitated to respond. It was Alpha Kael. I frowned as I stood my ground, knowing I had to face him. The door swung open, and he leaned against the frame, his nostrils flaring as he assessed me.“Where the hell are you going?” he asked, crossing his arms. I momentarily struggled to speak, feeling the weight of my position in the pack house. I steadied myself.“I’m sorry, Alpha Kael. I’m not allowed to go anywhere, so I’m merely admiring my reflection,” I replied, maintaining eye contact. He chuckled softly, his expression

Kael’s POV The rain was still whispering against the windows when I stepped back into my quarters, the scent of her still hanging in the air—wild rain, warm skin, and something else. Something of mine. She was sitting by the fire, wrapped in a blanket, legs tucked beneath her. Her head turned at the sound of the door, and for a moment, the world just... stopped. Arianna. Goddess, I didn’t know how she did it. How she made me feel like the ground beneath my feet was shaking and solid all at once. One look from her could settle my wolf or drive him into a frenzy. The patrol had been dealt with—quick and clean. A couple of rogues testing the borders, nothing serious. But the entire time I’d been out there, all I could think about was her. The fire in her eyes. The vulnerability in her voice. The way she had looked at me before I left, as if handing me a piece of her and daring me not to drop it. I hadn’t. I wouldn’t. “Did you win?” she asked, eyes glinting with tired amusement.

I could feel it in my bones—the first rain in months. The land had dried to a brittle crisp, and the trees stood still like they too were holding their breath. With one look up, I peeled the shirt from my skin, casting it aside with little ceremony. My skin tingled with every gust of wind, every shiver racing across my spine. My heart drummed with something more than excitement. It was freedom. Finally.I stepped outside barefoot, letting the cool earth kiss my soles. The first drop landed on my collarbone, slow and sweet, then another, and another until the heavens cracked open. Rain. Real, cold, blessed rain.I laughed—loud and shameless—as I tilted my head back and let it pour over me. It was cleansing, wild, like the Goddess herself was pouring life down onto us again. My skin was slick, my hair curling and c

But when my vision cleared and the haze of sleep faded… There she was. Elaine. Standing above me with the smugness of a she-devil dressed in silk. The silver pitcher still dangled from her perfectly manicured hand, droplets sliding down its side like the poison she spit from her mouth every time she spoke. “What the hell, Elaine?” I snapped, wiping my soaked face, shivering in the cold morning air that clawed at my bones like a ghost. “Oh, I’m sorry,” she said with a syrupy smile that di

I held her like she was the only anchor keeping me sane, and maybe she was. “Arianna,” I whispered against her lips, “stop trying to break free. I love you.” She gasped. Not the delicate kind. It was ragged, raw—like my confession tore something loose inside her. Her palms pushed at my chest, but her eyes… gods, her eyes trembled. Still, her mouth parted, softening, until— SLAP! Pain exploded across my cheek, and I reeled back, blinking. The world cracked like shattered glass and spun around me, bright and disorienting. Suddenly, it was gone. Darkness.
