“Hunter, are you okay?”

“I’ve thought that for a long time. What if she lied all these years? I believed her because I didn’t have any other choice and people think I’m a fucking vampire,” he said in a shaky, angry voice. “I’ve been on the island for three days and I’ve been fine. What if...?”

Ripping off his jacket, Hunter ran into the water, allowing the sun to beat upon his pale flesh. Pulling the bandana from his neck that he used to block himself from the sun, and gloves from his hands, he pitched them onto the beach.

Ava watched with tears as he let his head fall back with arms outstretched, almost as if praying.

Wading deeper into the water, wearing only his jeans, he looked completely broken. She had never seen someone so damaged by their past. Her own struggles with her mother didn’t seem near as bad now.
