Adele's Pov I stared at my dad in shock, not wanting to believe what I was hearing. “Listen carefully.” He said. “There is a company interested in working with me to take that bastard down. All I need you to do is to get Dan to employ you in the financial department and I will tell you what kind of information I will be needing. Once you have gotten it we can go ahead and launch a hostile takeover. I will get my company back fully, and my ally will get RICH INTERNATIONAL.” He told me the details of his plan. The more he talked, the lower my heart sank until I was afraid it would drop out of my feet. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I knew my dad didn’t really like Chris buying a big part of his company, and he was willing to do a couple of bad things to get it back, but I never imagined he would do something criminal, and worse still involve me in it and risk me going to jail. Did he hate Chris so much or love me so little? “So do you understand?” He asked when he was
Adele's Pov On the way home, I kept going over the conversation with my dad. What he was asking me to do was wrong in so many ways. Not only was it criminal, it could ruin the Richards and no matter what dad said Chris Richards didn’t deserve that. He had been very nice to Jay and I since we became a member of his family. Zoey too, even Dan had changed in the last twenty four hours. Did I really want to hurt these people? But on the other hand If Chris took full control of Dads company he would make sure it stopped existing. I knew enough of his business practices and his dislike for my dad to know what to expect. I was so distracted the cab driver and Jay had to raise thier voices to tell me we had arrived. “Mommy are you okay?” Jay asked looking into my worried face. “I am fine honey.” Dan was sitting besides the pool, wearing only a pair of swimming trunks. At the sight of him all my worries suddenly vanished. “Hey, how did it go with your dad?” He asked. I tri
Adele's Pov At breakfast Jay talked of nothing else except yesterday’s swimming lesson. I smiled as I watched him. I couldn’t remember the last time he had been this happy or excited. “I am happy you enjoyed it honey.” I said when he stopped to drink his juice. “I did and Mr. Dan has promised to teach me every weekend until I learn how to swim.” “That is really nice of him.” I said. He nodded. “He is nice. I really like him. I am happy you married him.” “Married who?” Dan asked coming into the dining room. “You,” Jay said before I could stop him. “I am happy my mom married you. I like you.” Dan looked shocked he glanced at me. I was shocked too and embarrassed. Kids never hold back. I thought. “You like me?” He asked Jay as if he wasn’t quite sure he’d heard right. Jay nodded and smiled. “You are a good daddy.” For a second Dan looked as if my son had said something unbelievable, then he smiled a little. “Thanks. I like you too.” He said awkwardly. He grabbe
Adele’s Pov He stared at me, confused by the fierce tone of my voice. “What do you mean?” He asked. “I am not going to do anything.” “So what do you mean by making my dad lose his company.” “I never said that. What I said was he won’t have much of a company left, if he doesn’t change the way he does business.” “What do you mean?” I frowned. “He dosen’t take advice, acts like he knows it all. You would think he would learn from his mistakes but no way. He has been talking of selling shares to Owens Group, which I know is a bad idea.” I felt myself pale a little. “Owens Group?” I asked. “Yes. He wants them to buy shares but I said no. I don’t trust Jeff Owens. Your dad is mad about it but I don’t care. I am trying to save him from himself, otherwise he won’t have a company left.” Chris glanced at me curiously. “Is everything okay?” I bit my lips in embarrassment, angry with myself for my silly outburst. I was acting like someone with a guilty conscience. I had to be
Dan put his cell on the table. Adele had sounded surprised that he had answered the phone. He had been surprised too. Only a couple of weeks ago he hadn’t wanted anything to do with her or her son. But she had changed everything that night, when he’d fallen asleep on her lap. It had meant a lot to him that she had stayed with him. When he had carried her room he’d fought the urge to get into bed with her. And the next morning when he had seen her at the breakfast table, looking so sweet and sexy he had fallen madly in love with her. And there was Jay, the kid was smart and he couldn’t help liking him. He smiled remembering their swim lesson yesterday and how they had both enjoyed it. He had been terrified by the thought of having a family, but now he had one, he found it wasn’t so bad. Karen called him again. He cursed in annoyance. She had been calling since Saturday and he had tried to ignore her but the calls were irritating. He had told her from the beginning that th
“You would? Why?” He asked startled. “Because I really like you, even though you are a nasty jerk sometimes,” she smiled. “But deep down you are a great guy. I know that. I’ve known that right front the first day I met you.” He looked at her. Trying to see any sign that she was lying, but decided she was being honest. He was right and Zoey had been wrong. “Why are you asking me this?” She asked. “Nothing, I just wanted to know.” He said quietly. “Would you have married me?” She asked. “I would.” They continued to stare at each other. They both had so many questions they wanted to ask, but they didn’t want to risk ruining the moment by saying something that would upset the other, so they kept silent. “It is getting late” He said suddenly standing up. “We should get some sleep.” “You are right. Good night. ” Adele tried to walk past him but he gently grabbed her arm. She held her breath as he turned her around to look at him. He pulled her closer and his mouth foun
“What are you talking about?” He frowned. “Adele came to see dad and told him she felt the deal our dads had come up with was a bad one. She was angry that your dad had a huge control of the company, so she told dad that she had a plan to get it back.” “What plan?” Dan asked coldly. “She wants to slime her way into RICH INTERNATIONAL and get information that could ruin the company, then work with another company and take it over.” “No. Adele couldn’t plan such a thing.” “Then how do you explain the company she wants to work with is Owens Group, owned by her ex’s dad?” Dan felt color drain from his face. But he refused to believe it. “There must be a mistake.” He insisted. “ Adele won’t do that, what is she hoping to gain?” “Money and power. That is all she cares about. But Dad was against it. He told her Chris was his best friend and he wasn’t going to agree to such an awful plan. He has warned her not to do it. But she is such a greedy bitch she won’t listen.” Dan s
Karen entered the house, smiling in triumph. “Mom! Are you home?” She called. Tina came into the hallway. “You dad is home for lunch. Let’s go outside.” She said quietly. “Marie! Bring us orange juice.” "Yes Ms. Turner." They went to sit on the deck chairs by the pool. “So how did it go?” Tina asked after Marie had served the juice and gone away. “Better than I ever thought.” Karen laughed. She sipped her juice and continued. “At first when I told him he refused to believe it. He kept saying no Adele couldn’t do such a thing. It seems he was already falling for the slut. I could see it the way he talked about her.” “I told you that would happen. That is why we had to move quickly.” “Well when I started talking of having evidence he changed his mind. It was so easy.” “Are you sure Zoey planted the evidence?” “She did. I called her this morning to make sure. Your plan was great mom. You really thought it through.” “Well I can’t take all the credit. It w
They turned. Adele was standing at the door. “What do I have to be told?” She asked looking from Chris to Rachel. “That i got the DNA result changed to confuse the cops.” Chris said quickly. Adele knew instantly she was being lied to. “Is that so?” She asked. “Yeah,” Chris said, “well now you know I better get going. Bye.” “Are you going to tell me what that was really about?” Adele asked Rachel after Chris walked out. “Chris told you already.” “Rachel, what is going on?” “Nothing. Come on let's not keep Jay waiting.” Still frowning suspiciously, Adele followed her to the living room. ** Dan was getting back into his car when Chris pulled into the car park. “Dad! I've been to the house Zoey told me you were here; I'm just coming from your office. Your secretary said you hadn't come in yet.” “Yeah, I stopped at your house. I was about to call you. I wanted to see you.” They rode the elevator to his office. “What's going on with Craig? Why was he arrested for Hal's mur
Chris was still in his office trying to make sense of his discovery, when his thoughts where interrupted by his ringing cell phone. He frowned when he saw Zoey was the one calling. “Hello? Slow down Zoey I can’t understand you, Craig has what? Arrested? Why?” He sighed. “I am on my way.” He called his lawyer and asked him to go to the police station, then went to join them. He first spoke to the cops, before he was taking to see Craig. “Dad! Tell this your dumbass lawyer to get me the fuck out of here.” Craig said angrily. “I haven't done anything wrong.” The lawyer rolled his eyes. Chris asked to speak to Craig alone and the room was emptied. “Get me the fuck out of here dad! Now!” “The cops said you were seen a few times, going to Hal Daniel’s room.” Chris said ignoring him. “What is the big deal? He is my friend. We have known each other from college.” “Before or after you dropped out and started being a pain in my ass?” Chris snapped. “Dad!” “If he is your
“Dad, do you have something to do with this?” Dan asked Chris when the detective had left. “Me? Of course not.” Chris said. “Really? Because I noticed you didn't show any surprise when the result was read.” Rachel said suspiciously. “Because I knew in my heart Adele was innocent.” “Really? Or is it because you did something like forging the result.” “Stop it Rachel. I didn't do anything. I swear.” “But this doesn't make any sense.” Adele said confused, “Hal is Jay’s father. I am sure of it.” Chris shrugged. “Well maybe there was a mistake with the DNA. Anyway, forget it. You are off the hook. The cops can look elsewhere for their suspect.” He stood up. “I have to go, see you guys later and don't worry about anything, I have it handled.” “Sure you do,” Rachel sneered. Chris left grinning. “He changed the results,” Rachel said, “I know him too well.” “Why won’t he admit it?” Adele asked. “Because he wants to keep you in the dark. So you don't get into trouble if he gets caug
Zoey was on the phone as she entered the dining room. “-I am glad you are okay. Don’t worry Dad will make sure everything is okay…yeah, I read the news on the blog, don’t worry they can only talk, everything will be fine. Don’t mention it, take care.” She hung up giggling. Craig, who was at the dining table picking at his food. looked at her suspiciously. “What is going on?” He asked. “I read Adele was arrested, then I read she wasn’t but was only invite for questioning. What’s the truth?” “The first one. The second is Dad trying to do damage control.” She laughed sitting down. “Spill, what is going on?” He asked impatiently. “Adele was arrested for Hal Daniels murder.” “Why?” He asked alarmed. “The murder weapon was found hidden in her office.” “Shit! Seriously?” “Yeah. The cops want to run a DNA test on her kid. For some reason they think Hal is the dad, which may give a motive. Crazy right?” She noticed Craig looked scared. “What's wrong?” “Nothing.” “Don’t
Dan watched helplessly as Adele was taken away by the police. “What the hell is going on! A gun in the office?” Zoey asked shocked. Dan didn’t answer. He rushed out and almost ran to Chris’ office. Zoey was right behind him. Hee burst in, startling Chris. “Dad the cops have arrested Adele!” “When? Why” Chris asked standing up quickly. “Just now. They found a gun in her office! I know she is being framed. We have to call a lawyer!” “A gun?” “Yes. The one used to kill Hal Daniels. We have to do something!” Dan insisted. “Calm down, I’m on it now.” He called his lawyer and picked up his coat. “Let’s go, the lawyer will meet us there.” He told Dan. “I am coming too.” Zoey said. “No. It’s okay, you stay here.” Chris said. She watched them walk into the elevator, then when the door closed, she began laughing. Yes! It had been so easy to plant the gun. She had waited until she saw Adele leave for a meeting, then she snuck in and put the gun behind the filling cabinet, before m
Adele's PovAter Zoey left, I sat staring at the blank screen of my computer. In my mind I was going over what I would tell Dan this evening. I wanted to tell him the truth without upsetting him so much. I sat there for hours, worrying and sweating. I wondered if my dad had heard about what had happened. I didn't think so because Chris had made sure the press kept my name out of it, but even if I had been arrested and sentenced to death, I knew my dad won’t care. He was still mad at me. My phone rang and I nearly jumped out of my chair. “Calm down,” I told myself as I picked up the phone. It was Dan. “Babe I am stuck in a meeting, you’ll have to have lunch without me. Sorry about that.” He said. “It’s okay, I understand. I love you.” “Love you too, see you later.” I hung up and swallowed nervously. I knew he couldn’t wait for this evening, but i was dreading it. I was happy he couldn’t take me to lunch because I wasn’t even thinking of food. The thought of it made me ill. I was
Zoey stared at the note. There was no return address. She turned it over and saw an address written on the back. The address looked familiar but she wasn’t sure. Then she looked at the key. It was clearly a key to a storage unit. That’s it! The address was a storage unit. Was this some stupid prank? Or was it for real? Whatever the case, who was responsible? Chris? Or maybe Craig? She put the note and key back in the envelope and put them in her drawer, but she kept thinking about it. If it was for real and would put Adele in jail, and maybe even destroy Dan, why not? But she had to be careful. If Chris found out she was still plotting he would throw her out for good. She went home for lunch, hoping Craig would be at home. She wanted to ask his advice without giving too much away. She found him slumped in a chair, staring into space, biting him lower lip. He jumped startled when she called his name. “What the fuck is wrong with you?” She asked annoyed. For the past few days Cr
“Are you sure you want to come in today?” Dan asked Adele the next morning, as she stepped out of the shower. “I do. I have gotten over the shock of yesterday. I am fine.” He nodded but he wasn’t convinced. Everything wasn’t fine. In his office yesterday he had thought about Adele’s story and it didn’t make sense. If Hal wasn’t able to attend the meeting, why didn’t Adele let his company know? They could have sent someone else. Driving all the way to see him was suspicious, he remembered the way she had looked when he had come into her office, the afternoon she’d first met Hal. Dan had guessed something was wrong but she denied it. He was so worried that he went to meet his Dad. Chris was on the phone when he came in so he waited. “The news has already gone round about the murder.” Chris said when he hung up. “I’m going to make sure I keep Adele’s name out of it.” “Don’t you think it’s strange?” Dan asked. “No. It was a public place, and the victim works for a big compan
Adele's Pov. I was still sitting in the hotel lobby, when Dan rushed in with Chris behind him. “Are you okay babe? Are you alright? What happened?” He asked anxiously. I had called him five minutes ago, as soon as I'd managed to pull myself together. I had almost fainted after seeing Hal on the bed, a bullet hole in his chest. My scream had attracted a passing housekeeper who rushed in, and when she saw the body, led me to the lobby, then called the cops. I was still shaking and scared as Dan hugged me. “I am fine. Really.” I said. “What where you doing here honey?” Dan asked. “Yeah, why are you here? What is going on?” Chris asked. I stared at them, tongue tied. I hadn’t thought about what I would say when this question was asked. “I found a dead body. Hal Daniel’s body in his hotel room.” I stammered. “Yeah but why were you there?” Chris asked. “He asked me to come and talk about the contract.” I said. “In his room?” Chris asked confused. “Yeah he said he
