“Don’t be crazy!” Sasha said. “You haven’t eaten much after you have come back from your shift.” She walked ahead of them to a long table that filled most of the corner. It was laden with rich food consisting of wines and delectable dishes that made her mouth water as the tendrils of steam wafted through her nose. Chicken, lamb, steaks, various breads, fish, carrots, peas… it was a lavish feast.
Sasha picked a plate and loaded it. Xavier picked a glass of wine.
“You should eat something Amelia,” she said, when she found that she was hesitant.
Amelia walked to the counter and picked up a few steamed asparagus with dip and started to eat. Her eyes flitted to the people in front of her. Why were they all so heavily dressed? And what was it with those feathers, which kept ruffling and fluttering every now and then. She noticed that some of them were already dancing on the dance floor. The music had picked up.
“How many do you know out here, Xavier?” she asked because she hardly recognized anyone there.
“Seven. Only the ones who worked for restoring this castle.” He sipped his wine and then saw how Amelia was staring at the dancing couples. “Don’t stare at them Amelia. You will get shocked and they might get offended.”
“Why will I get shocked? It is a simple dance that I am loving to watch,” she replied flatly.
Xavier sighed.
The rhythm was such that Amelia felt like dancing. It was so enticing, like it was calling her. She took a step forward.
“Don’t even think of going there, Amelia. We are going to leave this place,” Xavier warned.
Sasha watched her. She whispered to him, “Let her go. She needs to unwind after Daniel. I’ve heard that he cheated on her but she is hoping that it is a rumor and I know that she wants to go back.”
“That’s horrible!” Xavier was stunned.
“He is such an ass. Amelia is a prize-catch. Not only he loves to drown himself in alcohol, he is even a cheater. Amelia should move on!” he sympathized with her.
“She should. And if she won’t I will just show her the evidence that he cheated on her with none other but her cousin sister, Julia.”
“Shit!” Xavier almost spilled his wine on his shirt. “This is so disgusting! Don’t tell her.”
Sasha sighed. She wanted to drill sense into Amelia. She really longed for Daniel. Did she even realize how low he used to make her feel?
“Whatever. She shouldn’t go there. She won’t be able to see what is going on. These people are wilder than wild and I don’t want you girls to face any of this further. So let’s just finish our food and go.” Xavier looked towards Amelia but she had stepped further towards the dance floor. He called her. She didn’t listen. He tried to move, but to his horror, he found that his legs had frozen. He couldn’t move a step. He stood rooted to the ground.
Amelia walked a little further. The music was drawing her soul. She could still feel him boring a hole in her body. Suddenly the dance floor became brighter and what she saw shocked her beyond words. She stopped in her tracks. A man had slid his hands under the dress of a girl and was holding her crotch. There were two girls hanging on the arms of another man, wrapped around him like ivy from head to toe. She gasped. The music was playing in her mind—cajoling her, seducing her like a siren to come and be its slave. She walked a little more and then stopped again. Her hand went to her neck. She had to go back. This wasn’t for her. She back-walked two steps when suddenly someone held her from behind.
“Can I have the pleasure of a dance with you, Amelia?” a tantalizing voice, almost to the point of seduction whispered in her ear. The electricity that pulsates in her body was like magic. It was so strange that it was stupid. Perhaps she was imagining things.
She clutched her black bodycon on the side. It was him. Every muscle in her body clenched and her facial muscles tightened. She looked at the dance floor again and saw that more people had joined. Xavier was right. The party was about to become wilder. Almost all of them were doing something wild.
“Maybe, next time,” she resisted his invite. “I am sorry but I don’t do all that,” she pointed at the people.
“You think highly of yourself, Dr. Amelia,” he replied and she could feel him smiling on her neck.
She bit her lip. What a fool she was? Her face reddened.
He was still standing behind her. Holding the small of her back, he nudged her lightly. “Let’s dance.” Saying that he walked up with her to the dance floor and she walked in tandem with him, entranced, entrapped.
Nerves took over her body. The music pumped in her veins and she found herself lost in its beats. It flowed through her soul.
He held her back from behind with his left hand and brought his right hand forward to hold her hand. He picked it up, gripped it and held it close to her belly. She started to sway slowly, feeling like his music as he struck her chord. The beats ascended and she closed her eyes inhaling his fresh sea sir scent and resisting herself on the inside to not get her brain hijacked by this. The heady fragrance, the heavy music and all those strange people – they moved like water, in powerful, graceful movements of seduction.
Vargauz swayed softly with her. “Do you like it?” he murmured.
“The music is nice…” her voice trailed off. She wanted to give into him.
“Can I come to see you tomorrow?” he asked.
“No.”
“I would like to say thank you to you for attending to me.”
“Not necessary,” she replied, resisting every warm breath that fell on her neck. “I do that everyday.”
Suddenly he pushed her at an arm’s length while holding her right hand and then pulled her back. She was now facing him.
Vargauz stared into her eyes and she couldn’t resist staring back at him. The way he looked at her, it was as if he could see through her. He held her hands and danced with her for the next half an hour while maintaining every formal distance he could. Amelia swayed with him, entranced, entrapped and feeling stupid. Why did she feel that the air was thick with magic and smoke and unreasonable attraction? Her heart pounded in her ears.
Amelia rushed to the balcony and gripped the railing tightly, heaving uncontrollably but trying to contain the sounds as best as she could. Moonlight trickled through the oak trees into the balcony providing her with much needed coolness. Her body was drenched in sweat.
The man in front of her was Him! Her posture stiffened and she experienced a fluttery feeling in her stomach. What was he doing here? She gulped. Slowly, she walked to her chair and said, “Good afternoon,” while taking her seat.Vargauz turned his face towards her and a half smile played on his lips. She could swear that she saw a glimmer pass through his black eyes.As usual he was wearing black leather pants and shirts and a black long overcoat. Was this the only outfit he had in his closet? And what was it with his long overcoat?“Hello Amelia,” he repl
Amelia rushed away from there. She was aghast at what she blurted in front of him. She blamed it to her over-tensed mind after having a conversation with Lyrie. Not even once she had the guts to see him back. Her face was flushed scarlet and she shook her head at being so silly. Before entering the trauma ward, she leaned on its door, calmed her pounding heart and then walked in. Perhaps it was a better idea to take Sasha with her or Xavier. She shook her head. No, she had to fight it out. It wasn’t something she could shove on someone else. For how long would she use crutches? The afternoon passed without many patients and she had to steal five minutes to satiate her growling stomach. Her duty got over at 4PM. She signed out and headed to her apartment. It was almost 6PM when she
Lyrie’s stomach churned. The presence of this man was so intimidating that there was a thin line of sweat on her forehead.Blood drained from a face and for a moment Amelia thought that she was sick. What was it about Vargauz that made Lyrie so scared? Her face appeared to age and it seemed that she forgot to breathe. Was it that her plans were about to fail? Did she feel threaten that now she won’t be able to face Xicouth? Did that mean that now she wouldn’t pester her anymore? Was having a boyfriend such a big thing? If this was the case, Amelia had to take advantage of the situation. Shedding her inhibitions, she smiled at Vargauz and said huskily, “I am so
Like a gentleman, Vargauz opened the door of the car and smiled warmly at Amelia. It was a beautiful car like a model who sashayed on the floor in a fashion week in a swimsuit.
The cart moved in the cart path and Amelia noticed that it was pretty dark, only the cart path was lit. “I think we should come some other day,” she remarked. “It is so dark that I cant see anything.” Plus she really wanted to go back. It was already 10PM and somehow she regretted the idea of coming with him to inspect the golf course in the dark. She didn’t know why she was having so much confidence in this stranger that he would not allow anything wrong to happen to her.
Amelia was pressed hard against Vargauz’s chest and was ascending at a rapid speed. She closed her eyes tight shut and she grabbed him instinctively. There was heavy wind slapping across her hair, her face and with the way she was lifted up, it looked as if the world beneath them had vanished and they got sucked into oblivion. All she could feel was his strong, muscular arms across her back and ruffle of strong wings that flapped through the air. She was surely dreaming.
Nyka was enraged that the nymph, a woman lower than her, was tricking her. The portal was created by one of the demons who she had bargained with and it wouldn’t stay for long. She had to get to the nymph, kill her, grab the bag and then come back. Not much time was left.
“Do you think this is going to work?” asked Nyka. Now that things were moving forward, her interest was increasing. Would Xikoth actually give that much money for the antidote? She chuckled and then rubbed her hands.
“We must go and meet the Contact, Xikoth,” said Amelia over dinner. She had been craving to meet him. Though her father, Ivanov was recovering, she thought that keeping an antidote handy would be better.
Xikoth brought his wife closer to his chest and kissed her forehead. “Calm down Amelia. We will find her soon.” He pulled her to his lap and cradled her. She pressed her head into his chest and curled her knees. This place was the safest, it felt like home. She craved for it every minute of the day. Her thoughts went to Nyka once again and she regretted not killing her earlier. So much could have been prevented if that woman wasn’t in their lives. Xikoth rocked her lovingly until she fell asleep.
Xikoth’s wings were flaring in rage. He was having trouble controlling his anger. The concubine had escaped and invited his wrath. He knew that he would peel off her head the moment he saw her. “What is it that you want to say, Javri?” asked Xikoth baring his fangs.
When Nyka saw Amelia walking in the court dressed in the normal human clothes, she suspected that Amelia would be visiting the human realm. And there were high chances that she would visit her father, but there were higher chances that she would visit Lyrie. If that happened, all her plans would be spilled and Xikoth would kill her in rage. She had planned on making Amelia her slave because she thought that Xikoth was interested in her, but now she had to flee for life, because if she didn’t, then it was highly likely that she wouldn’t see the new day. The first thing that
Pride glowed in her eyes as she walked coiled around his arms like she was his owner. And Xikoth—he couldn’t feel prouder. It was a blissful feeling. Under his breath he whispered, “Amelia…”
Xikoth’s lips trembled. He had been in love with Ilaria for so long, had remembered her each day, she had been in her dreams everyday, her scent aroused him so to the point of no return, her memories had become a part of his being that it was difficult to let go of her—his Ilaria, his mate, his wife.
It had been agonizing two hours and the court proceedings weren’t stopping. Xikoth was only getting ever more impatient with his lust for his wife. It had been such a long wait that every second without her was unacceptable. His gaze went up to the balcony where Nyka was sitting with her nymphs and his disgust for her returned. He averted her gaze from there.
