Today, unlike usual, Daniel was feeling delighted. He has not been this excited for years now. He guessed that he was pretty curious about seeing the mystery girl who caught his eye the other day, even though he had not seen her face. She had been on his mind ever since he had a glimpse of her, but he was too caught up in his work to go to the cafe again. He was busy preparing a presentation to show to the owner of ‘The Brunch.’
Hopefully, today he will be able to see who she was—that is, if he was right about her working in that café. He doesn’t know, but he feels like he knows her from somewhere or has some kind of connection with her for some unknown reason. Well, only time will tell.
Things, however, have always been busy for Ella. The workload in the café and the chores at her home were increasing day by day, leaving little time for herself. She also had to look after Lily. So, more or less, she had been juggling the work of the cafe and home, more so, for the past seven days. Particularly now, after Rowan had informed them about the likelihood of new modifications at the café.
He wanted to expand his business and chose to entrust the entire operation to her and his daughter. Though her life can be pretty hectic from time to time, she loves every bit of it. She would not change it for anything.
Ella enjoys her post as a manager at the café ‘The Brunch’, and Lily also makes her life pleasantly tolerable at home. After all, being a single mother is not that easy.
Just like the previous day, Dan and Timothy ordered the same coffee while they waited for Mr. Nelson to arrive for their meeting. It was rather unusual to hold the meeting at the same cafe rather than an official meeting space, but an informal setting may have been just what was needed for a good end.
Rowan Nelson is the owner of this cafe, but his daughter and her best friend manage it. They don't know much about them, but they expect to meet them. Daniel and Timothy came a bit early to enjoy the beverage along with the delicious dessert this place offers, and they both had to agree that the food and drinks served here do not disappoint one bit.
While Timothy was entirely indulged in the scrumptious chocolate mousse, Daniel was looking out for the mystery girl as he sipped his coffee, but to his utter dismay, there was not a single trace of her.
Dammit!! Where is she?
Hell, when did he become so desperate? He had never seen her face to begin with.
Nonetheless, there were still roughly twenty minutes left for Mr. Nelson's arrival, so to pass the time, Daniel decided to browse through the book section in the cafe. As he walked through it, he could see that, for a small section, there was diversity in the books. From children's fantasy to self-help, the café provided a good variety of books for customers of all tastes. It was rather impressive. As he scanned through the kid section, he saw a familiar figure stretching herself to place a book on the top shelf. She looked awfully familiar from behind. The same petite height, the same cocoa-colored hair—everything about this mystery woman reminded him of her.
‘No, Dan. Stop it. This mystery woman from yesterday could not be her. You can’t think about her now. Not after all these years.’ He tried to block all his thoughts about her and went towards the mystery girl to help her out.
Ignoring his thoughts, he grabbed the book from her hand and placed it in its destined place, with his front faintly touching her back.
“Thank you so much,” the mystery woman said, making him go rigid.
That sweet, angelic voice. Dan doesn’t even need to think hard to recognize that voice. After all this time, he recognize that voice as clear as a day.
“Shortcake,” he whispered.
Ella, though, did not have the need to turn around to see the person who helped her. Except for the voice of the person, the name called by him was enough to recognize the man behind her. There was only one person who called her by that nickname.
She desperately hoped that she had heard wrong or that her mind was playing games, but unfortunately, that was not the case. She clearly heard the person calling her shortcake.
“Danny,” she whispered, but no voice came out. She was speechless.
She did not dare turn around. She was too scared to see and face him. After all these years, how the hell is she supposed to respond? Thousands of thoughts were going through her mind, but none of them gave her the courage.
What is she supposed to say to him after six years?
How is she supposed to react?
The worst is how he is going to react to seeing her after so many years. And most importantly, what the hell had she gotten herself into?
There was a sudden rush of panic inside her. So much had happened between then and her leaving.
Ella could not help but close her eyes tightly, wishing all this was nothing but a frightening dream. But who the hell was she kidding? Daniel’s presence behind her was no less than a bittersweet dream, but it could easily transform into a terrible nightmare within a flick of a second.
Daniel, however, found her body stiffening in front of him when he called her by his given nickname. At first, he was too shocked to react. But then his reaction was an impulse.
As she was not turning around even after hearing his voice, he grabbed her shoulder and spun her towards him to ensure he was not being delusional. He could not have been, as there was only one person on this planet to whom he ever felt attracted, and the mystery person being his shortcake could not be just a mere coincidence.
Yet, even remotely aware of the identity of the woman, his breath was caught in his throat when he finally saw her. Never had he thought that he would find his shortcake, Ella, in Rosewood.
When Daniel turned her around, she was at a loss for words. She knew that a day would come when she would have no choice but to face him. But never had she ever thought that the day would come so early if anyone could call six years soon. Ella looked at him in the eyes hesitantly, and there were tonnes of emotions flashing. It stunned her. No words were being exchanged. They were only looking at each other, trying to remember what they had been like six years prior to this day. It was as if the time had stopped and they were the only two people standing. “Danny,” she whispered without realizing it. She wouldn’t be surprised if he did not hear her. Daniel doesn’t look that different, apart from his face. Unlike before, he had faint stubble growing, which made him look even more attractive. On the other side, Daniel was still not able to believe that his Ella was standing in front of him. It has been six years since last he saw her. She was as beautiful as she had ever been. Her ha
As soon as their meeting was over, Ella excused herself immediately and rushed home to her safe heaven. She was fully aware that she was acting cowardly, but she was not prepared to deal with Daniel and Timothy at the moment. She cannot afford to give them the opportunity to corner her and question her about why she left everything behind. She was not at all prepared to respond to their legitimate queries. Aubrey, however, was worried about her friend’s sudden disappearance. During the entire meeting, she could feel her friend sitting tensely beside her. There was something that was bothering her friend, but she decided to give her space and confront her later. Daniel and Timothy, on the other hand, wanted to have a one-on-one conversation with Ella, but before they could even have a chance to speak to her, she ran off. As soon as Rowan departed, Ella did not waste a minute and went off with him. There were lots of unspoken things between them. Daniel wanted to talk to her about a l
It had been a while since Ella wished to stay cooped up in her personal heaven. Even though her current occupation was not something she had ever intended to pursue, she had come to accept it and even enjoy it over time. Life is truly unpredictable. All of her dreams from back then looked far-fetched now. Nonetheless, she does not regret her choices. Despite the fact that her life had taken a new curve, she remained satisfied. Now, she was not sure whether her feelings would remain the same. Working as a manager at a café was not something she envisioned, but as the days went on, she began to enjoy her new profession. It did motivate her to get out of bed in the morning and go to work. She liked to walk to the café or drive herself to work. But, unlike on prior occasions, she did not wish to leave her residence. The encounter with Daniel and Timothy is still fresh in her mind, and she did not exactly trust herself with the secret she had been withholding from him for the past six
The past week has been good for Ella. She, Aubrey, Timothy, and Dan had been working on a project to expand the cafe. Initially, she thought to clarify her status with Ron to Daniel and Timothy, but she still hadn’t gotten a chance to tell them the entire truth about the marriage, and later on, she assumed that both of them figured because they would have asked her. Further, her conversation with Ron made it apparent that everything was in jest. At present, it was Saturday, and Ella was having an argument with her daughter. Lilly was persistent about eating chocolate, and Ella was against it. They continued arguing until she heard the doorbell. Before she could take a step and open the door, Lilly beat her to it. Daniel was driving around when he came across Ella’s home. Well, he had not been officially given her address, but he knew that she lived next to Nelson's. He decided to speak with Ella. Their conversation was long overdue, and it was about time they talked. He stopped the
Ella was in hysteria. Even though the Daniel she knew was one of the most amazing person, she wasn't sure if he had changed in the years of her absence. Now that he knows about Lily's existence, he could easily take her away. She might be getting ahead of herself, but she cannot say for sure if things between her and Daniel will ever resolve amicably. He had stormed from her home, and it was only a matter of time until he marched back and take their daughter away without even listening to her explanation. When the doorbell rang later at night, it made Ella stand as still as a rock. She was too anxious to open the door and face Daniel again. However, when the bell rang again, she took a deep breath, slowly walked towards the door, and opened it. At first, she was relieved to find Timothy standing in front of her instead of Dan, but at the same time, she could not help but feel disappointed that he hadn't even come to meet his own daughter. Did he not want anything to do with Lily?
Ella was up early. Unlike usual, she did not need to have her own daughter as her alarm clock. She had hardly gotten any sleep last night, as she was stressed about Dan’s reaction. Before she knew it, it was past one in the afternoon, and Ella was still lost in her own thoughts. Like any other day, she was monotonously doing all her chores, but with the additional stress of Daniel. It was the doorbell that made Ella stop in her tracks. She was confident that it was not Timothy, but Daniel. He would have told his friend about Lily being his daughter and not Ron’s. “I want to meet my daughter,” Daniel stated as soon as she opened the door without even giving Ella a chance to say anything. She, however, quietly nodded her head in response and stepped aside to make space for him to enter her house. “Follow me.” She said to the father of her daughter and led him to the backyard of her house, where Lily was playing with her toys. “Lily, someone is here to meet you.” She spoke to her dau
At present, Daniel was going through papers in the file when his phone rang, making him pause his work. He picked up without looking at the caller ID. “Hello.” “It’s been over two weeks, and you still didn’t think it was necessary to call your mother and tell her if her son was fine or not.” His mother, from another line, demanded an explanation. “Sorry, ma. I have been busy with work. I have been working on a project.” He explained. “Danny, life is beyond work as well. For the past six years, you have done nothing but work. Plus, it is the longest you have stayed alone without us.” “Ma, you make me sound like a kid. You know work is important, and I have been staying with you all because it’s nice to come back home to people who love you. Living alone can be boring.” He stated. But he knew that it was partially a lie. He hated living a single moment alone, as it always made him think about Ella. “How much we try, we both know that your father and I cannot fill the void of Ella.
Ella was doing nothing but trying to relax by watching one of her favorite shows on television. It has been years since she actually took time out for herself and did nothing. Usually, she is busy taking care of Lily, but now that she is out with her father and meeting her grandparents, she can be alone. She knew that at some point she would have to meet Lucia and Finn, but she wasn’t ready. What reason could she possibly give them for her abrupt departure? They were no less than like parents to her, as they always took care of her like their own kid, but she had to do what she had to. So, she thought that it was an ideal decision to let Lily go alone with Dan to meet them. But at the same time, Ella also knew that she would have to face the music soon and tell all of them the real reason for leaving because she wouldn’t be able to run from them for a long time. From the past reactions of Dan, she wasn’t sure if she did the right thing by running away because, not once, he made her
Ella was sleeping peacefully when she felt someone jumping on her bed, and it didn’t take a genius to know that it was her daughter. “Lily, for the sake of God, stop jumping on the bed and let me sleep.” She groaned in annoyance and snuggled up with the pillow. Dan let out a small grunt when he felt someone’s hand around him. He opened his eyes slowly, only to find Ella hugging him in her sleep, which made his eyes wide as he didn’t know how their sleeping position changed. “Lily, like a good child, go back to sleep like most of the kids would do this early in the morning. You really are like your father. How the hell can the two of you get up this early? Just go back to sleep.” Ella told her daughter grumpily, which made Dan chuckle. He figured that Ella still didn’t realize that she was sleeping on him, and if she had, then she would have jumped miles away. Dan signaled for Lily to stay quiet and leave the room, which she obliged. He tried to remove Ella’s hand from him and trie
Ella’s head was aching badly when she woke up. It was as if something big was sitting on her head. She tried to get up but couldn’t do it. She turned herself only to find Dan sitting on the ground with his head on the side of her bed, sleeping peacefully. Unknowingly, she had a smile, looking at his face. She brought her fingers into his hair and started ruffling it slowly. It made her think of the old days when everything was not perfect, but it was not at least this complicated. When she felt him waking up, she removed her hair from his and pretended to be asleep. Dan was feeling better when he felt her hand on his head. After a few more minutes of this pleasure, he decided to officially wake up but found Ella pretending to sleep. “I know that you are awake, Ella.” He rolled his eyes while smiling. “I was not pretending to sleep. I just woke up.” She bites her lips. “Yes, that’s why there was a ghost hand in my hair.” He stated, stopping himself from laughing out loud. “Whatev
It’s been almost two hours since Daniel had to leave her house. He was sitting on the couch in his own apartment, contemplating when to see Ella next. Just when he decided to call Aubrey to check on his daughter Lily, his phone rang, and much to his disappointment, it was Fred instead of Ella. He picked up his phone. But before he could say anything, Ella’s father started to speak. He sounded petrified. “Dan, come to Ella’s place right now. She is not opening her door.” “Fred, don’t panic. I am on my way.” Wasting no more time, Dan took the car keys and rushed to the mother of his daughter’s place. Within five minutes, he reached and saw Fred banging on the door. Even Ron and Aubrey were trying to call her. “What’s going on?” He asked them worriedly. “Ella has locked herself inside. I tried to call on her phone, but it was switched off. She is not responding to either of us,” Aubrey explained. “Do you guys have a spare key to this house?” He asked them. “We are idiots,” Ron mut
For the past few days, things have been monotonous for Ella. She used to sleep, eat, work, and take care of Lily. She kept her talks minimal with her father, hardly noticing him. And she didn’t have to work hard to maintain a distance from Daniel, as he was doing that for both of them. She had never felt so rejected, ever. Ella turned the knob to enter her home, only to find Bellatrix and Candice sitting with her dad on her couch. Her daughter was sitting on her father's lap. But she was furious, as her eyes were solely on the women who had made her life hell. “What the hell are you two doing here?” “Now, this is no way to talk to them, Ella. I have called them here so that all of us can sort out the differences.” Her father explained. “There is nothing to talk about. Lily, come here right now. You are not sitting in the same room as them.” She called her daughter. “Ella, I get that you don’t like me now that you know that I am not your actual mother, but to create hatred in the
Things were going pretty smoothly after her confession, much to Ella’s surprise. It’s been almost three days, and not once did Dan try to talk to her, which she didn’t know was good or bad. She had been observing him, and he seemed to behave normally, as if she had never told him the reason for leaving. But whereas his mom and dad were concerned, they were pretty supportive and understood her completely. Yes! What she did was pretty cowardly, but people make mistakes and learn from them. Ella was going into the living area to call Dan and Lily for lunch when she saw the sight in front of her, which made her heart melt all over again. Lily was sitting on Dan’s lap, and both of them were laughing. She had unshed tears in her eyes. Moments like this always make her feel like a bad person and a terrible mother. She didn’t want to ruin the moment, so she decided to go inside the kitchen without disturbing the two of them, but God had other plans for exactly that moment. The doorbell ra
