Evander’s POV

I give the remnants of my woeful breakfast a disgusted look. I don't have time to have the chef make me something else. Nor do I want them to – not ever again. It seems it's time for me to hire a new kitchen staff.

I'll make Ralfi do it.

The thought amuses me as I leave the dining room behind. Unfortunately, it does nothing for me today. For now, I'll just have to do my patrol at the border hungry.

My personal maid is waiting for me in the foyer, my jacket in her hands. Thank the gods at least Yvaine is consistent in her duties. She helps me on with my coat, then I exit the house.

Ralfi is already outside, patiently waiting in the Jeep.

"Good morning, Evander," my Beta says as I climb into the passenger seat.

"Morning, Ralfi." I gotta be honest, I'm not feeling the "good" part of that sentiment. "I need a new kitchen staff. Hire a new team immediately."

If he finds my request unusual in any way, he doesn't show it. He simply nods, acknowledging the directive.

Evander’s POVWe ride in silence, and my Beta, always unfillable, concentrates on the road. I don't know what came over me back at the house, but I need to focus right now. I have an important task ahead of me. The safety of my people relies on our defense at the border. It is a duty I can never let slide."What's the situation at the border?" I ask to get my head back in the game."Since the Lycan Prince's visit, Lycan attacks have decreased, but we still have Werewolves, who were attacked by Lycans and became rogues, flocking to the pack's borders to seek refuge.""We'll do everything we can for them," I say, gazing out the window. "We may even get to invite some new members into the pack, and not just help them all move on. We could use some new Omegas, and I think the pack as a whole would like to see some more pups running around.""I'm pregnant with your child!" The ghost of her voice resounds in my ears, sending an icy chill down my spine."Are you all right?" Ralfi asks, brief

Evander’s POV"Where is Aurora?" I can't believe how much that question stings. I can't even look my mother in the eyes. The situation is too raw, too new."Decisions have a price," Aurora said to me more than once over the course of our marriage. I suppose the bill for my recent actions is coming due."Why are you home early?" I ask instead, feigning more concern than I actually feel. I'm sure everything with Tozen is fine. My mother is one of his closest advisors. But then again, with the King of Kings, you never know. "How did the meeting with the Alpha King go?"My mother backhands the question away as if it were of no importance. "Everything went fine. So well in fact, King Tozen no longer needed me at his side. He specifically instructed me to return home to ensure the deal with the Lycan Prince was successfully completed."I can't help but snarl at the mention of the Lycan Prince. That bastard. How dare he insist on taking Aurora with him! Marching right up to her, giving her t

Evander’s POVI can feel my mother's stare burning holes into the back of my head. I already know she's going to take me aside later to find out all about Aurora. But for now, the refugees need our aid and the staff at the way station cannot fulfill the promises I just made without help. We – myself, Ralfi, and my mother – get down to the business of improving the lives of these people.I check on the girl who approached me earlier and find that she has gotten her father the care he needs. It's depressing to learn that all he needed was a few water bottles. It took some hours, but by the time the day is done, everyone is fed and clothed, and they knew where they're going to sleep that night. As predicted, my mother cornered me after the last of the crowd was gone, herding me back to the far reaches of the way station where we wouldn't be overheard.“What is wrong with you?” she demands, and I know this is going to be worse than I imagined. “You said Aurora is no longer the Luna. Evander’s POVI blink at my mother, shock robbing me of the ability to speak."Elder Sansom is dead?" I repeat stupidly. The information does not want to compute."Yes," she says gently, seeing the effect this reveal has had on me."Are you sure?""Evander, I was at his funeral."The elder was an imposter? Nalani lied? I sent Aurora away for a lie!?My vision goes red, my teeth elongate. I want to tear and rip and shred. I want to bite and gash…"Evander!"My mother's voice brings me back from the edge of shifting. Still, the rage boils within me and I know my voice is harsh when I say, "Let's go."My mother and lieutenant don't need to ask where. We all pile into the Jeep and Ralfi steers us toward home.No one speaks on the ride and I'm grateful for it. It gives me a chance to channel my hot rage into cold fury.An Alpha must never show emotion. As the calm descends, I'm able to think more rationally. There's a chance Nalani was misled as well. Evander’s POV"You cannot do this to me!" Nalani screeches, her no longer tearful eyes blown wide. "I am the Luna of this pack and I will not be treated like some sort of common criminal."She lifts her chin – regal, arrogant, stunningly beautiful – and the image that immediately comes to my mind is a coral snake. So colorful. So deadly."No one is treating you like a criminal," I say as patiently as possible. "But your refusal to comply is suspicious.""HOW DARE YOU!" she gasps. Suddenly, her face contorts with surprise, pain, and …fear? She clutches her chest, her perfectly manicured nails digging into her skin. She gasps again, then goes deathly pale. She reaches out a single, trembling hand to me the second before she collapses.Acting on total instinct, I catch her smoothly, cradling her in my arms. My mother is already on the phone to Dr. Oliver, and without any thought or hesitation, I'm out the door, running to the hospital, Nalani still dead in my arms. The doctor meets me i

"A way to show you that the allegations against her were false." She meets my eyes and I see her inner resolve. "That's why Nalani poisoned her. She didn't want Aurora to show you the truth.""It's possible," I say because it is. It seems anything is possible at this point."Don't dwell on it," Ralfi says to my mother gently. "Whatever the case, whatever happened, Evander will make it right."My Beta has a lot of faith in me. I hope I prove worthy. I have every intention of trying.I ask a nurse if I can see Nalani, but she tells me that Dr. Oliver has mandated she have no visitors for at least twenty-four hours. "Are you pregnant?"The question seems to hang in the void between us, sucking all of the air out of the room, leaving me on the verge of hyperventilating. I've barely arrived here and I've already been discovered. No wonder Evander never wanted to take me on his more clandestine missions."Aurora?" Josephine asks again, even more gently this time. "I might be able to help." She reaches out and takes my hand. "Will you let me help?"How could I resist such soft-spoken words? It's been so long since anyone has shown me kindness. I crumble beneath the force of tenderness. I am weak to the seemingly sincere offer of aid."I am pregnant," I confess, then squeeze her hand for strength. "Not far along, but… far enough, I guess.""Too far along for it to be Prince Mykal's child you mean."I wince at her blunt statement of fact. "Evander, what are you doing!?"I can't believe what I'm seeing. Evander's malevolent grin is so far out of character for him, it's hard to believe this is the same man I married. My gaze shifts to my father who is struggling to regain consciousness after Evander knocked him out. My ex could be harsh at times, but I've never before felt such…evil."You're coming with me," my blood-soaked former mate tells me. He crosses the room in two great strides, then takes hold of my arm."We can't go anywhere!" I protest. "You're injured, all that blood, and my dad… What did you do to my father?"My brain is having a hard time keeping up with all that I'm witnessing. None of this makes any sense. Five minutes ago, I believed Evander to be on the brink of death, mortally wounded in an ambush that took him and the pack by surprise. But now, he seems as fit as ever despite all the blood on his tattered clothes. His grip on me tightens painfully. I look into his eyes, but instead of finding the man

But someone or something is closing in.Every instinct I have is screaming for me to fight, to tear the menace to shreds.I move as quickly as I dare through the woods and back to the campsite. I hear the battle before I see it, the snarls and clashes of steel. I follow the scent, so light and refreshing. My heart longs to breathe it in more fully, to bury my face in her hair while I hold her in my arms.Aurora.A quiver goes through me at the thought of seeing her at the end of this trail.I should be tracking the scout, trying to pick up his path, but my feet refuse to heed my brain's command and instead take the route my heart craves most. The scent leads me to a clearing in the woods, then finally a cabin. It's a modest structure, built from logs and slate. It's well below the means I am used to living in, but it appears sturdy.A man exits the cabin and I instinctively draw back behind a tree. By the moonlight I can see he's an older wolf, past his prime, but still strong. His head tilts, and there in the lines of his profile, I see Aurora's features made masculine and bold."I know you're out there," Aurora's father calls. I hear him pump the barrel on a shotgun, then see it when he brings it to his shoulder to take aim into the night.

The battle rages all around me. I can taste my own sweat. Blood is on the wind."Evander! This is the spot we scouted earlier." One of my lieutenants points to a clearing on the top of a rise. "We need to set up our operation before we lose the moonlight."I give him a nod, granting him leave to begin preparations. He doesn't make it ten feet before we hear a yelp from below. Someone got caught in a trap.I hope it was one of the Moonvalley pack.I breathe in the night, taking the measure of the woods. The forest is dark, but not entirely unfamiliar to me. The Amber Sky pack – Aurora's familial pack – has territory not many miles from where I'm standing.I can only hope that scant distance is enough to keep her safe.My warriors are ready to fine tune our plan of attack when I enter the clearing. I look at each of their faces before I speak, happy to find resolution in every single one."You know the plan," I tell them brusquely. "In the hour before dawn, we bypass the forest and atta

It took longer than I would have liked, but eventually, I set out for Werewolf lands, and my father's cabin beyond. The journey was long, but mostly boring, thank the gods. There were no problems at the border crossings.I stand now on the crest opposite the property, gazing upon the house from the outside. It's been years since I've been back. I approach the house cautiously, the memories flooding back with every step I take. The back porch where we all used to sit and watch the sunset.
