Camellia's POV

The moment I heard the voice on the phone, I snatched it back from Esmond.

"I'll be there right away!"

Esmond grabbed my hand. "I'm coming with you."

Without giving me a chance to refuse, he pulled me toward the door.

I tried to shake him off but failed, and I couldn't help but frown.

My mind was too preoccupied with worry for Ernest to argue with Esmond, so we rushed to the werewolf hospital together.

The smell of disinfectant mixed with the sweet, metallic tang of wolf toxin inhibitors filled the hallway. The harsh overhead lights cast shadows under Esmond's brow.

He gripped my wrist as we passed through the automatic doors of the intensive care unit, his knuckles almost crushing my bones.

"Let go!" I yanked my hand free, nearly knocking over a nurse's cart.

Lyra clawed restlessly along my spine, sensing the scent of a weakened wolf.

The attending doctor's glasses reflected the green light of the monitor. "Mr. Sanders' wolfsbane levels are three times the normal limit

Camellia's POV"Esmond, you don't need to pretend to be a good mate. From the moment you cheated, there was no way we could stay together. Just leave. I don't want to argue with you at the hospital."Esmond knelt in front of me, his expression soft."Cam, I'm not pretending. Whether it's being good to you or taking care of Ernest, it's all from the heart. Why do you always twist my intentions?"I looked at him. "Because your kindness always has an agenda. You're acting so humble now because you want me to forgive you for cheating. Isn't that right?""Whether you forgive me or not, I have ways to make sure you can't leave me. I'm only trying to make you happy because I don't want to see you hurt. Do you really not understand, or are you just pretending not to?"His matter-of-fact tone made me sick to my stomach. He betrayed me, yet he had the audacity to say something so shameless.I turned away, refusing to engage. Camellia's POVA chill swept over me. I couldn't stop trembling. The pine-needle scent, mixed with the overwhelming pressure of an Alpha's dominance, pressed against my skin. The temporary mark on the back of my neck suddenly burned with searing pain.Esmond pinned me against the carved bedpost. Moonlight filtered through the stained glass, casting a golden-red glow in his eyes."You think moving out can sever the bond?" His fangs grazed the unhealed bite mark on my collarbone, the taste of blood rolling in his throat.I arched my back and let out a threatening growl, my nails tearing through the silk sheets.Lyra slammed against the mental barrier in my spine, desperate to tear apart the betrayer who had defiled our den. When his hand slid under the hem of my silk nightgown, I caught the scent of an unfamiliar omega mixed with the bitterness of vervain."Don't touch me with those dirty hands that have been all over someone else!"I raised my knee to strike his abdomen, but his iron-l

Lionel's POVCamellia's hand on the car door tightened unconsciously, her fingertips turning white. She bit her lower lip, then said softly, "Alright, sorry for the trouble."With that, she took a step back, still holding my jacket, and turned to leave. The rotten scent of pine needles and vervain mixed with her sweet lychee and rose aroma, making my temples throb. My wolf, Leroy, raged within me, tearing at my spine. "You'll regret this! She needs our protection!"I lit a cigar and took a deep drag, the nicotine suppressing the desire rising in my throat. "She's Esmond's mate.""That's just a temporary mark left by that fool. Their bond is about to break!" Leroy's fangs pierced through my mental barrier. "If you just re-mark her—""Enough."Leroy grumbled in dissatisfaction. He didn't understand me, but I understood him. He was driven by primal instincts, the urge to claim and protect our mate. But Camellia's situation was too complicated. I was Alpha Drogo's son, but I was no longer

The moonstone at the tip tore through my shirt, leaving a stinging pain.Priscilla roared, "For that barren bitch from the Shadowfang Pack, you're willing to ruin your inheritance?"When the cane came down a second time, I caught the jewel-encrusted shaft with my bare hand. "Priscilla, you should be more concerned about how to explain to Alpha Drogo why you've been harboring a rogue, which could lead to the Ironclaw Pack being investigated by the elders.""As for the child in her belly, it must be dealt with!"As I finished speaking, six or seven burly pack guards entered the room and moved to take Hazel away."Priscilla, please, save my child… I don't want to lose him…" Hazel sobbed, pleading with my mother.Priscilla slammed her hand on t

Camellia's POVAfter returning to my apartment, I ordered a pizza and took a shower.Just as I finished drying my hair, my phone rang. I picked it up and saw Noelle's name on the screen. I pressed the answer button."Noelle, what's up?"Noelle's gentle voice came through. "Nothing much. I just wanted to ask if you've started working recently?"I hadn't planned to hide this from them, and with Claire showing up at the werewolf hospital, I figured it wouldn't stay a secret for long."Yeah," I replied. There was silence on the other end for a moment before Noelle spoke again. "Did you and Esmond have a fight?"A while back, when I visited the Shadowfang Pack, I'd told Noelle I was trying to conceive. Now, suddenly, I was working. If nothing had happened, she wouldn't believe it.I let out a soft sigh. "It's not exactly a fight."I absentmindedly twirled a strand of my chestnut curls around my finger, my nails tangling in the hair."Noelle, this needs a longer explanation. When we both ha

Esmond's POVAs Camellia spoke, her voice began to tremble. That shaky voice struck my heart, one blow after another.I watched the tears trembling on her lashes, my throat suddenly feeling like it had been rubbed raw with sandpaper."I'm really sorry…"Since she'd brought up rejection, I'd said "I'm sorry" too many times, but this time the burning pain on my tongue felt especially real. When she wiped her tears, the faint mark from her ring finger gleamed white in the moonlight. It suddenly reminded me of the night eight years ago when I'd slipped the ring onto her finger. Her ears had been just as red then.My wolf clawed restlessly in my mind. The sharp sound pierced my temples. It longed for its mate, longed to repair the broken mate bond."Go home," she said, her wrist still bearing the bracelet I'd given her last year. The platinum clasp peeked out from her sleeve.I had so much to say. I wanted to stay with her, even if it was just to be by her side in silence. But I knew her t

Claire's POVHearing this, I looked up at Blanche in disbelief. My wolf growled in my mind, a warning triggered by the threat.Unfortunately, Blanche was just a human."Blanche… you could've kept this quiet. Why report it to headquarters? Just because I made one mistake, does that erase all the hard work I've done before?" I asked.I'd pulled all-nighters for experimental data, even sleeping in the lab.Why was Blanche only focusing on this one mistake and ignoring all the good I'd done?I gripped the glass partition of the lab, my knuckles turning white from the pressure.Last Christmas Eve, when I'd stayed overnight with the centrifuge, it wasn't the smell of gingerbread I'd inhaled but the stench of wolfsbane."The hard work you've done is what you're paid for. Especially since you're working on life-saving drug development. I can accept experimental failures, but if you're falsifying data, I won't accept any excuses!"Blanche's voice was heavy. Camellia's POVThe smell of disinfectant and pheromone neutralizers clashed in the ventilation ducts. I stared at the temporary mark on my neck in the mirror. The bite mark from the fangs had healed, leaving only a faint crescent-shaped scar. When my fingertips brushed the edge of the crescent, a pained whimper rose from deep within my spine—Lyra, my wolf, was growing weaker as the mate bond fractured.Lyra thrashed her tail restlessly deep within me, her claws scratching at my ribs through the flesh.A werewolf's superhuman healing should have made such a minor injury vanish instantly, but the crumbling mate bond was causing my body to function more like a human's.I picked up an ice pack and pressed it to my cheek. After about ten minutes, the burning pain subsided. I returned to my workstation. As soon as I sat down, my colleague, Rhea, slid her chair over to me.This human usually carried the sterile scent of the lab, but now there was a faint undercurrent of excitement—clearly, n

Camellia's POVI glanced down at my bare wrist, then looked up and said, "I like it, but it's not practical to wear during experiments."He was silent for a moment before speaking again. "Cam, I don't mind you working, but experiments are exhausting. Back in college, you were always pulling all-nighters in the lab. I don't want you to overwork yourself. I can have my assistant arrange something else for you, okay?"I frowned, shooting him a disapproving look. "This is the work I love. No matter how tiring or demanding it is, I'm willing to put in the effort. I hope you can respect my choice."His grip on the steering wheel tightened slightly. "Alright, it's up to you. If you ever get tired of it, just quit. I can take care of you."I smiled faintly but didn't respond.Take care of me? Please. I was too lazy to cook, so I grabbed my keys and headed out to grab a bite.As I opened the door, I nearly jumped out of my skin—Esmond was standing in the shadows. I instinctively took a step back."Cam, it's me," he said, his voice hoarse, like he'd been standing there all afternoon.I frowned. "What are you doing here, just standing around?""Cam, can't you ever forgive me?"I stayed silent for a moment, then looked at him calmly. "Stop, or I'm calling an Uber to escape this cheesiness.""Fine, I'll shut up."I forced a smile, but the loneliness in my chest refused to stay buried.Eugenia had dragged me out to keep me from wallowing at home.Since discovering Esmond's betrayal, the fractured mate bond had left my emotions raw.I'd cried alone more times than I'd admit. But in public? I wore indifference like armor.Eugenia, bless her, avoided mentioning Esmond entirely. She wanted me to move on—and so did I.After lunch, we hit Neiman Marcus.Under the Italian crystal chandeliers of the men's department, Eugenia's fingers hovered over the mother-of-pearl buttons of a Brioni bespoke suit."Let's see this one," she said. Camellia's POVI thought Esmond would disappear for a few days after last night's drama, letting me enjoy a peaceful weekend. But the next morning, I was woken by knocking.Opening the door, I found him holding a bouquet of roses. The flash of hope in his eyes was painfully clear."Cam…" He stepped forward with the roses."What do you want?" I cut him off, irritation sharpening my tone.I wasn't letting him ruin my weekend."Cam, I found out everything about yesterday. I swear it'll never happen again. Has Priscilla always treated you like this? Why didn't you ever tell me?"His question almost made me laugh."We've lived in the same pack for years. Did you need me to spell it out? You grew up with Priscilla—you know exactly how she is."I stared him down until he looked away, guilt written all over his face.My laugh turned bitter."You had three years to notice how she treated me behind your back. Any Omega in the Ironclaw Pack could've told you. You just never cared to ask, didn't

"This has nothing to do with you."Camellia's wolf let out a threatening growl, the moonlight slicing her pupils into vertical slits of golden amber.I quickly stepped in front of her, catching the scent of another werewolf.Just as I was about to speak, I noticed her shirt was half-dry and soaked through. The fur on the back of my neck bristled, and my fangs pierced my lower lip in rage. "Whose stink is on your shirt?"Camellia let out a cold laugh. "You should ask Priscilla that question."I froze, frowning. "What do you mean?""Go ask her and you'll find out."With that, she walked past me and left.I immediately called Priscilla, the engine idling echoing in the parking lot. After all, in civilized society, it's hard to imagine what kind of family would raise an heir who cheats on his spouse."My words seemed to infuriate Priscilla. She was so angry that she picked up the glass of water in front of her and threw it at me.I didn't have time to dodge. The water hit me squarely in the face.Cold water dripped down my chin and into my collar, my hair clinging wetly to my skin. The fabric of my shirt clung tightly to my chest as it absorbed the water.I instinctively closed my eyes, and Lyra let out a warning growl in my mind.I suppressed my Alpha aura, which was on the verge of erupting. This was, after all, a human restaurant.Just as I was about to speak, someone handed me a few tissues."Here, dry yourself."I turned, water droplets rolling off my lashes.
