MONICA’S POV.

My heart seemed to jump and I was out of words as I saw him seated on the sofa cross-legged. He was as elegant as an Alpha should be. His aura was all around the place and he was handsome.

His beauty was so fierce that my heart started to tremble. What if I said the wrong thing? What if he didn’t like me? What if he didn’t want to have anything to do with a woman?

A lot of ‘what ifs’ went through my mind but I shook my head and brushed it off. He was going to like me. What was there not to like in me? I was perfect. I was the heartthrob of every man in my father’s domain. So there was no way in hell he wasn’t finding me attractive.

He turned, noticing my presence and looked at me. I let out a light gasp as our eyes met and it seemed like fate at that moment. He wasn’t my mate but the feeling I felt in my heart was a roaring feeling. It was like a burst of fireworks. We were meant for each other. We were a perfect match.

There was nothing pulling us apart. I was meant

33LUCIEN’S POVI had been quite uncomfortable with Monica because the conversation had been forced and I was more than happy to hear Alpha Grayson clear his throat as he emerged from wherever he had been. I got to my feet and turned around. He was coming down from the stairs gently and I bowed a little as a sign of formality and respect. He returned my bow and continued his journey down the stairs that was taking him an unexpectedly long amount of time.“Daddy you were too late. He’s been here for ages.” Monica whined, suddenly sounding like she was fifteen years younger.“I’m quite sorry. I had a little issue back upstairs. I hope you aren’t annoyed.” Alpha Grayson said as he approached me.“It’s all fine.” I assured him and watched him go to sit on a separate sofa.“I’ve been keeping him company. That’s why he says it’s fine.” Monica said, rolling her eyes and the Alpha laughed while I went back to sitting.“I guess I do have to thank you for that, and I’m also afraid you would hav

34MONICA’S POV.“What?” I asked in shock. Why was it not going to work. “What did you do, dad?’ I asked with disgust all over my face.“He’s not ready. He didn’t even look like he had the time for that so I’m going to advice you Monica to focus on finding your mate as soon as…”“He’s my mate! Nobody tells me what to do and what not to do. I will marry him, I will convince him. Does he know all the years I’ve wasted loving him? Does he know all my hopes and dreams of him? Daddy, I’m not letting him go!”“Monica!” My dad called sharply and I folded my arms and threw my face away from him. My competitive spirit was sparked. I was going to get Lucien no matter what.“How many days is he spending here?” I asked, turning to him.“Just two. Monica, listen to me…”“Alright Dad, I’ve heard you. You want me to find my mate right? I have heard you but hearing you is not the same as agreeing to it. I will think about it and I’m very sure I’m going to succumb to my own decisions so don’t hope on

35MONICA’S POV.There was no way a man would reject a woman who looked as alluring, and vulnerable as I did at that moment. What was my plan? Not much. Just the usual prank stuff. Act like I was scared so I would get to stay in his room. It was a trick I had done countless times and succeeded at.Once the men saw me with my nightgown and nothing else and also looking as scared as hell, they won’t be able to refuse me. I would spend the night there and carry out my pre-planned episodes and of course it would end in making sweet love. Alpha Lucien would not be able to resist me.I bided my plan and waited patiently, glancing at the clock occasionally and waiting for midnight before I did my whole routine of massaging myself with scented oils and mixing perfumes once more.I was going to wake him with the scent of roses. The halls were quiet as I walked through them silently and barefoot, making my way steadily to the guest rooms. Since I had no idea which room he stayed in, I simply ch

36MONICA’S POV.My smile widened as I walked away from the guest rooms. I hadn’t lost. I was winning, because if it took the world to get a man like Lucien, I would give it. I would sincerely apologize to him the next day and act like I didn’t know a thing about seduction. There was no way he would still see me as cheap if that was what he was seeing me as at the moment. He would only think of me as naïve and innocent and that was good for me because men loved the naïve and innocent girls, and it wasn’t my first time playing the naïve and innocent girl just to get what I wanted. The next morning, I woke up with a smile. Instead of the nightmare I had lied to Lucien that I had, I had had a sweet dream where we were holding our very own mating ceremony. The important people in the surrounding Alpha Kingdoms were invited and their daughters gazed at me with jealousy burning deep in their eyes as they watched Lucien mark me as his mate.I hadn’t wanted to open my eyes until light suddenl

37MONICA’S POV.He stared at me unwilling to talk and I raised a brow. I had expected him to be that way. They were always that way whenever I asked them to do stuff that was a little too hard.“Come on sit. I hate staring up at you. You’re too tall.” I told him, pushing a low stool towards him, and he cast a wary eye at it before turning to look at me.“Miss Monica, I…”“Oh, just shut the hell up and sit. Do you really have to make me angry before you do what I want? Sit. I can’t talk to you while you’re standing.” I snapped, sitting in front of him on a higher chair, and he looked at it once more like he was about to be hung on gallows. “Sit!” I said strongly, giving the stool a little push with my foot and he finally sat. “Now we can talk.” I said, and stared at him intently. He pursed his lips slightly before releasing it and looking away.“I have to know where he’s coming from. Tell me. Where the hell is he coming from? I promise your identity will not be revealed so please let’

38MONICA’S POVI stared at those papers with a large smile forming on my face.“I’ll take my leave.” My maid said, bowing low as she exited moved backwards to exit my room..“How… how did you get this?” I asked I’m awe as I turned the papers over.“What can I say? I’m a bit of a genius. I did a little digging and discovered he was a professor. I can use that medium to tell him to tutor you in some subjects, and the rest us up to you.” She told me as she went to sit on my bed.“You knew my plans to get him didn’t work?” I asked, lowering my lashes, and she sighed.“He’s so tough. I could see every attempt you made simply bounced off him like he was a wall. I needed to create more opportunities for you. There is absolutely no way he would reject an offer of teaching you.”“I really hope he doesn’t because I discovered he’s quite different. Mom, he doesn’t see all I do, he’s cold, distant and doesn’t even lust after me.” I explained, going to sit on the bed next to her.“He’s a differen

39LUCIEN’S POVI dressed up as quickly as I could, ready to leave, thinking of Adria. She would be so excited to see me. I could already see her blushing and acting all clumsy just because she was happy. The moon goddess was really a master at fating two people to be mates. I had never met a girl who could make my heart throb the way Adria did. She was different. There was a kind of innocence about her that I didn’t find in any other woman, not even Monica who was pretending to be naïve.She probably thought I didn’t see through her tricks. Of course, she wasn’t the first to use them so it was very obvious. I was glad to be rid of her because it had been tiring being around her. She simply made it all so hard to enjoy my stay.I checked around for my things. I hadn’t packed a lot, just a few shirts and pants. When I was sure I didn’t need any other thing, I left the room assigned to me. The Alpha was already waiting in the receiving room close to the room I was given.“Thank you Luci

40LUCIEN’S POV.I immediately turned back into my house, locking the door. What the hell was Monica doing in my street? How did she get to choose this place in all the unoccupied houses in New Orleans? Then I clenched my fists as I began to suspect it for what it was. It had been planned, and Angelou was definitely in on it. Whether or not she had deliberately made it to New Orleans, I knew she coming to live as a neighbor was definitely deliberate. Did she think I’d ever look at her? Did she think I was going to fall in love with her or pronounce her as my mate if I saw her on a daily basis?I called women like her leeches because they stuck on so hard, refusing to leave unless certain measures were taken against them, and that was very annoying. I thought I had escaped her by leaving her domain, who knew she’d follow me all the way to where I lived?A low snarl left me and I went back out the door, locking it securely. People like her were the type who would happily break into some

127ADRIA’S POV.I took it out, and happiness flooded my heart. The happiness I had felt when I had received it.The fact that those memories could be happy memories that I wanted, brought tears to my eyes. I couldn’t remember. Why? Why was I feeling so happy just by seeing a tumbler? Then, as I kept on studying it. The memory had become clear. Lucien had given me the tumbler. I turned to him wondering why he would give me a tumbler, smiling when we were enemies, and then, I recalled his name. With the recollection of his name, everything suddenly hit me like a blast. I recalled lots of faces, and everything about me. I became myself. How had I lost control, and killed those helpless humans? How?And why was I about to kill Lucien?“Lu… Lucien.” I called, but it was so hard to speak. My throat was dry, and unused. He looked at me with relief, and joy flooding his eyes, and I tried hard not to break down.“Lucien.” I called again, and my breath came out in hitches. My hand found his fa

126LUCIEN’S POV.With the speed of lightning, Adria appeared to me, staring at me, with lasers in her eyes. The wolves made to attack, but I held up my hand once more.“No interruption.” I instructed, and Adria struck, trying to slash my neck, but I dodged, and took hold of her hands, turning her the way I always turned her, whenever we fought.“Adria!” I called, but she easily broke out of the lock I had her in, and managed to slash my right arm.It was a deep gash, but that did nothing to me. I was already healing. She thrusted, and I parried. We carried on with that pattern for a long time because I didn’t wish to hurt her, but she became even more violent.“Adria!” I called once more, but she didn’t budge. She raised her claws to slash my neck, but I bent, and wound my leg around hers. She fell backwards, but made it to her feet quickly in a backward roll. “Adria!” I called again, trying to bring her to her senses, but she was too restless, and too fast.It was obvious she was st

125LUCIEN’S POV.I wasn’t the only one, who felt it. Everyone felt it. The wolves, Lycans, and the vampires too.The odd sensation that filled the air. Like something was coming. They all paused one after the other, looking around. So did the wolves, and the Lycans. And it felt like I already knew what was happening, but was too scared to admit it.The vampires on the right began to part, and about half of them bowed, while the other vampires looked irritated.Out of their midst, on the clear path formed, after they all separated, came Adria. The white dress she was wearing was tattered, and covered in blood, but that did nothing to diminish the aura around her, and it didn’t stop her from being beautiful. She walked confidently with her eyes red, and flaming. Her dark claws were out, and longer than I remembered. They looked like they could claw out the human heart in a matter of seconds. It felt like she commanded the air. It hung around everyone, with a feeling of doom. She had fi

124LUCIEN’S POV.“I’m thinking the same thing as you are.” Zayne said, confirming my suspicions.“You think Adria’s the one behind the missing people?” I asked, looking around for the remote controller.“Exactly what I think, and as for the rebel vampires… We’ve finally heard news of them.” He added, and I stopped my search for the remote controller.Watching news I had missed out on, was no longer important at the moment.“Tell me. What are they planning?” I asked.“They are creating an army large enough to defeat all the wolf clans, and humans, together.” He answered, extending the papers embodying his research.“How is that possible? How big would an army have to be to defeat the wolf clans, and humans alike?” I asked, taking out the papers, and skimming through.“A thorough investigation has been done. They’ve sought for vampires all over, and they’ve also turned some humans who have a strong will to kill. As we speak, they’re getting stronger in numbers, and enslaving the vampir

123ADRIA’S POV.I was being sincere. I was tired of fighting, and fighting endlessly. Before it ended in the death of one of us accidentally, I wanted him to close his eyes, and kill me.That was the solution we’d been ignoring. He didn’t want to kill me, with his hands, so he’d been avoiding it.“You’re someone I know as brave. It’ll be over very soon. I’ll rise again, and even if I forget you, my heart won’t forget the face it beats for. When I come to terms with who I am, and accept that I love you, things will be alright again, so please, Lucien. Please…” I begged, still holding his hand to my neck, but he withdrew it, and sighed.“How do you expect me to kill you with my hands…?”“Just do it! Do it! I’m sick of our clashes repeating itself over, and over. Aren’t you sick of it too?” I asked, getting to my feet, and looking at him straight in the eye.“Damn, Adria. We need to think.” He said, placing his hands on the wall next to him, and bowing his head.“We’ve done all the thin

122ADRIA’S POV.I felt sad, and distraught. What thick darkness was threatening to cover our light?Athena went back to tending to Lucien’s arm, and I watched her.“So, what have you come here for?” She asked softly, dabbing ointment on the wound.“Um… we keep on fighting each other. I’m a vampire, and he’s a werewolf.” I replied, watching her intently.“Of course, you keep on fighting each other more than the average wolf, and vampire would fight.” She replied, dropping the wool, and ointment.“Why?” I asked, and she got up from her stool, placing a hand on Lucien’s shoulder, and holding his arm with the other.“Because you both are the strongest of your species.” She replied, setting Lucien’s arm straight, in a single motion.Lucien didn’t make a noise, but the way he squeezed up his face, and looked away, suggested that it had hurt.“What a fine young man.” Athena replied, and moved to me, starting with my head. “You’re the daughter of the vampire Queen. A pure-blooded vampire, an

121ADRIA’S POV.Hope flooded my heart like never before, and we began to make our way, towards the shore. Lucien still couldn’t move his arm, so I had to take him all the way out of the water. Finally, I got out of the water, and pulled him out too.We panted hard, and looked at each other, with sparkling eyes.It had been done. We had survived it. At least that was if there were no more obstacles for us, on the way to Athena’s house.“I think we made it. Athena will grant us a safe path home, after she answers our questions. Lucien! We actually made it!” I squealed, and threw my arms around him.“It’s still too early to celebrate. Let’s get there first.” He replied, stiffly, and I immediately withdrew from him.His shoulder was swollen.“Lucien, did you…?” I was asking, and he began to walk away.“It’s not my first time having a dislocated shoulder. It’s fine. I’ll set it straight.” He replied, dragging himself, tiredly.“Hey. You… you shouldn’t have… you shouldn’t have covered for

120ADRIA’S POV.Fear gripped me hard in my chest, as I watched the large creature. Never, in my life, had I ever seen a creature as large as that. The worst thing about the giant octopus was that it seemed to have eyes everywhere on its body.“Damn.” Lucien muttered, and immediately turned around, pulling me with him. “Swim.”I began to swim, but it was hard. Already, my stomach hurt. The leaves, and cloth Lucien had used to cover my wounds had slipped off, and I wasn’t supposed to be in water, with such a would.Swimming forward was our only option because the water didn’t let us get anywhere near the shore.Just then, a large tentacle landed right between Lucien and me, with a large splash, and we were both driven apart by the force of it.I landed on another tentacle, and my heart threatened to burst out.“Adria! Use your claws!” Lucien said, as I began to rise out of his reach. I got up from the slowly rising tentacle, and tried to jump down, but another tentacle caught me, and w

119LUCIEN’S POV.Things were beginning to get worse. I didn’t know if we could outrun eagles when we were running at human speed, and I feared greatly for Adria who was injured.“Let’s run!” I whispered frantically, even though the eagles didn’t need to hear us to chase us.We began to run, and she winced continuously as she did. Honestly, I was also scared. Not just for myself, but for her. Even though I had promised her mother that I’d bring her back safely, the thing that scared me most was losing her. When she had been dying from my slash the other time, it had felt like the whole journey had ended, and I had lost her, but thankfully, I was able to save her.“Can you run? Will you get on my back?” I asked, holding her hand, tightly.“No, I would rather not slow you down. Besides, if those eagles sweep down low, I’ll be injured first.” She teased, and we continued to run. It was harder because we had to climb, though.Had it been on level ground, we could have been a bit faster. T
