HAZEL

Just as the moment between us got intense, that stupid rat bit my leg! I screamed and jumped up so fast I nearly hit my head on the ceiling. Darryl jumped up too, looking ready to fight.

"Ouch! That little monster bit me!" I yelled, rubbing my leg.

"I'm going to kill that rat," Darryl said, his eyes scanning the room. He looked so serious about it that I couldn't help but laugh.

What happened next was like something out of a comedy. Darryl was crawling around on his hands and knees, looking under furniture for a tiny rat. I stood on the bed, not wanting to get bitten again.

"There it is!" I pointed at a shadow moving behind some boxes. Darryl lunged, but the rat was faster. He ended up face-first in a pile of old blankets.

"For a mighty Alpha werewolf, you're not very good at catching rats," I laughed. He shot me a playful glare.

"Oh yeah? Let's see you do better!" He stood up, crossing his arms.

I tried to use my new super-senses to track the rat. I closed my eyes and focused r

HAZEL I sat in the dark room, my heart pounding against my ribs. They'd thrown me in here what felt like hours ago. No windows, just thick concrete walls and a heavy metal door. All I could think about was Darryl lying unconscious on the cabin floor, that purple poison running through his veins.I stood up, determined to find a way out. I had to get to him. Just as I reached for the door, it burst open, slamming against the wall. Two guards rushed in, pushing me back into the room. Katrina sauntered in after them, dragging Amy with her. My stomach dropped when I saw Amy's state – fresh bruises bloomed across her face, and blood trickled from her split lip."Look who I found trying to run away from the pack," Katrina said, shoving Amy to the ground."Amy!" I tried to run to her, but the guards held me back.Amy looked up at me, her eyes full of tears. "I'm sorry, Hazel. I tried to help, but—" She broke off with a cry as Katrina kicked her."Stop it!" I shouted, struggling against the

HAZELI stood in the darkness, my mind still reeling from Katrina's revelations. My feet started moving toward Darryl's hideout, but I stopped abruptly. If what she'd shown me was true, if Darryl really was that violent beast in the videos... I couldn't risk being anywhere near him.The thought of those missing girlfriends made my stomach churn. How many had there been? What had really happened to them? The Darryl I knew seemed so different from the monster in those videos, but maybe that's exactly what those other girls had thought too, right before they disappeared.Home. It was the only place left, but even that felt impossible. Dad had been calling non-stop for five days, probably had the entire police force looking for me. What would I even say to him? Sorry I disappeared, by the way, I'm some kind of supernatural creature called a Golden Wolf? Yeah, that would go well. But then again, maybe he already knew. Those silver bullets in his study weren't there by accident. He'd been

Hazel I opened my mouth, trying to find the right words to explain Darryl's absence without revealing anything supernatural. My mind raced through possible excuses, each sounding more ridiculous than the last. Just as I was about to sputter some nonsense, Lucian's phone pinged."Hold that thought," he said, reaching for his phone. "Let me check this real quick."I waited, grateful for the interruption. My heart was still pounding from nearly having to explain everything about Darryl, the wolves, and why I was really here."Who is it?" I asked, trying to sound as casual as possible."Actually, it's Darryl," Lucian replied, his eyes scanning the screen."What?" I nearly choked on my coffee. "Darryl?"Lucian nodded, still reading the message. "Yeah, he's asking about football practice. Says 'How far, man? Are you coming for practice today at school? I've been practicing.'"He turned to me, his eyebrows raised. "Is this what you've been hiding? That he's been having private practice sess

HAZELI woke up to sunlight streaming through the curtains of Lucian's guest room. Two days I'd been here, hiding from everything - from Darryl, from Katrina, from my dad and from what I'd become. The soft mattress had become my sanctuary, but even that couldn't keep the world at bay forever.A car engine rumbled in the driveway and the sound got louder as it approached. My heart jumped - were Lucian's parents back early? I swung my legs out of bed and walked out of the room, ready to call out to him."Lucian, I think your parents are-" The words died in my throat as the engine's distinctive sound registered in my brain. That wasn't just any car. That was a police cruiser. My father's cruiser."No," I whispered, scrambling to the window. Sure enough, there was my dad's patrol car, and there he was, stepping out in his crisp uniform like he was every inch the authoritative mayor and police chief he was."Lucian!" I screamed, panic making my voice crack. "LUCIAN!"He appeared in the doo

HAZELI stared at the photo of Darryl and me running through the woods. My dad was waiting for an answer, but my mind went blank."I... I can't explain," I finally said."Can't or won't?" Dad's voice was sharp."Both." I crossed my arms, anger suddenly rising in my chest. "Maybe if you'd told me the truth about everything, I wouldn't have been running at all!"Dad's face went pale. "What are you talking about?""Oh, I don't know," I said, my voice getting louder. "Maybe the silver bullets in your study? The weird rules? All the secrets you've been keeping from me my whole life?""Hazel-" he started, but I was on a roll now."No! You don't get to act worried now. Not when you've been lying to me forever!" I grabbed one of the photos and waved it in his face. "You want to know what happened that night? Fine! I was-"The sharp blast of Dad's police radio cut me off. "All units, we've found something. Any available officers respond immediately."Dad's face changed instantly from concerned

HAZELMy hands trembled as I opened Mom's journal. The pages were worn and yellowed, filled with her familiar handwriting. What I read next made my world spin."My dearest Hazel," the first entry began, "There's so much I need to tell you about who you really are, about your true father, about everything. I pray you never have to read this, that I can tell you myself when you're old enough. But if you're reading this now, it means I'm gone, and you deserve to know the truth."I sank to the floor, clutching the journal as I read on. Mom wrote about how she used to be a werewolf hunter, from a long line of hunters. Then she met him - a rogue alpha werewolf named Marcus. Despite everything she'd been taught about werewolves being monsters, she fell in love with him."It was forbidden," she wrote. "A hunter and a werewolf. But we couldn't help ourselves. We became mates, and soon after, I was pregnant with you."Tears blurred my vision as I read about how terrified she'd been. Marcus had

HAZELI watched helplessly as the police car carrying Darryl disappeared around the corner. My feet felt rooted to the ground, Mom's journal still clutched tightly to my chest. A group of girls had gathered nearby, their excited whispers carrying across the parking lot."What happened?" I asked as I approached them, my voice shaking. "Why did they arrest Darryl?"Sarah Martinez, a girl from my Chemistry class, turned to me with wide eyes. "You haven't heard? They're saying he's responsible for all those missing girlfriends!""What missing girlfriends?" The words came out barely above a whisper."All his former girlfriends," another girl chimed in. "They never found their bodies. It wasn't just mysterious disappearances - they're saying Darryl killed them all!"My stomach churned as the girls continued talking, their voices growing more animated with each detail. "Can you imagine?" one said. "How brutal do you have to be to kill all your girlfriends one by one?"My mind raced back to m

You, my daughter who prefers staying home even when bored, suddenly wanting to tag along? Did you really think you could play your own father?"He stepped closer, his police chief demeanor replacing any trace of fatherly affection. "I left you in my office and deliberately left my camera running because, quite frankly, you aren't to be trusted.""I'm to be trusted!" I protested. "But I couldn't allow—"His laugh was cold. "It looks like you were trying to protect him. Am I wrong?"I didn't answer. I couldn't.His voice rose, filling the small office. "Hazel, do you understand what you've done? Do you even realize how serious this is? That shirt was evidence! It's the centerpiece of this entire case!"My hands shook as I tried to defend Darryl. "He isn't a killer, Dad! I swear! You're wrong about him!"Dad's expression harde

HAZELI stiffened in surprise as Lucian's arms wrapped around me in an unexpected hug. The gesture felt oddly intimate, and I had to force myself not to pull away too abruptly. "Okay, okay," I laughed awkwardly, gently pulling away. "What was that for?"Lucian ran a hand through his hair, looking slightly embarrassed. "Sorry, I just... I'm really glad you're letting me help. I know things have been... weird lately.""Weird is an understatement," I muttered, gesturing for him to follow me up the path. As we walked, I noticed how his eyes scanned the surroundings, taking in every detail of the heavily wooded area. He moved with an odd familiarity, like he knew exactly where to step to avoid the muddy patches."Have you been here before?" I asked, trying to keep my voice casual."What? No," he answered quickly. "Just good at reading terrain, I guess. All those camping trips with my dad."I raised an eyebrow. "Since when do you go camping?""There's a lot you don't know about me, Hazel,"

HAZEL POVI looked at each of them one by one, taking in their predatory stances and expressions. Five massive werewolves plus Katrina - not great odds, but I wasn't about to show fear."You want me to reject Darryl?" I asked, keeping my voice light. "Why didn't you just say so? I'm totally ready to do that."Katrina's smile made my stomach turn. "Really? Just like that?""Just like that." I gave her my best innocent look. "How exactly do I do it? Is there like a special werewolf ceremony or something?""It's simple," Katrina said, clearly enjoying herself. "You just say 'I' followed by your full name, then 'reject Darryl Hale as my future alpha and mate.'""Oh, that's easy enough!" I took a deep breath as I made a show of preparing myself. "I, Hazel... um, wait." I furrowed my brow in fake confusion. "What's my surname again? All this stress has made me so forgetful."One of Katrina's goons growled. "Are you playing with us?""No, no!" I held up my hands. "I genuinely forgot. Help me

HAZELAmy's eyes widened as she realized what she'd just said. "I mean... I don't really know much about Maria Chen or her sister. It was before my time at school. I just remember hearing whispers about it, you know how people talk..."I leaned forward, my heart racing. "Amy, please. Anything you remember could help."She twisted her hands in her lap, looking uncomfortable. "It's all just rumors, really. They say Gracia was really popular, kind of like Katrina is now. She dated Darryl briefly when they were freshmen, and then..." She trailed off, shrugging helplessly. "She disappeared. They found her body in the woods a few weeks later.""And Maria? What happened to her?""She was only in elementary school when it happened. Their parents... they couldn't handle it. Sent Maria to live with relatives for a while. She just started here this year." Amy glanced around the cafeteria nervously. "That's all I know, I swear."I sat back, my mind spinning. Maria – she must know something. The w

HAZEL POVI burst into the classroom, already forming an apology to Mr. Thompson in my head, only to stop dead in my tracks. Instead of his familiar face, Mrs. Parker stood at the front of the room, her steel-rimmed glasses perched precariously on her nose."Miss LièRén," she said, drawing out each syllable. "How late of you again."My cheeks burned as every head in the class turned toward me. I'd rushed to Mr. Thompson's office first thing this morning, those damning photographs burning a hole in my bag, only to find his office dark and empty."I'm sorry, Mrs. Parker. I thought we had—""History?" She arched an eyebrow. "Mr. Thompson called in sick today. Though I must say, your attendance record lately has been... concerning." She consulted a sheet on her desk. "Three absences last week, and late twice this week already."I shifted uncomfortably, aware of the weight of those photographs in my bag. How could I explain that I was trying to prove my werewolf mate wasn't a serial killer

HAZELThe streetlights were just beginning to fade when I pulled into the police station parking lot at 6:45 AM. The morning air was crisp, and wisps of fog curled around the few cars scattered across the lot. Most of them I recognized – my father's cruiser wasn't among them, thank goodness. My footsteps echoed through the empty corridor as I made my way to my father's office. Officer Sarah had texted that she'd meet me there, but for now, the station felt eerily quiet. Most officers wouldn't arrive for another hour, giving us the privacy we needed to review the case.I was about to sit on one of the hard plastic chairs outside my father's office when voices drifted through the partially open door. I froze, recognizing my father's voice among them."The evidence you brought us was crucial," he was saying. "Without those photographs, we might never have built a strong enough case.""I just did what needed to be done," a familiar voice responded, though I couldn't quite place it. "He ha

HAZELAmy and I burst through the hospital doors, slightly out of breath from running. The lights over everything, made the white walls seem even more sterile and uninviting."Are you sure about this?" I asked Amy as we hurried down the corridor. "Even if Jake says Darryl didn't attack him, how does that prove anything about the other girls?"Amy grabbed my arm, forcing me to stop. "Don't you see? If Jake confirms Darryl didn't hurt him, it shows there's reasonable doubt. The police built their whole case on the pattern of violence, starting with Jake's attack."I shook my head. "That's a pretty big maybe, Amy.""It's better than nothing," she insisted. "And right now, nothing is all Darryl has."We reached Jake's room - Room 342. I remembered it clearly from my last visit, when he'd been lying there unconscious, machines beeping steadily around him. But now...The room was empty. The bed was stripped bare and the machines were silent."This can't be right," I muttered, double-checkin

HAZEL POV"Amy?" I whispered, still trying to catch my breath. "What are you doing here? How did you—" I stopped mid-sentence, taking in her appearance. The bruises I remembered were gone, and there was a newfound strength in her stance. She didn't look like the broken omega I'd left behind."Shh," she pressed her finger to her lips again, glancing nervously toward the stairwell where Lucian and Katrina's voices still drifted up. "Not here. We need to be careful."I grabbed her arm, needing to know she was real. "But... you were chained up. I saw you. How did you escape?"A small smile played across her lips. "I didn't escape," she whispered. "Darryl freed me.""What?" The word came out louder than I intended, and Amy quickly shushed me again. "That's impossible," I continued in a lower voice. "Darryl was... he was..." I thought of him lying on the cabin floor, convulsing from Katrina's wolfsbane."He came for you," Amy said softly. "Hazel, he was barely alive when he found me. Whatev

The hallway felt longer than usual because Everything looked different now that I knew the truth about this town. Had the school always harbored so many secrets, or was I just now beginning to see them?I stopped at his door, my hand hovering over the handle. Through the frosted glass, I could see his silhouette moving about the room. Taking a deep breath, I knocked."Come in," his familiar voice called out.I pushed the door open, stepping into the cramped office filled with towering bookshelves and the scent of old paper. Mr. Thompson sat behind his desk, not looking up from the papers he was grading."I don't recall assigning any—" he began, then stopped abruptly as he finally looked up. His eyes immediately went to my neck, where my silver necklace usually rested. The necklace that was now absent."Well," he said softly, setting down his red pen. "This is unexpected.""Is it?" I chal

HAZELJared stood there with his eyes wide with shock. He looked from the journal in my hand to my face, then back again. He opened his mouth, then closed it as if he couldn’t find the words.“Where… where did you get that?” he finally managed to stammer.I tilted my head. “Is that what you should be asking right now?” I asked. “Dad… no, Jared… you’ve kept secrets from me for years. About who I am. Both you and Mom.” My voice started to tremble, and tears welled up in my eyes. I blinked them back, but more kept coming. “You kept secrets,” I repeated, my voice cracking. “Why?”He took a step back, bumping into his counter. He put his hands on the edge of the counter, gripping it tightly as he looked down at the floor. “Hazel…” he started, then stopped as he shook his head slowly.“Why?” I asked again, my voice rising. Tears streamed down my face now. I wiped at them with the back of my hand, but they kept falling again. “Why did you lie to me? Why did you keep all of this from me?”He
