“Nani ga okotte iru no ka,” A woman with icy white hair asked her husband as she stared into the burning building that stood not so far from them. The flames that leaped off the building, giving their all with pirouetting sparks and crackles warned the woman that danger might be close. She looked down at her son and proceeded to unsheathe the katana that dangled by her hips. “They have found us!”

Her husband, an Asian American man who looked thirty and had platinum blonde hair similar to his wife however remained calm. His hands were wrapped tightly on a katana that hanged around his waist but he continued to observe. The packhouse was desolate. Someone had arrived and attacked before their arrival. While it was in his nature to believe that the Crow pack had been attacked because the information had reached the wrong ears that three relics would be seeking asylum in Crow territory, the man’s mind r

DAVID “What happened exactly?” I asked as I observed the human girl resting on the king-sized bed. She reeked of magic. A disturbing kind that made me suspect there was the involvement of root magic. Elder Quentin must have sensed it too. Because all he did was chant a warding incantation. Witches of the Primrose dabbled in leaf and branch magic. It was safe and the consequences of those spells were minimal. Root magic however was a different subject matter on its own. It was far dangerous, super complicated and there were tons of consequences if one was willing to pay the price. My family, the Blossoms dabbled in every art of magic. It was one of the reasons why I was potentially the only surviving member of the household. Even while being affiliated to the Primrose, I knew very well many in the family did not practice what was taught in the church so the lingering stench of root magic strengthened my hypothesis. This had to be the handiwork of Candice,

1350 word(s) Published DAVID Witches were not true immortals so they followed the cycle of life. There was a time to be born, a period of growth, and the climactic finale, death. I was very content with the life I was given. I had chosen to make the most out of it. I did not mind that the first man I loved would have to see me die. It did not bother me but my free-spirited nature disturbed Candice greatly. She could not comprehend why I would want to lose everything just before I had it. So my elder sister was inclined to make sure I made no reckless decision like outgrow her and her way of going about it was murdering my boyfriend and feeding me his heart against my will. “What was his name again?” C

TWENTY-SEVEN YEARS AGO Candice stood by the counter table chopping up onions and tomatoes in preparation for dinner. The aroma stung but her eyes did not water. She cut with precision. Each swift snip of the knife in her hand implied that she was mad at something. Anger tightened her stomach once the entire bulb had been chopped. Candice proceeded to pour the minced pieces into the boiling broth. As she poured the vegetables into the hot broth, a knock resonated from where she stood. A smile made its way to her straight face like she had been expecting someone. A lover perhaps. “You are late,” Candice said in a soft voice as she brushed away moist hair sticking to her skin. “David went out. If you ask me, he was mad. I think he believed you stood him up.” The visitor was appalled by her statement. “What? Of course not, I love David. I would never do anything to hurt him.” Candice took a long

OLAMIDE It was difficult to take in air. It was as if something had been stuffed in the depth of my nostrils. There was a hand pressing hard on my forehead and someone was holding my right hand, rubbing at them like they were trying to pacify someone or perhaps themselves. A thousand frantic thoughts dashed through my mind in the space of a single heartbeat as I roused. What happened? The last thing I remembered before I blacked out was talking to Satake while I planned to elope. Then the next minute, It was as if my body went up in flames. "Olamide..." A familiar voice whispered to me. It sounded like that

DAVIDPulling off a chill demeanor was near impossible but I did my best to conceal any cracks in my act. I certainly could not let them know. Telling Elder Quentin would mean Satake would get to know, then all things were sure to go to hell then. The Alphas of the Crow pack did not know I existed and that was a good thing because who knew what would have become of me. I needed to keep things that way. If the Primrose elder knew, Jason would hear of it. The man was frightened of Jason and the reason beat me because Elder Quentin was an old one. He knew tremendous spells. They could not be as great as the ones my family had gathered over the years but he had experience and powers beyond my imagination. I believed if the elder wanted to, he, along with the other court elders could wage a war against the high and mighty werewolves. There would be casualties but the witch kind would have victory. I was certain of it.

OLAMIDE "Jason made no mention of it." I disclosed, looking into Satake's eyes for a split second. "It's because he doesn't trust me, right?" "I don't think so," Satake replied. "If Jason didn't trust you, he would have marked the night the goddess made you his true mate. He still hasn't. That speaks in volumes." "So you are saying he trusts me?" "That is an over-reach. You have been with him. He is difficult and has serious trust issues but with you, Jason is in the middle and most of it has to do with the fact that you are his mate. You... fascinate him." I likened Jason's fascination to a wolf when they had a first-time interaction with humans. They were wary and less aggressive. It was almost cute to think about if Jason was not a murderer with serious psychological issues. My brain did a playback on everything that has occurred this night. From suspicions of my br

He inhaled. Exhaled. And repeat. Satake stepped out of the doors of the De'crescent hotel and stalked his way down to his motorcycle. The cool evening breeze seemed to soothe his catastrophic mind. He had always been a man attuned to all his senses but as he saddled on his helmet, Satake's mind was attuned to all but one. He couldn't get his mind to forget what that warlock has said. All he could see was that disappointed expression on that charmingly handsome face. "Witchphobic..." Isaac had accused but he truly knew nothing of what Satake had endured in the hands of a particular witch. He had managed to conceal it while they had worked their little spells but something sinister within him cursed Satake for letting him go. That little voice at the back of his head wanted to gut them and watched them struggle and wither away just like his parents had that unfortunate night. And the strange thing was Satake almost succumbed. His wo

One might wonder why a little boy was unfazed by the death of his father. Especially when the man is someone you have looked up to all your life. Little Satake watched his father succumb to the gash the battle-ax had caused him. As a thick crimson liquid coated the floor Chase had slumped on, Satake watched in horror as his father slowly breathe his last. Any other child would have been driven to a frenzy of madness. But for Satake, this was no different from a regular day and this was definitely not the first time the young child had seen someone die. A week before, it has been someone his age. His mother had indoctrinated in his mind as a young child that death was inevitable. As individuals with coveted abilities, they would be hunted and if be to the point of extinction, then so be it. "No," Satake heard his mom shout, her eyes were glazed with fury. His mother had abandoned the one rule she had instilled in his head since he could understand basic h

Olamide walked out of the Crimson lane house unscathed. Witches and warlocks from the Primrose coven gathered around the house with the sole aim of retrieving Yasmin Maplewood. Olamide locked her arms with her brother as the Primrose coven witches surrounded them. Yasmin didn't resist arrest. Jason handed her over to the eldest member and watched as the aged warlock slapped handcuffs engraved with various sigils to Yasmin's open hands. The sigils glowed brilliant green as they clasped shut. "What happens to her?" Jason demanded."She will be tried by the high courts. Her powers will be stripped and she will be jailed for a very long time. I can however assure you that Ginger Maplewood will not know the pain of losing her mother. The Primrose coven will do its best to protect her." Olamide's eyes drifted from the conversing supernaturals. Far from where she stood, She noticed Sofiane walking towards an almost totaled car. In his hands was the limp body of David

Only you have the power to save them... a sweet voice reminded me...Save them allThe memory of my mother reared up before me, so intense that for a minute the greens of the forest plundered in my vision, the image of it transposed over the frozen horror to come. I smelled the rain, felt the coolness of fresh air running through my face and hair. I remembered the feats my mother has performed with her gifts, the stance she took when she chose to heal ravaged the recesses of my mind. The bearing of her breath in the cold night when she helped dying animals and plants, the isolated moment I saw her drain ichor from a coyote that stole her goats. The sigil atop my palm glowed hot and sang to every memory. And finally, I understood what the power my mother had left in my protection did. What it meant and why it was converted by many. All that power resided in me to create balance and the frozen picture before was not harmony. Single stran

"Don't do this..." Lilith pleaded. "I love you Mamu."Deji pulled his sister close as Lilith spewed that blasphemy. His brows jerked high as he silently implored how the vampire countess could tell herself such a lie. "And you love me too." Lilith insisted. “I know you do. Just hand over the girl. Give her to me Mamu. I will forgive you.”“Shut it!” Deji slammed, pulling his sister even closer. "You do not get to tell me what to do anymore."“When...” Lilith for the first time faltered. Her attention left Deji and lingered on Jason. She remembered those black smokes that shot out of his hands. It took that little for her to come to a conclusion. With a splay of hands, she picked the Alpha from the floor causing Yasmin to retrace her steps from the Relic–Alpha duo. "This all started when your so-called gifts hit him. What the fuck did you do?" The look in her eyes was clearly maniacal. Her irises were crimson red and the white parts were oily orange. Veins of

JASON There was something truly horrific about watching your allies die. Even the volatile ones. As David dropped to the floor with petrified eyes, my heart skipped a beat because his death was more than losing an ally. Our lives were on the line. Seconds trickled by. It turned to minutes but the worst had yet to happen. I took one good look at myself then at Sofiane. We were still very much alive. I wasn't even sure what to believe anymore but one thing was painfully clear, I was terrified. I hated to admit it but for the first time in a long time, dying scared me. Lilith licked her bloody fingers and let out a maniacal laugh. "How unfortunate," She said, her eyes sewn onto the body on the floor. "He broke the spell before he died. How noble." Did that make things better or worse, I pondered. I reckoned with the latter because, in all honesty, I expected nothing but the worst from the now late surviving Bloss

Yasmin continued to slice onto Satake Crow's skin, ignoring his screams for help and the obvious opposition that has managed to sneak past a coven of vampires and her maze of chaos. Crimson blanketed over her hands reminding her she was executing a sin. A moment of relapse causes her to look back into the eyes of the dying relic. She could tell he was begging for mercy even when his mouth couldn't move. "You have come too far," Yasmin told herself. "You can't back out now." The witch reminded herself that Lilith would have the intruders cornered in no time. The scythe sliced through Satake's flesh and bones like it were butter and soon, Yasmin noticed his beating heart. She spared Lilith a look for security. The countess of death had her hands on the now unconscious attribute's throat. Her eyes however were not on the Aloha werewolves who had broken in. Her gaze lingered on the vampire she had sired as he too was unconscious. The bright side to things though was that Lil

She looked familiar to Deji. As he strained his eyes through the window of the girl's apartment, a spark burned bright in his mind. This was the human girl bound to the chair. Why, he wondered. One she remembered like yesterday. The night it all went to hell. "Why am I here?" Candice asked herself. Her lips weren't moving. Neither did she have control over her legs. In fact, the only thing she had power over was her sight and all she could do was continue to watch as her legs jogged into a clearing. There was a man slumped to the floor. A woman was above him.

JASONSofiane pulled open the gates and we slipped in, breaking off leaves and stumbling over a low ground shrub but managing to step high and land on a cobblestone pathway that we followed toward the side of the property. The night was opaque and sheltered amid the vines and overgrowth, but the moon was still very bright and that gave us werewolves an advantage. If we stepped out into the open, we would be noticed. The expanse was crammed with long teeth. With a stake in one hand, I darted aside a long, hanging vine heavy with flowers and crept close to the finewood-sided house. I signaled to Sofiane and he nodded in understanding before disappearing to the back. If he entered through the rear, we would find each other inside. So that left me with David. Tilting my head into one of the walls, I listened, honing my senses toward the house and beyond the walls.A scream alerted me. It sounded like Satake and I fucking lost it! I was about to burst through a dust

Satake woke in a standing position. Except his feet were barely touching the floor. Head bowed forward, the muscles in his body twanged. Something was banded across his chest. A crest of some sort and it stung. His body felt numb. Especially his back region. He tried to move only to realize that his arms were wrenched above him, his wrists hemmed together. He wriggled but couldn’t move much. The air around him was musty with a lingering scent of blood.Flickering his eyes a hundred times to adjust to the darkness, Satake came to be fully awake. He tried to talk but he could only wince as a sharp pain shot up his body. His jaw was messed up. His foggy memories were beginning to prop up. He had remembered resisting after that damn witch had attacked him with a cursed weapon. He also vividly remembered being driven to unconsciousness by one of her vampire pals. His sight cleared slowly and in time Satake came to realize he was in someone's living room. There were rugs rolled up to a
