Kane's POV “What are we going to do with this lot?” I ask Jackson. We look out over the sea of humans, tied together with a collection of ropes and chains Drummond had gathered for us -- anything we could find to stop them from wandering off into the human territories and raising questions. All of them are in a frenzy, screeching and pulling at their restraints, trying their best to get away from whatever it is they are seeing. “I don’t know,” Jackson says. “We can’t bring them with us, we can’t let them go.” “We can’t kill them,” I say. “Why not?” Zael asks me out of nowhere. I’m slowly getting used to the vampire’s sudden appearance, but I don’t think it will ever stop annoying me. “They are helpless. There’s no honour in killing a lame animal.” “Werewolves and their honour,” Alhora says, landing next to Zael. “You were supposed to stay with Adare,” I growl at her. “Why? Willow is with him.” “She is hurt, she can’t--” Alhora waves her hand in the air, silencing me. “I gav
Kane's POVIt’s almost dawn by the time I make it back to the apartment, but there’s no rest for me yet. Zael is waiting for me right outside the door to my office. I cock my head in his direction and unlock the door, noting the way my hand shakes when I punch in the code. I need to get some rest. The vampire reeks of human blood, soot, and charred flesh, the combination of it forcing bile up my throat as he walks past me. “How did it go?” I ask and I close the door behind him.“As well as can be expected. We were fast about it. They didn’t suffer…much. What are your plans with that pope of theirs?”“I don’t know yet. Interrogate then execute.”“He will not talk.”“I’m not so sure about that. Willow has ways to make people talk.”Zael nods and folds his hands in front of him. Ordinarily, I’d invite him to sit down, but his clothes are covered in a thin layer of burnt human fat, and the thought of getting that all over my furniture is just a little more than I can bear right now. “You
Kane's POVPatrick leaves a few minutes later. He is in a great mood, and why wouldn’t he be. He’s finally one of us, and he can openly become part of the tribe, instead of hiding from us every full moon. I have to admit that I look forward to running with him.“Kane?” Willow asks. I still haven’t moved from my spot on the floor. “Are you okay?”“No,” I say. “I’m fucking tired.” I look up at her. “Where’s Adare?”“He’s asleep.”I nod. “The first shift will do that.”She kneels next to me. Her fear matches mine. Neither of us have any idea what we’re supposed to do, how to handle our very special child.I had all sorts of romantic notions about his first shift. I used to think about it all the time, and I looked forward to helping him through that all-important first shift. It’s a special time between father and son, and now it’s been ripped away from me. It hurts more than I thought it would. I keep telling myself it’s just a shift, it’s not that important, but it doesn’t help.Willow
I don’t want to cry in front of Kane. Not again. I’ve caused him too much sorrow already. So I run from the apartment before I lose complete control of my emotions. I try, and fail, to put up my defences, but Kane doesn’t come after me, which I really appreciate, because I need to be alone right now. When I reach the stairs, my legs give out, and I sink to the floor, dropping my head to my knees, I sob uncontrollably for several minutes. It's all just too much: Lester, Innocent, the dead Templars, my son...my poor little boy with his terrible burden. “Queen,” Arlene asks, and puts her hand on my shoulder. “Should I fetch the king?”“No,” I sniff. “No, I’m fine.”She sits next to me, as she did the night they freed me from The Templars, and puts her arm around my shoulders. “I understand. The heart of a woman…they try, bless them, but our mates are just men. How can they know what it’s like to be a she-wolf?”I don’t answer her. Kane, I think, has a remarkable understanding of my heart
Kane's POV I wake up several hours later from Adare’s screaming. I am still tired, but I feel much better, and my mind is clearer. “Come on big boy,” I lean over the cot and pick him up. “It’s not that bad, is it? I bet you’re hungry, hm? In need of some meat?” I don’t know what else to do, other than to treat this as I would a normal first shift. Luckily, he’s been on solids for a while, so giving him proper meat shouldn't be too much of a problem. I deposit the pup in his high chair and get a bottle from the fridge. Adare stops crying, watching me with curious eyes as I quickly warm the bottle and hand it to him. “Why don’t you snack on that while I cook you something?” He gives me a wide smile, revealing two bottom teeth that weren’t there before. My best guess is that they popped through because of the shift. Smiling back and babbling like a maniac, I pull some ground beef from the fridge and drop it in a pan. Adare’s eyes flash green when he smells the meat, and he lets out
I lift my eyes just in time to see Justine sneaking into the living room with Adare on her hip. I lightly shake my head at her, and she quickly retreats to the bedroom. I am still busy wondering why I didn’t know my mother was here sooner, why my intuition didn’t let me know that something was off when Glenn and Jackson slip into the living room. I’m immensely relieved to see them. Anxiously, I wait for them to shift, but they don’t. Instead, they pull firearms, shooting the three humans surrounding my mother, putting them down with deadly accuracy. Kane reflexively grabs me and pulls me to the ground, shielding me with his body. The protection spell I cast isn’t very strong, and it’s already crumbling. “Something’s wrong with my magic,” I say. “Something’s sucking up my energy.” “Your mother,” he says. Before we can get up to confront her, more Templars fall out of the hole. Glenn and Jackson shoot them just as quickly as they shot the first two. “This isn’t right,” Kane says th
Kane's POV Adare lies with his head on my shoulder, quietly sobbing, soaking my shirt in his tears. It’s a heartbreaking sound. I cradle him close to my chest while I rock him back and forth, making soft, hushing sounds. “Shh, big boy. It’s okay. Daddy will make it better.” As I watch Willow undress, I heal Adare, allowing the warm white light of my love for my son to wash over him and heal his injuries. He immediately stops crying and sighs softly, going limp in my arm a second later. He goes straight back to sleep as if nothing had happened. He's exhausted, poor guy. “Glenn,” I mind link with my chancellor. “Come get Adare.” I don’t plan to leave Willow alone with The Templar. I have no doubt that she can handle him, but I want to sit here and watch her rip him apart. “What’s going on here?” Glenn asks a few seconds later. “They collared him,” I say and get up to hand the pup over to my chancellor. “Is Tully here?” He nods. “She’s maintaining your spell.” “Good. We’ll be out ju
I find Nicholas kneeling next to Justine’s body, his forehead in the palm of his hand, crying softly – the sound of someone whose heart is genuinely broken. “What am I going to do now?” he asks me through his tears. “You are going to bury her,” I say and crouch next to the boy. “Then you are going to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and go on with life.” “I want to die,” he says. My insides go cold. I loved Justine, but I barely see Nicholas. He’s quiet, a bit of a loner who prefers to keep to himself, but I don’t want to see more of our wolves die. There’s nothing I can do about it though. If he decides he’d rather die, no one can save him, but I have to try. “Do you want to go to the doctor? He can help.” “No. There’s no life for me without her.” “You don’t know that. There may be someone else for you.” He shakes his head. “I don’t think so.” “Willow?” Kane asks in my head. “Are you about ready?” “In a minute,” I reply. I squeeze Nicholas’s shoulder. I have a feeling when
