Once Zoe's father was no more than ashes, she left it there and numbly walked back to the van.

Xavier didn't follow her this time. She half expected him to but didn't wait for him.

Xavier knew that the disappearance of Alpha Peterson would have been noticed by this time. This meant that even if his team had arrived after Zoe and Xavier left and cleaned the crime scene. Peterson's people were going to eventually get worried and start connecting the dots. Which meant that Zoe was not safe anymore.

He wanted to be with her, to be there when she broke apart in her grief. But he knew that she needed some space as well. Also, he wasn't sure how she would react to his help. So far, she had been ignoring him and keeping her distance without a word.

He knew she now knew that they were mates and he had told Spike not to tell her animal that they had known all along but Spike had been overjoyed to meet her animal that he answered her every question truthfully.

    >Xavier took his time cleaning her. She allowed him to rinse every inch of her naked skin. He pooled water from the shower in his hands and let it drip down from her neck to her breasts and down through her belly button. It pained him to see her so unresponsive. But he hoped that she knew that he was not going anywhere now. That he had decided to stay for as long as she needed him to. Everything else and everyone else ceased to matter to him. He was done putting others over her. He was finally going to set his priorities straight and his mate came on top. When he was finally done, he grabbed a towel and wrapped her, gently walking her to the bed. He pulled a simple tee and jeans for her from her wardrobe and she did not resist. She just sat there silently staring into the void. It was a heartbreaking sight. It was like she had lost her fight. She had gone to many lengths for her father. She had faced everyone alone and now she probably felt like the sole reason for her

Angelina looked worriedly around the nearly torn-apart apartment. Angelina stepped closer to Zoe but stopped when she saw Xavier crouching in a corner. She didn't seem to have noticed him earlier and was shocked to find him there."Zoe?" Her voice held a tone of alarm.Xavier slowly stood up. Zoe didn't seem in the right state of mind."Angelina, I am Xavier. There is nothing to worry about." Xavier started but Angelina's alarm and suspicions heightened as she narrowed her eyes, "It doesn't look fine. And, how do you know my name?"She instinctively stepped between Zoe and Xavier. Xavier raised his hands in front of him to show he meant no harm to either of the girls.Angelina noticed Xavier's Blood Crescent cufflinks and narrowed her eyes in suspicion, "If you don't tell me who you are right now, I'll call the cop

He looked at Angelina and told the truth, "Zoe's father is dead."Angelina's face changed so fast. She whirled to face Zoe who had sucked a breath at the mention of her father and was looking at the messed-up floor."Goddess, Zoe, I am so sorry. What happened? How?" Angelina asked the questions to Xavier."Long story." He said with urgency, "Please convince her to come with me. I promise you, there is nowhere safer for her than my side.""Why is her life in danger? What is going on?" Angelina asked getting more worried."Because she," Xavier contemplated the truth. He had no idea if Zoe remembered what Dahlia did. Usually during the first transformations, the animals took full control and the human parts had no memory. But Zoe was not a normal werewolf and he was desperate."Her beast killed the guy who killed her father.

    >Xavier drove for hours before Zoe stirred in the back seat. She had been whispering in her sleep, calling to her Dad, no doubt dreaming of him. It saddened him that she was hurting and he was the reason. He wanted to help but didn't know how. She groggily opened her eyes and looked around to take in her surroundings. She was confused for a second before she recognized Xavier driving and no one else was in the car besides the two of them. She sat straighter. Mixed feelings rose in her. She was confused about their destination. She was obviously still in pain, the tragedy of her father was still too fresh. But at that moment her biggest concern was Xavier."Stop the car." She said. He knew she was awake and was waiting for her to say something but that was not what he was expecting."We are in the middle of nowhere." He told her as calmly as he could muster. He wanted to ask how she was feeling but he felt like she was not going to be in a talkative mood."I said, stop the

    >Zoe got into the driver's seat before Xavier could and started the car as Xavier slid onto the passenger seat. She pressed the gas and their heads hit the headrests due to the sudden speeding of the car. The howls were audible before Xavier could ask what was happening. Xavier had warned that the area was not safe, especially at night. He regretted choosing that path. The alternative was longer and would mean that they would have to show IDs on the border checks between territories. Which would have marked the presence of an Alpha away from home and be seen as suspicious since there was no official business being conducted. This route was through a no man's land littered with rogues. And the rogues had just marked them.Zoe sped up the car. Thankfully they were the only ones crazy enough to be on that road at that time. Soon enough engine sounds added to howls. The rogues were on automobiles too.It took another five minutes, and the rogues were behind them. Their headl

    >They did not stop until Xavier managed to use a backroad to get into the Silver Moon territory without getting recognized. They reached the house around dawn. They hadn't spoken another word to each other after the rogue attack. Zoe didn't sleep. Xavier parked the car in front of Zoe's old home beside the woods but neither attempted to get out of the car. Xavier was waiting for Zoe. He wanted to call ahead to let the housekeeper, Aunt Julie know that Zoe would be paying a visit but everything had happened so fast he had forgotten.Zoe stared at the house. That place held so many memories. Everything seemed so far away now. She felt like she was seeing the place after a century and not just a few months. Despite her heightened senses, everything seemed to have lost its color. Everything seemed dull and dead. There were no flowers in the flowerbeds. The driveway had neither been used nor cleaned in a while. There were vines growing on the roof and hanging here and there.

    >Zoe ran to the woods. She couldn't breathe. Coming back felt like a huge mistake but she had nowhere else to go. How was she going to cope? The woods hadn't changed at all. But the smells and sounds were different. It felt like all her life she had been going everywhere with a veil on her senses and it had been finally lifted. She was experiencing the world anew.Usually she let herself go senseless in the woods until she was too tired to run anymore and then find her way back. This time she was not the easily-tired wolfless girl. She had a beast inside her and the breast needed to be let out. The beast directed her to the same clearing which had become Zoe's mind space where she had met Dahlia for the first time. 'You will eventually have to face everything, Zoe.' Dahlia sounded.Zoe didn't respond so, Dahlia resumed, 'The longer you avoid it, the harder it will hit you when it comes crashing down eventually.'Zoe felt an ache bubble inside her, making it hard to breat

    > Tired and frustrated, Zoe returned home after a few hours. She had lost her shoes while running and trying to shift for hours. She was relieved that no one went this way and the house was one of the last ones on the territory edge. She stood at the front door and hesitated to knock. She could hear something boiling on the old stove. But Aunt Julie and Xavier were silent. He couldn't have gone since their broken car was still there. She took a deep breath, she didn't want to keep standing on the doorstep with the Sun on top of her. The aroma of whatever was being cooked wafted from an open window and made her realize that she hadn't eaten in a while now. The last meal she had was a quick salad lunch with her colleagues at work the day before yesterday. Aunt Julie opened the door, the moment her knuckles hit the wood. She didn't smother her or ask any questions, but Zoe noticed that she had cried and was looking at Zoe the same way when her Dad had been arre

    >It took an hour and a lot of emotional blackmail on behalf of Aunt Julie to convince Zoe to let Xavier go with her to Kansas City. And that too only on the condition that nothing would be expected of her and it was only a test for Xavier to see if he can keep to his word. After a lot of persuasion and tales of mates, second chances, belief in the Moon Goddess, and the fact that technically Xavier was the only one left in the world who was hers and on her side for good, Aunt Julie smiled and patted Zoe's back, "I'll go up and tell him that you need to talk. Be nice, okay?"Zoe didn't dare roll her eyes at Aunt Julie, she respected her way too much for that. But she did shake her head slightly knowing how Aunt Julie managed to convince her but she let her do it. If anyone had any right to Zoe, it was Aunt Julie after everything she had done for the Simmons family and how she had been so much more than just a distinct cousin of her Dad and their housekeeper. But, Zoe already had so much on her plate, that she didn't need to be pulled into everything Claire was a part of. Xavier felt like it was pointless to make his worries hers when she hadn't even forgiven him yet.The more important thing was staying by her side. Which meant, he had to persuade her to let him come with her. The world was a much darker place than she knew and he wanted to protect her from it even though physically she didn't need protecting.Plus, he had no idea how idea what awaited them at those coordinates. She wanted the apology. She had spent nights dreaming of the moment Xavier realized what a huge mistake he had made to let her go. But, that was not the moment for it. She was already an emotional mess."Let me, please. You need to hear this and I need to say this." He cautiously stepped closer and held her arms gently to ensure she didn't leave without hearing but could if she wanted to."Why? You didn't care about saying or being heard a few months ago." >"What are you so happy about?" I asked Aunt Julie whose excitement was confusing me.Instead of answering me straight away she sat me down on a couch with a nostalgic look and held my hands motherly before finally speaking."Did your Dad ever tell you that you have your mother's eyes?" She asked with a soft sad smile. She didn't wait for me to answer, probably because she knew the answer to her question. She resumed, "Of course not. He did his best to remove any mention of her from his life. That was his way of dealing with his grief."What about my grief? I wanted to ask but I chose to listen. She was right, no one was allowed to talk about Mom in our house. I was never allowed to ask any questions. Aunt Julie tried her best to fill that hole in my life but for a ten-year-old girl, no one could replace her mother. I barely had any memories of her either. The psychiatrist had told Dad that it was a form of PTSD. I don't remember what the trauma exactly was, but apparentl

Xavier commented."It better. The coordinates are a two-day drive away." Zoe replied without looking at him. Then, she suddenly turned to him, "Key?" She brought her hand forward expectantly."Zoe," He started but she was getting impatient, "Key, now."He sighed, fetched the key from his pants pocket, and placed it on her open palm. She grabbed it and turned without a thank you. Aunt Julie tried to protest, "You can't let her go alone,""I'm not. Don't worry, " he said and waited for Zoe to try starting the car. He crossed his arms and waited as she turned the key in the ignition, but the car didn't start. Zoe stubbornly tried to keep trying instead of admitting that he was right. T

She didn't know why he suddenly cared but a small part of her was relieved that he hadn't mentioned his chosen mate yet or gone back to her. By the looks of it, he was only worried about Zoe. She didn't want to let him in her heart and get it broken again but she wasn't sure if he had left entirely the first time either."Looks like coordinates." He thought out loud."I knew it." She stared at the pictures. This time with more attention to detail than she had earlier in the day. She read the notes behind each.
