Rider

I stayed in my office for most of the day. I figured if I avoided Sophia, maybe this stupid fascination I seemed to have developed for her would go away. I had just gotten off the phone with one of the neighboring alphas when there was a knock at the door.

“Come in,” I announced before the door opened.

I let out a relieved sigh when I realized it was just my soon-to-be gamma, Matty. He must have just gotten back from The Dark Shadow Pack. I sent him there yesterday to get more details about the attack on their territory.

“What’s up with you?” He asked curiously as he took a seat across from my desk. He was always good at reading my mood.

“Nothing, just on edge because of these attacks,” I replied, but I knew he could read right through my lie. After all, He was my best friend and could always tell when something was bothering me.

“Hmmm... OK. Now that we have that lie out of the way, why so tense? I mean, you’re always tense, but today you seem extra edgy.” He asked tilting his head to the side as he watched me carefully. I let out a frustrated sigh; there was no point in hiding it from him since he would find out on his own soon enough.

“Sophia and her warriors arrived earlier today,” I blurted out.

“No way! Where are they? I can’t wait to see…” Matty started to reply, but trailed off when he noticed my irritated expression.

“I meant to say, that bitch! She had better stay out of our way.” He shook his fist sarcastically and had a slight smirk on his face.

Matty was well aware that Sophia and I didn’t get along, but he had always liked her. I knew he was loyal to me, but it pissed me off how he thought she was so awesome. Why didn’t anyone else see how annoying she was like I do?

“Shut up. I know you’re dying to see her,” I said, and he let out a chuckle.

“Dude, I still don’t understand how you dislike her so much. She’s funny, cute, strong, and a ball of energy. I would kill for a mate like her.” I couldn’t stop the growl that left my chest following his admission. What the hell was that?

“Jeez... What’s your problem? I know you don’t like her, but I’m just speaking the truth. You know my allegiance will always be to you.” He had his hands up in mock surrender.

“Sorry, she got me all worked up already. I don’t care if you like her; just remember she’s here for work, not pleasure.” I felt the need to add the last part because I knew my gamma all too well; he’d likely try to get in her pants, and, for some reason, the thought angered me.

“Come on, you can’t expect her to work the entire time she’s here,” he said with a frown.

“Why not? I work all the time,” I countered.

“Yeah, but you’re a robot. A normal person needs a balance between work and play.” His words irritated me. He would never understand the responsibilities that came with being alpha. There was no downtime for me, even if I wanted some.

“What did you find out at The Dark Shadow Pack?” I decided it was time to change the subject before I snapped.

“Well, a dozen rogues attacked them. They lost five warriors but killed eight of the rogues. Three got away, and they captured one,” he started explaining, and I simply nodded for him to continue.

“The rogues were both male and female and ranged in age. Some were only teenagers.” His concerned frown deepened with each word.

“Did the one they capture say anything?” I asked curiously.

“He was the oldest of the rogues and seemed to be the one calling the shots. They tortured him but he didn’t give up much. He did slip at one point and said that his alpha has powerful allies and that we don’t stand a chance against the bloodsuckers. His dying words were that a war was coming,” he replied, and I immediately frowned. Are the rogues working with vampires now? What would the vampires gain by working with rogues?

Werewolves and vampires were at war centuries ago. This was before the royal werewolf kingdom was decimated. At the time, the alpha king and the vampire king came to an agreement, and they signed a peace treaty between the two species. Since then, we haven’t had any problems with vampires. They didn’t bother us, and we didn’t bother them. What could have possibly changed? Maybe they thought they could take over both species now that we didn’t have an alpha king? This was not good.

My parents had told me the story about Sophia’s grandmother. She was the royal princess and escaped the massacre. No one knew she had survived until after Sophia’s mother, Isabella, and her uncle, Declan, were born. After Sophia’s grandmother passed away, her mother and uncle were the only ones left of the royal bloodline. The elders tried to rebuild the kingdom when they discovered Isabella and Declan’s existence, but the other alphas voted against it. They didn’t want a supreme alpha to rule over everyone. I was starting to wonder if this was the right decision. These recent attacks have shown how each pack was working alone instead of everyone working together as a whole to protect our kind. There were too many leaders trying to call the shots.

“That’s not all,” Matty said, drawing me from my thoughts.

“There’s evidence that witches are working with them too,” he added. This is worse than I thought. What could they possibly be planning?

“Shit. This is not good. Was there anything else?” I asked.

“No, but Alpha Samuel was practically pleading for some help to protect his border and pack,” Matty stated.

“I’m going to set up an alpha meeting. We can get some of the bigger packs to help the smaller ones.” I replied, and he nodded.

“Do you need me to do anything for you?” Matty asked.

“Nah, you just got back. Go unpack and rest up. We have a busy day ahead of us tomorrow.”

“Sweet. So... do you happen to know where Sophia is so I can avoid her?” he asked with a cheeky grin, and I glared at him. I really disliked the guy sometimes, and I knew he was intentionally pushing my buttons.

“Never mind, if I see her, I’ll run away screaming, stranger danger.” He chuckled as he stood from his chair and headed for the door.

“Remember, she’s here for work, not pleasure,” I said sternly before he left the room.

“Yes, Sir!” He offered a fake salute before leaving my office. I was really starting to second-guess my choices for beta and gamma. They were both traitors when it came to the she-devil.

Sophia

Since Rider so graciously allowed my men and me to take the day off to settle in, I spent the afternoon with Emma, Conrad, and Rory. We had dinner with Trish and Erik, and to my pleasant surprise, Rider never showed up.

After dinner, we hit up the games room and played a couple of rounds of pool to unwind before the madness started tomorrow. “Seven a.m. sharp.” As Rider so kindly reminded me in his office. Goddess, his domineering ways were so irritating.

“It’s your turn,” Rory stated, drawing me out of my thoughts.

I was about to take a shot when the door to the game room opened.

“There she is.” I heard Matty’s cheerful voice exclaim.

I looked over to see him walking toward us with a big smile on his face.

“Oh, my Goddess, Matty!” In my excitement, I dropped my pool cue and ran over to meet him halfway.

“I missed you, firecracker.” He chuckled as I launched myself into his arms and wrapped my legs around his waist.

Matty and I always got along growing up, even though he was Rider’s best friend. He was a lot like Rory, easy-going and fun. Two traits that were foreign to Rider.

Matty was six-foot-two with a muscular build. He had shaggy black hair and dimples on his cheeks. He was handsome, but unlike Conrad, he knew it. Matty was a bit of a playboy, but I didn’t mind. He was a big boy and was allowed to sleep with whomever he wanted. Our relationship was strictly in the friend zone.

“Where have you been? We got here hours ago,” I asked as I finally climbed down from him.

“Rider sent me on a mission. I just got back,” he replied as he gave Emma a hug and shook Conrad’s hand.

“What kind of mission?” I asked curiously.

Matty told us everything he learned from The Dark Shadow pack. What he said was extremely worrisome. Vampires and witches? What would they have to gain from all this? I noticed that Emma, Conrad, and Rory were also quiet after hearing what Matty had said.

“Come on, guys, let’s not stress about it too much today. Enjoy the little bit of freedom we have left before the ballbuster puts us all to work tomorrow,” Matty joked, and I knew right away he was referring to Rider. Everyone burst out laughing at his words.

“Where is he anyway? He didn’t make it to dinner,” Rory asked curiously.

“I think he’s hiding from a certain blonde-haired, blue-eyed babe,” Matty said, giving me a playful wink. I responded with a chuckle and a light punch to his shoulder. He was always such a flirt.

“Well, they’ve beaten their record so far,” Rory stated.

“Oh yeah? Which one?” Matty asked, curiously.

“No blood has been shed, and they’ve been under the same roof for half a day,” Rory replied, causing Matty to chuckle.

“Stop talking about me like I’m not even here and focus on the game so I can kick your ass,” I said to Rory, as I smacked him on the back of his head.

“Ow... so violent,” he stated as he rubbed the sore spot.

We played pool for a few hours, and catching up with old friends was really nice, but what Matty told us was weighing heavy on my mind. I was anxious for tomorrow so we could get working and hopefully end the rogues once and for all.

I was about to call it a night when the games room door opened. I looked over to see Rider standing in the door frame with his arms crossed over his chest and a scowl on his face.

“Hey brother, you wanna join us for a round?” Rory asked casually while motioning to the pool table.

“Some of us don’t have time for games. I expect all of you in my office by seven a.m. sharp, not a minute later.” Rider stared us all down.

“Goddess, can someone please fix the broken record? I’ve heard that same line at least three times today,” I replied with an eye roll. Everyone except for Rider looked at me with wide eyes. Rider, on the other hand, looked like he was ready to combust. A large vein in his neck was pulsing, and his face turned bright red.

“Seven a.m.,” Rider growled, before turning around to leave.

“Shit. What time did he say to be in his office tomorrow morning?” I asked sarcastically, knowing he could hear me. He paused in the doorway with his back to us, but instead of replying to my sarcasm, I watched him shake his head in disapproval before storming out of the room and slamming the door behind him.

“Why Sophia, why?” Rory chuckled, and I shrugged my shoulders.

“You realize we have to deal with the bad mood you put him in, right?” Matty added with a chuckle while motioning to Rory and himself.

“I seriously don’t know how you guys put up with him. He’s such a grump.” I huffed.

“He’s not that bad, Sophia. You really should cut him some slack. He has a lot on his plate, and he doesn’t want to disappoint the pack. His heart’s in the right place; he just takes himself too seriously sometimes,” Rory replied in a more serious tone.

“It’s true. The guy never stops working. Sometimes I wish he would take a night off and act like a normal nineteen-year-old,” Matty added with a sigh.

“I’ll give him some slack, but if he pulls his usual bullshit, I’m not going to let him walk all over me,” I replied.

“That’s all that we ask,” Rory said.

We played one more round of pool before I decided to call it a night. I was tired, but more importantly, there was a lot on my mind that I needed time to process.

I left the games room and headed upstairs to my bedroom. Once inside, I stripped out of my clothes and threw on an oversized T-shirt. After washing my face and brushing my teeth, I climbed into bed.

I spent a good hour pondering the day’s events. Between my odd attraction to Rider and the possibility that vampires and witches were helping the rogues, I had a lot to think about. Sleep didn’t come easily, but I eventually dozed off.

I left my room and made my way out of the packhouse. It’s pretty quiet at this time of the morning. Warrior training didn’t start till six, so the only people out and about were the warriors on night patrol and the omegas working in the kitchen. The rest of the pack members were all still asleep. I was jogging through the forest when I heard laughing coming from the training grounds. My eyebrows furrowed together as I wondered who else was up this early. Sophia At first, I was frustrated when I started sparring with Rider. He was so cocky and arrogant; I knew he intentionally tried to push my buttons. He kept demanding I surrender, but that would never happen. It surprised me how strong he’d become since the last time I fought him and he was definitely giving me a run for my money. Given my royal bloodline, few people could beat me, but a couple of times throughout our fight, I thought he might. After a while of us sparring and going back and forth with who had the upper hand, I found myself enjoying the challenge. My frustration faded and was replaced with excitement. I always loved a good fight. From the look on Rider’s face, he also seemed to enjoy himself. At one point, he was lying on top of me, trying to pin me to the ground. I had my legs wrapped around his waist and my arms locked around his neck, holding him tightly against my body. I felt something hard poke at my core and quickly realized he was turned on. His

Sophia I kept running, following the smell of blood that was getting stronger and stronger the closer I got. I hadn’t heard any more screaming, which was alarming. Was I too late? Conrad tried mind-linking me again, but I ignored him. He told me that Rider had ordered me to wait for backup, but there was no time. Someone needed help. I could feel it in my gut. Plus, that asshole isn’t my alpha. I don’t follow his orders. I had been running for fifteen minutes when, suddenly; I heard snarling, followed by a faint whimper. That sound made my paws move faster. I knew someone was in trouble. As I got closer, several scents assaulted my nose: blood, rogues, and was that the aroma of vampires? I started second-guessing myself. Was this a trap? Maybe I should have waited for backup. It was too late to turn back now. I reached a small clearing, and that was when I spotted him, a large gray wolf with matted fur coated in blood, towering over something on the ground. I knew immedi

Sophia My mouth opened and closed several times as I tried to formulate a reply. What was wrong with me? I was never lost for words, so why was I struggling to speak? Was it perhaps because Rider stood only a few feet away from me, completely naked and furious? I knew it wasn’t the best time to ogle him, but I was struggling to keep my eyes above his waist. I noticed his eyes trailing down my body as he took in my disheveled state. He paused for a few minutes on my leg, the one the feral wolf had bitten. The wound had healed, but there was still a lot of dried blood on my skin. Rider’s eyes softened slightly, and there was concern swirling inside his dark orbs. “What happened, Sophia?” he gritted out as he took slow predatorial steps toward me. “I just came across a feral wolf, no big deal. I took care of him.” I tried to sound calm when I was anything but. The closer he got, the faster my heart was beating in my chest. “Why didn’t you wait for backup, Sophia?” He

Rider I spent hours in my office after everyone left. My wolf and I had been on edge ever since hearing Sophia’s report. What did the rogues want with her? Was she their primary target, or were they after more? The thought of anyone taking or hurting her wasn’t sitting well with me. My protective instincts were kicking in, and once again, I found myself wondering why? Why did I care so much about Sophia? I was also confused by my sudden attraction to her. My wolf had been in control when I stumbled upon her in the forest, but even when I took back control, I still couldn’t stop myself from touching her. If the others hadn’t arrived when they did, goddess knows what would have happened between Sophia and me. The worst part, I felt disappointed that we were interrupted. I wanted to keep touching her, to feel her come undone at my hands, hear her scream my name, and beg me for more. Rider Everyone arrived at my office at eight in the morning, including the warriors joining our search. Now that I knew the rogue camp was nearby, I didn’t want to take any chances by not bringing enough manpower with us. I also still needed to break the news to Sophia that she would be staying behind. “So, what’s the plan, Rider?” Rory asked curiously, taking me out of my thoughts. Before replying to the group, I opened the map on my desk for everyone to see. “We’re going to split up into two groups so we can cover more territory. We’ll start in this general area. That’s where Sophia encountered the rogues last night. The kid told her the camp wasn’t far from there, so I think that’s our best bet. He also said the camp is well hidden, so rule out any caves or underground camps you come across,” I announced and motioned to the area on the map that Sophia had pointed out earlier. “Each group will have members from both packs so that we can communicate through mind-lin

Sophia Fifteen Years Later The first five years as king and queen were challenging. Rider and I spent most of that time figuring out our new roles while everyone else adjusted to our leadership. No one outright challenged us, but we were forced to use our aura to bring people to their knees occasionally. I didn’t like doing it, but it was a necessary display of dominance to gain full compliance, and it worked. Since then, things have been much more manageable. We’ve earned respect and loyalty from our people by keeping the peace in our kingdom and bringing the packs closer together. We’ve even formed a close alliance with the vampires thanks to my cousin Jonah and his queen, Dawn. Now, if ever there was a threat against our kingdom, we had all the support we would need. Rider and I still had our battles, but they were fewer and farther between since we’d learned to communicate better. The Moon Goddess was right. I would have never succeeded in this role if it were

  • Alpha VS Alpha   Crowning Ceremony

Sophia The week flew by in a flash. It felt like just yesterday when Rider and I marked each other, and here we were, getting ready for our crowning ceremony. We traveled to the royal palace for the first time since discovering that it would be our new home. The council had been busy renovating it over the past week in preparation for our arrival. They said it wouldn’t be completely ready yet, but it would be livable while they finished the last few details. The palace was jaw-droppingly beautiful, straight out of a fairytale. The building was at least triple the size of my old packhouse, and you could tell money was not an issue when it was built. Everything looked expensive and hand-crafted. The building had a Venetian feel, with rounded stone window frames and entryways. The floors were expensive marble, and the ceiling had intricate carvings in the stone. The entire place looked like a work of art. When I first stepped foot inside, I felt like an imposter that didn’t belong

  • Alpha VS Alpha   A little teasing never hurt

Sophia I should have gone straight to find Rider after I left my parents, and that was where I was heading until I remembered our earlier conversation. Rider had said, “If you’re not back in here within the hour, I’m hunting you down.” A mischievous smile tugged at my lips. When did I ever listen to commands? OK, maybe when he brought me to the edge of an intense orgasm, I might be a little more compliant, but right now, I wanted to make him work for it a little. So instead of heading for our room, I headed to Emma’s. I hadn’t had a chance to hang out with her much since Rider arrived, so I was actually looking forward to catching up with her while Rider lost his marbles searching for me. Hell, we went seven months without sex. What would a few hours hurt? When I reached Emma’s door, I knocked. I heard a bunch of commotion inside the room before the door finally opened a crack, and Emma stuck her head out. My eyebrows shot up when I took in her disheveled state. Her hai

Sophia Dream I was sitting at the edge of the dock with my feet dangling in the water, wearing my sleeping shorts and white tank top. How did I get here? The water was cold, but there was a warm breeze, and the sun shone above me. This was the same lake Rider and I camped at, but I was alone. I was drawn from my thoughts when a presence behind me caused the hairs at the back of my neck to stand up. I glanced over my shoulder only to be blinded by a bright light. My hands lifted, shielding my eyes while they adjusted to the brightness. The light faded, and I gasped in surprise at the woman who appeared and started walking toward me. She was breathtaking, with long silver hair, bright blue eyes, and the smoothest skin I had ever seen. She looked no older than thirty and wore a long, silky white dress. The woman smiled at me, stepping onto the dock. “May I sit with you, Sophia?” she asked, her voice serene. How did she know my name? A glowing light surrounded her, b

The guy was an insatiable beast, and I loved every minute of it. He was currently fast asleep next to me while I lay wide awake. My mind was a jumbled mess, thinking about the mark on my neck and what that meant. I remembered my conversations with Darius and Dawn, but at the time, I thought they were nuts when they claimed I was a true queen. I needed to speak with my parents and see if they could shed some light on everything. I gently lifted Rider’s arm around my waist before wiggling out from his grasp and climbing out of bed. It was six-thirty a.m. on Saturday, so there was no warrior training today, but I knew my parents would be up anyway. They liked getting up before the pack and having a quiet breakfast together. Sophia When the kitchen staff brought out our dinner, I nearly died laughing. The chef had made Al pastor pork tacos for me with fresh pineapple salsa and a drizzle of chipotle crema. And for Rider, he made chicken Alfredo. When I looked at Rider with a brow raised and an amused smile on my face, he simply shrugged like it was all just a fluke. The kitchen staff also brought out a bottle of prosecco and two flutes before leaving us alone in the small dining room. The room was usually only used when we had important visitors and wanted a quiet, more intimate evening. It was small, with a ten-person rectangular wooden table in the middle surrounded by dark grey upholstered chairs. Rider was sitting on the end of the table with me by his side. “Mmmm… these are so good,” I moaned, taking a bite from one of my tacos. “Not as good as this creamy, garlicky goodness,” he argued, spinning a decent amount of the fettuccini onto his fork before shoving it into his mouth.

Sophia What a week. It all started with our camping trip, but it only got better from there. Rider and I have spent almost every minute together. My father wasn’t lying when he said he cleared my schedule. Whenever I tried to get a little work done, I was scolded and sent on my way. I couldn’t be mad, though, because I had the best time of my life. I didn’t even recognize Rider anymore. Instead of the uptight, domineering man I grew up knowing, he seemed stress-free and even playful. His need for control was still present, but I didn’t mind that. I even enjoyed it at times. He’d slept in my bed every night, but as he promised on our camping trip, other than a few passionate kisses, he hadn’t gone further. We just cuddled and tortured ourselves with the sexual tension building between us. Rider hadn’t pressured me at all about us, and I was appreciative of that. Rider got to work on setting up the tent while I got the rest of our camp set up. There wasn’t much to do, but I cleared an area for a campfire and unloaded our backpacks. Once done, I glanced at Rider, who was cursing like a trucker, struggling with the tent. “Hey, you need some help?” I offered. “Nah, I think I got it now. Why don’t you hop in the lake, and I’ll join you in a few minutes,” Rider replied with a smile, but I could see right through it. The minute Sophia had left me on the field, I practically ran back to the packhouse, searching for Maribel.
