Phoenix’ POV

So, that happened.

It came spilling out and I couldn’t stop it. I didn’t tell her everything. Actually I told her pretty much nothing, apart from why I left her. I’m not ready for the wolf talk just yet. Perhaps if I was a run of the mill, garden variety werewolf, the conversation would be easier.

I’m not in the right place, mentally, where I can talk about the facility. Even my brothers and I let that shit stay buried. How would I even begin explaining it to her? I need answers, sooner rather than later. I need to know what they did to me and my wolf, if it’s even safe for me to have Rose.

‘She is ours.’ My wolf warns. ‘I won’t hurt our little flower. I need her just as much as you, more maybe.’ For the first time ever, I sense a softness in him.

Rose has cried herself to sleep on my lap and I’m so relieved the crying has stopped I daren’t move and risk waking her.

‘How can I trust you with her after what you did?’ I told myself I wasn’t going to bring it up, but I can’

Rose’s POV Opening my eyes, they feel scratchy from crying, but I feel so much better after letting out those emotions I’d been bottling up all week.“Hi, beautiful. Good nap?” Phoenix smiles down at me, giving me a gentle squeeze and a soft kiss on the corner of my mouth. I always knew he was softer than he looked, especially with me, but I never imagined he would be so tender. “I’m feeling much better. I think everything just came bubbling up and spilled over. Sorry I’m such a mess.” I whisper. “Now you listen to me.” He takes hold of my chin and turns my head so I’m looking right up at him. Something inside me flutters to life as his eyes burn right into me.“You are not a mess. You have been to hell and back this week, and I’m proud of you for coming out the other side. You are mine Rose. Always have been, always will be. Now that you have allowed me to have a little piece of you, I will not let you go. You consume me, Rose. Thoughts of you keep me up at night, watching over yo

Phoenix’ POV The look on her face is beyond priceless.“All of you. How the fuck did that happen? Am I in some kind of twilight zone?” she doesn’t even try to hide her shock but does slap her hand over her mouth, probably because Gwynn was very strict about the kind of language young ladies should and should not use. “Mind your language, Rose. You are far too beautiful for such vulgar language to be coming out of your mouth.” I scold her, meaning every word but delivering it as a compliment. I’m not about to make her feel like shit in front of my brothers.“Sorry. I’m just, surprised. How ...” she stalls. I never thought this conversation would happen, so I get why she is lost for words. “We just never found the kind of woman who could handle us.” Ryder smirks, but deep down we all have the same reason. The same loneliness. We all feel it but we don’t often talk about it. What’s the point?“We travelled too much until recently.” Jackson offers up another of the bullshit excuses we

Rose’s POV Thirty minutes ago I was naked in his arms, sleeping like a baby, feeling safe and happy and like all of my dreams had come true. Now it’s like the world has been flipped upside down and a dream has become a waking nightmare. I can feel the tension rolling off him in thick, heavy waves and he is holding me so tight I think I’m going to have ten little bruises from his fingers. The sombre expressions on his brothers faces only makes my stomach drop further and why can’t I stop shaking? Whatever they have to say can’t be good.“From yourself?” Why would I need to be protected from him? Phoenix would never hurt me. He would chew off his own arm before hurting me. That’s about the only thing I’m certain of right now.“When we were little, before we were even a year old, Jackson, Ranger, Ryder and I were taken from our parents.” “Stolen.” Jackson interjects. Phoenix nods, sighs, then takes a deep breath before continuing.“We were raised by a secret government agency in a com

Phoenix’ POVShe goes limp in my arms before Jackson even pulls the needle from her perfect, smooth skin. “That could have gone worse.” Ryder opens his book, flings his legs over the arm of his soft leather recliner and continues reading, as if sedating my woman is all in a day’s work. Then again I suppose they are all used to pouncing on me and knocking me the fuck out.“Could have gone better too.” Ranger stands and walks over to the bar on the back wall. He doesn’t ask who wants a drink, just pours five large whiskeys and hands them around silently. The room is heavy with tension. We knew that one day she might find out about us, but it never felt like that day would actually come.None of my brothers look directly at Rose as she lay limply on my lap. Her head rests peacefully on my chest, her legs are tucked up under the blanket, and the only thing keeping me where I am is pure desperation. I need answers.“Did you find anything that could be useful?” I can’t believe I’m even ask

Phoenix’ POV ‘For future reference, anything pertaining to Rose is both of our business. When she gets used to the idea of what we are, I’ll make sure you have more opportunity to bond with her. But I want to know everything I need to know about the mate bond, marking, knotting, everything.’ Bargaining isn’t something I’ve tried with him before. I’ve never really had a reason to. He is just as stubborn as I am, so I don’t doubt it would have been fruitless anyway. Now though, we have something to unite for. He huffs. Not telling me so with words but I feel his reluctant agreement.“My wolf is going to tell me what I need to know. He isn’t happy about it, but we both only have Roses interest at heart.” I stroke my hand over her hair, letting the soft strands weave between my fingers. “And you will tell us, right?” Ranger asks with a bit of uncertainty. Like he wants to know anything he can, we all do, but also cringing at the subject matter.‘Werewolf sex Ed 101.’ My wolf, who has b

Rose’s POV My head is pounding, my throat dry and my arms so heavy I can't move the properly. Slowly I open my eyes, blinking against the harsh light. Where am I? The familiar scent of Phoenix makes my head swim. Flashes of gold speckled eyes fill my mind. The memory of feeling sheer terror engulfs me.Phoenix is a werewolf. All five of them are. That's what they were trying to tell me. “Don’t try moving baby girl, some of the sedative is still in your system so you might feel a bit foggy and weak for a few hours. Here have a few sips of this.” Phoenix’ smooth voice calms me a little and he wraps an arm behind my shoulders, lifting me as a cold metal straw brushes my bottom lip. My whole body trembles. The comfort of his touch wars with the insane revelations of what he is. I thought it was a joke at first. Them taking the piss because of my books. Phoenix’ POV If she doesn’t stop riding my ridge like this, I’m going to bust all over myself like a damn teenager.Does she still not understand how badly I want her? To feel her tight heat wrapped around me?With everything I’ve learned today, I know now that I need to take my time with her even more than I already intended to. She doesn’t know what she is asking for.‘Or does she. She seems to have found our marking spot well enough.’ My wolf actually chuckles. A shiver runs down my spine as she licks over it again and my cock swells with carnal need. “What did you mean about what your granny told you?” I had meant to ask when she mentioned it, before she distracted me.“She told me stories about werewolves and witches and magic. I thought she made it all up. Then she gave me those books and I thought she got some of her stories from them, like inspiration. But her stories were better, more real, if that makes sense.” She stops nipping at my neck and drops a bombshell.“More real

Rose’s POV What do I remember? Everything. The chapters where Alpha Reid claimed Luna Lillie are the hottest, most explicit words I’ve ever read. The thought of Phoenix claiming me like that are what helped me discover my own sexual urges. I have touched myself to that thought more often than I’ve had hot dinners.“I know those five chapters word for word. I have reread them so often thinking of...” I stop, not wanting to sound like an obsessed crazy person. I need to know you understand, and tell me what you want.” His gravelly voice strains as he whispers in my ear. This side of him is so much more than my imagination could conjure. More of my juices flow out of me and on to him. The damp patch has spread so far I can feel it warming my behind and spreading beyond where my butt is sitting on his thick thighs.“I want you to claim me. To feel your...” I swallow, re

Rose’s POV “I think we can all agree that it doesn’t really matter what other people think the poem, or prophecy, whatever it is, means. What is important is that I do what I can to help. If Amarragh chooses to do what he can to deal with Antonellia, we will still have to face the Agency at some point. From what I have seen for myself and what you have all said, they aren’t going to stand quietly by and ignore our existence. I know that when they find out about me, they will come for me, and I can not sit and wait. I need to be able to fight for myself, to protect myself.” I know it’s hard for Phoenix to hear that I won’t rely on him to protect me. It is his and Augustus’ nature to want to put themselves between me and danger, and the rest of the guys would stand shoulder with him in a heartbeat, even if I wasn’t involved. “I don’t like it, petal. You don’t understand what the Agency is like. They operate within their own rules and regulations and do not answer to human law. The Hum

Phoenix’ POV I’m itching to let Augustus loose to hunt Antonellia so my beast can sink his teeth into his dirty, rotten flesh and skin him alive. Knowing one of his minions draws breath on our island, within spitting distance of Rose, it makes my body pulse with rage. I hold in my instinctual urges. My attention needs to be with Rose and on everything Amarragh told us last night. Jackson is more than capable of making the piece of shit in the genny shed regret every beat of his heart.“Amarragh, can I ask you something?” Rose swallows another mouthful of the pancakes I’ve been absentmindedly feeding her whilst thinking about our next steps.“Anything, little witch.” He smiles over his giant mug of thick, tar coloured coffee. He takes his java so strong you could stand a spoon up in it. “How do I claim my gifts? You said I need to harness my powers, and I have no idea how to do that. Over the last couple of days, things have felt... different. Like there is something growing inside m

Rose’s POVMorning came quickly, and after Phoenix delivered on his promise, he barely got a few hours of sleep, and I lay awake watching the sky grow lighter. I lived most of my life at the edge of the ocean, and the sound of the waves rolling in is like a comfort blanket for me.The storm last night was exactly what I needed to feel recharged and ready to face what I have accepted to be my life now. My man, my mate, worships me with his words, body, and mind, but there is a threat out there that wants to take him from me. I refuse to lose anyone else.Amarragh sure had a lot to say about everything. His words about owning my gifts stuck with me. I’ve had all night to think about it, and I think he was being literal. I need to know how. How do I claim my gifts? What will they be? He seemed to think I have more than one, which I gather is unusual. I just hope whatever magic I have is useful for all of us.As I carefully lift Phoenix’ arm, which has me pinned to the mattress, he stirs

Phoenix’ POV“It’s been a long night, and this storm doesn’t look like it’s going to let up any. Let’s baton down the hatches and get some sleep. I think we all have a lot to process.” I‘m done with this for now, I can’t take any more in. I move my hand a little higher on Rose’s thigh, letting her know exactly what is on my mind right now. With all that’s going on, I just want to lose myself in her for a bit and put tonight to the back of my mind.Ranger, Ryder and Braydon all seem to agree and push their chairs back as they stand from the table.“I’ll join you shortly. I need to have a word with Amarragh.” Jackson still looks like his whole world has come crumbling down around his ears as he gives Amarragh a sideways look that asks him not to leave yet.I can’t even begin to imagine what is going through his head right now. The two of them have always been the closest and I imagine he is wondering if it was all real or just the bond that we now know is more than what we thought.“Com

Rose’s POVAgain, Amarragh has taken a side track in his explanation. This is all far more complicated and deeper than I had ever expected. Hearing one of the most hated names in history only makes me realise how messed up this is. The second world war was almost ninety years ago and still that name is renowned as pure evil.“What did he hold over you Amarragh? And what does that have to do with your bond to the guys?” I know this has got to be leading somewhere but I am anxious to get answers. Phoenix feels numb with shock, and I can’t say that is making me feel at ease. Shock isn’t in his nature, or his beast’s.“My blood was one of the main components of the gene therapies they engineered. Their knowledge of its regenerative effects and the control it would give them of their creations, was my undoing. If I had not stayed to maintain some control, the fallout would have been catastrophic. Mengele would give himself infusions of my blood, making himself almost immortal as far as he

Phoenix’ POVRose’s words echo in my head and Amarragh’s face pales. Our bond? Amarragh is like the unruly step brother of our group, but I always assumed that was because of the shit we constantly got into and out of together. Apparently that it not the case.“My bond with Alpha Team was forged in fire and blood. It isn’t what anyone could call a traditional or natural bond, but it is strong none the less. You are right Rose, and I had hoped to never have to speak about this for fear of gross misunderstanding, especially given what everyone here has just learned about my father and grandfather, but alas, secrets will out.” Amarragh confirms Rose’s accusation that there is more to it.“What do you mean old friend?” Jackson’s voice breaks as he looks at the vampire. The two of them have the closest relationship out of everyone at this table, and if we have been betrayed, he will feel it the worst.“I mean, the fires of war and all that we have survived together strengthened a bond that

Rose’s POV I’m right. I can tell by the look of shock on his face. I still think there is something else, something more that he doesn’t want to share yet. I can feel it in the marrow of my bones. There is something much, much deeper than shared trauma and war stories that ties him to the guys. “You have your mother’s intuition you know, and Gwynn’s fire. It looks like you have Sage’s foresight too.” Amarragh runs his tongue over his teeth, stopping at his sharp canine and pressing the soft flesh against it. A single drop of blood drips onto his lip, and the small puncture heals instantly.‘Do wolves heal like that?’ I ask over the link.‘Not that quickly.’ Braydon answers, taking a sip of his drink. All the guys have sat in stunned silence as Amarragh tells us about his family, and apparently mine too.“Who is Sage?” I’ve never heard that name before, but the way he says it makes a warm sensation trickle down my spine.Amarragh reaches across the table to the open book and points t

Phoenix’ POV “What did they want?” I ask as I lower my head and take a deep, calming breath of Rose’s sweet scent. She has such a calming effect on me, and my addiction to her grows more and more with every passing day. Sometimes, I wonder if I should be worried. I love her so completely, I would raze the earth to the ground for her. Of course, she would never ask such a thing, and that only makes me adore her even more. Augustus rumbles in appreciation. His head is still firmly back in bed now that he trusts Amarragh and his promise that he is no threat to our mate. My old friend only seems curious and perhaps impressed by her lineage, but that doesn’t do much to put my possessive nature at ease. In fact, Augustus doesn’t seem surprised in the slightest by Amarragh’s secret. All I felt from his little outburst was that he didn’t care for the vampire’s wandering eyes. It wouldn't surprise me to discover that my beast already knew Amarragh’s secret, or at least suspected what he w

Rose’s POV Phoenix leaves the link between him, the guys and myself open whilst Amarragh sits opposite Phoenix and I waiting to see if the men he has known, and lied to, for almost their whole live, are going to give him the chance to tell his story.‘There is something about him that I can’t put my finger on.’ I tell Phoenix, but everyone looks at me, and Jackson nods discreetly. He is Amarragh’s biggest fan from what I can gather, and this is likely to hit him the hardest.‘We have never been able to really figure him out. He is the best at what he does, that’s why he’s here, and I have learned a lot from him over the years... but... this. How could we have been so blind? I always thought perhaps he was some kind of wolf. There is a bond between us, so that is what made sense. I suppose now it makes sense why he never shifted.’ Jackson is struggling with this revelation as much as Phoenix but for different reasons entirely.“When I was born, the world was different.
